There's a chart posted around here pretty often. Basically there's an invisible MMR system and you get or lose points for winning or losing and once you reach a certain threshold you get a chance at promotion or demotion. The closer to your rank they are, the more points you lose or get. So 10 wins could get you almost no points if you're 3 ranks away from them.

Plus I've started getting wins by punishing lows and frame trapping, not just Deathfist/Demoman mixups. I'm happy with that for now, happier than I was getting 15 match win streaks in Injustice 2
