Newfag poorfag here, I stumbled upon the concept of grand strategy games recently and got EU3:DW since it was the best combination of easy to find and download, relatively low learning curve (according to a 5 minute google search), and most importantly that I could actually run on my toaster of a laptop since I apparently can't run any incarnation of EU4. Since I've picked it up, I've played a few saves as the teutonic order, minamoto, the aztecs, brandenburg, and sweden, each lasting for around 100 years give or take. Currently on frankfurt, trying to see how far I can take them just by blitzing towards tech with an emphasis on being small and economic and avoiding other people's wars. Maybe when I have 10+ tech levels over absolutely everyone else I'll just steamroll them so that even if the emperor bitches about it, he can't stop me. Haven't decided yet.

The thing is, I haven't slept well in like 5-6 weeks. I used to get like 10 hours a night, now I wake up, open my laptop and load my save again, play for around 15-20 hours straight before I get too tired to continue, then wake up and do it again. The actual time I wake up and fall asleep varies and is dismissive, and I end up eating whenever I actually notice I'm hungry rather than on a semi-regular pattern. I don't even give any mind to my other hobbies anymore and my backlog has not only been not touched, I'm not even keeping tabs on what should go in it.

I have NEVER been sucked into a game like this before. is it just because it's a new genre for me, am I maybe a little autistic, or is this just norrmal for new people trying to overcome the learning curve? Regardless, I figure I'll lurk here for a while and hopefully absorb something useful, if only just perspective. Just from browsing this thread, it seems like this community has a decent learning curve too.

There's more shock damage early on, so defensive shock pips are more valueable than defensive fire pips.

Adding another offensive shock/morale pip over another defensive shock/morale pip may be the tipping point you need to stackwipe an enemy army in a fight.

Cavalry doesn't take as much damage generally, depending a bit on your nation(poland, hordes may use more cav or even go full cav).
For many nations I have cavalry for just the flanks and don't lose cavalry in most fights.
So their defensive fire and defensive shock pips aren't used.

For cavalry offensive shock deals much more damage than offensive fire, to the extent that the Dai Phat cavalry is actually a downgrade from the Mansadbar cavalry in the indian unit group.
