I don't use it, and it's more than five years ago I played minecraft.

But to my layman eyes, it seems like the utility tried to generate the elevation using the biome map. Maybe you're supposed to use the elevation map instead?

I saved that one a couple threads back, sorry mate, the name just struck me as perfect.

Uh, if you use the spit layout but switch it to TRAILING_ITEM_FLOW it will shoot the specific objects, if you use SOLID_GLOB it will shoot projectiles and "envelop the target in a burst of [item]!" as I recall?
>>
>>173165328
Ok, thanks max. I wanted to try mod in a pig-like race that can shoot quills from their backs like pic related, and have them settle in swamps and stuff.

Not sure what else I wanted to try adding to them, like civ ethics or whatever, so I'll just try make them a basic swamp animal for now. Any general modding tips for a novice you could spare?

Different creatures move at different speeds, and if you want your critters to run SANIC FAST (or walk slowly and crawl SANIC FAST or any combination like that), you can probably do it by tweaking the numbers.

>>173165690
Ethics are weird, but if I could go back when learning about modding and reorder how I did it:

Creature Variations: learn them, love them
Caste vs Creature level tags: the above really makes these important, but on their own they're a huge difference in how effectively you can express a concept
Body Default: everyfucking thing in here can be changed and fucked with, I've got sapient beards running around turning people into zombeard dwarves with [GRASP] beards
Body Detail Plans: black magic voodoo until you get the hang of them, but this is how you get the "damaged skin > muscle > bone fracture" type effects
Material Fuckery: the only thing that matters is what you name them and where you reference those names, the rest can be fucked with as you see fit, steel bone dragons ahoy!
Interaction Wizardry: love those syndrome tags, instead of having 6 interactions to change 3 creatures with 2 castes into 3 sets of 2 castes with variations, one interaction with 6 syndrome tags that select the relevant creature and ignore the rest works

Neither of those words are typically used as descriptors of real word architecture.

I noticed that often, after completing a single repeating rock block task, my masons will switch over to "No job" and run over to chill in the tavern, while another mason picks up the next rock block job. This is grossly inefficient, since the new mason will pick the boulder closest to him, ie. not one of the boulders next to the workshop, and carry it on his back through half the fortress. It doesn't happen every time, but often enough that I caught it. The quitting masons sometimes go do something else they need, like drink or sleep or pray, but occasionally they'll just have no job for a while and then switch to a green recreation job, implying that they didn't actually have a reason not to make more blocks.

What could be causing this? I'm thinking I can probably mitigate the effects by moving the workshop closer to the recreational areas, so the idlers will always be closer to the correct rock stockpile, but is there anything else I should be looking into? Can I do something with workshop stockpile assignments? I've never actually needed that before.

It takes a few ticks for a worker to choose their next job. In that interval another mason who's unoccupied can take the job, leaving the original mason to do what the fuck he wants.
If you want to fix it you can assign each mason's shop to an individual mason through workshop profiles. That's the best you can do. Or keep the rest of your masons too busy to take the job, but that's not as easy as it sounds unless you have a really busy fort.

By bloat, I mean it slows down the game in general. Also, not really. I have genned a Large 1050 year old world, expecting a fun adventure. I was met with empty hamlets filled with peasant skeletons, whole towns with warehouses full of food and even more peasant corpses and dwarven mountain halls (full of peasant corpses). The odd sentient creature I did run into was the random goblin that would be overseeing these various locales filled with bones. I think the only place with a sizeable population was the Dark Fortresses and Pits but, they were so populated that it made the game take 30 seconds to move a square.

That doesn't happen every time. World history can go various ways, depending on what your population caps and whatnot are like. I ran a 10 000 year worldgen a while ago, and although that world was fucking unplayable, it was unplayable for entirely different reasons.
It had some interesting legends, though.

I do agree there isn't much of a point in running history after it makes the game noticeably slower. I've recently taken a liking to 1050-year pocket worlds, but I wouldn't try that on large.

imo if you especially consider goblins from a narrative perspective, their lives should be nasty, brutish, and short. they should infight frequently, causing population drops (i realize regicide occurs occasionally but it doesn't cause civil war), they should have no health care system causing illnesses and the wounded to be left for dead (then possibly cannibalized).

they probably also fail to take care of themselves, so even if they biologically can live to 50, make it fairly high variance to die of old age or something

The deal breaker was that it got unstable. I'd visit a town and the game would just crash. I'm not sure what the specific mechanism there was, and I didn't investigate it very thoroughly. I didn't want to play in a world that could break without warning.
Also, whenever I started a new game, it took like three minutes sorting the coin information. Once I actually got an adventurer walking, I discovered that my starting site, a bandit camp with a few hundred elves crammed into it lagging everything to hell, was absolutely littered with huge piles of coins. Hundreds of thousands of them. Maybe millions. There were several stacks of over 40000 copper.

As for the legends, I suppose it wasn't anything too far out of the norm. I noticed there were a few elves and goblins still alive from the beginning of the world, and I checked their related historical figures. Turns out they were all poets who were taught by the same dwarf poet, who was the only apprentice of a goblin who usually preferred to work alone and even refused to teach his own son, and was murdered pretty early on by a human who was abducted twice as a child, having escaped and travelled back home after the first abduction... The kind of political intrigue the game generates right now. It got interesting once I started binging on it.
I should note that hardly anything happened after the year 1000 or so. The world reached equilibrium and just kept chugging on, with new critters being born and dying but nothing changing.
>>
Did toady ever fix the bug/feature where after you unretire a fortress all your food & booze is gone?
>>
>>173205492
It mostly affects worldgen and that two-week wait when you start a new game. There will be extra background processing in fort mode too, but probably not enough to be noticeable.
>>
>>173209330
>I'm not sure what the specific mechanism there was
I'm just making a wild guess here. I imagine there's some sort of site history/rumor table that gets populated with relevant entries as soon as the site loads to make it accessible to the player in conversation or story telling or whatever. It's probably not equipped to handle that much history. Hell, mayoral elections alone would probably fuck the system in half for an 11 million year old world.

>>173209330

It's the safest way.

If you fight inside (i.e. in tunnels and corridors) some retard will always run off and become separated from the rest, leaving them more vulnerable and causing needless casualties on your side.

When fighting in open fields, all militia members will see the same enemies, and thus also charge said enemies. No more cases of "only one guy sees the enemies, so he runs off on his own and gets killed".

Rocs are just big dumb animals.

They can easily decapitate unprotected or inexperienced soldiers though.

The best tactic (unless you want to try and cage it) is to just have your militia pile up on it.

It should've worked. 99%+ beverages that could be called an ale don't have enough alcohol by volume to act as an accelerant. Any outliers are only called an ale on a technicality or as a misnomer.

After losing many fortresses to FPS death after 10+ years of ingame time, I've decided to try making a fortress that will last 200 years.

>Settings
No Temperature, No Weather.
Small World, 2x2 Embark.
No flowing water.
>Mods
Muskets and Flintlock pistols for my dwarves.
Throwing Axes/Spears/Daggers.
Female Elf Slaves brought as pets on embark.
Display Cases for useless artifacts.
>Execution
Using Workflow and Auto-labor to minimize interaction time.
Alt-tabbed 90% of the time, just coming back to designate big projects at once and clean up.
All pauses all turned off except for invasion and beast.
Yearly atom-smashing of cluttered items, animals maybe children.

How feasible is it? Anyone here has experience with a fortress lasting for a 100+ years?
Is the old rumor true about all atom-smashed items still cluttering path-finding list making it get worse and worse like a memory leak?

>Is the old rumor true about all atom-smashed items still cluttering path-finding list making it get worse and worse like a memory leak?
The best existing research on the matter says no, but everything we know on the matter has always been conjecture and guesswork. The same research suggests that any items that leave the map do remain in item lookup lists, so invasions and caravans will gradually bog you down. You'll need to wall off your map borders to really prevent it. However item count is a really trivial contributor to fps death anyway. So are weather and temperature. Population control and small embarks are the tried and true methods of staving off fps death, and the only things you can do that will get you visible results. Except in extreme cases, any other contributors are rounding errors.

Would be sweet to designate a location as arena, and have people sit in chairs watching fights to the death and get happy thoughts.
They just need to react if any of the gladiators/beasts attacks a member of the audience or any non-participant, else they enjoy the show.

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of /dfg/ are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used the ASCII map when posting, but it doesn't show enough details and changes arbitrarily depending on your tileset! Whoops! You should always remember to export a detailed map instead! Posting an ASCII map when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post detailed maps, unless the aesthetics of the tileset are absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Killing enemies in fair combat =/= being sadistic and cruel towards prisoners. The latter definitly clashes with dwarven ethics.

If you check the ethics, it becomes clear that dwarves are the most compassionate of all the races. Yet for some reason, there's a meme about them being bloodthirsty bastards who masturbate to the screams of elf civilians being put in gas chambers.

I hold that since Toady's basically made the dwarves being possessed by the player's will a legitimate thing, they all completely change into a bunch of bloodthirsty psychopaths until you retire or push them too far.
Player forts are basically your average Dunwich-esque town where everybody's just a bit "off", and probably regarded by the other dwarven civs/forts as being one of those places you don't go unless you've got a deathwish.

Its just a custom elf pet caste, they cant be integrated as proper citizens, though they will do simple slave jobs like cooking and farming.
I had one Female Slave Elf trained for battle, and she fought off a goblin to save some dwarves. Motherfuckers ended up electing her as mayor!

Add this in the creature_standard.txt after elf male and female caste.
And gen a new world ofc. Tadaaaa, you can now bring elf slaves as pets on embark screen, caravans will bring them to you in cages, and their products.

After looking at that I had an idea, and I apologize in advance: https://pastebin.com/6E8p96Lw

Use [GO_TO_TAG:(the last tag in your caste definitions, usually the geldable line from male creatures)] followed by:
[APPLY_CREATURE_VARIATION:SLAVE_PET:female blah]

Where blah is the creature you're adding this to, so slave dwarves would use female dwarf, elves would be female elf, etc, and if I'm right it should add the slave pet caste with the right female blah milk/female blah cheese stuff, and options for male ones.

Then you can put [SELECT_CASTE:FSLAVE] and name them whatever, add description lines, caste tiles, etc like normal.

I was really bored after spending a few hours tweaking mods I was adding and trying to figure out why my custom ammo was broken, that I decided to add egg laying to my female elf slaves.
They only lay 1-3 of them, but they are three times the size of a hen egg, he he he.
I slightly regret this decision at this point, but seeing a human caravan bring elf slaves in cages and their eggs/cheese/milk to me was worth the laughter, good old dorf economy.

Now only if Toady could finally implement proper economy, world and fortress, I want to mint my coins and have dwarves use them for shopping...
I miss 40d economy even though it was broken as fuck.

When economy kicks in, you get to tax collector come by occasionally!
Any every dwarf in your fortress gets an account where money gets deposited based on how much work they've done that season.
They spend that money to buy food, and rent rooms.
They can also open shops and sell finished goods, and other dwarves pay for that stuff.
Also if you mint your own fortress coins, they will carry those coins around and use them to pay for stuff!

>Main problems were:
There wasn't any coin pouch, so they would spend months sorting and storing, spiting and stacking their coins around.
(Solution was to mint coins, but to keep them locked in a vault, so they could use them just by claiming ownership)
Children were really depressed as they had 0 income, so they kept going into negative eating only the cheapest food like plump helmets and sleeping in dirt.
(That was changed to children accessing both parents account and going on wild spending sprees, heh)
Nobles and legendary dwarves didnt have to pay for anything, so they were pretty much dicks.

Ahhh, good old times.

Entire fortress would collapse under stress due to sleeping and eating dirt for months.

So he decided instead of wasting time rebalancing it, to completely remove it, as it will come back anyway when he does world economy, prices going up and down based on supply and demand, caravans actually bringing more then ONE fucking bar at a time, prepared meal pots not being worth 20.000 dorf bucks etc...
When he gets back into doing world economy, he will do fortress economy as well and code it in a different way I guess.

Now we just gotta wait with the bote guy, while toady fiddles with poetry and magic instead of working on trade, economy and botes ;_;

so are the creation myths. before the world can even exist, we need some lore on how it was created and how it works.

I was just meming at you. I have no beef with vanilla though. A few ASCII tilesets I've used and enjoyed are bisasam (my favorite dwarves ever), taffer, and ravingmaniac (my favorite walls ever, pic related).
If you want ASCII-like CLA is great, and I use the dwarf/elf/human/gobbo/kobold graphics from it. I don't like the creature "graphics" personally, most of them don't look much like the creature they're supposed to be and look less like the letter they ought to be than just regular ASCII sets. That's just my preference, though.
Gemset is fully graphical and has a full complement of TWBT replacements, and kinda sorta (not)ASCII-like-like. Clearest sprites out there if that's your bag. I appreciate it from a comfortable distance.

Line the walls with iron chains. Leave corpses/body parts/totems all over the place. Engrave the walls with night trolls, bogeys, screaming creatures, unnaturally contorted creatures. Never give any dwarf a proper burial so they all come back as ghosts, and arrange for a variety of death causes so you get lots of different kinds. Make your halls narrow and unnecessarily labyrinthine, including dead ends and doors at the ends of hallways that don't lead anywhere, out of place furnishings, etc. to add a generally unsettling vibe. Maybe toss in the occasional room full of a random object that has no sensible use, like a room full of figurines of wolves killing a camel, or full of bins of bituminous coal earrings, anything that would make a person say "what the fuck was wrong with these people". You could also embark somewhere with evil weather, but outright reanimation/husking/thralling seems more like an "overtly hostile horror monster" scenario than a "super creepy haunted fortress" scenario.
Sounds like a neat kind of place to explore with an adventurer.

Is it worth it getting invested into this game?
I mean I like roguelikes and I like city building but learning all the shortcuts and interface is putting me kinda off. What is the grip the gimmick?
>>
>>173314114
Depends.

I should start by pointing out that DF is neither a city building game nor a roguelike.

Rather than a city building game, DF is best described as a The Sims-clone on a macro-scale. The management of people is handled indivudally, and rather than building an entire building with a click of a button, you build it from scratch by building the walls and floors tile by tile.

The only things DF have in common with roguelikes are the ASCII graphics and the tile-based movement grid. It has permadeath, but unlike most roguelikes, all the things you do in a world have lasting effects (these effects are sadly kinda marginal at the moment, though).
>>
>>173314858

I like providing my dorfs with luxury items like spider silk clothes, porcelain pottery and all kinds of exotic food and booze. I like just watching over my dorfs as they live their lives, make friends, get married and have babbies.

Look an anecdote. I played monaco for around 12 hours until I realized that its a pure managing game without any interesting shit happening ever.

>>
>>173315605
Well that depends on how you play, if you have the fortress open and don't seal yourself and ignore some dwarfs happiness they can start a tantrum spiral and loyalty cascade.

Everyone plays it differently some people just use cage traps and seal themselves in, some people build mega projects. Some even weird stuff with minecarts and magma.

I just love stressed dwarfs.

They always spawn at the edge of the map, dummy.

They don't get announced until someone sees them, though.

Hyperspeed launch with dfhack, was riding someone due to the trick Rumrusher added that turns your wrestling target into a mount and launches them at the cursor.

I just did the same thing with a Roc from a lair at the northeast edge of the map, rode it down about halfway into a town and right into the keep.

It's been a while since I've played DF, but I'm getting back into the swing of things and have a well running fort now. Breached the first cavern and have started capturing plenty of troglodytes and other shitbirds in cages. Any suggestions on what I should do with them? Worst case, I have an execution pit to dump them in, but I'd like a more fun use of them.

Finally managed to start converting the denizens of my fort to necromancy.

A long-term resident necromancer bard passed by some corpses and didn't resurrect them, so that's easier to deal with.
>>
>>173330893
How do you cull the zombies to avoid fps death?

If you attack them, they'll turn on you, even if you're a necro.
>>
>>173332085
No zombies yet, nobody has animated any corpses for some reason.
>>
>>173332276
They won't animate unless they're in combat, butcher them to prevent said animation or destroy them.

I think if all your dorfs are necromancers they should be able to herd zombies around like any other animal?
>>

I've never had a necro fort, but I think zombies just show up as any friendly unit on the "others" tab. I don't think you can control them in any way.

One of the visiting scholars read the only book (haven't copied it yet) and is keeping it in their inventory. If they try to leave the map I may kill them, although I'm also curious as to what happens when they leave the fort. Still, I'd kind of like to make some copies first. Thanks for the info.
>>
>>173334243
Try making the necros you already have into scholars.

They might write new necro books for you.
>>
>>173334561
Good idea. Though this fort is a bit of a mess with a low population and stuff strewn everywhere (I reclaimed it but it used to have like 200 dwarves), so I don't have many industries set up to make writing materials and such yet. I kind of want to make it a necromancy hub and unleash hordes of necromancers out into the world.

Got 20 full metal clad military training 24/7.
Decided to place 50 dwarves into militia, just to have them walk around in leather armor and individual choice weapons as last line of defense.
(took me 30sec to organize them, god bless the rapist)

Is there anything that could go wrong with this?
I made sure there's no miners, woodcutters, nobles or important craft dwarves in the militia, they go into panic room during sieges.
>>

All iron/copper/bronze/steel I buy(melt) from caravans and goblinite is turned into ammo to fight off the next siege and keep us alive.

I'm mainly asking from a gameplay perceptive if non-active militia will cause problems, like seeking trouble on their own instead of running away and similar.

Reveal the rest of any caverns you've opened, close off any caverns you've opened, delete your refuse piles, or forbid all your refuse from the stocks screen. Set standing orders to forbid death items/corpses to prevent it from happening again.
The first option is definitely the best, you're just asking for trouble having caverns open and not being able to see what's happening in them.

Well, the myth framework is what's going to carry all the magic, and after its in, the magic implementation will just be adding more and more magical effects that can happen.
Even for the first myth pass, I think you're supposed to be able to find the magical landmasses and dig up the dead god's bones or whatever. A lot of it is going to be legends type stuff, but some of it should be visible in fort mode as well.
>>
>>173352210

I have my doubt about this myth and magic

Will there be schools of magic or will it all be randomized?
>>
>>173352694
Randomized I believe. Toady explicitly said that he didn't want magic to be "gamey" so I doubt the spells are going to be able to fit into any form of classification.
>>
>>173348491

Do I use this with DFhack?
>>
>>173352694
I think he talked about it in some recent interviews- it's going to be randomized, but players can set the level of magic in world generation like most of the other options. So worlds can run the gamut from magicless low fantasy to magic is all over the damn place high fantasy.
>>
>>173353007
Yar, click raw > save page as > navigate to your df > hack > scripts folder, it should suggest the name questport.lua, then point the cursor at a spot on your quest log and run questport (or hit a hotkey, I've got it on shift+Q myself) and you go there. It doesn't respect being underground, you might end up still stuck in caverns if that's where you're using it, not sure, and if you want to travel out of a forbidden travel site (dark fort, lair, tower, mountains) MAKE SURE YOU DON'T TRY TO FAST TRAVEL BEFOREHAND, as long as you don't get the "you can not travel until you leave this site" message it is totally possible to questport out normally, otherwise you gotta do a wait/sleep to reset it probably.
>>
>>173353240
The options will be even broader than that. The lowest magic settings won't even have dwarves, and the highest won't either. The spectrum will be more like mediaeval human dirt farm simulator ---> completely procgenned bizarro magicland. The game we have now will be somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>173353240
>>173352961
I don't know why magic has yet to be implemented. It shouldn't be too hard to have a human throw fire or create a torrent of water.

>>173354808
That means your fort isn't accessible to goblins. You can retire it and try another fort near some goblins or a tower. Make sure to check your neighbors in the location selection menu next time by pressing tab
>>
>>173354647
Probably because Toady wants to avoid having magic be rigid and samey, and making everything about it procedurally generated so that it's not limited to Cast Fireball, Cast Bigger Fireball, etc.

Even down to the costs of magic. I forget the exact quote, but he said it could very well come down to a choice like "well, I want to cast X; how much do I like having most of my blood inside my body?"
>>
>>173354852

I think there are already syndromes which can turn your body parts into metal.
>>
>>173355047
I've had goblins come though, but it was only around 10. The goblin civ comes up in the civilization screen as well - the liason is always telling me about how they're conquering everyone.
>>
>>173355151
I get where he's coming from, he wants something that's unique and bizarre but I think he should tinker with basic stuff first and knock out the kinks before going all abstract.
>>
>>173355382
Well, then, just keep digging downwards, you're sure to find fun eventually.
>>
>>173355509
Yeah, that's true.

I feel like that IS his idea of tinkering with the basic stuff: getting the needlessly complicated framework into the game and letting the kinks wreak horrific havoc among players' dwarves before nailing it down further. The feedback would be a sight to see.

I know how to fake like 99% of that effect but you will wind up naked since it requires a body transformation.

>>173355509
Well, you can throw fireballs, big fireballs, clouds of dragonfire, shoot globs or clouds of materials which set shit on fire or begin freezing it to death, I think there's a way to straight up iceblock someone, and that's without getting into shit like shooting a cloud of dust at someone that makes their eyeballs rot, lungs fill with blood, and nerves just flat out stop working, or turn them into a creature made out of materials that burst into flame at room temperature and laugh as they instantly immolate without hurting anyone or anything around them.

Having crazy options and gadgets tossed into that mix with a big random generation side of what-the-fuckery rather than "oh yay, necromancers again, oh, and here's another werezebra, whoopie!" sounds great.

Focusing on basic stuff would just be "well fuck it, I'm glad the flame mages showed up now, I was getting sick of everything on the surface not being on fire" and that is doable now anyways!

>>
Any way to hack Dwarf Therapist to work with the current version?
>>
>>173361905
Depends on what you have available, and what you need.

For selling shit to caravans, stonecrafting is normally the easiest to get set up (unless all the stone is locked underneath an aquifer, in which case you have other problems): craftdwarf's workshop for rock crafts, and maybe a mason for statues and things.

Jewelry is about as simple, you just make the corresponding workshop and cut/set gems into shit. Woodcrafting also uses the craftdwarf, but you usually have better things to use logs for. And then there's bone crafting, you'll have animal corpses and bones/horns/skulls/ivory galore (unless you're in a necromantic biome).

If you have a ready source of fuel (magma, trees for charcoal, or coke/coal you can dig out), you might be able to do metalcrafting. If you have even one tile of sand or clay, you can assign a sand/clay collection zone indefinitely and do glassworking or ceramics (for sand, this is limited by how many bags you can store sand in).

Cloth you get from growing pig tails, processing them through a farmer's workshop, and then I think they're auto-spun into cloth if you have a Loom. Silk is generally auto-gathered from spider webs that's sometimes lying around in caverns.

Leather comes from the everyday murder of innocent and/or not so innocent woodland creatures that you get from running a fortress.

Dyeing stuff isn't hard too: from the start of the game, easiest is to grow dimple cups.

You probably won't sell soap, but it's better to have or medical emergencies. Making soap requires a wood furnace, an ashery, then a soap maker's shop. In that order, burn a log to ash, turn that ash into lye, and then make soap with lye and tallow (or rock nut oil, but you'll usually have loads of tallow anyway).
Unless Toady fixed the lye bucket storage issues, just disable lye storage in your stockpiles and leave the lye bucket(s) in the Ashery.

You'll probably end up with excess prepared food, you can sell that to carvans too.

The code goes wonky and basically causes a split as renegade dwarves side "against" the group they just attacked, except that pits them against other dwarves in the fortress.

The snatcher might've been affiliated with a group that also has ties to one or more of your military dwarves.

So I've read and reread a bunch of succession forts and other stories over the years, and after all this time I think I can speak authoritatively:
Doomforests, or specifically Taupe's turn in Doomforests, is simply the greatest DF story of all time. More amazing and incredible things happened just in that first half year than in many "legendary classics."

Read it from the beginning or even just skip to 1054, Malachite

I checked the reason - so basically my adventurer got an emotional responce and started crying after hearing some villagers talking about a guy giving up too early. It's probably the same for when you hear vampire/dragon/bandits rumors.
>>
>>173394082
Tears appear the first time you feel any strong emotion.

It can be because you saw someone die, but it can also be tears of joy, even for doing something completely trivial, like talking to your neighbour.

Also, I think there's a bug that prevents the tears from going away once you have them. Once you have a strong emotion, youäre doomed to a lifetime of crying.

I wouldn't just blanket the entire idle population into the library. If one of the shitty anti-craftsdwarf dwarves ever manages to write out a values-related book, that book will then influence every dwarf that reads it.
if they read it enough, they might be swayed by even the shittiest arguement against craftsdwarfship.

always always always try your best to find dwarves with "Values Knowledge" statements and then make them scholars. Every time they write a values-based book about the worth of knowledge, that's basically reinforcing an exponential desire for knowledge.
it's the meta-game of a marathon fortress mode game.

1. get scholars to write values-based books about the benefits of aquiring knowledge
2. get dwarves to read those books enough to where their personal values change towards wanting to aquire knowledge
3. someone makes a book about the benefits of craftsdwarfship, hard work, and skill
4. everyone becomes even more awsome at their job
>>
>>173399370
Values don't actually affect how they do their jobs, though. It's just something they quarrel about.

The only value with an actual effect is knowledge, since it's a condition for a worldgen civ to buid libraries in the first place.

How do I get small animals out of traps?
I tried everything the wiki and google told me.

>put critter in a cage
My dwarf just pick up the trap with the animal and put it in the cage. If I de-assign the animal they pick up the trap with the animal again and put it back on the stockpile.

>dump the trap
They take the trap with the animal and put it in my quantum garbage.

>melt the trap
They don't touch it because there is an animal inside.

>have someone adopt the animal as a pet
They don't want it because it's inside a trap.
>>
>>173400837
You can mark the vermin for dumping, also assigning him to a built cage should work.
Why are you even trapping for those little fuckers?
Just get a Mobile Animal Trap mkCAT and you're fine.
>>
>>173401002
>You can mark the vermin for dumping, also assigning him to a built cage should wo

If I use "k" I can only see the trap. Dumping it puts it in the trash with the animal still inside.
"v" doesn't react to the trapped animals at all.
Is there another buttom to dump animals?

Assigning the animal to cage has my dwarfs hauling them with their trap to their new home.

>Why are you even trapping for those little fuckers?

Sadly, which made me realize something regarding people "wishing Toady would focus on the graphics" and whatnot.

They're probably saying this thinking "Skyrim, but totally procedurally generated" without looking at the much more probable outcome: Toribash in the woods.

Necromancers will likely be completely replaced by more generalised wizard enities.

These enities may or may not be malicious, and may or may not have access to necro magic.

If a world has one or several evil wizards with access to necro magic, then we'll basically have necromancers. If not, we'll probably have something equally interesting instead.

>schools of magic
Possibly, but those schools will be procedurally generated.
Like, instead of there being fire mages because fire magic is a discrete thing, there will be a fire mages because of scholarly tradition dating back to the fall of the great earth-dragon Muckspunges the Pillars of Silence, upon whose teeth were written the words of power that allowed the mage-lords of the Tired Union, and others after them, to summon and bind the primal spirits of fire. Frameworks like this will arise, or not, depending on worldgen settings. Not only will the spells be random, but so will their philosophical underpinnings.
>>
>>173406000
That makes sense. I hope it's not like exceedingly rare though. But I guess Toady said there would be about 30 or so schools of magic in the first pass and about 5-7 of them would be in the average world, or something like that, if I recall. Uploading is highly respectable.

There is little to no conventional cuckoldry in DF.

HOWEVER, one time I was fighting some goblins, and ran into... the human queen, on their side! Naturally, I pinned her down and stripped her until she was covered in sweat and had passed out from exhaustion, repeatedly. Satisfied, I let her run off.

As it turns out, she became an apprentice to a goblin scholar, while her husband the king was still at war with them.

So its close to cucking but not quite.

Wasted a goddamn hour figuring out what the problem is, finally found it:
"It seems to be due to the new weapon wear system causing a segfault when a weapon mounted on a weapon trap wears down to its breaking point."

Welp, time to dfhack kill off the siege, then dismantle 3 lousy weapon traps I placed in the middle of a field just for fun.

Why won't my dwarves dump a discarded clothing item?
Is it because it's still owned by a dwarf?
>>
>>173411981

>>
>>173413341

>>
>>173413341
I'm still not entirely sure how the refuse system works, but I think clothing needs to be in tatters before it's dumped in the refuse pile.
>>
>>173263563
Giving your enemies a fighting chance when you execute them isn't torture, you dunce. Even if the odds are stacked against the prisoner of war.
Also, gladiatorial combat doesn't have to mean killing prisoners. It can also be fights between well-compensated professionals.

Dwarves have, among their other fine qualities, [ETHIC:KILL_ENEMY:ACCEPTABLE], [ETHIC:KILL_ANIMAL:ACCEPTABLE] and [VALUE:MARTIAL_PROWESS:15]. They have nothing against blood sports.
>>
>>173413862
Forcing people to fight in arenas against their will is a form of slavery (see gladiatorial combat as an institution in ancient Rome, for example). Slavery is punishable by death.
>>
How much different is the game gameplay wise when I pick a pocket world with 5 years of history vs for example a medium world with 125 years of history?

I don't mind losing out on historical events but how much does it affect civ populations and such?
>>
>>173414480
It's a form of execution, and dwarves are quite comfortable with PUNISH:CAPITAL.
Besides, they don't HAVE to fight, if they'd rather just surrender and die. It's merely an option they're given. You can't force anyone to defend themselves.
>>
How do i deal with a dreadfully dread force of evil?
>>
>>173414636
All the civs start with enough people to be sustainable, if that's what you're worried of. You'll get a bunch of migrants that are "the first of their kind" and don't have listed ages, but that's pretty much as far as the differences go for domestic populations.
Vampires, necromancers and werebeasts will be very rare in the young world, but you might have a few extra megabeasts. The really big things rarely die during worldgen, but it sometimes happens.
>>
>>173416063
I don't know of a single real life historical civilisation that practiced gladiatorial combat without also practicing slavery. A society which doesn't practice slavery is more likely to pick a different form of execution.

All this arena talk is just childish edginess.
>>
>>173416481
>I don't know of a single real life historical civilisation that practiced gladiatorial combat without also practicing slavery
Why do they have to resemble real life historical civilization? They're fictional creatures in a fantastic universe.
>>
How do I identify shopkeepers in adventure mode?
>>
>>173417101
The inner dynamics of the society must be consistent.

Especially in the future when Toady wants to simulate the development of societies.

>>173417458
In towns, they are found inside the shops (buildings with signs) or behind stands in marketplaces. Their profession reflects the merchandise they sell (jewellers sell jewelry, butchers sell meat, etc).

In forest retreats, there are only marketplaces, and they work the same as in towns.

In dwarven fortresses, there is no free trade, so there wont be any shopkeepers. Instead, you have to talk to their appointed broker (found in the depot on the surface). He will sell all items offered by the fortress.
>>
>>173418554
>make prisoners sentenced to death fight in an arena as a method of execution
Don't see what's inconsistent there.
>>
>>173416481
>All this arena talk is just childish edginess
Romans practiced slavery and had gladiator fights

Were romans edgy?
>>
>>173419487

What makes goblins dominate so much? Cause they dont have to eat or drink? Also, why are humans also such a populous race?
>>
>>173421961
Goblins start lots of wars all the time so they conquer a lot, and they have a demon leader, which wrecks everyone in wars.

For humans I'm not sure
