Anyone else having problems with citizens not claiming and sleeping in rooms?
I've got a dozen mercenaries that applied and joined my fortress, but they never claim empty room.
And when I go to manually assign them it shows it like they already have a room even though they dont (brown name instead of green).
So they end up sleeping on the barracks/inn floor all the time.

You can furniture entire room, move cursor to next empty room, finish recording, then just smack ctrl + p to keep pasting till every room is furnitured, easy as fuck.

It doesn't matter if they eat prepared meals or not. Every dwarf has a food preference, and the "decent meals" need will only be satisfied by eating it. Dwarves used to purposefully seek out preferred foods and drinks if they were available, but as far as I can tell they don't anymore. You just have to get lucky and have the right food available and have the dwarf happen to grab it.

Dwarf walks past shitton of prepared meals to grab a piece of raw uncooked wombat meat.
Check his preferences, he doesnt prefer it at all.

Those fuckers can starve for all I care if they dont want to eat masterfully prepared meals.

NEW UPDATE! WE CAN SAVE KIDNAPPED KIDS MWAHAHAHAHA!

>We rescued our first child! The seven dwarves are now caring for Obol, a four year old human they found in the goblin pits. An impressionable child, she inherited the goblin ethics of valuing power over others and her personal dream is to take over the world. I'm sure it'll be fine.

>I'm balancing out abstract equipment strength numbers and working more with the post-worldgen raid/battle code, since it wasn't really geared toward smaller numbers of well-equipped player dwarves fighting at sites. That'll merge in with the reports they give when they return, which is the next project.

> corpses will turn into skeletons and never disappear.
when underground.
refuse stockpiles themselves are special in that they automatically add wear to items which are placed in them (no matter what item!) however, this process is insanely slow to something like bones or corpses or cloth or leather, and will take like 2+ years or more.

in order to speed up the process, you have to expose the refuse pile to "Outside" which is easy to do by just digging a STRAIGHT VERTICAL stairwell upwards to the surface, and then removing the staircases (one by one!) by channeling back downwards.
you now have a single tile of "outside" available, which means you can quantum stockpile your skeletal corpses into that space.

>>
>>173438908

>Still believing in boogeymen
>>
>>173437848
quantum stockpiles are also piss-easy to do:

1. make a 4-tile stockpile set with the items you want. square, line, whatever; just make sure there's at least four tiles
2. assign 3 wheelbarrows to the stockpile so only 3 dwarves will work hauling at once if the item is heavy like stone (or massively sized dead bodies)
3. construct a track stop some place directly adjacent to that stockpile. (b-C-S) and then have it 'd'ump onto an open space to the north, south, east, or west. DON'T dump it back into the original stockpile; doing that causes an infinite hauling loop that dwarves can never resolve and will be stuck hauling forever!
4. put a new route (h-r) directly on top of the track stop and assign a minecart (v) to it. assign a new 's'top to the route, 'enter' to define the stop, and then delete (x) every setting there.
5. 'enter' to designate the same items you setup in step 1.
6. set a new 's'tockpile link, move the cursor over the stockpile you setup in step 1, and then hit 'p'
7. the most important step here is to setup a duplicate stockpile on the tile where the minecart will dump the items to, which has all the same settings as the first step. this is the quantum stockpile

be aware that only a number of dwarves equal to the number of wheelbarrows can actually haul to the qsp at a time. if you need more dwarves hauling, setup more step 1 stockpiles and assign more step 6 stockpile links.

>>
>>173478728
When ever I see screenshots of people's world gen they get 100's to 1000's of rejections, but I only get 1 or 2. Is it just a thing with large worlds, or when you set parameters?

Okay pretty new to the game, but there is only 1 volcanoe on my world that I can see, and it seems like fucking trash only having shallow metal. I know you need lava for magma forges, does pretty much every embark have acess to lava? Or only on volcanoes?
>>
>>173478728
Maybe... the issue with them is fucking demons. If you loom at all the goblin civs, usually the ones with fuck huge populations are the ones who still have a demon leading them. The civs that are dying usually have had their demon master killed

Line-art+text = .png (ping)
Photograph = .jpeg (jay-feg)
Animation - webm support = .gif (jiff)
>>
>>173479585
So it doesn't compress to shit if it's saved more than a few times?
>>
>>173479786
Minecart + impulse ramps = hilarious accidents and eventually access to lava where you want it (2 cart trips needed to get 4/7 so a forge built above the cistern will light up) unless you disabled the magma sea.
>>
>>173480016
That's a photograph though. Unless the background is actually pure white the filesize of .png will be large.

>>173480172
Files don't "recompress" when being downloaded.
>>
So I figure most people are pretty hyped about getting to aend groups of dwarfs offsite in fortress mode. But I kinda have some reservations over how this will work. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but wont Toady need to do something about the way offsite battles work? As it stands, unless you send your fucking A-Team out to attack your enemies, you will just be sending dwarfs to their deaths since offsite battles are basically one on one duels, which dwarves tend to lose (as evident by world gen).
>>
>>173480467
>>173436195
>I'm balancing out abstract equipment strength numbers and working more with the post-worldgen raid/battle code, since it wasn't really geared toward smaller numbers of well-equipped player dwarves fighting at sites. I don't personally know why photos are suggested to be saved as jay-fegs instead of pings, other than bimp filesize being fuckhuge. Also don't know why df exports maps as bimps. It's like "man, 3.5 mb is huge, but it is a big picture, but fuck it, let's go with the 168 mb format!" or some shit.

.pngs are losslessly compressed while some .jpg compression algorithms are lossy.
Bitmaps are uncompressed and probably were easier for Today to code the map export tool with.

Pngs are suited to images where there are only a limited number of colors used. But photographs/scans will use a large number of colors because even a "white background" generally actually varies slightly from pixel to pixel.(like if you open a scan of a paper in mspaint and try to fillbucket the white background)

No need to brag, you can "Bring up a specific Incident" in which you summarise your accomplishment, or if you have the time you can tell the story as a performance.

>>173480467
You're probably right but that doesn't make me less excited. Improved battles may be soon™ after. Megabeasts may still be best handled with adventurers, but your average invader's camp should be doable if you get to the point of having spare dwarfs to send off the map. Artifact hunts may not require great force either.

It's kind of a crapshoot. A lot will depend on what kinds of demons you get. You can do any possible combos with enough dwarves with adamantine weapons, a lot of planning, and some luck. Blind corners, staged attacks, and shooting galleries are necessary for dust/webs/fire, and you'll still suffer a lot of casualties. It's easier to do without dwarves at all. Checkerboards, cave in traps, upright spikes.
And yes, you can wall it off, the same way you would wall off anything else.

Depends on your fort's max population settings, and also on the state of your home civ. Unless your civ's functionally extinct (at which point I think you get a minimum of 2 migrant waves and then nothing forever), the migrants should keep coming.

I miss 90's and early 00's gaming journalism.

No sarcasm, no cynicism. Just a sincere fascination with the medium, as well as a good dose of optimism for the future.

Now it's all about praising ironically shitty indie games. The only thing setting a good game apart from a shitty one is the amount of layers of irony. The majority of all journalists, as well as the devs, are just #sorandom hipsters. See the people Toady has been associating with, for example.

I don't even mean this in a Gamergate conspiracy theorist kinda way. It's just how I see the recent developments during the 00's.

Unless the site is exceptionally hostile, you just need a pick, an axe, and an anvil. Everything else is gravy. Even the anvil's more or less optional, since a fort can easily survive without metalworking and you can trade for the anvil later.

Why?

It embodies what I love about DF. one doesn't 'win' DF, you just look over your stockrooms and treasure vaults and remember all your victories. You smelt down narrow armor and turn it into steel and arm your Dwarves with it. You dig deep and smite the Demons-if you've got the chops-and colonize Hell. You build high and delve deep, and know-You did this. No half-assed Bethesda consolation prize, no poorly-written Bioware bullshit, no Obsidian moral relativism, no Ubershit mapful-of-checkboxes-YOU. Everything that you do in Dwarf Fortress is wrought by your own hand, not you jumping through the hoops some focus-group pack of mongoloids set up so that they'd be just low enough to keep you jumping long enough to meet sales figures.

I still can't agree with that. If you don't use external tools, actually playing DF becomes fucking hard because of all the stuff you need to keep track of. Yeah, it's pretty easy when you've got like 10 dwarves and a small fort but trying keeping things together with 200 dwarves and a multilayer fort that goes down into magma .

The manager interface is incredibly useful.
>>
>>173517216
1. Shit performance. Think of a flood-fill in 3D space. That's basically the pathing. Except the method of finding an object for a job ignores terrain; so if a carpenter workshop finds a log 2 tiles away it'll task that even if the actual path is 100+ tiles. RIP framerate.

2. The Up/Down staircase is effectively a hole in the floor. If a dwarf ever loses their footing, such as dodging an attack, they'll fall through. All the way down and then splat. Or worse, they collide with someone on the way down, make two corpses, and collide with a third...

3. Speaking of attacks, they're basically impossible to defend unless you want to put floor hatches on every down staircase, and on every level. Have fun scrolling through that list when you want to attach a hatch to a lever. Fighting downward on them when an attacker is on them is basically impossible due to the above point #2.

4. They look like shit exactly because it's so fast and easy to make. No one is impressed and no one is pleased to see them.
>>
>>173526232
The game will never be as hard as it was in 2d until foodstuffs and drink can spoil.

>>173526381
Can you set labors through the manager now?
>>
>>173526509
No. You are rarely ever in a situation where you have to set labors more than a handful of times a year. The game is just that easy. Autists set every labor to perfection and think it's hard because it would take them an hour to do it manually, but since they've always done that they never realized it was totally unnecessary. I just let the cheesemakers and gelders do what they want unless I am absent a specific labor that must be done right now. Which is rare given the veritable flood of highly skilled migrants you get in recent versions.

An efficient fort could run with very little labor. A truly great fort is one that has tons of happy dwarves and security with as many idlers as possible. Dwarves work to live, they don't live to work. You're running a gulag.

Not for any serious reason, I just watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape and I'm now really upset that mental illnesses and stuff exist. The idea that there's a tiny, random chance you could be born with such an overwhelming defect, and basically either live your life unaware of the tragic misfortune that just happened to befall you, or just aware enough to know you will never be able to live to your fullest potential, because the universe decided that you amongst thousands, it is YOU who should have their life dictated by some inevitable and incurable problem.

Worse than any physical defect, worse than any acquired disease, the fact you are born into a life where you are automatically dependant, a burden, and in a constant state of helplessness, all down to a roll of the die, is just such an awful concept. We exist in a truly horrible place, where stuff like this happens.

All we can do is just escape reality as much as possible, either by playing dwarf fortress, or doing other things.

dwarves can intentionally climb down 1-tile cliffs now depending on the situation, such as a moat. they're too stupid to find their way back, though.
the same goes for enemies... climbing up the dry moat

the only surfaces dwarves can't climb on (or are less likely to) is smoothed natural rock walls, and constructed walls made from blocks.

You might want to make the crossbows out of bone or wood and only the bolts out of silver. The other way around really doesn't work and so long as your marksdwarves stay out of melee they'll be ok. > I'm not even sure how in-depth the river simulation is.
He had erosion code somewhere, but it either got chopped off or broke. It worked great for cliff forming i remember, don't know if it had any effect on rivers and other landforms. I think he's gonna revamp rivers somewhere around property arc, because it's directly connected to villages and economy (with botes) and should start making more sense.

You can dig down to the magma to solve the fuel problem, but otherwise you'll have to do a lot of trading and your equipment will still be subpar. Buy all the armor and weapons you can, and fill your militia out with silver hammers and crossbows. At least you should have no trouble buying whole caravans with metal crafts.
Don't forget you can maker armor out of leather and bone. It's far worse than any metal, but still beats going naked.

The embark tile is a reoccurring measure in the the worlds.

3x3 no matter what, with at least a bed. If they have a lot of crap I give them a cabinet to keep it in. If they're in the military they get an armor stand and a weapon rack.

Dorfs who make artifacts and Weapon Lords get bigger rooms. Nobles get the biggest rooms to shut them up, though my last set of nobles got their room put in a Microcline cluster for being whiny little shits.

I get really extravagant with catacombs, though. Regular ol' soldiers get 3x3 rooms, average crafters get 1x2 rooms with a door, haulers and the like get sargophaguses just sitting along the edges of hallways. Nobles get something big enough to shut them up. Weapon Lords and artifact crafters get 5x5 rooms with decorations and little attached tombs for their consorts.

I like to think the Dorfes as the most musical race.

>>173635840
Fliers often choose to wander to a spot that's behind a locked/tightly closed door and tank your framerate looking for a path to it they'll never find. Maybe that's what's happening?
>>
>>173641150
Well yee, except that this spot was edge of a map where 3-4 of them piled on each other and humped my framerate into ground.
Only could shoot down half of them, had to kill rest with dfhack else I might as well delete the fortress cuz I aint playing at 5fps when I know 70fps is where I as at before that pathfinding loop.

I wanted to allow foreign weapons to be crafted by dwarves, but I can't seem to generate a world with a civ that has anything but the default weapons. As I understand it from having discussed events with my friend later, the ghost was one of the miners that fell to the demon invasion (which lasted the better part of a week in-game)

He wasn't properly memorialized and so wandered around as a ghost for those few days, walking through walls and pulling levers randomly and such

Ghosts can "scare adventurers to death" instantly but I didn't know that back then

The trick is to visit the site with an adventurer, grab some sliver barbs, and haul them the new fort site. Either the seeds or the unprocessed plants will do, since milling plants into dye will give you seeds.
If you didn't turn bogeymen off at worldgen, you will want some traveling companions. The easiest way to find some is to pick a dwarven hillocks as your starting site, and recruit the drunks from the drinking mound.

Why is Likot Udendeb never discussed here?

It's top tier slavic humour set in the DF universe. And unlike that cheesemaker mspaint adventure, the OP isn't some special snowflake who uses "depression" as an excuse to stop posting for a year.

The whole thing has been constantly active since its start in 2012.

Well, you're best off just checking the thread. It's extremely long already.

It has several different OPs, so the art style is a bit inconsistent.

It's extremely liberal compared to Cheesemaker, and the OP does nearly everything the audience asks for. Maybe it's a bit too edgy at times, but it's still an enjoyable read. The shitty russian english makes in even more enjoyable, in a weird way.

I've been reading lore on the LotR wiki.

It would be really cool if you could eventually play as a Sauron-type person in adventure mode and bring the world into darkness and war.

Yeah but you can't really conquer anyone but humans, you can't forge magical artifacts, you can't corrupt elves into goblins, you can't command armies, etc.

The myth arc includes creation myths where other races are corrupted into goblins (read the bottom of the first paragraph in pic related).

We can just hope that similar things will happen during play, too.
>>
>>173686490
Goddamnit it don't even want to imagine how long it's going to take to finish the myth update.

But I'm hyped as fuck.
>>
>>173686959
His original estimate was early 2018 as the earliest possible release date.

Now that the artifacts are delayed by at least half a year, we need to add that (which means summer 2018).

Then, we have to assume that the myths also get delayed by 1/2 to one year.

That leaves us at early 2019 at its earliest, or summer 2019 if we're unlucky.

At least we'll have the artifact related stuff to play with until then.
>>
>>173687193
>That leaves us at early 2019 at its earliest, or summer 2019 if we're unlucky.
Eh, I wouldn't be shocked if it took until 2020 or 2021.

I mean I hope Toady has the foresight to break it up into reasonably sized chunks... but I'm not confident that he will.
>>
>>173688208
We can only hope he doesn't die first. I have no faith in his personal health.
>>
>>173688208
Hopefully, he'll keep his promise not to let us wait as long as before 0.40 again.

I honestly have a fear that the first myth release will be the new 0.40. That is, the release that took forever, promised everything, and ended up as a disappointing clusterfuck.

Of course, 0.42 cleaned up most of the weird shit in 0.40 pretty well, and in retrospect, the changes in 0.40 were obviously a big step forward for the game.

But still, the one and a half year where we were stuck with 0.40 was probably DF's rock bottom for me.
>>
>>173688642
Well, we'll see what his more specific plans are for it after this artifact update.

Honestly the artifact update doesn't sound that interesting by itself, but after magical artifacts exist it will be quite cool.

I don't give a shit about difficulty. For me a game doesn't need to be performance based to be enjoyable.

I just want a large living world with a lot of detail put into it. I want industries simulated as closely as possible to their irl counterparts. I want to follow my dorfs around as they live their everyday lives.
>>
>>173690519
Don't worry anon, before going into gameplay and roguelike/rpg stuff, we'll get a massive and rich ingame universe that can exist and live without player messing with it. No game ever was able to achieved that yet, Toady well be the first to step into that direction and he's doing his hardest to make it happen. Just believe in him and wait. Df isn't even the game anymore at this point, it's a fantasy world simulation. And we're JUST entering the most interesting and exciting part of the development. And it's the most unpredictable of them all imo. It may go so smoothly that we'll get an update before 2018. Or it'll take fifty million years and we'll only see something in 2021 at best.
>>
>>173520335
I stopped trying to specialize a while ago. I just bring 2 dwarves with proficient mining and 5 with proficient farming.

Those are the two things I hate waiting for. Everything else can be learned through experience.

For items I bring about 25 plump helmets to brew once I've made some barrels so I get a ton of drinks and some seeds to start farming with, a bunch of milk to turn into cheap cheese, sand for the free bags and some basic supplies to keep my dwarves alive while I get set up.

Also goats for cheap wool and milk.

Dwarf fortress has multiple layers, more possible population and a shit ton of wars.
>>
>>173711883

That and the small numbers. I don't have a shit computer and if there are more than 20-30 pawns on the map at once, for any reason, the game slows to a crawl. I just want to fight a massive urban battle in my built up base with higher than 15 FPS.
>>
>>173710621
Libraries, Taverns, Temples were added to the fort mode.
Also world was activated, so now time passes in the "real" world while you fuck around in your fortress instead of time standing still.
Also armies move around and assault shit instead of magically spawning out of thin air.

Now fuck off for a few days and come back when you get back into the game:

Something must be wrong. My computer is pretty dated. Built it early 2010, and I never had any issues with fps. Even when you get those "large" tribal attacks with like 20-30 tribals along with my 12 or sp colonists.

Tbh though my biggest gripe with the game was that the world doesn't feel nearly as alive as DF. Just all felt soul less. Found myself wishing I was playing DF instead.

Here's a tip:
You should have spent that week playing the fucking game while reading up on what you cant figure out how to do, instead of wasting yours and our time.
You cant learn the game just by reading shit, play a few days and after a few forts keybinds will get into your blood and you will never look them up again.

UI isn't as horrible as people say, you just need to know basic English, everything is written on the screen, you can do that much?
>>
Sometimes I think that people post threads prematurely just because they want to be the ones to make the new thread, and maybe use some OC of their's as the OP. Which is strange, since premature threads often seem to have boring OPs, which don't have much thought put into them..

Just in case you don't know, you are using raws for Phoebus or something similar, despite having a tileset not intended to be used with those raws.

I can see that because your walls are ä and å. They're not supposed to look like this. See here for a list on how they should look:
http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Stone#Stones_forming_entire_layers

You probably had Phoebus or something similar installed, and when you changed to your current tileset, you either forgot to change the raws back to default, or only did so for the default raws, not your save folder.
