Guys, please....help me....

I want to enjoy CKII so much but I don't know how to get any enjoyment out of the game.

I did the tutorial like 3 times and I feel like they only tell you like 5% of the game.
Every time I do a battle I lose, even if I make sure to have like quadruple the guys as my opponent.
I don't understand any of the broader game mechanics.
I'm nowhere near the level I should be for having purchased this game in like 2014.

Is there anything else I'm missing? Any other tutorials I need to read?

So far as I'm aware Quantity still has a policy which boosts your colonization associated with it. In vanilla it used to be a free (well 1 military mana) colonist and it was OP as fuck. Even if they removed that it should still provide something like colonial growth which is really good, and it'll help prevent your manpower from going to shit.

But as for whether it'll transfer to your CNs, no. They have their own default ideas which they're given or they select automatically, so far as I know. You'll just have to expand them quickly enough for their manpower and force limits to not be a problem for too long.

It depends on what you're trying to do, what policies you have available, and what your ruler's stats are, but as long as you're not behind significantly in tech it can often be worth it. Faster colonies is going to be better than maintaining strict military tech parity with your neighbors, for example, because in the long run you'll starve them of wealth and secure shitloads of it yourself, and you'll be able to beat them just by outspending them.

That said, obviously don't neglect anything too far. If you're more than 2 levels behind don't waste a policy, but if you're up-to-date and your ruler's stats look good, there's no reason not to invest in a policy if it gives you strong benefits.

Not quite. Every time Burgundy is at war, with an increased chance if they're losing poorly, there's a chance that an event will fire where their king and his heir dies. If that event fires Burgundy gets split between France and the Emperor. So while it's definitely a good thing for you, keep in mind that it'll also make France stronger. Granted you can take France with two PUs, but that's for now; late-game, and with other allies, France is monstrous. Keeping them happy might be a good idea. Alternatively, as soon as you can warring them for any Imperial territory they hold and trying to keep them impotent is the other (albeit much more costly) option.

You should get a CB against any prince that annexes another prince (so long as the annexing power doesn't have a core on the territory, I think) whether you have the first reform or not, unless they changed that. But if they did change it I assume that the first reform will unlock that CB, yes. It also allows you to declare war for any Imperial province held by a non-Imperial power.

Why? This early your authority should be growing pretty fast. Only around the period of the Reformation does IA get dicey. Ideally you should have two reforms passed before the Reformation even happens.

It chugs along nicely when I'm at peace but the internal wars annoy me. Right now Alsace (the vassal of Provence) is excommunicated so Baden and Burgundy have attacked them (and, funnily enough, Burgundy is losing). I've got bags of time before my truce timers with Venice and Rome are up so I might just jump in, smack Provence and see if I can get Alsace back.

I'd say to only do that if you can create a very strong, singular vassal state in the south. And ideally you'd want to take a bit of territory, core it, add it to the HRE, then release the vassal there so they're an Imperial prince, since that'll increase the amount of votes you get in the Diet, as well as IA growth (and it'll mean they're annexed for free once you become the HRE).

Diploannexing might not do it. Might also be because there was a Savoyard core there (not sure if there was, just a possibility).

As they should. You need to maintain preeminent power and a large number of princes if you have any hope of centralizing, much less winning the Thirty Years' War.

Do whatever you can to keep that IA growing and keep the number of princes high, so long as it doesn't disastrously trash your manpower to do so.

I don't know where you'd be developing it, but provided it's in a province which the Clergy doesn't control, yes. But the change will be slight--maybe enough to take them below 80%, but it might take several increases to do so. Also, keep in mind that increasing the production value of gold-producing provinces above 10 runs the risk of their running out, so don't improve them higher than that.

Another thing I remembered--I think the timer for the event where Burgundy's king can die ends at around 1490, so beating them up as frequently as possible in the meantime is a very good idea. You want to encourage their king to die so you can get that land.

Don't really know about any good resources, just play the shitty tutorial anyway and start of as a mediocre Allied nation (Canada is a good choice). In this way you can learn the basics of research, production, tech, combat etc (remember to auto-trade and auto-spy). The biggest advantage of playing a nation like Canada is the ability to just fuck around and assist the French in 1940 and the UK in Africa. I'd advise you to cheat 'nofog' your first playthrough, to actually expierence what is going on military-wise.

How do I get good at the military aspect of CK2?

I keep losing battles against inferior opponents, the only way I ever win a war is if I'm a kingdom and conquer some two province pleb

I upgrade my castle so that I have more guys, I use the best commanders I have and try to look at their traits so that a guy with "flanker" goes on the sides and whatnot

What exactly does a vassal represent in eu4?
In ck it is obvious: a king can have a duke as a vassal, a duke can have a count and so on and it represent feudal system of delegation of land management.
But in eu4 you can have a vassal that has higher rank than you and conquering land and vassalizing it are two separate things.
Is there some things in history that it is supposed to represent?

If I'm a poor coloniser in EU4, should I not take Expansion ideas? Just use the two colonists I get and focus valuable regions?

I'm confused about how personal unions in eu4 are created diplomatically. I had the same dynasty as Spain and claim throne active, but when the ruler died without an heir a noble ascended to the throne.

Is personal union formation based on a percent chance of some sort even if you are the only claimant and have the same ruling dynasty? They had a colonial nation and union with Portugal as greater member if this factors into this somehow.
