I know you guys hate spreadsheets (or at least I do) but for this, I really have to use one - if anyone's still interested, of course.

Basically, this is a comparison between purely Civilian, and purely State run economy.
Taxes are assumed to be 25% - so, 75% remains in Civvie hands.
Factories cost 200 Bux to build, and give 20 Bux per turn.
Both start the same, but under State, half the Taxes are spent on Factories, and half on Navy/Fleet - while under Civvie, all can be spent on Fleet.
>>
>>170605893

>>
>>170606010
Thing is grenadier's grenades weren't high explosives, so they could easily start fires.

>>170606058
>it kind of makes sense
It doesn't. I have my own arguments against weed, but Quentin's argument is that it's against the law. A stoner's argument isn't that it isn't against the law, a stoner attempts to outline why it SHOULDN'T BE against the law, because there's nothing wrong with it in and of itself, or so the argument goes. Quentin preassumes that the stoner is wrong and then proceeds to engage in circular logic - it's against the law so it should be against the law, which is why it's against the law in the first place.
>>
>>170606126
Ha, okay. I guess that makes sense.
Through I expected that with all the gunpowder improvements, grenades would be a lot more useful.

>>170606204
That's not the stoner's argument, he just says that "weed is okay in moderation". Quentin just compares it to dire stuff.
>>
>>170606000
>genocide in moderation

>>
>>170606509
That means murdering only the deviants.
>>
>>170606445
>Through I expected that with all the gunpowder improvements, grenades would be a lot more useful.

Early grenades were more what we now know as satchel charges/C4 - shit to destroy bunkers, buildings etc. Todays greanades are anti-infantry weapon.
>>
>>170606032
what gemu
>>
>>170606445
The stoner's argument is that "weed is okay in moderation" which implies that it shouldn't be against the law when used in moderation. Quentin's argument is that since it's against the law it should be against the law and that since it should be against the law that's why it's against the law, which is circular reasoning. He brings up murder and rape and whatever too for that reason - these things, that most people believe should be against the law, are against the law because they should be against the law, so therefore anything that is against the law should be against the law.
>>
>>170606573
Just how big where these grenades? Do they have a specific name?

I see.
It makes sense to say that if something is forbidden, then it's forbidden, but if we're debating a possible use, it serves no purpose.
>>
>>170606706
Right, that's the point. The stoner is saying 'well it's forbidden but it shouldn't be forbidden let's change it'. Quentin just reiterates the fact that it's forbidden - well yes, everyone knows but that's not the point.

You know when you think about it ES2 combat isn't all too different from Stellaris combat. Think about it in both game controlling your fleets is just telling them where to go where to bomb what to kill etc. When combat happens in ES2 or Stellaris you don't get to micro your fleet like where to position each ship or which ship attack which enemy and stuff.

Thoughts?
Also i like ES1 and 2 but Stellaris is better IMO

Same start, but State has to spend on both Fleet and Factories - I assumed something like 50/50 distribution.
Also, State DOES get taxes - which is where it's 1000 capital (on both sides) comes from.
>>
>>170607076
>A state-run economy would still get taxes.

>>170607195
That's foolishness though, you're assuming that a state-run economy loses access to the factories and liquid capital, when both exist within the state to begin with. A full state economy can by definition leverage MORE, not LESS, of the internal capital and production.

3000 STARTING WEALTH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TAX

it's still not equal and state is already kicking civvies ass
>>
>>170607371
No you dumb fucking shit
1. Civilians will NEVER spend all that shit on the fleet and factories useful to you
2. That's not an equal start.
3. Where the fuck is your money going?
You have to understand that not simulating the civilian economy doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the fucking game, it means you can't interact with it. The civilian economy MUST EXIST within the fucking game, you might not see it but it's fucking there.
A fully state run economy would have the power of the civilian economy behind it because the civilian economy exists within the state economy
>>
>>170607371
What the fuck is even happening here? Are civilians and state seperate or what? In an actual game, the current economy would be the sum of the State and the Civilians. It's not the right side right now.
>>
>>170607708
>Are civilians and state seperate or what?
The citizen is only a part of the state. Without the state, a citizen is nothing.
Slavery is freedom.
>>
>>170607523

>1. Civilians will NEVER spend all that shit on the fleet and factories useful to you
You (the State) are spending the taxes on the Fleet - Civvies just spend it on factories.

2. Same amount of money = equal start.
Money being the key here - yes, it is equal.

As a point of reference: in my book, State economy = State-run economy.
Basically, nationalized factories - which you usually have in games.
>>
Oh, and:

>>170607523
>A fully state run economy would have the power of the civilian economy behind it because the civilian economy exists within the state economy

That's what I'm aiming at with the State economy here.
>>
>>170607859
Yeah but you're retarded, see, because the the current game includes both, you wouldn't get a huge boost to your economy by simulating the civilian economy. The civilian economy is just handwaved into your actual economy right now.
I support private sector simulation but your sheet is being dishonest by making it seem like the state side is tiny compared to the civilian side when the current situation isn't stateside only.
Also, a state-run economy wouldn't lag behind a civilian economy simply because all the money is still in their hands.
>>
>>170607928
In term of gameplay, a state-controlled economy cannot grow on its own.
>>
>>170607948
>Yeah but you're retarded, see, because the the current game includes both, you wouldn't get a huge boost to your economy by simulating the civilian economy. The civilian economy is just handwaved into your actual economy right now.

>Also, a state-run economy wouldn't lag behind a civilian economy simply because all the money is still in their hands.

Yeah, the spreadsheet is simplistic, sure - but the endresult is the same.
The current situation ISN'T stateside only?
Really? You (the player) aren't the only one giving orders to build (and pay for) Factories?
>>
>you can't inject funds in private sector to boost it
>>
>>170608109
>the current situation ISN'T stateside only?
It can't be, because without the simulation of a civilian economy either that economy doesn't exist (and therefore can't be simulated) or is being handwaved and incorporated, and this includes factory building. Civilians don't magically poof shit into existence either, the point would be that you represent the ENTIRE economy.
>>
>>170608064

??? Which game?
I'm not arguing it can't grow - or that it isn't viable - I'm just arguing it's an inferior choice.

>>170608146
Sure you can.
You can also build all the State Factories you want.
The question is why would you?

>>170608195
>without the simulation of a civilian economy either that economy doesn't exist (and therefore can't be simulated) or is being handwaved and incorporated
Bingo.
Currently, it's a part of State economy.
And, again, true & possible - just not optional.

> the point would be that you represent the ENTIRE economy.
Exactly - you (the player) run the entire (State) economy.
>>
>>170608341
Wait, we're not talking about Distant Worlds?
>>
>>170608341
>Exactly - you (the player) run the entire (State) economy.

>>
>>170608386

>>

If it's the corporation shit, that sounds nice. If it's communism, it isn't and too much of a pain to put in.
>>
>>170608341
>The question is why would you?
A state economy is by definition more efficient at what it chooses to do. The question is whether or not what it chooses to do is also the correct thing to do.
In games, because shit is solveable and you know the variables, a state economy is 100% better than a civilian one, save for the extra micromanagement.
>>
>>170608398
>You, the player, run the entire economy.

So, it's either a State economy or State-run economy & basically the same thing.
Btw: State = Government in my book - just to be clear.
National economy = State + Civilian economies.

You have NO FUCKING IDEA what you're talking about. The state economy refers to the part of the economy that is completely controlled by the state. The state run economy means a national economy that is heavily or completely controlled by the state.

>national economy = state + civilian economies
Yes, no shit, but because you, as the player, control the entire nation (and NOT just some abstract "government"), either there is no civilian economy to be simulated or you're also controlling the civilian economy.

The problem is that the game is coded poorly AND it isn't made with modern CPUs in mind. The game is coded for single core CPUs. Today's multicore CPUs are not able to handle this things because while you get MOAR CPUs, each individual one is weaker. DF has this same problem. The game can one run on one CPU and since it is so weak compared to Dual or single core CPUs of ages past, the game collapses after you do too much.

Freeworld Alliance, confederacy of US, South American countries and surviving democratic European states led by charismatic Max Finch stands against both the world wide muslim Caliphate, build on the ruins of France, Germany, Swden and UK and Middle East as well against Asian Trade Coalition, Chinese dominated alliance of Asiatic countries.

Yes, because it is inefficient. Managing slaves is expensive, and slaves don't produce as much as properly-motivated workers.
>>
>>170661193
Early game slaves outproduce normal workers. It takes time to stack up those happiness bonuses to get pops with 90%+ happiness bonuses. Slaves don't scale well into mid game though, and the more of them you acquire the bigger the risk of a devastating slave revolt that could fuck up your entire empire's economy. Long term, stacking bonuses to happiness and lowering ethics divergence makes for an obscenely prosperous empire.
>>
>>170661605
slaves + slave centers + very strong + industrious make fuck off huge mineral production
>>
>>170662003
Yeah by stacking happiness bonuses gives you bonus to all production, including research, which is vital going into late game. That's why happy free pops > slaves in the long run.

>>

No there is not, it's better to learn how to deal with them than avoid them. As well, the USF is a pretty difficult army to learn with, Brits or Russians are much stronger. Just because you have to micromanage USF tanks so much because their armor is trash.
>>
>>170666362
Well, I don't have Russians in Company of Heroes, just the Americans, the Britbongs, the Nazis, and the Super Nazis.

>you have to micromanage USF tanks so much because their armor is trash
Huh? I thought americans tanks were sturdier than the others.
>>
>>170666561
Compared to Comets in the British armor, and compared to German panthers, they are really bad. A Pershing can barley go toe to toe with a panther. If your talking about COH1 then idk about it that much, but COH2 it's like that.
>>
>>170666735
I'm talking about Company of Heroes.
But you may be right, I tried making some tanks, they got massively slaughtered by the German Panzers.
>>
>>170666561
Russians aren't in Coh1

American tanks in coh1 are more hybrids, you simply can't rely on them to do enough damage alone. so you need to mix in some at guns and bazookas.
>>
>>170666879
Just try and keep tank destroyers in the back line, and get vision on their tank with infantry. Your tank destroyers should out range normal tanks.
>>
>>170666981
>>170667003
Okay, so as an American, I DON'T use tanks to fight tanks. Got it.

Guess I'll use the anti-tanks cannons and bazookas a lot more. Is it viable to use infantry against tanks, or am I supposed to use them anyway?
>>
>>170667112
If you have multiple tanks try to flank around and hit them in the back.
>>
>>170667112
As long as they have bazookas, yes. You can also try and bait enemy tanks into a trap, have your tanks go behind and get those sweet rear armor shots.
>>
>>170667301
Well, in my first game, they actually had more tank than I did, and they were the big, scary, hulking type. The huge, uberpanzer type.
But I'm still discovering the game so far. I haven't tried the brits or the elite panzer nazi.
I'm scared of the elite panze division to be honest.
>>
>>170667659
Here are a few tidbits.
>the builders don't stay at the base, have them moving forward
>sandbags are better to stop infantry than barbed wires, but sadly work as cover for them
>mortars are slow to set up but at really good for psychological warfare against a human opponent
>same with snipers, people tend to focus on them
>the more holes a house has, the more people can shoot from there
>machineguns are deadly against uncovered infantry but are useless against vehicles, even light-armored one
>if you're gaining the advantage, don't let it go, the enemy will counter attack with tanks
>don't play around like in Age of Empires or Supreme Commander, you can perfectly make a comeback if you're not finished
>not all commandants are balanced : picking infantry commandant as an allied and then staling is not a good idea, you're supposed to rush
>as a German, don't bother picking anything else than Blitzkrieg
>>
>>170669846
Oh yeah, and snipers aren't that good. Don't put too much hope on them, they're not one-man armies.
>>
>>170667659
Rangers my dude, Rangers
>>
>>170671436
Aren't they limited to para commandant?

Anyway, I really like how different the factions are. I played vanilla Company of Heroes years ago and was vaguely aware that an expansion added the British, and that their HQ was moving, but I didn't know the infantry system was also different with the officer system.

I wish there was a Star Wars game like that like with Stromtroopers fighting Rebel scum.

rolling up a new start to stellaris ad im wondering if wormhole generators are worth it?
>>
>>170676104
Wormholes are hard to use if all you're used to is warp and hyperlane. Exploring is going to be slower and you won't be able to chase enemy fleets around like you're used to. Assuming you understand how wormhole travel works in the game, you'll want to be sparing with your generators in the early game. The energy cost for them is tiny, but it adds up pretty quick when your energy income is only in the single digits. Generally you'll want a wormhole generator in every system you have a colony or outpost, plus generators as way-points for longer distance travel, placed at the edge of your jump range (these can later be removed when you upgrade your wormhole tech and increase your jump range). A key thing is negotiating wormhole access with other empires, which isn't that hard to get as long as they don't hate your guts and have open borders with you. I also like to build generators at the homeworlds of any vassals or allies I have so I can quickly come to their aid if necessary.

The Unbidden rek you because they have god-tier evasion, an advantage that arc emitters negate because they have 100% accuracy. Disintegrators do not have 100% accuracy and therefore are not fit for this purpose.

Morning lads,

My friend gifted me a legit version of Stellaris and Civ 6 on steam as a late Christmas present.
I'm really enjoying both of them, but the DLC seems a bit too expensive for what it's offering - yet my friend says it's worth picking up.

If I used cs.rin.ru to pirate the DLCs for both Stellaris and Civ 6, would they both work on multiplayer games?
I've used to cs.rin.ru to pirate all of the DLC for CK2 (legit steam) and that worked like a charm.

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>170709480
Generally for paradox games, if the game is hosted by someone with the DLC everyone gets to use the features. So you don't need to pirate for that.
>>
>>170709607
Ah right okay.

So even if I did pirate the DLC for Stellaris, i'd still be able to play with my friend who has all the DLC?

Does the process of installing the pirate DLC into your directory stop/block online connection, like multiplayer?
Or am i just worrying about nothing?
>>
>>170709749

2 out of 5 points is a pretty big chunk

if you go to google you'll find many people have the text issue
3/5
the game does play itself, you can put full automation and leave it on and the AI will play for you as if it was an NPC empire
4/5
ship editor is a matter of opinion, but I do think it lacks easy part categories and the endless list of ship graphics that you can only scroll slowly through that have no relation to the actual function and size of the ship is pretty horrible

what's "mostly" full of shit about 4 or 5 out of 5 right?
>>
>>170712051
>if you go to google you'll find many people have the text issue
Even through the text thing makes sense, bringing google into it is stupid. If you go to google, you'll find male people believing they're pregnant, or teenagers thinking they have Asperger.
>>
>>170711936
they don't inhibit FTL, so enemy fleets can basically teleport directly to your homeworld, kinda puts a dampener on how satisfying combat is
>>
>>170712138
Gravity wells are supposed to inhibit FTL?
>>
>>170711936
Depends on a lore of the game universe.
In some SF settings gravity well disables hyperdrive etc.

I actually had an idea to make mod like that for DW - mod where you would have to travel to system outskirts on normal engines before engaging hyperdrive but its impossible to do on that engine IIRC.

>>170712051
>if you go to google you'll find many people have the text issue
Yes and there are options to enlarge this text.

>the game does play itself, you can put full automation and leave it on and the AI will play for you as if it was an NPC empire
No it does not.
It has an OPTION of playing itself with great detailed auto option that can be tweaked to your hearts content.
I personally play on full manual.

>ship editor is a matter of opinion, but I do think it lacks easy part categories and the endless list of ship graphics that you can only scroll slowly through that have no relation to the actual function and size of the ship is pretty horrible
It could use some sorting, thats it.
Its like Aurora lite, its not lame like Stellaris where ship can have only x weapons, y engines etc.

>>170712138
There is a hyperdrive inhibiting tech but its kinda down the tech tree - they are incrediblyy handy when dealing with pirates tho.

>>170712186
it's just nicer when games do that so you don't teleport directly to your destination, which makes tactical maneuvering meaningless

>>

Yes there are at least for main map UI.

I'm a collectivist fanatic militarist European Alliance that went hard right after widespread nationalist uprisings in the first half of the 21st century and decided to fuck off from Earth forever like the elves leaving for Valinor. Can I justify forming federations and uplifting primitives, or should I just exterminate them all? I'm not very good at this game yet and I'm wary of starting war with the galaxy. The birds to my left are friendly and federation builders, but I'm also in a position to exterminate them now if I want to.

I don't know what to do. If I form a federation is there a way of guaranteeing that I'm always first among equals so to speak?
>>
>>170712368
Warping on top of the enemy planet is usually a very bad idea, because the AI will keep their shit directly on said planet, so your ships will get sniped.

>>
>>170712423
the game plays itself by default, that is the experience you will have when you boot it up for the first time, and the game makes no attempt to teach you how to play it, de facto it plays itself

DW ship editor is not good, it's difficult to find the parts that you're looking for, and the ship graphic selector is beyond horrible, there isn't anything else to the editor, it's just hard to use for the things you want to use it for. that makes it bad

there are no text size options, you can claim there are, but it's factually untrue, it's one of the big negatives of the game since people afflicted by the text issue can't even scale it up to make it more readable

I plop a monument of purity and an art statue if I have access to a artists enclave and they're then happy enough to be hated but members of my empire.

It didn't always work out well, because of poor weather and government-engineered famines, but that doesn't mean the concept isn't there. And it's not like they're the only communists to go that route. Hell, Maoist Chinese constructed incredibly fucking elaborate show villages to convince the party that they were successfully reaching a standard of agrarian idyll, and I've also heard something about a Cuban initiative to distribute a plot of land to each citizen because of this philosophy.

That has shit synergy with agrarian idyll, since Agrarian Idyll makes you want more farms, but the trait makes you need less of them. Why should you both increase and decrease the value of something?

I also wouldn't go for Adaptive, since if you're playing a pacifist xenophobe game, you're free to take your time, which means you can stay small until you're ready to terraform.

Anyone else only use Clones as their armies?

>One mass army, can overtake anything
>Leave behind clones to garrison until the end of the war
>Maximize garrison count, and keep production of armies high during war time

The other armies take too long to build, and cost too much if they are going to be garrison forces. I've found that the AI can't manage an interplanetary reclamation and a garrison at least slows other players down.

Depends on the Empire I'm playing. Even though AI '''''garrisons'''''' make army composition irrelevant, I try to roleplay it as best as possible.

>Dick expansionist Xenophobe
>Send in millions of Xenomorphs to indiscriminately kill everything and then replace them with defensive troops once they're safely contained on their transports again

>Authoritarian state that's relatively neutral towards xenos
>Throw waves of cheap assault armies at the problem until it's fixed

>Empire with Psionics
>Psi armies for days and cheap defensive units supplemented with Psi warrior attachments

>Democracy that doesn't like the PR problems that come from casualties
>Clones and Clone Commandos

Not robots+drones? They're expensive and not as good as other military units but I use them when I want to pretend I care about the people.

Oh, yeah.
It's (basically) a pen-and-paper 4x.
Of course, it was made back in the day when the top PC's had 133 MHz processors & 2 MB or RAM - so you had to do everything by hand, and it quickly became a spreadsheet simulator to put Aurora to shame.
You (basically) need to be an accountant to get through the 'basic' IRS reports.

OTOH - the amount of control you get over your fleets (and battles) is awesome.

Reading Steve's Rigellian campaign AAR right now, and the Battles (or at least their descriptions) make me drool.
Of course, since (one of) it's makers was David Weber, it's probably because it's basically something like 'Honor Harrington - the Wargame' - but without the Mary Sue bullshit.
You can easily see the ship strenghts/weaknesses, and how they were/weren't exploited.
Unlike the PC 4x, where it's all basically: 'Build big fleet, click on the enemy - and wait for the numbers to be crunched to see if you won or not'.

Oh hell no - I'm talking about Starfire & Starfire Assistant.
(Although, I'm not really sure you can actually fight battles in Starfire Assistant ... gotta check it out)

What I meant is the overall feel of the battles - not the autistical angle calculations.
There's very little angles in Starfire - and they're either of Ships' blind spot or Spinal-mounted weapons.

Also, Attack Vector Tactical covers only encounters with few ships on either side in battle - Skirmishes, really.
Starfire just as 'easily' covers Massed Fleet Battles.
You know - like in Honorverse: 24 Dreadnoughts, 6 Battlecruisers & 12 Destroyers vs. 12 Battlecruisers , 50 Heavy Cruisers & 20 Corvettes kinda stuff.

You have three volumes on a shelf like this. You have discovered that a bookworm has bored a tunnel through the pages, from the first page to the last. The pages are 3 inches thick per volume. Every cover is 1/8th of an inch thick.

The question is: How long of a tunnel did the bookworm dig?

I'm pretty sure it started as an actual pen and paper game. They had a binder and tons of charts and a couple boxed sets of thge rules. that's why it's called Starfire Assistant, because it assist you in organizing the game.
They had a Space Master, who was like a dungeon master for d and d , but for this game, ad he would ocassionally itroduce random events or outside threats. I remember they had one campaign where they had some kind of big NPC decadent empire they were all bordering, sort of like a fallen empire in stellaris or something.
they had maps annd cardboard counters and charts aplenty, and they'd send each other proclamations and battle reports and stuff and it looked pretty fun, in a grognard never-touched-a-pussy sort of way (to be fair, like 2 of the 5 guys invovled were married and had kids)
yeah, here it is, this is what SASS is based off of.

Reading my post now, I see how it can look like I said the Starfire is a program. For the record: it isn't, and I'm aware of it - since I have it.
Sorry.

IMHO, the best part of it all was: Starfire started as a 12-page wargame designed to fight Mass Space Battles - and ended as a ginormous 420-page pen-and-paper 4x.

It's a nice, comfy 4x by all means - and the combat rules are (again) Mass-Battle-Scale & thus pretty sweet.
It's just that I haven't went to Economy college ...

And, in the meantime, I have Steve's Rigellian Campaign Diary to keep me company ...

After some thought, I can honestly say that Civ V with a few mods is actually not bad at all to play.
It's only real downside is being the most unstable crash-happy piece of shit I have ever seen.

Doesn't matter if the sum total of any active mods is a giant conversion that changes everything or only a single line of xml, if ANY mods are loaded it flips you a ctd every hour or so.
And I can't find what is causing it.

Kind of missing the point that it's released and "complete" software and shouldn't be doing it at all.

Also strange that I've never had a ctd with vanilla. Just a shame it's intolerably dull without mods.

It goes all loopy once that global council bullshit thing starts up.
You can persevere with loading and re-loading it, but once you get to renaissance/industrial you're re-starting the game every dozen turns or so.

I've never actually finished a game. Vanilla is too tedious, and mods wear out my patience for endlessly (re)loading things.

Late summer, 1560:
The Wokou 2nd Army under general Tsunesato marches from Nanjing into Kaifeng. Kaifeng, once a capital of the Song dynasty, has now rebelled, and the city is under siege by the Ming 2nd Southern Army. The Ming break the siege and meet the Wokou in the field before all sections of the pirate army have arrived.

The Wokou 2nd Army numbers 65 526 footmen.
The Ming 2nd Southern Army numbers 44 420 footmen and 5 328 cavalry.

General Tsunesato scores an important first victory for the Wokou, and forces General Lan Fengwei out of Kaifeng and north into Taiyuan.
General Kagezumi survived his injuries, but will not be able to retake command.

Total Wokou losses: 6 648.
Total Ming losses: 25 074

Tsunesato's 2nd Army will stay in Kaifeng to conquer it, while General Shihenaga's larger 1st army will protect Guangzhou.

>>170844565
It's fairly basic.
You move troops around, and either shoot or charge. Most of it is about correct positioning and unit usage, trying to flank the enemy or score a successful breakthrough. A melee between two units front to front can last a long time, but if you manage to get around them or otherwise outmanoeuvre them it's over fairly quickly.

>>170852879
All units are just one square, but they're formations in and of themselves. For example my Teppo and my Yumi are both 50% melee and 50% ranged, making them pretty versatile.
Numbers start mattering once a battle draws on long enough, because units will just break once they've taken enough losses. So if there'a a long slog between units of equal morale, numbers matter. But otherwise it's all about breaking down morale first and foremost.
>>
>>170855109

>I'm asking if you have formations like in Praetorians where you can tell your pikemen to adopt defensive formation.
No, you can't do that. Troops are pretty much in defensive formations by default. Units won't attack, even if right next to an enemy, until the order to charge is given.

>>170890152
>implying a bunch of autists can be relied on to decide what's a 4X or not

No, /gsg/ once included civilization and so on discussion. /gsg/ today is functionally 'autistic strategy that doesn't belong on another general' general, with occasional sperging from the R&I autist that shunts one or another game out.

>Again, IMHO.
Grand Strategy isn't equivalent to 4x that's not really what I'm saying, but 4x is a subset of grand strategy. There's no functional reason why what amounts to an additional feature makes it stop being grand strategy, grand strategy doesn't have a 'but you can't be allowed to explore' condition.
>>
>>170890285
But it's not just an additional feature - it's an entire ... motif - for a want of a better word.

In a Grand Strategy, you (the player) already 'know' (even if your game empire doesn't) where everything is - in a 4x, not even you (the player - let alone your game empire) 'know' where anything is.

Also, in a GS, all the space is (usually) already taken - there are populations (and probably other empires) already there & you start bumping elbows with your neighbours right from the start.

In a 4x - the space is empty, there are no populations, and you have to fill them in. Your neighbours are far away, and it takes time to meet them.

So, the Xpand, Xploit & Exterminate phases are different, too.
>>
>>170890746
>in grand strategy
That's the thing.
There's a specific definition of grand strategy, because unlike 4x, the term grand strategy is used outside of gaming to describe a certain tier of planning. The term grand strategy refers to the long-term strategy a nation uses to increase its own power, deal with neighbors, react to new developments, and so on. Scouting and exploration are only a part of that. Colonization / eXpanding / eXploring were fundamental parts of the grand strategy of various major European players in the age of colonialism, for example.
Tactics uses men as units to win battles, and generally spans short peroids of time and small geographic zones - battlefields.
Strategy uses armies as units to win campaigns and possibly wars. They may take years to come to fruition and often span entire frontlines.
Grand Strategy is the next step up. It uses economies, ideologies, entire national armies, and nations themselves as units to win what people might call the game of history, to end up being those who have the privilege to write about instead of being written about. It can span decades or centuries and generally concerns itself with all aspects of a nation, armed and otherwise, through war, peace, and undeclared hostilities.
In other words, any time you are able to form a Grand Strategy for your nation, you are playing a Grand Strategy game. There's technically no reason why you couldn't have an futuristic, magical, etc. GS game, nor any reason you could have a GS game that starts in 50k BC.
I think this is pretty agreeable.

grand strategy is a genre, genre's are defined by certain mechanics they all share

whatever definition you make must encompass all those shared mechanics

4X have very different mechanics from GS, they're not a subset at all, the only point of similarity is they deal with the management of nations, but in a very very different way
>>
>>170891597
>is a genre
So what exactly IS that genre? My argument is that GS is a huge grouped genre, it's not all that narrow, and it includes more specific genres.
You can say "Paradox is GS" because iirc they're the ones who explicitly call their games GS, but then why agree that TW is GS? How do you explain that civilization used to be in /gsg/?
It's like you're grabbing Stellaris, a 4x, and saying 'look it's different from Civilization that must mean that Civilization s not a 4x game'.

I gave you the actual literal definition of Grand Strategy, you're giving me a vague nebulous answer in return. List the things that GS must have and the things GS cannot have.
>>
>>170891701
Grand Strategy is not at all the same thing as grand strategy games, you are some kind of autist who cannot comprehend when words have multiple meanings

I don't play grand strategy so I can't give you a comprehensive list of features that makes a grand strategy game.

Stellaris has been called a mix of GS and 4X for a reason.

4X was included in GSG because they are just as confused as you are.
>>
>>170891834
>Grand Strategy is not at all the same thing as grand strategy games
This is like saying strategy isn't the same thing as strategy games. Of course they're not the same, but games which include strategy (or tactics, or GS) as their central tenet are strategy games.
Games which include GS as their central tenet are therefore Grand Strategy games. What exactly is the problem of this logic?

>I don't play grand strategy so I can't give you a comprehensive list of features that makes a grand strategy game.
So your argument amounts to "no you're wrong"?

>4X was included in GSG because they are just as confused as you are.
Or maybe, just fucking maybe, you're being retarded? Grand Strategy games are basically just nation building games, because Grand Strategy is essentially the strategy you use to build your nation. Any strategy game that is also a nationbuilding game is, therefore, GS. The only reason you object so strongly to including 4x under GS is because you apparently have some sort of revulsion towards GS in the first place and don't want games that you enjoy to be classified under that sweeping genre of games, when there's no actual reason why it shouldn't be. If V2 started with a fully randomized map, would it therefore cease to be grand strategy? I don't think so.
>>
>>170892006
no, my argument amounts to Grand Strategy is not grand strategy games

your argument is
>Grand Strategy games are basically just nation building games, because Grand Strategy is essentially the strategy you use to build your nation. Any strategy game that is also a nationbuilding game is, therefore, GS.

which is then wrong

you produce a definition which does not take into account the difference in mechanics whatsoever, so that is wrong

I don't give a shit about the actual definition, but you are not making a good one
>>
Jesus, even outside of their containement general, /gsg/ is shit.
>>
>>170892091
>no, my argument amounts to Grand Strategy is not grand strategy games
>which is then wrong
So Strategy has nothing to do with Strategy games, according to you. Congrats, now let us begin by redefining strategy games as a whole, above just GS. Fucking idiot. The entire fucking reason they're named GS games is because they include GS as a central tenet.

>you produce a definition which does not take into account the difference in mechanics whatsoever, so that is wrong
Mechanics aren't the important part here though. Civilization is turn based. AoE II is real time. EU III is pausable real time. They don't even work the same way time-wise, let alone the rest of their mechanics - but they're all strategy games.

>I don't give a shit about the actual definition, but you are not making a good one
My definition of GS games is that they must include the ability to create a grand strategy, which functionally means
1. war and peace are seperate, that are switched between as seen fit by the player
2. there must be more than one opponent at once, and preferably many more than one, none of whom are locked into definite teams
3. nation management must be a core part of gameplay and not merely like a minigame

These are my conditions for being GS, I think they're quite reasonable. Since you're not providing one, all you're going to do is sperg out and say NUH UH THEY'RE WRONG AND SO ARE YOU.

>>170892128
Fuck off with your boogeyman already, I'm literally arguing in the opposite direction of your memery, that GS games include way more than just /gsg/ has ever included, even 'historically'.
>>
>>170892331
>Strategy has nothing to do with Strategy games
there's lots of """"strategy"""" games with nothing resembling strategy in them yeah
>>
>>170892006
>If V2 started with a fully randomized map, would it therefore cease to be grand strategy?
Yes.
>>
>>170892432
So for you, GS must have a consistent map? Is EU IV not GS then because you can randomize the New World? What if you install that one mod that scrambles everything?

>4X (eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate

"grand strategy" games are 3X
they can even be 2X, since if you pick a superpower at game start you don't even need to expand to do well
that one mod for V2 that forced everyone to start from one province maybe came closest to being a 4X

scenarios in civ games are arguably GS, since the maps and players are fixed and borders predefined

also I see that distant worlds is still in the /gsg/ OP, when it is a 4X in every sense
>>
>>170893069
Right that's my point. Grand Strategy games only require eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate (actually, that's not enough to be GS but I've never seen a 4x game that doesn't have the other conditions I listed). The addition of eXploring is an additional constraint. Thus, while GS != 4x, GS includes 4x, because every game that has all 4 X's must also have the other 3.
Like, you don't actually have a definition for GS, which is why you're confused. You think that /gsg/ calls the shots on the genre when everyone has repeatedly noted that they're notoriously inconsistent with what is and is not 4x. Aurora was there too until the R&I autist threw a hissyfit.

I do this. I generally take the Strong trait at the beginning so initial expansion is easy. But once I've conquered a few worlds and have some aliens, I'll genetically modify them into super soldiers and spam them as clones against everyone around me.

I wish there were a mod where aliens fighting their own species sent against them by another empire induces a defensive morale penalty.

When someone stops being lazy and remakes the models. Using the originals would get you hit with a copyright infringement claim by Gearbox fags. That's what happened to the dude who put up the Systems Alliance models at first.
