Just gonna ask this aain, would love to get some input and personal advice.

I cant seem to work on anything or dev. I write down my plans, setup a schedule to dev, but I end up not doing it. I don't even fully know why. It's a weird feeling of anxiety and feeling like I wont make it anyways. Lately i've been feeling this with everything I loved doing. Be it vidya, reading, drawing, cooking.

I get short bursts of motivation of sorts and can work for days without stop. But then it feels like the magic is gone and it all comes crashing down.

Am I just being lazy? How do I stop being like this and work on something? Anyone ever felt like this and were able to pull through? I need some advice.

Also the only thing that does work to some degree is small collaborations of sorts or friendly competitions. When I feel that i'm working on something and someone DEPENDS on me doing it right, I just do it. But once the other person shows a lack of interest, it freezes up again.

Not at all, in VR it's incredibly cool and useful. Hell, even valve couldn't figure it out.
It's incredibly useful for things like inventory systems (I.E. bags of holding) and locomotion in VR since it offers a natural-seeming way to move without having to leave the playspace.

How do I stop having ideas that completely die on contact with a player? I just can't into gameplay. Nothing that I have in my head actually works once it's in front of me and tangible.

I can program. I'm okay at art. I make decent progress.

My games just suck. Help me.

>>168531585
Open the IDE. Above all else, as long as you have not become numb to seeing it sit there idling then having your IDE open should, at the very least, give you a sense of obligation. (This one is tough though because if you have been doing this then the sight of it sitting there is just background noise at this point)

Also decide on something small. Something super small and cute. Get some hot tea or coffee or hot chocolate, put on some music or podcasts or story readings and Just Like Make Game. Even completing something small will give you a huge boost in confidence and determination.

Always remember, the person depending on you is yourself. Don't let that person down, anon. They depend upon you the most out of everyone else. Sharing here also helps because you can get some interaction on your progress and feel good about doing something.

Damn, anon. It's like I'm reading my own thoughts.

I was always a guy with a lot of enthusiasm, you know? I was with full of energy, always pushing forward. I'm always way to worked up, just to meet the harsh reality that it is only I how care about the given thing this much. I slowly learned that no matter the effort, I won't reach that magical fairy land I always dreamed of. Nowadays I just want to work. I just make up these small challenges, call it game dev or writing or whatever, to have a reason to wake up. However when that drive is gone, either because the others involved seemingly lost interest or because I face a wall I can not climb, I become immobilized. I end up in a state where I can not work, but can not really relax either. Days just go by and I wonder if my life is going anywhere.

Most of the time I don't even believe what I'm doing is real. Am I really sitting in this office with these people? Damn, they talk to me about all these tasks we should do, and they really think I give a damn, while I just want to get home and work on my game.

Sorry. I feel like an ass now. I guess that helped in no way. Maybe I just wanted to let you know you are not alone. You can tell me if there's more, I'm a good listener.

Got resource generation and storage done.

A generator can make several different kinds of resources, each with their own probability of generation and total amount, there are only solar panels now but in the future you will be able to mine the environment for limited resources.
Each turn the game controller checks for all generated resources and tries to send them to the emptiest storage.

Right now the resources just teleport around but I will make so that they have to travel through transmission nodes, similar to how Creeper World does it.

I can mix and match unit types too, I can have a miner that also fires projectiles and stores its own resources for example, the goal is to let the player build their own units to deal with different situations, akin to Warzone 2100.

The resources don't do anything yet so the next step will be making it so that units require certain kinds of resources to be build and work.

Anon, how's your health? Are you eating well? Getting some exercise? Socializing every now and then, even just in multiplayer games?

A lot of what you just described sounds like depression, especially that you're losing motivation to do so many of the things you love. Remember to take care of yourself.

Like that other anon said, setting small goals and working towards that is good. And realizing that you rely on you is a good thing too.

But you gotta stay healthy. Take a shower, eat some good food, take a walk, call a friend. Remember to do the stuff that keeps you alive. Then set small goals, and go for it.

I believe in you, anon. Take care of you, and Just Like Make Game.

How would you implement something like this where you're actually able to cut away material and reform the geometry in real time?

My idea that I've currently implemented was taking a very point cloud and then removing the points that exist within the geometry of the cutting tool then writing a geometry shader to create a solid from it (if htat's even possible, never worked with geometry shaders and haven't attempted this yet). However doing it this method is extremely slow and w

Been through that. Talked to a doc, got meds. Meds helped my motivation, especially in the beginning. Progress fucken' everywhere.
Doesn't mean you'll have a constant high though. I'm still on meds, still believe they help, but I've been putting off seeking a therapist due to a bunch of other unresolved shit.
It may seem scary at first to hand yourself in like that, but it really needs to be done. And get a professional to talk to. Don't repeat my mistake.

I do go to a therapist. I've actually started seriously visiting one a couple months ago. Therapy, tons of tests. Started taking meds. I don't feel it helped me with working at all. I do feel better overall and my mind is much clear than before, but I still can't force myself to do any of the things I loved.

Maybe i'm just trying to do too much at once and should focus on smaller doses. Could it be a problem that when I do progress I do it for 8,10 sometimes 12+ hours / day? Over working and burning out? I need to start working on smaller chunks and stop worrying that I didn't finish something. Write down what needs to be finished during the next session and stop when the schedule says to stop.

Maybe that could help?

I also feel like I require someone to push me. Motivate me. Someone that comes up to me and says "hey anon, show me your progress! Also here's mine. Lets discuss how we did it", a one on one thing, but that also sounds as if i'm spoiled.

Also: watch out for burnout. It can really ruin ones life. Work less and learn to relax. Learn that there's no rush in life. Just go with the flow. You are not your achievements. femshep is there because it's an RPG and you can choose your character basically

the star trek future setting almost demands it, it's more of a reference than an sjw thing and they give you adequate tools to roleplay a good reason for a girl to be in the military

you can fuck anything that moves as manshep too, so femshep is not any more or less fetishistic than the rest of the cast

it wasn't until 3 they started with the "look at how egalitarian our game is guys" marketing shit

you can think of samus how you like, doesn't change the fact that she's just there to lecture you at the end of the game and be a sex object in her underwear

Literally only the first out of 11 games in the series portrays her that way. While you can't undo what's already been done, does that mean it's still significant? You could even consider it retconned, what with Zero Mission (which, while it led to the current Zero Suit cancer, was a subversion of the Justin Bailey outfit and instead turned it into a way to show how strong Samus is even without her suit).

karen from homeworld, I guess? but even then, I can imagine alex garden and rob cunningham going "we need a strong woman" "I'll draw her real pretty like" and that's that

Working on visuals and level design right now. Got the gun working (as in, it does damage; I still need the reticle knockback) and a placeholder reload function (it just refills ammo, gotta implement the animation system).

As a plus, the world is really starting to come together. It's fairly large in scale, which I have mixed feelings about; when you have the power slide, it feels really open and fun, but it's a little bit big for just running around.

I'm thinking that the right way to work with levels of this size is to design them large, and then populate the empty spaces with "stuff" (enemy encounters, little platforming challenges, traps, etc), which will give some life to the space and prevent these encounters from being too cramped or fatiguing... but there's always the concern that it goes the other way and becomes this Banjo-Tooiean nightmare space of Just Endless Fucking Walking.

Power slide is definitely going to be an unlockable move. It's got way too much utility in combat (command gap closer) to be available from the start.

Plus there's something satisfying about unlocking Fast.

It's a question of making sure that the worlds aren't designed "around" the ability before you have it. Granted, this world is about as big as it's going to get (there's a little bit more stuff going on the cliff face that will go just above the beach and seal the world shut, but that's it) and inside the cave to the left of the start, but this is the full space.

Takes about 35 seconds to run from the start to the furthest edge of the level... definitely shorter than the time it would take to cover, say, a Banjo Tooie map or Hyrule Field (my "avoid at all costs" models) but still probably longer than it would take to get from one end of Bob-Omb Battlefield or Treasure Trove Cove to the other.

>>168540293
Not to pile on but you better figure out how to include local multi then, because I can tell you now, an independent game with weak singleplayer content is dead on arrival for multiplayer.

Anon, AAA studios struggle with trying to build up the necessary playerbase to sustain a multiplayer title. I've literally NEVER seen an indie game pull it off successfully, except maybe once (Niddhog).

Unless that game also has strong singleplayer or local multi options to make purchasing and playing worthwhile WITHOUT online play, nobody will buy it and be available to sustain the MP.

Consider populating it with visually appealing objects like: Rocks, materials with something other than an albedo channel, more polys, etc. Currently your character looks great but quite frankly the terrain looks like it's out of an entirely different game. If you can, you should also add blended textures to your walkways to show the player walkways and to increase how visually appealing it is (make it look worn down etc)

Strong single player content? Fuck no.

What you need are bullshit skinner box mechanics. Nobody in general audiences where the money is comes back to play the same game because it's fun anymore. They want to grind the same content to unlock cosmetics or vital gameplay features.
>>
>>168541313
Yeah, decorative meshes are absolutely planned but are a much later stage of the game. I'll probably also smooth out some of the brush edges when I start doing mesh conversions, too.

Doing both path-drawing and edge textures (grass "spilling over" sheer cliff faces) is something I also intend to do, it's just a question of how... Probably vertex painting to lerp between two materials, I think that's how Banjo did it, but it needs to wait for meshing as well so I have vertices to use for it.

But decorating the level isn't my real concern, it's less about visual detail and more about gameplay detail. Banjo Tooie was a very visually busy game (and looked great) but that didn't stop it from being Just A Whole Lot of Walking.
>>
>>168541443
>What about overwatch?

Yeah what about the game made by a multimillion company with an already established fanbase with bigger production values and infrastructure to support matchmaking and dedicated servers that keeps getting visibility by the major gaming media.

Why can they get away with no SP content and not my unknown project.

Sorry to present it like this but if you want to get away with it you have to get your niche before release and start spreading word now to even have a remote chance.

Enemy AI work
>>
What do you think of daily levels that can't be retried? Like Spelunky.
>>
>>168542089
you have a few options. from easiest to hardest:
>walk towards the target in a straight line
>walk towards the player using a spring dampener system so that it maintains some momentum as the target moves
>build a path to the player using A* when it's position has changed by a threshold
>build a path to to a predefined location (cover, vantage point etc) in the level using A*, choosing the best location based on some heuristic

pick the easiest one that works for your game.

And adding to this:
What drives a player forward is anticipation.
Maybe he wants to see the next epic cutscene, the next unlockable outfit or whatever else.
You should encourage that and give the player a carrot on a stick saying "hey look if you keep playing the game you will unlock this awesome thing".

Maybe what drives the player forward is that your game is actually enjoyable and feels good to play.

Maybe actually good games have all those things as supplementary values on top of actually making the game enjoyable.

Don't get me wrong: There is value in what you're saying. But generalisations such as "anticipation for totally sweet unlocks and the level up ding is why players play games and makes them progress" lead to shitty, notfun games and miss the point entirely of the post you responded to.

The sad thing is: If TF2 were released today without any drop system, "competitive" ELO wankery or anything like that I'm pretty sure it'd be dead within a few months. I don't know if there is a market for just "play a multiplayer game for fun because it's fun and that's it" multiplayer games anymore. Should I be implementing some kind of progression system in my multiplayer game?

>Should I be implementing some kind of progression system in my multiplayer game?

Depends on what kind of game is your game. Fighting games generally lack such progression systems yet people keep playing them because no two matches are the same.

Any MOBA that isn't League also rely on this "no two matches are the same" to keep people playing, though they also add the layer of cosmetics and in the case of League clones the rune and mastery system.

Cosmetics or other similar unlockables are a good idea to keep people engaged but the main draw is to keep the game's matches from being stale.

>>168545325
I didn't imply you should sacrifice gameplay, even the best games rely a lot on anticipatory rewards.

These rewards can be anything and not just le epik level up ding, MGS3 for example lets you unlock new camos and a more abstract example can be Star Control 2, each alien race is a big box of rewards with their own graphics, personalities and music, driving the player forward to meet new ones.

Even the best game gets stale without a steady trickle of rewards, thinking that your game will be enjoyable forever is silly.
>>
>>168542061
Sometimes exploration can be rewarding itself. If you have stuff worth finding, a landscape that is visually appealing (and therefore more desirable to explore), and a satisfying control system (which you seem to have), than sometimes just walking around finding shit can be fun. I do not know too much about your game so maybe wandering around and looking for stuff isn't what you want it to be and in that case you should ignore me. I just personally really enjoy when a game gives you the freedom to just run around for the sake of it and hope you stumble upon on some good ass shit. So thats something to consider if you feel worried about it being too big. Find ways to reward the player for deciding to go snooping around the corners of a big map.

What are some good mobile game ideas?

I'm liking the idea of a strategy base-building game, but Clash of Clans and its various clones pretty much dominated that market already.

iPhone normies seem to like basic strategy and multiplayer apps so I want to make something like that. So far all I've come up with is a tower defense type game where you set up defenses, and other players have armies that try to make it through, but I feel like that's too close to CoC and I wouldn't be able to execute it properly on my own(which is how I want to stay).
My other idea involves warships out on the open ocean, with gameplay like World of Tanks, however a MMO would be way too big a project for me to take on, even for an app.
My most crazy idea that would definitely sell if the scope weren't insane is basically EVE online but for phones.

So far I can draw, model, texture, and program on a beginner-intermediate level, everything else I will learn as I go along.

I'm calling on all the idea guys in this thread to make something original that will make me rich.

Nah, what the other guy said above is right. You should always be controlling stuff via getters/setters and not directly modifying a variable. That way you can control significant changes in one place.

boss.damage(10)

public int damage(int damage) {
health -= damage;
if (health < 50) {
Event.post("Boss at half health"); //or whatever event system
}

return health;

>>
>>168551960
Your witch is a fucking slut.
>>
>>168553403
Here's the problem.

Let's say you have 10 different sources that have to lower the boss's health. You can do Boss.health -= 5 in every one of those sources. What if you want to make it so that every time the boss gets damaged, you also increase a counter that tallies, say, "total hits on boss" or something? Do you add a line to every place you're damaging the boss?

If you create a Damage function, you can put any logic around damaging the boss in one place.

Using an event system may seem super complicated at first but it actually removes a ton of complexity over time. The sooner you learn it the better. That isn't actually needed in this example though, you can just do phase2Entered = true;

I agree with this but this is completely irrelevant to the problem. He's obviously very new so you don't need to go and talk about getters and setters when right now they're not going be anything but boilerplate anyway.

If you stuff the Update/MainLoop function with shit that could have gone in an external function it will run badly. That's probably the most fundamental thing that a newbie needs to learn, beyond that they can get pretty retarded with code and things will be fine (for the most part).

Do you mean extracting functions when needed, or avoiding running things every frame if you don't need them?

It has effective templates. Just use objects as the basis from which you derive from other objects.

Effectively the same as a template.

He's not, he's using the event system that the language provides already.
That's like getting angry at someone for using a foreach loop instead of a for loop. Both do the same thing, but one is more expressive.

If the game really does need to run all of that code sequentially every frame, what's the point of even extracting functions? Leaving it all in update is a clearer representation of what the code doe.

Templates is just inheritance with more type-safetiness and less 'this is my parent'.

If you structure your approach around one way or the other, you can still wind up with solutions to the same problems without much difference in difficulty.

Aside from a couple of use cases where you've stopped game deving and have started engine deving.

The guns used to be even bigger before, but I've now tried to make them as small as possible. As said, that gun sprite is placeholder I threw together really fast.
>>
>>168556556
Yeah, well, the code isn't clear in the first place. There's magic numbers/strings and duplicated code everywhere, and he uses tons of little bits of state and timing logic scattered all over the place instead of using coroutines and/or a more structured state machine. There's also a lot of behaviour in the player that should be in other objects because it has to do with them and not the player itself.

Is there any platform that I can use to make a pocketable game system? I want to make something no bigger than a Game Boy Advance SP when its folded up (I could do a folding project) and as powerful as I can make it without sacrificing battery power. For the small games I'm working on now I keep more of a to-do list. Not super detailed, just a list of everything I know I need or want to add. If I think of anything else I add to it.

Hey everyone, still looking for a collab partner -- need a game programmer in DFW. Every other listed thing I'm looking for is just a plus.

Physics-Based Flying Vehicle Game seeking Networking and Game Programmer in DFW

>Introduction
I want to commercially release a physics-based vehicular multiplayer video game in 2018 and am looking for a partner at this time with the following core skills:
Unreal Engine 4 programming experience (C++ and BP) with physics actors, GameStates, GameModes, replication, and networking.

I currently have funds for hardware, tools, assets, legal, marketing/release and contractors, but I need a core coworker who will work for a 50% stake in profits. At the moment, I am working on the weekends and in free time after work, and expect the same for now.
I was working with a very talented partner, but unfortunately he had to focus on school and leave the project. I was focused heavily on programming, but now I want to pivot into my strong-suit, art and design (I have a marketing and design double major from a top university).
>What I have
+ A fun, functional prototype of a responsive, intuitive, and tight base pawn class in Blueprint (BP) for a physics-based flying vehicle, its PlayerController (PC), and supporting actors, structs, et cetera.
+ A $3,000 machine at your disposal (I have an identical one for myself)
----- Intel i7-6800K
----- 32 GB RAM
----- 500 GB SSD
----- 2650x1920 ASUS 25" display

+ My proficiency with Blueprints. Highlights:
----- Vector math & physics
----- Delegation between pawn and PC
----- Intricate input calculation from PC to Pawn to simplify adding control modes/devices/options
----- Consistent refactors and neatness

+ Many, many ideas for feature development and online game modes

>What I'm looking for
+ Strong Unreal Engine 4 (UE4) experience with physics actors, GameStates, GameModes, replication, server/client responsibility, networking, and multithreading.
+ Ideally, located in the DFW area or willing to relocate. This isn't an absolute must, but I think it's very, very important for collaboration that we're able to physically work together.
+ Passion and drive to actually release something that can generate a living income for us. The willingness to devote weekend after weekend to this. Focused dedication instead of lazy free time. This is the only chance for us to release a quality product in a reasonable amount of time.

>Other things that would be hugely helpful:
+ Physics and trigonometric wizardry. If you have a knack for looking at a formula for, say, critical damping and solving it for use in a function, it would add a lot to this project.
+ Other helpful UE4 experience, for example AI programming or menu BP development.

>Conclusion
Overall, I'm looking for someone who works well with me, who can dedicate many hours a week to this, and who is driven to deliver a quality product. If you are interested, please contact me at generalxenon51 (at) G mail dot com and we can get in touch.

You can buy assets or you can make them. Those are your options. You can sit here and cry about how you can't afford art, or how you don't want to spend the time to learn, but neither one will get you any closer to release.

Then why are you here?
You've already given up. You've admitted you won't even do the one thing you've allotted yourself to do because you're so bogged down by your own inabilities; yet you refuse to even attempt to work on them. More than that, you undermine the abilities of other by attributing their progress to an innate talent, ignoring any man hours or personal study they've put into the medium.
>you can be a winner at everything
Oh don't worry, I don't think you're a winner.
But like I said, I'm not even demanding that sort of standard. They're indy games, not oil paintings.
Eventually you will have to face up to the fact that many of your personal shortcomings aren't due to some innate curse, but fall entirely on your own lack of discipline.
And I'm not even American, you fuck wit.

Come again? I've stated that not everyone can do one thing, it obviously also means that some others can do it.
I've also talked about 2 years which means that I'm well aware that doing good art in that context is a long process.

>They're indy games
So what? Just because we're indies it's fine to produce mediocre games? I don't agree with that.
Sure, I can probably make some risk of rain or stardew valley tier visuals but frankly I still think that they are mediocre when you take into consideration the time it took to make both games.

I worked for like two days on a super minimal library that plays .xm files, so that I could add some software synth playback and reduce filesize of all the modules.
The 10kb one is one I found on a demoscene forum, and it uses assembly magic so I couldn't really work from that, the 15kb is my simple xm playback library, so I think I did pretty good. It only lacks support for two .xm effects that I don't use much when composing.
I'm thinking about adding softsynth support now, but I don't really know if I'm willing to give up a tracker and having to edit music by hand for a few kb.
All in all, it's been good practice.

BASS has support for many other module files, which ultimately adds size to the library.
I found a "stripped down" version of bass in a foobar plugin, and it's 97 whopping kb.
I'm trying my hardest to keep my entire game under 100k, and music is most of it. every byte counts.

If you really can't / won't use option 1 or option 2, then you either git gud or accept the fact that your game will look shitty. But keep in mind that smart art style and game design choices can make it much easier to produce acceptable quality artwork.

I don't like the combat of the souls games. They're very stiff and restrictive, plus while there are a few consumable items you can use offensively, I never liked how there's nothing in the way of sub-weapons in the 'souls games, it always boils down to attacking two to three times and then backing off to let your stamina come back or waiting for your next opportunity to attack, sure sometimes you can attack a few more times depending on your current weapon, but the weapons themselves don't go too far off the beaten path, most of that stuff is firmly grounded in reality with the exception of a few odd weapons here and there, like the one that can fire off shockwaves, or the whips, but the whips are usually garbage.

That said, the magic/miracles system in Dark Souls 1 is really, really good.

Lightbulb in your apartment is flickering. If you try to fix it, it affixes to your hand and starts shoving its way into your flesh while it burns with cursed energy.

A Yakuza bumps in to you while you're walking around in the city. You can either fight him and his thugs or pay up some of your hard earned cash (unless you're the Yakuza driver in which case you can try your luck by bitching about them being on your family's turf etc)

A lost little girl is yanked into a dark alleyway. If you choose to pursue her kidnapper, there's a chance to either find a desiccated body or you'll have to fight a child kidnapper -- who is actually a strange otherworldly and weirdly proportioned dimension hopper.

You catch a glance of yourself while you pass by a mirrored surface (store window, etc) - but something's wrong. If you decide to look back, you see yourself horribly mangled with fingers pressed against the glass. Now you have to fight your future spirit -- or else it'll take control of your body and trap you in the mirrored surface.

The sound of a rope creaking when you get home alarms you - it's coming from your bedroom. If you choose to investigate you're drawn in to hanging yourself and have to fight a battle against eyes that leer at you in the darkness. If you don't, you suffocate to death. Or you find a piece of paper which, on it, is scrawled a free clue.

How many more would you like?

Your head spins and you suddenly find yourself in the darkness - in front of you is another you, who appears to be just as confused. [Type-A]: The other you hands you an item, telling you you'll need it later - this is also a clue. [Type-B]: You're suddenly compelled to give the other you an item, telling them they'll need it later. When you snap back to reality, the item is gone and you've regained some of your mental fortitude - time has also gone backwards 20 minutes.

The world shifts at a 90 degree angle and you fight to keep your balance. In front of you is a man in a trenchcoat, veiled in darkness, all that's visible is a cigarette burning against a slimy tendril. If you give him some of your life-force, he'll give you a clue. If you refuse, either the world snaps back into place and you lose a clue or you'll awaken in the hospital's intensive care ward - having lost consciousness and hitting your head on the concrete.

Scratching at the door of your apartment is accompanied by pitiful whining/mewling/chittering. Before you know it you're at the door, filled with hope it's a childhood pet you once had. You can either stop yourself from opening the door or give in to impulse. If you don't there's a small chance there's nothing there and you shake off the compulsion - otherwise your pet's there and as you take it into your arms it fades away - but leaves a clue. If you do stop, in the morning you find tags of your long dead beloved pet sitting outside your door but the moment you see it, it vanishes. Alternatively, the apartment stalker greets you.

In your dreams you're lost in a cold stone labryinth that defies your concepts of space and time - but you eventually find its center. There, a child-you crying over an open casket. Do you look in? Yes: A fleshy, wormy, carcass with your ripped off face stretched across it. Gain a clue but lose sanity. No: There's a chance the child attacks you - accusing you of being responsible for this.

I'm a fraud anon. A FRAUD! I was enginedevving, but the artist I'm working with and I decided to go for an iso-3d with billboarded 2D look so I'm using Unity now. And I haven't drawn the assets, I'm collabing with an artist that is doing the assets. I'm doing the programming.

Shopkeeper game is the reason for the collab. We both wanted to make one. I can program, he can draw, so we teamed up. We're making a small tower defense game first to get a hold of Unity and our collab workflow, get some experience.

As for learning to draw, I'm still at it, slowly, but I'm an ABSOLUTE beginner. Pic related is about where I'm at right now drawing with references from /ic/.

How did you decided all that with your collab pal, if I may ask? I'm also collabing now, but the workflow seem to be very slow. Sometimes I think I should suggest to postpone the project, do something smaller or maybe something which interests him more so he might produce those sweet ass assets of his more. However I'm in the constant fear that he'll just leave me behind so I'm always trying to treat him like some sort of higher being, with a lot of praise and kind words. Damn, collabing is hard. Well the dude posted in an agdg thread that he was looking for a programmer and was an artist, and he wanted to make a shopkeeper game, so I jumped at it because I also wanted to do the same damn thing. Seemed like a really great coincidence.

We set up a trello and communicate regularly on discord; weekly meetings with informal updates throughout the week. We're both HIGHLY motivated, so I don't think there's any risk of one leaving the other -- we both have a dream game we want to make and we happen to share a very similar vision of what that game is. I think we just got lucky.

If you're having trouble collabing I think you're going in with the wrong attitude. It's a partnership. You have to put egos aside and think about the end goal you're trying to achieve. The artist I'm working with and I had huuuuuuuuge conversations before we started any projects about expectations, game mechanics, design, etc. And there's no fear in disagreeing, bringing up a concern, because we both have our eyes on the prize -- a really good game. I think you have to try and foster that same kind of atittude with your collab if you want it to succeed, but also if you're struggling to get participation from your collab buddy then keep in mind..you have all the source code, it's not wasted effort. You're not in constant danger of losing all your work. You gotta let go of that fear anon it'll paralyze you.

How are levels with "special rules" handled?

Like, I have a platformer. I wanna add a level where you climb up a tower, but only up. If you fall down you die. The obvious solution is right before the block of code that lets my camera scroll down I just add a if(!allowScrolling) so that the camera doesn't follow the player as he falls.

I just feel weird about that solution because now every other level, every frame has one more line of code to do that is totally useless outside a single level.

Also I have working physics in my game more or less. You can jump, fall, run, collect items. I'm about to add in some enemies. For each enemy, I was a different type of AI clearly. I'm writing the game in C though, which obviously lacks the ability for me to attach functions to structs of enemies. Would function pointers be a good way to give each enemy their own AI, or would a master "enemy AI" function where it just checks the type type of enemy and decides what to do from there be just as good? I've never used function pointers before so I don't know if trying to use them to emulate an OOP type of deal is considered good use.

Is there some way to deactivate and reactivate a line of code in whatever you're using?

In the engine I use you can deactivate groups that can contain specific rules for levels, active objects, whatever

Ah, I see. Thank you for the explanation!

Actually we also met here, he was just looking for someone to work with, and I had this prototype and asked if he's interested or would like to work on something else. He said he's okay, and even introduced many cool ideas. So maybe I'm just being impatient, or he simply lacks the time, I don't know.

I know I have the code. I'm actually happy for that, because I've put together a framework I'm really happy with, so I can move it from project to project later on, with hopefully "only" replacing the game logic inside. The reason I don't want to lose this guy is because I can not into art, yet he draws the exact same way I wish I could. I'm serious: when he grabs that bamboo pen, he makes my dreams a reality.

Sorry for the blogpost, and I wish the best of luck for both of you!

I'm thinking I just need to rework a lot of code to begin with. This is the first game I've ever done and my logic is kinda fucked up in the sense that everything is just shoved in my main game loop. I think I need to break my code into some functions and then in my loop go if(canScroll) doThisFunction else doOtherFunction

once I have it broken into functions it won't look like a giant cluster fuck of logic and then I wont be so hesitant to simply do these simply checks on the rules of the level.

It also doesn't help that I'm not using a game engine, I'm just sort of writing my own thing using C and SDL.

I'm a returning student to school and part of my engineering major requires me to take intro to C, which is insane because I have a 2 year CS degree. So instead of learning hello world again I figured I'd try something fun which is why I'm going through the trouble of writing my own shit "engine" instead of actually trying to make a game

Do it anyway, anon. Just imagine it: you are in deep shit, you can not work on this sweet ass game, you fear what your collab mate could think about you, you don't even dare to answer to him, and then suddenly he receives a mail from him. Yet this mail is not about demanding his work, but rather asking about his well being. That would be cool, wouldn't it? Even if we are talking about work here, it's nice to realize that there's a human being on the other side of the screen, sometimes only looking for some support.

So just ask him if he's okay.

To be honest, I'm only a faster worker because I know that soon I'll have less time, so I try to squeeze out as much while I can. I told him I'm ok with slow progress, because I know life can be harsh, but maybe we didn't define the meaning of slow enough. Thanks for the advice, by the way!

I'm trying to move everything to a more loosely coupled design with thorough unit tests for each thing where possible, that way going forward instead of a clusterfuck which might not even work I have small but complete modules with automated tests assuring their functionality.

that way next month when I get enough time away from my wageslave life to dev again I won't have to re-learn what I was doing and can just accept that it works and move to the next thing.

I don't know if you can get companions in your game, but:

You find a local website for a neighborhood cult looking to recruit new members. You join and are eagerly taken to initiation. You find out you were actually the sacrifice for a demon summoning. Your options could be something like:

You offer your companion instead and are blessed by the demon in a positive way

You force one of the cult members to be sacrificed, the demon kills all the members, then you fight the demon.

Sacrifice yourself(???)

A few notes:
- I don't see the game here. Don't fall into the trap that writing a game story is the same thing as writing a simple novel. A game has to blend with its story. One has to come from the other. If it's some sort of hacking game like Hack/Net, I think it's fine, but it could even be a game like Watchdogs. If you have a mechanic in mind, find a story which naturally flourishes from that mechanic. If you have a story, try to game-fy it. Like the creator of The Wittness translated his everyday troubles into puzzles. If you don't keep this in mind, you might just write that novel, or turn it into a VN.
- Characters. Have at least one. What separates good stories from bad ones are the characters. We are humans and we can only connect with other humans. This is the reason why a history lesson is a total bore: it's only story but no flesh. Yet if it gets turned into a movie, you can root for the hero, understand his motives and get involved. You have this hacking adventure, but I don't see people in it.
- Darknet. To be honest, it's not that hard to get into the so called darknet or deepweb. You just get Tor and an old version of Mozzilla. It could even be a discussion how do you define the darkweb. Basically it's a network just like the "main" Internet. This could help: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUP0tx7Ib2w However I think this part of the script is pretty well covered up, I just don't think this would be much of a shock for an experienced hacker.
- Despite what I've wrote about the lack of characters, the shy emoticon user and the stoic russian got my attention. I think they could be fun.
- You rely on many technical stuff. It's fine and I'm sure you did you research, but really make sure everything you've wrote down works like that in real life.

Thank you for sharing your script. Keep it up!

I appreciate you taking the time to read, truly. I hear what you're saying about telling a story vs story unfolding organically through gameplay. I didn't want to sound too gay by describing the gameplay like an action scene, so I mostly left it out. But its definitely going to be a more passive narrative experience that the player is pushed and pulled through. /v/ hates linearity but lots of the hacking games out there are linear, and people in general don't seem to mind it. And a lot of the dialogue will have some element of activity to it, like changing between messenger windows, or having to type the right command to join the chat channel, or clicking your "new email" notification, which now that I say it sounds like an extremely lame excuse for player agency and interaction. I'll try and have a prototype ready for DD13, the way I'm envisioning it it seems like it'd be a tight narrative-driven experience, but you never know how someone will play your thing, one time someone played my jam game literally backwards. But I get what you're pointing to.

-Characters
What would be the best way to establish characters? I have portraits for them, and they'll get names, and I was hoping general dialogue would fill in their personalities and motivations. I was planning some conflict between people on your team, like pic related wanting to turn it into a political statement about the Occupy movement, which turns off some of the other team members, and they fight about it. Actually, the one-on-one hacks where someone is guiding you through the steps, I was hoping that'd give a sense of intimacy, but I'm a turbosperg that cannot into people skills, so I have no idea what makes a character good. Maybe more "plays together/stays together" experiences.

-Darknet
Im assuming 99% of the people that play this will think of TOR the way the MSM thinks of 4chan, so I can get away with saying anything about it and they won't know any better.

2/2
I was hoping entering the darknet would be like the part of the heroes journey where they enter a new realm where the rules are all changed. I could double down on the shock factor with some of the ads, to make it feel more alien. But maybe it should have more of an initiation to it so it truly feels like you're leaving the old internet behind.

This is the shy girl, I think she will be a sacrificial character. Once the guys find out she is a girl, they hound her asking her for nude pics, or asking to date her, but simultaneously dismissing her opinions because she's a girl. So she eventually stops participating and leaves the group, which I think is a real thing for lots of girls online (inb4 SJW/GG). Of course its tempting to put in parallel storylines where you can convince her to stay, but this is supposed to be a tight one shot project, using the tools and code I have, just to get something done, and allowing for multiple storylines is just going to turn into another bogged down project.

Well, it sounds like a big scope, but I think you'll learn a lot on the way. Looking forward to that demo! I'm happy that we'll have another hacking game dev around.

What makes a character human?
>pic related wanting to turn it into a political statement about the Occupy movement
See, this is story right there. It's just moving chess pieces. What makes the reader care about this girl's actions is the "why" behind it.

Think about the villains of comic books. The usual villain who wants to conquer the world is plain boring. However if you understand his troubled backstory, you'll understand the reasoning behind his motions and motives. You'll make a connection to him. You'll realize that you are just like him, and maybe you would do the exact same things in his place. It makes you question if the guy who's supposed to be the hero is actually right or not. Realizations like that leads to catharsis.

Or think about Crime and Punishment. It's just about killing two people basically. What makes it great is that the writer lets you see what's going on inside the criminal's mind.

Either way, the way you've described how you would like to tell the story sounds good, having multiple chat tabs, checking mail etc.

Godspeed!
>>

"xi < 1" means that xi will never be 1. Your loop will do xi=-1, xi=0 then exit.

I wouldn't go down on the adjacentCount but up. I'm being picky but when it comes to logic and readability it makes more sense to count the number of neighbors rather than count the number of empty neighbors.

I agree with this.
Everything is a combination of what you are born with + the discipline to achieve something.
Everyone has to calculate for himself where it's worth it to put his energy into.

Also not trying so damn hard to achieve something specific can be a virtue. I don't say people should be lazy, but to take life as it comes.

This. Filtering retard and fag? Like why even bother posting here, at this point the community clearly isn't for you, why do people force themselves to spend time in a community they don't fit in or agree with?

I mean probably more than 25% of posts on the entire board have the word fag in it, with stuff like "buyfag", "enginefag", etc. Just seems very stupid and harmful to yourself above all else.

This, goes for filtering desu and senpai too. I have seen tons of legit devs here use it, even in progress post. Ironically, I can't recall nodevs or shitrposters doing it ever.

No, I'm not. I'm just an oldfag who's tired of all the schoolkids trying to one-up each other. Y'all can yell about anything all y'all want and I can ignore y'all all I want. That's the beauty of filters.

>>168588256
There's a difference between self-deprecating irony and childish insults/trolling. Former's fine - but it's an art that seems lost on a lot of the folks who got on the bus this late. Anyway, most folks don't get it so I just filter all of it.

I came from SA on the original goon migration. I'm as 4chan as it gets, anon.

I'm sorry anon but there really is no other way to say this. You "outgrew" 4chan if that's how you want me to put it so I don't hurt your feelings, but bottom line is this community really isn't for you anymore if you need to filter more than half the posts.

I mean just having a filter up is as "safespace" as it gets, it shows that you are incapable of overlooking any post or content you find disagreeable. You are literally getting triggered so you need them hidden beforehand.
I can understand its usage for spammers like the source guy or the like, but the moment you claim that nobody on this entire website can use "fag" or "retard" in the way _YOU_ find correct, I really think the problem is with you and not with the website. But hey, keep using the filter and ignoring serious progress posts like this >>168547108
just because you're too sensitive to keep your eyes open and don't dare to look at the shithole you want to stay in.
>>
>i hate the swamp and its kind

>get out? why would i do that when i can just stay here and complain about how shit this place is
I hate this kind of people.
>>
>>168588953
>this community really isn't for you anymore
So you're not even going to hide the fact that you admit most of the posts in here are completely stupid?

Just because it's 4chan it doesn't mean that you have to be an absolute idiot while posting, and making stupid comments ironically because le ebin meme is not funny, it's simply retarded.
>>
>>168587749

>not filtering out gogem

Casual.
>>
>>168589256
>retarded
TRIGGERED

GOD I'M SO TRIGGERED RIGHT NOW

GET OUT OF 4CHAN YOU SILLY GOOSE
>>
>>168589256
The content and therefore quality of a post is made irrelevant, because if the form includes use of the char-sequence "fag" or "retard", it's out the door. The post is denied any chance to be evaluated based on the language it's written in.

Do you ignore anything someone says in a dialect of a part of your country you are not from?
>>
>>168589256
But anon it's a god given right. Everybody knows that on 4chan you're supposed to be stupid 24/7/365 - it's the only way to be cool. When people say 'lurk more' what they really mean is 'take /b/ as the example of how you should post on every board'.

If you're not /b/ or /pol/ you're lel reddit anon. That's what all the cool kids at the playground keep telling me.
>>
Not >>168588514, but I will contribute.

There was a time when 4chan was the secret club on the internet.
People were making clever jokes and behave like retards. The fun was reading between the lines and getting it.

While we were behaving like idiots on an image board, the world became dumber and dumber.
Now the world is more stupid, more retarded, more childish than 4chan ever was.
>>
>>168589459
Maybe because you post like a redditor.
>>
Y'all are violating global rule 3 by posting off-topic. Better stop before mods wake up and ban absolutely everyone in this thread.
>>
>>168589256
>So you're not even going to hide the fact that you admit most of the posts in here are completely stupid?

No, I'm not going to hide the fact that _you_ find them stupid. And if you find them stupid there's no reason for you to be here.

>Just because it's 4chan it doesn't mean that you have to be an absolute idiot while posting, and making stupid comments ironically because le ebin meme is not funny, it's simply retarded.

What, did you just use the R word? TRIGGER WARNING, ENGAGING FILTER PROTOCOLS

So others using it is bad, but you using it is good? Do you see what I mean? This >>168587749
is okayish. A lot of those words are shitposting specific to AGDG.

But this >>168558578
should leave. If you have to filter nigger, retard and fag then you really got nothing to do here.
>>
>>168589528
No I post like a goon. Respect your elders.
Lowtax'll buy this site eventually for the laughs with his goonplatinum-stuffed bank account and we'll all be forced to come back to ATDRW to roost.
>>
>>168587962
"retard" is most often used in posts where someone is arguing but doesnt have an actual argument.
>>
>>168589553
To be honest this would be the best thing it could happen to /agdg/ then devs could move to another board/site with moderation willing to rangeban shitposters.

Yes, and the filter can pick up on that. The filter can "read between the lines" and selectively hide posts where it's used incorrectly.

You're retarded. What meaning is there between these lines?
