Just repostin' my bundle of comfy feedback for those devs who missed it (but I suspect they are not regular /agdg/ visitors, but anyway):

And again:
Thank you for the wonderful games! If you feel like your game could use another guy playing it (let it be a jam entry for a previous jam, a demo or simply a game which missed the deadline), let me know!

Why is UE4 going back to forward rendering when deferred rendering is the future?
>>
>>168593925
Forward is just going to be an option for the games that benefit from it, it isn't going to be the main one.

When using many lightsources the deferred rendering gives you much better performance.

1. Many of Yandere Simulator's systems were scripted in inefficient ways, and I lack the expertise to refactor these systems properly. At some point in the future, I will require the assistance of a more experienced programmer to re-implement many of Yandere Simulator's core mechanics. Character AI is my weakest area, and is a huge part of Yandere Simulator.

2. I am unwilling to bring another programmer onboard the project right now, because refactoring so many parts of the game would most likely take an extremely long time (I'm estimating about 6 months) and I am unwilling to allow a delay of that magnitude to happen before the game's crowdfunding campaign, because a 6-month period without any hype would drastically damage the chances of a successful crowdfunding campaign.

3. I am very grateful towards every Patron who is generously supporting me, but the Patreon donations are actually a great deal of stress for me, because I feel an overwhelming amount of pressure to avoid disappointing my Patrons. I am heavily considering downgrading Yandere Simulator from a full-time job to just a hobby, because the task of making significant progress in a timely manner is proving to be extremely stressful and detrimental to my physical and mental health.

I've seen fan arts get completely ignored before, and lewds which triggered the dev. It's like a total gamble from the artist's standpoint how will his work be perceived.

Personally I'd take any art, innocent or lewd, as an honor
if someone cares enough about something I've made to create their own art based around it, that's a huge complement

I can understand devs not responding to every single thing they get though. I wouldn't personally get offended at porn but I know people who are anti-porn who would probably dislike it out of principle
>>
>>168595129
i appreciate every piece i get, it's super rewarding to see someone else draw your stuff and i think most devs think the same
i'm sure people who get triggered by lewds only do it ironically

Ok so I need a bit of help with making a character look a bit more adult.
this is one of the MCs for my castlevania clone, her outfit is not final, I'm going to add a big fur coat that stops at her hips.
My issue is, she looks like a kid, and I want her to look a bit more ara ara~ (since she's a mom)

Any tips? I have a feeling it's mostly the head size.

why can't someone competent try and cash in on the anime fetish market so this guy gets his shit together?
>>
>>168596297
Lots of anime porn games already exist, Yandere literally only got popular because of the constant controversies the dev drums up, not because it's a good game.
>>
>>168596251
Why the fuck do these people overcomplicate things. People have been using mouse for rotation and WASD for movement for thousands of years now. Don't reinvent the wheel. You've got a mouse on pc so use it.

>>
>>168596251
the main problem I can see is you've got your y axis rotation rotating around a focal point (with the camera being a radius distance away from that focal point), yet the x rotation is local to the camera's position rather than being based on the focal point like your y rotation. It should be one or the other

As far as controls go, what other controls are there for the game? It doesn't make sense using both the left and right hands for different aspects of the camera's movement if you still have to move the character as well

Visual stuff, mostly.

I have so many surfaces going on I'm scared it will all just crash at some point. Gotta fix all memory leaks soon at some point.

Implemented rocket shells (for enemies) and added another enemy tank.

Made all tanks and bullets a bit slower to make the game less hectic at times (might have made the player's battle tank too slow to be fun, though).

Originally I made the enemies deal different amounts of damage, but I think I'll keep it at 1 damage per enemy bullet. The player, however, will have differing damage output (battle tank shells deal more damage than scout etc).

Gotta start implementing different perks (extra armor, faster reloading...) and level progression as well.

1v1:ing some tanks is actually quite chanllenging.

You seem to only have comments for the entire class, which is also a bit weird because ideally the class name should be self-explanatory.

Got enemy attacks working, and curved the animation a bit so it has more weight to it. Also got the global message system working, so I can just call one script with a list of strings and it'll pause the game and start a message loop.

Working on spriting a running attack for the enemy where, if you avoid him long enough, he raises the knife up and rushes you

I've got a weird model bug going on in Unity. My model is inside an empty gameobject, and it's origin is set to be at the feet. When the game is running, it correctly positions everything, but when its in the editor it shows the model as being below the empty gameobject for some reason. If I make it align in the editor, it ends up above the parent while playing. It also appears to mess up what counts as the transforms position as well.

I'm making a third person game with static or semi-static cameras a la prerendered background era games

would you be mad if there wasn't any mouse input on a computer game? just using WASD, arrow keys, enter, spacebar to jump, shift to run, etc?

I kind of built the control so that you could easily connect a game controller to your computer and use that, but I don't want to alienate people. my justification was that all RPGMaker games are no-mouse and those are still popular, but I'm not sure what people want or expect these days

do you mean a game like resident evil or silent hill? i think controls will be very difficult especially with wasd and for the current generation of players. even with controllers it is difficult to make controls feel okay from static cameras. when it switches between them is the worst as the player must reorient but you dont want the character to suddenly switch directions but at the same time its better to have the character move relative to the camera rather than their own orientation

>I find it so weird how he seems to be treating Yandere Simulator as if its anything other than a dumb meme game.
He's guaranteed to make millions whenever he starts a kickstarter for it. He's already received the go ahead from his fan base. They are literally begging to make him rich.

It may just be a meme game but I'm not surprised how much this went to his head and how things have ballooned out of control. Once a project is worth millions of dollars it doesn't matter how stupid it is you'll start taking it very seriously.

What I'm seeing though is Yanderedev imploding into himself because he's not getting enough attention and praise (somehow) and now he wants to be a tragic overworked artist martyr figure.

Incorrect. He utilized /v/ to gather thousands of followers before he outed himself as being Evaxephon after which /v/ hated his guts, but the followers were already hooked. Then he moved to reddit and octochan (reddit being the one that matters) and further expanded his fan base there. No controversy needed. In fact most of yanderedevs fans have no idea there is any controversy with him. About anything. They know only what he whines to them about via his youtube updates.

>What I'm seeing though is Yanderedev imploding into himself because he's not getting enough attention and praise (somehow) and now he wants to be a tragic overworked artist martyr figure.
I think you're reading too deeply into it and what's actually happening is just that the project is difficult

but then again, this is also the general that constantly cooks up weird shitposting canon about its users faking eachothers deaths and people shooting eachother irl so whatever

His feature creep (more like explosion) was incredible. Now instead of selectively yanking features he's hinting that he's just going to downgrade the entire project to a "hobby" whatever that means.

I'm starting to really believe Yandere Simulator is a stillbirth game. Something is wrong with the dev's brain.

more or less, like final fantasy games 7-10. I wanted to give it that "cinematic" feeling rather than just the "generic video game third person camera that follows you around and which you can maybe rotate with the mouse"

I can't think of a good alternative without using the mouse. if I add the mouse I'm going to have to restructure the whole input because it would be awkward to move with the mouse and then have to switch to the arrow keys to navigate the menus.

I've already got the movement aligned with the camera so the up arrow always move the character upwards on the screen.

the problem is there are only 8 directions of movement with WASD, while there are "infinite" with a controller thumbstick, so it looks kind of awkward when the character turns

Starting to look like a game, I think.

Level "progression" is now in. The missions are randomized (at the moment) and there is no logic behind enemy selection, but the system works. Once all enemies are destroyed, it goes to the next level (that is, mission numer goes up, level seed in randomized and the room is re-loaded).
If the player dies, the same mission repeats.

Also added low walls that can be fired over but not moved through (not in the Webm) and made some new mission rooms (I can literally draw rooms as sprites, no need to use GM's sucky level editor).

Not dead! Just working on level progression (and ended up having to do a little more art just so the boss fight for the first stage wasn't a box)

This is Blue, the actual boss of Verse(stage) 01. All of her special phases are flower based.

My encoding is getting a little better, I think, but could still use some work. As of right now I am wrapping up the first stage for the most part. Missing sound and no music whatsoever but stage 1 layout/fights are 90% done and stage 1 art is about at about 90% (the pink HUD can be changed if it is not your style, I am planning to make about 10 of them to pick from)

Will follow with 3 screens because my videos are still subpar.

It builds by normal attacking but decays over time. The current combo though is a multiplier at the end of stage tally. At combo 10 it changes your moth dust to not only eat bullets but also add the bullets to your score using the combo as a multiplier as well (combo caps at 15)

that testing as described doesnt even make sense in the context of motivation/laziness. motivation doesnt exist in a vacuum, you have to have a goal which you consciously decide to work towards or not.
there is nothing described about giving those rats goals or reason to make conscious decisions whether or not to exercise so those rats are not more or less motivated.
all that proves is you can breed more physically active rats and less physically active rats which seems fairly obvious given we've done that for dogs.

looks good, can see the clear cave/touhou inspiration.

few negative things stick out:
- a lot of the screen blends together, could use more contrast, darker backdrop (at least for cutscenes)
- bullets are ok, but could be brighter. i think what really hurts them is a lack of animation
- sidebars are cool, but they're so bright, they draw eyes away from the game

Thank you for the feedback! The backgrounds were (and still are) a big fear of mine. Adjusting the darkness is definitely something I will note to look into.

The bullets used to have a different glow to them which was more dynamic but I noticed I was getting slight performance issues. Animating them though might be what they need. I will have to see what I can do about that without it being too obnoxious.

I knew the HUD was going to be an issue for some so I am planning to implement about 10 different ones of varying color, saturation and design so that the player can pick what they are most comfortable with.

Thank you again for the feedback, it really means a lot! All the luck with your project, anon!

Yeah the red effect is way more noticeable in a video than it was while playtesting. I was thinking I'd do some kind of procedural blood spatter on the screen briefly depending on where you were hit from. And the focus time is based on the weapon, with weapons that have stocks being faster to shoulder and aim, and that's also upgradeable.

>>168622313
Story wise it's pretty similar to Silent Hill admittedly. Slow paced combat focused on ammo conservation and melee attacks, with exploration/puzzle based story progression.

Also, thanks! I work pretty hard on my sprites, and I'm still trying to work on getting appealing palettes for my sprites.

even in rare cases where people who actually aren't shitposting are asked the question, they'd usually choose not to answer it because the entire question is a clear sign of hostility and shitposters' readiness to fuck the other party up

Although the character is red and therefore contrasting with literally everything else on the screen, I kinda have a hard time following them.

I have a 3D game idea and I'm tempted to do it with a software rasterizer at 320x240 and PS1-ish texture quality, nearest neighbour filtering, perspective-incorrect affine texture mapping, low coordinate precision for a shimmer effect, etc.

Three reasons:
1) PS1 game graphics were crappy from an objective standpoint but were fantastic at creating atmosphere. I've recently replayed Tomb Raider 3's London levels on an accurate PS1 emulator and it had a better atmosphere than a lot of modern games. Blocky textures make your imagination fill in the gap; if you have sharp textures then things look like crap unless all the other assets in the game are also up to a very high standard.

2) It would place a fairly strict limit on model, animation, and texture complexity meaning asset production costs could be kept way down.

3) Software rast allows absolute control over presentation and it would also be very portable (albeit more power hungry on mobile devices).

Is this a reasonable approach or completely stupid?

I have to clarify that it wouldn't be post effects at all. The models and textures would genuinely be very low res, it would be rendering to a 320x240 canvas, and the variables used to store coordinates would actually be low precision.

I'm not a game dev, I don't hang out here, I don't even follow this game. These updates by him started appearing in my recommended videos and all they are is high quality bitching

Like his problems are problems but don't these videos seem excessive? Like they don't just take an hour to put together I'm sure. He uses fucking graphs and original illustrations and physics based demonstrations and animations and captures footage from games he plays.

It's on the level of like professional youtubers who explain deep lore about popular media or politics and shit.

I guess my original post is just an expression of the question:

Is this acceptable to other hobbyist game devs?

It's obvious why they banned his game- it's a creepy anime rpg about stalking, sexually harassing, taking upskirt photos of, kidnapping, torturing, and murdering schoolchildren. He is correct that there are other games with similar themes, but 1) this one is particularly bad and was attracting the wrong kind of attention and 2) they are a private corporation who can band whatever they fuck they want to ban. Going on half hour youtube rants about how it's not faaaaaair doesn't make him or his game look any better.

Whether or not it is, it's pretty unacceptable to crash the thread to whine about some dude nobody was talking about.

What you want is for us to tell you yes to validate your opinion. What you're going to get is 'fuck off' because you're not just asking us for an opinion, you're telling us what our opinion ought to be while we're (or most of us) are trying to make games here - not bitch about folks not even in /agdg/.

I have made an action rpg prototype and a metroidvania prototype (none of which posted here because I was never happy with them). I used to make choose your own adventure style text games in QBASIC as well (and would like to one day do a true visual novel with lots of meaningful choices). Some time last year (October or November I think?) an anon here said he wished someone would make a shmup with 'levels'. I responded to him saying "give me a week to put together a design document/plan of attack and I will give it a shot". He seemed pleased with this but life got in the way and I was never able to make either the document or a prototype until just over a week ago.

Unfortunately despite the effort I think that anon would be disappointed since he probably expected cool ships and Gradius style level consideration and not danmaku moth girl adventures. I am sorry, anon.

In the end just keep making things until you feel like you have something you can devote yourself to. Even if you never make those prototypes into a real game you still grew as a dev! Goodluck to you!

The time to do it was after he did a strawpoll and everyone said "yes take my money right now". What's the best way to structure multiplayer code?

At the moment I just have a check that looks like

if(isClient) {

}

in each method that checks whether the system it's running on is a client or server. Getters and setters are responsible for sending updates between the client and server whenever a variable changes. I can feel this getting out of control already. Are there any design patterns to handle this?

The server and client both do everything. The server does it for authoritative reasons and the client does it for latency/predictive reasons. The only difference is how you send/receive data. The client sends only input and blends the received data with the predicted data, and the server receives input and sends all data (not all at once, all the time, of course).

Use an engine instead.

GameMaker for 2D
Unity for 3D
UE4 for good 3D
>>
>>168643761
You have to decide how you want to work.

First of all: if you want to learn coding, so the language actually doesn't matter, then Python is a safe choice. Check out edx.org, as I know a free Python course is coming up.

However Python itself won't be useful in any way (but after the Nth language you meet the syntax won't matter that much either), so your friends are right on the part that C is more useful in the long run, but even that's not as good since no one really uses that nowadays, so with that you could just jump right into C++, C# or Java.

However if your goal is to make games, then you can start right on with an engine, and learn by making actual stuff.

Think about it: all games have some features which they all share. Every game needs a menu, most of them require physics and collision detection, not to mention tasks like loading assets and so on. An engine helps you with that, but don't believe that making a game will be easier with that. There's a lot of game logic to implement, but you are allowed more to focus solely on that.

For own engine, people usually use C++. However with C++ you'll need to use additional libraries, which helps you set up the window, handle keyboard and mouse input, but everything else must be solved by you. Said libraries could be: SDL2, SFML, maybe GLFW.

But, once again, ask yourself what you want to do. If game making is the priority, then stick with an engine. There's nothing wrong with that. Only go with engine devving if you actually enjoy tasks like implementing your own physics logic, camera following and movement, menu system etc.

Quick question /agdg/
I've been considering adding a joke item in game that has the ability to swap the genders of anyone it's used on, while not changing anything plot, story, and mostly dialog related (Save for gender specific variables)

Long story short, I'm wondering if it's too Tumblrbait, or too fetishy. Then again I might just be over analyzing it and just want other opinions on the matter

Are you aware of whatever weirdness is going on with the animation/lack thereof that ends up looking like a slide at 7 seconds in?
>>

well
>>
>>168646372
I should also note that fable 2 had prostitution, multiplayer sex, gay marriage and crossdressing

so it was entirely possible to have gay tranny sex in multiplayer

I loathe trannies and I still don't see why not. Anyone who would be bothered by that needs to check their priorities. Have fun doubling your number of [whatever format you're representing the player in], though.

I'm sure there was a time when agdg had a majority of gamedevs. That time is long gone. Nodevs wander in here throughout the year and never fucking leave once they experience the thrill of having actual programmers and artists give them (You)s for their shit opinions.

No, never, 98% shitposters, 1.5% people who think they are gamedevs because they made a square appear on the screen, 0.5% actual game developers

nope, OOP means snakeoil that only became a thing because corporate CEOs who dont know shit about programming though it was a good idea, because of the false promise of "muh code reuse"

Considering you're new, you do NOT want to create an engine. You want to use a premade engine like Gamemaker (2D), Unity, Unreal etc
>>
>>168648835
I'm really considering unity, I know trying to make our own engine would be a giant ass commitment and a lot more work than we're ready for right now, not even knowing a language.
>>
>>168649180
unreal is probably the most fully featured, if you're fine with drag and drop programming and/or poorly documented c++
>>
>>168649527
Well, I would love unreal, everything that comes out of that engine looks leagues better than games coming out of unity. The thing is, my current computer is just under the requirements listed for running it. So I'm going to have to wait for that.
