Just watched both episodes, goddamn it's good to have it back. Built some ships in spengoroos inspired by the show. Really want to get my hands on whatever game system the authors used.
It's the little things like the trails that fall down once the ship starts accelerating that really make The Expanse great.
>>167305257
>warship
>doesn't have a citadel or armor to speak of
The fuck is the point?
>>167305452
Its sci-fi.
It means done by writters, people who dosent know shit about anything than words.
>>167305452
That's how space warfare is, those cannons were meant to shoot down missiles, usually it'd attack from long range with torpedoes and never even get close to gun range. As I recall, they were sneak attacking a station with far more firepower than their own ship, so their only hope was to get in close where they could use their maneuverability.
>>167305569
>sneaking up on something
>IN SPACE
>>167305634
Obviously there's no stealth in space (there is in The Expanse, but not complete stealth), but they shut down all the power and drifted, with the ship behind them claiming a cargo pod had came loose and that they were chasing after it.
>>167305452
Both of those were also small ships so a lack of armour is given. In the show, larger vessels can take a severe beating before being destroyed, and the black one was a "stealth ship", so I would wager that it was designed to avoid direct fire rather than to take it.
>>167305906
>avoiding direct fire
>IN SPACE
>>167305713
This at least makes sense.
Realised using addressable memory for reading the punched cards 1 bit at a time is a waste of CPU and geoms. The bottleneck is just going to be the single full adder, so I can speed things up and make it more efficient by reading the card and putting it into memory all at once, and only using addressable memory to read the numbers off the register/extract the result. Any actual transfers between cards/registers can be done in bulk, with 8 bits at a time.
>>167305987
Good luck locking onto a target that doesn't appear on your sensors that is also outside of visual.
The "stealth" part of the "stealth ships" is there for a reason.
>>167305987
Direct fire from guns at least can be easily avoided given enough distance, it's missiles and shit that you need active defenses to take down. The stealth ship clearly had such defenses, those guns are point defense cannons.
>>167305257
Wouldn't the trails move in the same direction as their heads when the ship moves?
Otherwise it's magical shipboard gravity that only works when the ship is moving.
>>167306645
No, the ship has a floor plan like a skyscraper. The floor leads towards the engine, the roof leads towards the front, rather than horizontal floors you find on most sci-fi ships.
>>167306645
Nah the movie doesn't pull any hard scifi shit like artificial gravity or FTL drives or anything. The interior is oriented 90 degrees to the length of the ship, so when the main thruster fired, the force went down relative to how they were sitting.
>>167307078
Is that a cutaway view? Because the lightest flak or HE rounds are going to explode that things critical components like a blood sausage.

>>167308949
good night anon
>>167306937
That sounds okay in theory, but I imagine it would be worse off in general. Seems to me a better option would be a a tube interior where people walk on the walls, with a spin for artificial gravity and no windows to keep people from feeling sick. What does it matter if you're in a controlled spin in space when your computers can still navigate correctly?
>>167309912
It's a combat ship. If they have a huve centrifuge running, maneuvering will be more difficult due to gyroscopic precession.
>>167307078
>approximately 1 billion horsepower
>tiny laser setup
Whaaaaa?
I figured out a fairly serious Avorion bug, the one where the server fails and deletes the ship.
What happens is that, when you enter a sector, the game first saves to the player .dat the information with your current ship and the coordinates of the current sector, but it doesn't immediately save the sector itself, so it won't list your current ship as being in that sector.
Ergo, if you say that you are in that sector in said ship, but it doesn't actually exist in that sector, you have no ship.
The fix is very simple as long as you back the world up directly after the server failure and exitting the game. The information of the ship is still in player.dat, it just isn't in the sector. Once you enter the game with that mismatching data again, it will erase all data of your ship along with its turrets and systems from your player .dat since it obviously doesn't exist, and has to be an error.
If you've backed it up, then all you have to do is pop open a hex editor, find the sector with the name of your ship in "sectors" of the galaxy and edit "current_sector" in the player .dat to that coordinate. It's in signed 16bit integers.
>>167310856
I'm planning on jamming it full of particle cannon, which is also why I have the asston of batteries.
First though I have to find a way to unfuck turning, since right now it handles like a fucking sled and I want it directly overflying the target.
>>167311215
Btw are you planning to hit anything with those lasers? The effective range looks like about 10 meters
>>167312178
They're all tranceivered together into a single array, and they have not-godawful precision. They won't be boring any holes straight to the ammo, but they're not powerful enough for that anyways. They're to pick off tiny droney things and put them into the drink so the particle cannons can off them.
Speaking of which, turning issue solved and cannons installed. Can drop a Marauder to 30% in a single flyby. Now to figure out a way to unfuck the fucking naval AI or make the fucking plane AI keep its mitts off the pitch controls. LUA may be the solution, alas.
>>167313591
It's surprising they're accurate enough to be useful. The number of focusing optics looks way below the bare minimum.
>>167305987
They do at least offer a viable explanation of how the Stealth Ships actually achieve stealth, which is that they use internal radiators to basically bottle up their waste heat, and an extremely expensive outer hull coating (perhaps vantablack, the only thing humanity has produced which is blacker than Africa) which eat up radar/LAdar and from the completely black appearance of the ship I'd guess everything else on the visible spectrum as well. The ship is described in the book as releasing a huge plume of heat when dropping it's stealth.
It's not perfect, as many a space-stealth debater has pointed out a cheap network of orbiting cameras could still track such a vessel optically by simply looking for little black spots that shouldn't be there, since a stealth ship's hull may absorb all kinds of light but it still obscures the stars behind it.
Still, I appreciate the effort on the part of the authors to try as best they can to maintain plausibility while still moving their story along, at least all of the stealth techniques used are actually things a spaceship could do as opposed to bullshit "because technobabble" stealth in something like Trek.
>>167314624
I find that the detection system is so utterly fucked that hitting a small fast thing requires deliberate imprecision of a degree and a half or so because the AI fires where the target ain't.
THANKS NICK. CANNONS NOT HITTING ANYTHING TURNING WASN'T ENOUGH? YOU HAD TO MAKE SMALL FAST SINEWAVERS INVINFUCKINGBLE AGAINST PRECISE SHOTS?
>>167314864
Really? I've never encountered a flyer that couldn't be shot down easily by a decent laser. 20 squirrels aren't a problem.
webbum semi related
>>167314864
I was able to take down squirrels with unoptimized 127mm guns that fired slow as hell and were meant for realism over power, before that I used gatling cannons of about 30mm and those worked even better.
Finished the ship, looks like ass.
Game started crashing in build mode about every 5 minutes, the game doesn't like big stuff built.
I could use more shapes and the option to rotate my blocks less than 90 degree.
>>167314652
>internal radiators to basically bottle up their waste heat
Do you mean heat sinks?
You can't get rid of heat by just "radiating it inwards", which should be fairly obvious.
>>167315772
That thing is just short of a million fucking tons, if you could actually use it in-game nothing could stand against it.
>>167315920

>i already told you that ACF is bad.
Okay. What do you use for weapons, then? Don't tell me you use something like GCombat still. Or fucking trashcan cannons, since you apparently have some aversion to abstracting away anything at all.
>make the .. engine yourself
Haha, oh wow. Are you actually suggesting that a physically simulated thruster engine would be LESS server intensive than an ACF one? You're delusional, my man.
I'll give you that thruster engines are technically impressive, but they simply aren't practical for use in multiplayer.
>>167315920
I don't think they state it outright in the book but I'd presume they can only maintain stealth for so long.
>>167315980
I am using it, destroyed a fleet of 15, shields dropped to 80%.
I need more good turrets because all I have is a couple of good ones and lots of really shitty ones.
>>167316434
Is that without any shield systems fitted? That thing would be monstrous with a shield booster.
>>167316324
>they can only maintain stealth for so long
Which, again, should be fairly obvious.
If you're avoiding detection by magically not radiating heat, then the ship's interior temperature will gradually increase, eventually cooking the crew and frying electronics.
>>167316915
No there is an exotic shield booster on it, 129% bonus on shields.

>>167327573
>>167327715
That said, I just read the rest of the conversation
Constant acceleration (forwards then backwards) is good in two situations:
1. Colony ship (lots of people, lots of flat area to think about during designing, doesn't really matter how long it takes you to get somewhere)
2. You have a LOT of fuel (you're moving constantly remember)
Constant spin is better for slightly smaller designs going somewhere in less time (less people to worry about health problems over time for), especially if you make the spinning section a cylindrical shape so the precise direction of acceleration doesn't matter as much.
In very small ships just don't bother, they shouldn't be going for long-ass trips anyway.
>>167327573

>>167328128
i would say colony ships and stations would be the only situations centrifugal gravity would be viable.
beyond that, it makes much more sense to either have gravity be the direction of acceleration, or none at all
>>167327763
Depends on your settings and your pollution levels.
I personally ditch gun turrets as soon as I can, go full retard on steam power and laser my walls.
Never research bullet damage either.
After the first waves you can see where the creeps attack your wall, usually attack the same spot, concentrate your defenses there and only build sparsely everywhere else until you can make a turret wall too. Make sure to have at least 2 turrets at every point of your wall so even in the event of new waves attacking in a weak spot of your wall you can defend until you reinforce that point.

>>167337507
I'm not sure a more erratic flight pattern would save them from lazors.
They're lazors. They're instant.
Regular guns though, maybe.
>>167337992
It's due to how detection works: The target's (detected) position and velocity are averaged over a period of time to remove random error. But if the target is turning fast and hard, that'll give you a position reading somewhere INSIDE their turning curve. Which means the laser aims where they're not and misses every single time until the target stops turning. And for high-end cheeseplanes that just never happens.
The only solution is to lower the averaging time to nearly nothing, but then you need oodles of detectors which get blown off and then you're fucking blind.
>>167338286
IIrc you can adjust what you're saying in the vanilla game. You can use a longer average to detect a general flight path instead of the short term erratic movements. I can't recall exactly how to do it but I know I've seen it in a video somewhere.

>>167356648
Technically, I didn't lost.it.
It is... in some sector.
I respawned at a station I visited earlier.
Now I build a small ship with a nice deep scan range to look for it.
so in avorion all pirates come in groups? I have a not so shitty ship with many turrets and armor but I can't tackle the groups alone for more than a minute then I have to repair.
>>167358872

You can repair any time ya dumdum.
>>167360402
I spent all my resources repairing between strafing runs, now because there are a few blocks missing, I can't even fit a mining turret so I have to make the 4 jumps back to a repair station. That's what I mean by you either build form thin air or you don't, this system is shit

why can't I just add the thrusters if I have the resources though

No shit. Water is used as a coolant in fucking everything except for special cases for a reason. It's cheap and it's fucking everywhere, it has ridiculously high thermal conductivity, it has ridiculously high thermal capacity and it can be non conductive if you do it right. And guess why antifreeze is called antifreeze? It doesn't fucking freeze at water's freezing point, otherwise everyone would still be using plain water for cooling the damn thing.
Ammonia can be used, as well as liquid sodium if you've decided to erect a nuclear fucking reactor in your basement, but otherwise water. Always water.

I think Nick's on an FtD break of some sort and is focusing on trying out new things in his other game project, Forgotten Shores.
He did have a pretty tight schedule in late 2016 and got a lot of angry feedback from the resource system changes and other stuff, so maybe he can be excused for a couple of months. I just wish someone was polishing what FtD already has in the meantime.
So far FS sounds like a complete overhaul of many FtD mechanics with NPCs manning the botes or something.

Forgotten shores may be a reaction to the negative feedback from resources. Now he can test out poor decisions in the other game without disturbing the FtD players.

>>167465294
To implement our aiming/firing system in its entirety took about a day's work. Appreciably speaking, to make it feel nice, it took about an hour.
What you have there is the devs legitimately feel that is the best way to control turrets in that game.
Or they're insanely incompetent.
>>167465542
holy shit, if it took you an hour then our situation is even more dire than I thought
if they do feel like this they are invariably insanely incompetent in their own game
because right now pvp(or any other pve activity actually) is a shitfest: people surround that target block with fuckton of armour and just circle around each other while their turrets drill through these layers.
with their new "idea" it will turn into even more of a shitfest.
but well, considering pvp playerbase is relatively small I guess its not their concern

Does anyone here know anything about Osiris: new dawn?
It seems to have a more planetary feel to it with creatures and hunting and such. I hate messing with blockbuilding all the time and prefer a prebaked building system like in Subnautica.
The game seems to be rather popular, but there are SO MANY of these scifi survival sandbox games floating around.
Any infos?

My lad, you need to do some reading on optimisation, particularly for voxel games.

>>167478369
It doesn't lag at all when actually moving around. It got a lot better since the days of the demo.
It does have a tendency to crash when fucking around with thousands of tiny blocks in building mode, though, so you have to be careful with that.
>>167478469
to be fair, it was in the demo version a few months ago
so he may have pulled off fixing it, I'm just doubting it on grounds of how do you fix tens of thousands of things doing things all at once constantly changing

Windows 8 with Classic Shell is pretty similar to 7. There are definitely things I dislike about it (mainly trying to force associations with MS accounts), but it's no Windows 10.
>>167482959
Associations with MS accounts that you can just completely gut out of it. I, for one, kind of like the full screen start menu instead of the fiddly bullshit of all the previous Windows editions, even though none of the rest is anything to write home about.

>>167443913
Nevermind, I am retarded.
Redesigning from scratch. Channels in the backplate are kept the same size but the probes and gates are double size, so that they'll butt directly against eachother when in adjacent channels.
Making things fit together is a pain, especially for a prototype, so I'll be making the modules separately each controlled by their own cam so I can trigger them manually to see how it fits together.
Also rethinking use two's complement. I might just use a a dedicated subtractor circuit and simplify reading the binary.
Pic related are the rods for an 8 bit register.

Expandability, Expandability and once more Expandability.
Plan your facilities for ten hours ahead

Build it like a tree, with the roots being your input of copper and iron plates, and branching out further from there with the stuff that only requires plates being at the bottom, and stuff with the highest amount of necessary intermediate products being at the top.

Working on my own design of a full adder and subtractor instead of using one of the ones I ripped off the net. They're not as efficient geom-wise as those ones but these are mine so I like them.
If I knew how to do boolean logic it'd be a lot easier, but as it is I just got to grind through it and hope for intuitive leaps when I need them.

>>167507961
Cities don't look like that because nearly all cities were founded centuries ago, when they didn't really give a fuck about efficiency
far in the future on a colony, they'd be thinking about it and planning it before the first building is put up

How many Spengies do you think I can play on it
>>167507961
The roman did it that way, its actually pretty neat, had spot reserved across the entire city hundreds of years in advance so that projects who are inevitable if the city do survive and prosper like an aqueduct or a cultural project like an amphitheater could be built without interfering with the citizen-owned lands within it. They even had sewers systems, which require planning from start to finish.
Its sad how city planning isn't a priority anymore for the cities, only economical growth is. Can't even get a road expanded nowadays without it being a clusterfuck that take years of ''debating'' before its even looked at as a possibility, only to end up wasted as the contract is given to some incompetent buddy of the mayor who end up only patching the road here and there with a +150k$ additional fees due to problem on the construction yard (Aka guy want a new car of the year but since he don't want dirt on his name he put it on the company dole)
