/egg/ Engineering Games General - Formerly /svgg/

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

The thread is dedicated to all games about building machines and systems out of blocks, in space or otherwise. Also, all these games are ded. Only ded games may join, otherwise they must have their own thread.
Whether or not a game belongs in /egg/ is a case by case matter, however games that would belong in /svgg/, space voxel games general, are automatically considered /egg/

WebM for retards:
>gitgud.io/nixx/WebMConverter.git

List of currently known and vaguely not dead /egg/ games (this list is not fully inclusive and if you think a game might belong here, feel free to ask):
>Algodoo
>Avorion
>Besiege
>Chode - Children of Ded Earf
>Empyrion - Galactic Survival
>Factorio
>From the Depths
>Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox
>Infinifactory
>Intersteller Rift
>KOHCTPYKTOP: Engineer of the People
>Machinecraft
>REM
>Robocraft
>Robot Arena 2
>Scrap Mechanic
>SHENZEN I/O
>Space Engineers
>SpaceChem
>StarMade

Games that are definitely not /egg/:
>Minecraft
>The general that quite literally cannot be named. The Mexican scam artist one. With the shitposters. Fuck off.
>Hearthstone, found in the hearthstone general, /hsg/, not in this general.

Information about these games, such as where to get them if they're not on steam, trailers, /egg/ conquered/hosted servers, and other shit can be found in this pad:

>Eventually they will find it
Ah no, that's something you should never think when someone's playing a game.
If everything has just stopped progressing (e.g. they can't use the thing you just built) and they are under the impression that it cannot be fixed (e.g. they miss the rotate button), then they will very quickly lose interest and stop playing (i.e. there is no 'eventually').

Especially if they are stupid.

Games with elongated series like pokemon really need to add a tutorial skip function at this point.

What about the more challenge based engineering games like Besiege? Or is that the exception?
>>
>>167030180
Give 'em the most retard-friendly UI physically possible and they will still fail to find something.
Might as well have a useful interface for the less retarded audience. Idiots being idiots, they will buy it anyway.
>>
>>167030414
I fucking guarantee the kiddies playing for the first time would just hit skip so they could jump straight into getting fucking wiped out by a Rattata or some shit, get frustrated and quit, bitch to their parents and then we end up here again.
>>
So speaking of programming games using
>java
How hard would it be to convert some of them into C/C++?

Also speaking of programming, why didn't nobody make a C+ already?
Something that is 100% C compatible (C++ isn't), has all of C++ good stuff and none of the bloat/shit?
>>
>>167030563
Never tell them directly it's a skip, just ask if they've played before.
Most kids don't think past 'no I haven't/yes I have' and won't realise it's a skip function.
Kids are dumb.

Look at the games... they are pure empty sandboxes, machinecraft, besiege, they are so complex that there is no substance to use what you created asides from those challenges,
A middle ground could be FTD, or Chode, they have some stuff that is really complex and its not scripting, they have stuff to do, but the technical part is only on a few aspects, and the substance is also the half of what you could do with them.
the other side is spengos.
Even if you do a wall of scripting, you will end up WASD your shit or self operating stuff, and the substance is almost enough to have some fun doing something.
>>
>>167030920
That sounds like a good idea.
>>
>>167030443
I think Besiege would benefit from the system LogicBots (for example) does, where you can do the mission however but there are several extra objectives like budget/part limits. Currently you can just plaster your machine with sawblades or cannons, and inventiveness is completely up to you.

For the latest 'kill the mortal fools'-type mission, I just made an armoured saw thing that I call 'Lawnmower'.

Maybe to punish the fools who don't check options when they start games, have a character say 'oh by the way tutorials can be skipped using the options menu' but only after they've finished the tutorials

I'd say the middle ground is somewhere around Spengies - a sandbox for the most part, but you can/have to use and possibly adapt your creations to complete certain task, be it fighting off pirates or mining asteroids. You are free to approach that task as you see fit, as long as things get done.
Plus there are some not-sandbox elements like the aforementioned fighting action and resource management with logistics involved, which serve as a nuclei for the oversaturated creativity solution to crystallize around, for the more goal-oriented of us.

I just tried playing Empyrion after a few months break. I chose the desert starter planet since Aqua was just too easy.
On the first night, after 30 minutes of gameplay, I had THREE troop transports landing in my base (in addition to drone attacks). Chaingun troops that killed me in 2 seconds, among with like half a dozen of overseers.

Is this a fucking bug? I had absolutely no chance and literally ran out of ammo. I just had time to set up my first assembler and mine some iron, and I'm familiar with the game.

Oh and 10 seconds before an attack a meteor storm destroyed my base core, because why the fuck not.

I always thought Empyrion was too easy since the only attacks I got was like 2 drones every 15 minutes, and now suddenly I had a troop transport coming every 2 minutes right after game start. This can't be right. Couldn't even survive with save scumming.
>>
>>167035328
You chose to build your base near three troop transport spawners and faced the consequences.

Do you plan on balancing the game around mass? It seems likt it's the best way of stopping cheese, by making stuff just weight a lot. Gunbeds can't be gunbeds without stupid heavy suspensions.

>On the Mikoyan MiG-27 the GSh-6-30 had to be mounted obliquely to absorb recoil. The gun was noted for its high (often uncomfortable) vibration and extreme noise. The airframe vibration led to fatigue cracks in fuel tanks, numerous radio and avionics failures, the necessity of using runways with floodlights for night flights (as the landing lights would often be destroyed), tearing or jamming of the forward landing gear doors (leading to at least three crash landings), cracking of the reflector gunsight, an accidental jettisoning of the cockpit canopy and at least one case of the instrument panel falling off in flight. The weapons also dealt extensive collateral damage, as the sheer numbers of fragments from detonating shells was sufficient to damage aircraft flying within a 200-meter radius from the impact center, including the aircraft firing.

Mass and recoil-centric balance is the best balance. Just tweak weights until wheels can't carry heavy armor AND a tank cannon, 5+ roadwheels are needed for a heavy tank, and fitting a huge gun to a fast light aircraft becomes all but impossible.

Spengies, although it is essentially rebuilding with a blowtorch to full health at the cost of parts.
StarMad and FtD, if by broken parts you mean damaged or destroyed blocks. FtD has repair bots for that though.
Scrap Mechanic, if by broken you mean the parts that you accidentally cut off when placed new piece of the clang puzzle.
Space Station 13, if you want to repair shit broken or rendered unusable by the clown, or traitor, or an assistant, or a geneticist that discovered the hulk gene, or an angry miner with Ripley, or prankster chemist that set off a (EMP)(PAcid) grenade or melted some walls with thermite, in the hallway, or singulo, or supermatter gone nuclear, or a monkey with RCD, or a wizard, or an (atmospheric) engineer with too much free time on his hands and no TEG, pipe autism or large-scale construction to keep him busy.

So Avorion has no way to quickly transfer cargo between ships/station. If you want to put 450 processors in your station for later, you have to click 450 times. I've seen npc ships and my own station pick up upgrades that are close enough, so I'm going to try building a bowl onto the station to park in, and jettison my cargo. The cargo boxes clip through everything, so I'll have to take that into consideration.
>>
>>167050510
It does not matter. Make a blueprint of capital\base in creative, start producing it in survival and put all small blocks you salvaged. It will count towards and speed up things.
Actually whenever you have something useless, just put it into factory.
But for the love of god, don't put ammo there.

Doesn't REM already take into account recoil and stress though? And couldn't you just counter act the recoil with thrusters?

Another solution is to allow gunbeds, but introduce a countermeasure to them. Have a weapon that say, severely slows down the traverse rate of turrets or even freezes them in place, doing little damage to armor. Say maybe something like a glue bomb or thermite grenade. This way we can remove much of the effectiveness of gun beds with something like a one shot weapon.

It seems like gunbeds practicality is also limited by the reload time.
>>
>>167051280
>And couldn't you just counter act the recoil with thrusters?
Assuming the recoil doesn't just snap your shit in two, and tanks don't have thrusters.

>>
>>167051280
>Another solution is to allow gunbeds, but introduce a countermeasure to them.
Or we could just go with the first idea and make sure the physics and turret systems are well enough made to discourage gunbeds for reasons that already exist IRL. Such as requiring a fucking ridiculous suspension to support them.

>And couldn't you just counter act the recoil with thrusters?
You can counteract the overall effect of the recoil on your ship, but not the stress and pressure it puts on the structure. Eventually the recoil will tear the cannon off the ship.

>>Doesn't REM already take into account recoil and stress though?
Can confirm it does, but current recoil forces are fucked because I'm an idiot. Too many guns could theoretically destroy a soundly built ship, but this is most visible when you just staple a string of guns together. A single shot will shatter the construct. In future versions, it'll be less fucked.

>>167051280
You're forgetting you have to actually pipe ammo, coolant or whatever else a particular gun require to every individual gun. I'd be impressed if some madman actually built a robokek style gunbed in REM, ever.

>>167051769
>Or we could just go with the first idea and make sure the physics and turret systems are well enough made to discourage gunbeds for reasons that already exist IRL. Such as requiring a fucking ridiculous suspension to support them.

This anon gets it. Though, suspensions for anything are a bit of a ways off, there's going to be an upper limit on what you can practically move, tied to the ground not being able to support more than 'X' tonnes without severely limiting your movement.

Honestly I THINK gunbeds in REM wont even be physically possible, given structural integrity being a concern, but it remains to be seen or tested.

Whenever we say "resource system" that's what we mean. Not sure of the details yet, but the running idea is add as much "depth" into vessel/tank systems while still benefiting combat(to prevent meme gunbeds, etc) but not needlessly artistic. So if it can be used as a balancing factor it will probably make it in.

Yes. Driveshafts, chains, pulleys, gearboxes with adjustable gearing the works. Good shit.

>That's pretty cool, but how does piping work? Is it just from ammo storage boxes to every single gun?

Well, the idea is to make it a challenge, without making it annoying. Feed Belts from ammo boxes to the reloading mechanisms. let's also not forget the custom turrets coming soon. Also coolant pipes for the waterjacket of the guns that require such things. Smaller calibre cooler firing guns will have passive rads on the gun itself. These pipes won't have any structural integrity, unless we do some reinforced piping I guess, but they'll need to be connected to the overall loop system.

You can have as many individual loops as you want, but every additional loop controller/pump/reservoir/radiator costs more on top of the ones you already have, so redundancy is possible, but retarded redundancy is implausible.

One for the maneuvering thrusters, one for the main drive thrusters, one for the main guns, one for the resource systems such as the generator would be my go-to set up. You could run an individual loop for litterally every individual module, but that'd be a bit silly unless the craft was rather small.

Heat > Water > Pipe > Pump > Radiator > Reservoir > Controller/Distributor > Do it again.

You should be able to, on the fly, dedicate more cooling performance to a particular part of your loop if set up in such a way as to allow it, but the usefulness of that is limited to min/max builds.

This is much more thought and effort than most any game has put into heat management before, so I have no idea how this will actually function during gameplay.

Might need to be discarded, but I hope not. This is one of the crucible things we started developing REM on in the first place.

I don't know what kind of muzzle velocity you're achieving, but I'd suspect that a typical .50 BMG has more kinetic energy.
Keep in mind that the mass of a .50 BMG bullet easily goes up to 50 g.
Also, a kinetic impactor isn't what you think it is.
>>
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOWamCtnwTc
>>
>>167062865
Capital compared to the 10g round I built prior to it, and in reference to the size of ship the gun is fitted to, and in reference to it's primary use which is to kill other capital ships.

While it's true the Barnes BMG round is 52g, the Capital round has a starting muzzle velocity of 2.9km/s compared to the Barnes' 882m/s. In addition to whatever the 5g cyclonite charge imparts to the copper plate and tungsten penetrators at the moment just before impact.

I'm not saying it's anywhere near perfect or optimized, but I was impressed with it's performance considering I've only built one other similar projectile and I haven't yet optimized either.

Factorio is a lot like circuit board design in a way, you're carrying inputs to things that can process them, then those outputs to further processing or to storage.

You can see how I slowly expanded from the starting area, I didn't care about fixing anything, I just packed up the shit I needed and moved to a bigger place, then claimed another oil filed, then started solar farming, made the mega line for manufacturing modules, made red and green, then blue science lines, claim a mine here make a solar panel/accumulator factory near the main bus, claim more land for a huge steam plant for emergency power generation then just expanded the solar/accumulator field.

It becomes like this by nature, not because one wants to.

>Casings could jam other PPSs, rear MGs, engines, or anything mechanical in close vicinity
>the AoE was rectangle of 4 by 1800 feet, so even though it'd be pretty much guaranteed to hit anything in that zone, the list of potential targets was limited to train or very oblivious column
>rearming the array of leady death required dozens of workhours, since you had to fit those 6 thousands of bullets back into magazines
And what ultimately grounded the whole idea
>plane had to fly on low altitude with speed of 250mph, basically allowing enemies to shot back at with everything from AA guns to Lugers (though the efficiency could vary), which made missions extremely risky

I was playing factorio yesterday and had a thought. Most of the mechanics/interactions in the game evolve and get more complex over the course of a play through, with the notable exception of mining. Once you build the electric mining drill (which you start with the tech for) all you can do for the rest of the game when it comes to mining is build more of them. Do you guys think the game would be better with a more advanced mining option?

I was thinking they could even make a vehicle, like pic related, that would be difficult to build but could cover an entire ore deposit by itself and maybe even have an upgrade/module mechanic like the power armor. Something to increase mining speed, internal buffer capacity, or maybe even an internal smelting array.

Thoughts?

Whatever.
It'd be more interesting if a new higher tier of mining would also require supplies other than power.
Would make sense if explosives were one of these supplies, considering it's their primary civilian use, and it'd also make Factorio's oil industry somewhat more useful.

Regarding cargo in Avorion:

Stations pick up cargo dropped in a sphere around their geometric center. (Might be center of mass, not sure. It's the square bracketed icon you click to target. ) Your ship drops cargo in 4 globs, shot out straight up, down, left and right of where you're facing. Your cargo shoots out the same distance as the pickup sphere's radius, so if your ship's center isn't less than 0.01km from the station's center, some of the cargo will just float there until an npc picks it up or it despawns. For best results, put your ship's nose up to the icon then jettison. If the item is something the station needs or makes, you can get it back from the Buy/Sell list in one click, but if it's not you are going to have to click each item to get it back in your ship.

Trading cargo/personnel is not done while docked, it's done with your ship being 0.01km or less from the station's center, just like you'd do with other ships. Yes, this is stupid. If your station's dock is not at the center and you try to trade personnel/cargo while docked, it tells you you you're too far away.

I'm having an issue where while in the trade cargo menu it only lists the first 9 or 10 types of cargo, and the scrollbar doesn't work, so anything I've picked up beyond that is still there, it's just hidden from the transfer menu, and can't be transferred until stuff gets out of the way in front of it. This will probably be fixed, feels like a bug.

I made a big station to hold all my shit, but it's totally a pain in the ass to use. Just thought I'd share.

The biggest fault of Empyrion is that you can pack a fully functional endgame base into a 5x5 room with assembler, generator, storage and even a kitchen, put some thrusters on it and you will never ever need a static planet base anymore.

I always give up halfway prettying up and decorating my base when I realize that as soon as I get a carrier up I will never come back to this place anymore.

The good thing about Spengs is that you need 5+ refineries and assemblers if you want to build even a medium sized battleship before you die of old age. Which is of course prohibitively large and heavy to put on a ship, let alone the thousands of ore that turn you into a flying brick. So having a proper base of operations is a must, which adds so much to the game.

I played like half of the games that people talk about in these threads, but I never manged to find one that I really liked. There is always that little something that ruins the experience for me.

Empyrion has completely pointless bases, since it's always better to just build the same thing on a capital vessel. No point in comfy base building. Plus the space part sucks so bad, it's just a tunnel between a planet and a moon.

Space Engineers is just unstable and unoptimized as fuck. Empyrion has better planet graphics and it runs at twice the FPS of spengs. There are memory leaks, crashes, save corruption even after 4 fucking years. Plus planets are barren as fuck, there's usually a single drone base and nothing else on them. At least the space part can be kinda fun.

Factorio has boring as fuck combat. Before you get drones it's super annoying repairing all those turrets, once you have drones everything is unkillable. The AI usually doesn't attack hard enough even on the hardest settings, plus because of the shitty pathing you have hundreds of aliens stuck on the other side of the lake, taking up "attacker slots". I tried modding the game, but I never managed to get an enjoyable base defense experience.

From the Depths has some of the worst shield mechanics I've seen, just placing them is awful. The turret/cannon mechanics are super dumb, you just pack half the ship with autoloaders. Plus the endgame enemy ships are way too annoying, you can't make a comfy design since you have to cheese hard to stand a chance.

KSP gets super boring once you've been to like 2 planets. Everything is just a repeat with slightly bigger numbers. There is no objective and no reason to go any other planet since they are basically just recolors of everything you've seen.

I have no idea why I wrote this post.

I'm throwing around some ideas for an /egg/ game. The basic idea is a Besiege-like challenger with wiring, but based on modern control systems instead of the usual digital logic/programming.

First level
>Just have to keep a prebuilt Segway from hitting the ground.
>Everything built and wired up; just have to open a Simulink-style math block and put [Attitude Sensor] => [PID] => [Motor].
>It won't tip but will probably drift all over the place. You spend the next few levels making a Hailfire-like droid that compensates for recoil on its guns while shooting aliums.
>You get a 'black box' AI module that dictates where to turn, where to move, when to shoot, etc. to illustrate encapsulation. Your task is to make locomotion parts and weapons that will work fully with only the AI's outputs, kind of like Shenzhen I/O but with machines.
>You are able to make similar 'black box' parts with mechanisms+logic and reuse them on different machines.

Some more instances of not-Simulink blocks:
>[IK] block: Select two or more arm joints placed in series, plus an end effector. Takes a position in space. The IK block will try its best to place the end effector at that location. Feed it a semi-ellipse pattern to make a very efficient walker leg, or just give it the position of an alium you want to punch.
>[Neural Network] block: Has weighted connections between all inputs and outputs and some kind of optimization assistant. Notoriously ugly but versatile. Given that the IK'd walker leg has distance sensors on its foot, the NN block could figure out the best foot angle in rough terrain.
>>
>>167125025
There was literally nothing hard about the nuclear power mod.
You just had to read a guide to connect the 10 different buildings in the single possible way that the reactor works, and then have infinite power forever.

If you want to make a game litterally anyone is going to fucking play who isn't already having fun with shinzen IO, its going to have to be more interesting than

>Just have to keep a prebuilt Segway from hitting the ground.

Like, say, a walking robot or some shit that has to go and kill something or demolish something.

Instead of adding features to the game like some unique features to the planets so they aren't just a recolored empty ball they used the income from PC sales to start developing a console port. Then left it to the modders to actually make content.

A while later they started hiring some of the modders to develop for the game, but half of them quit because of insultingly low payment and shitty working conditions. Then half of the original staff quit too for the same reason.

The remaining developers put the game into a feature freeze while they fix bugs for half a year and try to make the game a bit less shitty.

>Early Access backers provided funding, but in many cases did not accurately assess the risk and in some cases were clearly not happy with the risk they had accepted.
>Imagine you have $100 to invest: do you put it in a bank account, 100% secure with an interest rate of 0.5%, or do you invest it in the stock market, where you'll either double your money in a day or lose the whole lot. When deciding on an investment it is always necessary to compare the risk with the reward. This analogy holds for Early Access, when deciding to back a game, supporters should begin by asking themselves "am I happy to give this developer this amount, given that this whole project could come to nothing?"

I know it's taboo here, but reading this paragraph made me immediately think of the schizo that used to shit all over kspg with all that rhetoric about not being liable for retarded financial decisions. It's buyers remorse cranked to 11

Some idiot general wanted a giant fuck-off cannon in the air, and every engineer involved did the absolute minimum work required to make it fly, disregarding performance IRL, because each one had another dozen or so retarded projects in "to be done yesterday" list.

Reporting again with Subterrain

I still can't decide if this game is /egg/ or not (but hey, I don't consider Factorio to be /egg/, so this one should probably be fine), but it's been pretty fun so far.

The crafting system is pretty basic and straightforward (weapons are made of 3 components, every upgrade is always better than the previous one so there is no real mixing there), but all the resource management and tech research that brings you to being able to craft things is kind of neat.

You have to constantly juggle between managing power requirements, keeping your main power source from degrading, clearing the ever increasing alien infection from various parts of the base and managing your time the most efficient way.

I would recommend it 2bh, it's a fun and challenging game, I'm not sure about the replayability value since I'm not even halfway into the story, but it's not a short game anyway.

In Avorion, what is the exact effect of having multiple barrels? Like double/triple/quad turrets?

I don't suppose they are a direct multiplier to damage since then barrel count would be the only stat that counts. What does it really do? Also, if it increases damage is that reflected in the "damage" stat or do you have to multiply manually?

its actually up in the air. some guns with several barrels ACTUALLY FIRE SEVERAL SHOTS in a single trigger pull, even though there's no shot multiplier in the damage stat. sort your inventory by damage and check out your highest multiguns, some of them are bound to fire more shots than they say they should.

i've seen a gun with three barrels that had a x2 modifier to the damage, and it fired 6 shots per trigger pull. it was pretty dank.

Still no custom guns in REM you guys. Minor changes like barrel length might be a thing, and you'll need to actually feed the damn thing with ammunition properly. Custom turrets, however, are definitely a thing. There's also nothing stopping us from making retardedly huge guns and putting them in along side the standard kit.

no system we design could contain the cheese possible with custom guns, even if we force cooling and ammo feed requirements. After a long struggle, it might just barely work, but it wouldn't be worth it.

>>167180665
Only it really isn't; as simpler shot would be easier to figure, but if it's not functioning properly I won't be getting a comparison, I'll be unduly discounting and likely discarding a shell that could have good damage potential.

Chode could really use a tester mode where you can fire a stationary gun against an armor plate and observe the damage in slow motion, which loads of details about what it's doing like how deep of a pit it made or if it fully penetrated and how much spalling it produced.
>>
>>167181085
Agreed. I'm not a rocket scientist (kek), or really much of a scientist all together. I'm barely keeping up with all the different modules and how they work and creating most things entirely based on trial and error. The only problem is I can't get consistent trials or test against some materials without creating new vehicles and finagling in the sandbox.

Something like that would be great or even a testing mode that simply runs things in slow motion and reports when things happen. Simple things, kinda like:

500kw 2.50cm Coilgun Fires; Velocity X.

[5.2 seconds] Copper Penetrator Round's Octogen Charge Detonates.
[5.2 seconds] Explosion impacts Aluminum Armor (distance 50m).
[5.3 seconds] Copper Slug impacts Aluminum Armor, penetrates fully.
-Copper Slug impacts 20 Crew Module
[5.3 seconds] Copper Penetrator Round fragments (iron) impacts Aluminum Armor, fails to penetrate.

Or some shit like that. Of course getting to watch it as it goes would be of great help too...

Not REManon, but I think slider based gun customisation will be incredibly hard to balance. An easier solution would be to make the turrets be split into different components, such as the base, motor, chamber, barrel etc. and those parts having individual stats. Then if some combination is OP, only those parts in that combination need to be changed instead of having to make adjustments to the whole system.

.38 soon.

The end goal here is to make it feel more like you're ordering from a catalogue or a store, rather than custom fabricating litterally everything. Some jerry rigging and the like might be a thing, but certainly nothing as complex as, say, creating a 114.8mm cannon with a splitting breach, or a something insane like two breaches welded together to create a double breached, single barreled monstrosity.

Its also worth noting that while we might be able to balance out one OP part by making a change to the whole system, some other part then becomes useless or overpowered as hell.

City builders don't really fit into the vague definition of 'engineering games' we use, since you don't control how the elements of the city itself work.
That said, /cbg/ itself is ded and that's one of the criteria we use. It's not like we're overloaded with games, and we only reject certain specific games because they are... unusual cases.
Anyone else have an opinion on this? City builders aren't exactly a mindblowingly popular genre, so the thread wouldn't get too flooded.

Only if it's autistic enough and it focuses on building (especially machinery) and not management. Factorio fits in, Dwarf Fortress doesn't.

>no system we design could contain the cheese possible with custom guns, even if we force cooling and ammo feed requirements.

Aside from a proper internal ballistics system with realistic constraints that is.

Anything cheezy is going to suck hard in at least one way. You're not going to get people making insane hypervelocity guns because they'd weigh a ton or their tiny saboted slug will shatter or ricochet. Anything that can push a decent projectile to dangerous kinetic energies is going to be heavy and long. Adding a slider for the length down the barrel where the gas tap goes allows further balance by forcing lower rates of fire otherwise the system gets overgassed and the recoil starts going through the roof and the gun either clangs itself to death or tears free from the mountings, or becomes uselessly heavy.

Well, sure, you have me there. If we exhaustively and realistically simulated the gun, the barrel, the propellent, projectile, the target, and the integrity of the shell (!!), that system in itself would prevent cheese inherently. Probably would be a bit laggy.

It would be kinda fun, once you got the hang of it, autism aside. Not knowing the specific composition and build of someone's gun other than "It looks big" or "it looks small."

It would also take a long ass time to develop, with returns measured in pittance. Perhaps some time after we get some cash going, we can put effort into something so relatively frivolous as to making the game look somewhat acceptable, multiplayer and ground combat. Right now we're trying to get something out the door feature complete, rather than wallowing in feature creep. Appreciably speaking, the total custom system would be similar to the current system, where you get a pre-set gun with a pre-set calibre and you can build around it, due to how the system would naturally trend to common calibres.

Perhaps allowing custom powder loads might be a thing, but certainly not right now.
>>

>>

hi muzzled, remdev here: just gonna jump in to rem future weapon implementation. One of the big things I'm going to try to do is add in "customization" in areas regarding as "intergration'. What does this mean? I would like to make the challenge in weaponry in getting everything in a turret or hull to work well together. So yes you would buy the gun off the shelf, then get an elevation axis, you need to balance the gun on that axis for the best travs speed, your gun depression/elevation it's not arbitrary, but it's limited by the fact that the breach hits the roof of the turret. So you need to raise that, now you're to tall, etc. The reloading unit will take the most space and has quite annoying geometry and constrains, like it needs to line up with the breach, and fixes to the turret in most cases(amx 50 turret is one of the exceptions) so in a standard turret the gun needs to center after every shot to line up with the reloading unit. Unless you picked the reload unit that mounts to the gun axis, which now needs a lot more space to move up and down. So your depression is like 3 Deg, the you need to get ammo to this, which will probably be BELTS, and there will be units to get ammo from grid to grid, like advanced rotors in spenges.

So as you can see, not sliders, and not just one unit solutions, it's broken up by major components which have to work together.

>>167200283
Yeah, the gravity is kinda weak. Fixing that requires the thrusters to be buffed to survive in that environment, unless you want everything to just grind on the bottom of the the sphere.
>>
>>167200418
It doesn't seem like a large problem honestly. The fact hitting the ground fucks your ship up makes hovertank combat interesting. Rather than being speedy like spessbotes, hovertanks' main engines are on the bottom to keep them afloat in heavy gravity, rather than on the back. Then all you need are a few engines on the CoM to move it forward/backward/left/right, and more lesser ones to turn and stay upright.

I feel like the only thing needed for hovertanks is a map with a flat surface, and some ground-level cover. Since hitting the floor means death, taking out tank thrusters would be like taking out their tracks. Speed would come secondary to really heavy armor to keep the tank safe from damage that could make it hit the ground and die.

Not that good of an example, destroyers don't have much of the anti-aircraft armaments I was talking about. Also, I obviously can build without my weak metal mod, but I'll have to start all over on the hull and that kills my motivation.

Making an 8 bit adder-subtractor, with punched card inputs. I've done the adder and memory so I know the theory, this is just on a larger scale.

It's going to be a lot larger than the previous 4 bit adder. 8 bits + a subtraction function needs an extra logic gate, and 4 extra bits of memory for the registers. I've decided to cut down on geoms + CPU cycles by only using one adder-subtractor instead of 8 in a row feeding into eachother.

The one full adder-subtractor will calculate one bit at a time, store the carry in a separate memory latch and offload the result to an 8 bit addressable memory register. It then cycles to the next bit position and repeats the process, inputting the stored carry from the previous operation.

I've built all of these separate mechanisms in some form or another, but I've never put them together like this before and I think space management is going to be a bitch.

A bonus is that it works a lot more slowly and with a lot more mechanical movement, since it needs to cycle once for every bit. This will help make it A E S T H E T I C

And then you realise that self-sufficiency kills Spongos sessions every time. Once you have an assembler and refinery network, which isn't big at fucking all, all you do is strip mione a few roids and then set the refineries to munch ore via inventory script and you're done.

At that point, endless components are yours, and no construction has meaning anymore.

t. totally not bitter spongos player
>>
>>167252763
>set the refineries to munch ore via inventory script
The fuck would you need a script for?
Refineries pull ore, keeping themselves nearly full at all times.
It's literally "fill container with ore, connect container and refinery, receive metals".
>>
>>167253521
I bet you also use conveyor sorters

>trust keen automated shit
You better use them, because sometimes they wont transfer your shit unless you have them.
>>
>>167253521
That's inefficient. You use an inventory management script to work through fast ore first, and set aside a refinery to focus on uranium to keep the rig powered at all times. You want to free up as much inventory space as possible, while either gaining some of all base materials (midgame) or crushing ore as quickly as possible (late game). The automatic conveyor pull not only is less performance-friendly (as it requests quite often and scans the connected grid), but an inventory management system also allows for better control over processing while reducing performance load.

Unless you literall don't give a shit and just want to let it run it's course. Then you'll end up with refineries pulling in teeny tiny amounts at the end of a batch's cycle, turning on and off over and over again.

But hey, I am sure setting reactors to active conveyors is working just fine for your arms production. :^)

That has nothing to do with optimization my dude, it does the integrated singleplayer serb thing that minecraft does, but evidently in an unstable manner right now.
You can apparently fix it by killing all processes related to avorion.

The game itself is crazy well optimized, the dev was forced to, he's running on something from before time.

>>167252763
That's not self sufficiency. If you were self sufficient you wouldn't need to go to other asteroids to mine. It would mean something like generating energy with solar panels and then using energy to synthetise metals.

It just means having a nice working base. I'm not sure what you want. If you keep building large ships, you WILL run out of iron at least.
>>
The gatling cannon is still a thing, but with flame balls. Bombs are proving to be REALLY fucking temperamental, and I'm tired of them exploding on slight movement like nitroglycerin or some shit.
Also I redid the supports, those cogs weren't gonna be tilting it any time soon.
>>

>performance-friendly
That's nice, but I've no idea exactly how big a performance drain the conveyor system is to start out with.

>crushing ore as quickly as possible (late game)
The time required to crush a given batch of ore is independent on the order in which they're processed - unless you have a fucked up priority system.

Depends on the place, and because of being overused.
There are places that are virgin territory, both with mods and its userbase.
But others have the mods warned about it, or the userbase being baited all the time, and you get caught pretty easy.
But also, all places have softspots...
Speaking of that, new ded before infest came in?
