>forcing memes
I get where you're coming from.

You just used to browse some other "meme website". There, you kept seeing these outrageously funny screencaps from 4chan, and you kept hearing about how 4chan was the birthplace of all those epic memes. At first, you were content with just admiring 4chan from a distance, from the safety of your previous meme website. But eventually, your curiositygot the better of you. You realised that you wanted to see the birthplace of memes with your own eyes. You wanted to "be there" when the next new meme was born. You wanted to be part of the massive "popular movement" involved in creating and spreading a new meme. So you came here.

Now, you spend the majority of your time on 4chan trying to force pathetic attempts at "memes". Everytime someone says something outrageous here, you see the meme potential and begin trying to force a meme about it. What you don't realise is that by coming here and desperately trying to "be there" when the next big meme is born, you destroy the community. You destroy the magic that made you interested in 4chan in the first place. You're part of the recent influx of newfags that are ruining 4chan.

Fuck off.

Inside will be a series of entries and each will have an emotion, an unknown value, a strength field, a type of thought which the emotion references, and then a field that can have a simple counter or a histfig id (or was it unit id, hmmm, pretty sure histfig) and said histfig can have emotion+thought linked with it, so you can have [FONDNESS] or [EXCITEMENT] after starting a new romance, [HORROR] or [GRIM_SATISFACTION] at seeing someone die/killing them, and so forth.

How the FUCK am I supposed to deal with keas interrupting all my dwarves in my above ground fort? I set my militia on patrol all over my base and they don't do anything when keas are near. I tell them specifically to kill a kea and they don't do anything, I've got them outfitted with crossbows/bolts and everything. The only time they get killed is when they fly into my tavern and the visitors slaughter them.
>>
>>166564158
Remove the [FLIER] tag from keas, watch them fall to the ground and explode.
>>
>>166564158
Station them near where the keas are getting lowest. If a kea is low enough to interrupt a job it's low enough for a marksdwarf to take a potshot. It'll probably miss, because marksdwarves aim for the kea is when they fire, not where it will be when the bolt gets there.
A better solution is to take your most valuable artifact, stockpile it somewhere away from your fort, and build a room around it with twisty hallways full of weapon traps. Keas are legendary appraisers and want to steal the most expensive swag they can get their grubby little claws on. They'll mass suicide to get to the shiny, and do so well away from your work areas. Kobolds will also go after it, and they're trap avoid. Put a dog in the room with the artifact to catch them. Make sure the dog can't be seen from outside the room or it'll scare keas away.
Good luck.
>>
>>166564325
That feels too cheaty. I was hoping for some ingame advice, otherwise I might as well exterminate them in dfhack. Maybe if I made a stockpile of platinum goods in a roofed area with guards stationed at the entrance/around the goods it could act as bait? Or maybe traps instead of guards? Right now I think the only way they die is because flying into the tavern forces them to be on the ground.

Absolutely. It's a mod that everyone should make everytime they download a new version. You should also do nail, claw and talon, which all also lack the ability to heal. In tissue_template.txt add [HEALING_RATE:1000] to their raw entries. That's the same as bone, but slower than soft tissues. So are we back to danger rooms being the only viable way to train your dwarves up in a reasonable amount of time? The dwarves will do individual drills/demonstrations while training, but they never spar. And yes, I am aware of the bug where the minimum number of dwarves required to execute a schedule order actually means it's the exact number of dwarves required to do it.

>>
>>166588803
That bug was fixed in 2014. Dwarves train properly now, with no scheduling tricks required. Danger rooms, however, no longer work, and are guaranteed to maim or kill your dwarves thanks to the new force translation mechanics. You just need to wait longer, unskilled dwarves aren't meant to spar. Once they've picked up some moderate amount of skill from demonstrations and individual drills, they'll begin sparring. The ease of getting an unkillable legendary militia is one of the main complaints of people who argue (correctly, in this case) that DF is too easy.

A lot of fiddling around with the settings until you get a feel for what does what which is kinda hard to explain. The big mountain ranges with the little pockets inside were from the elevation variance being in the 400/400 to 800/800 range, the ocean running down the middle happens because I've got the low/mid elevation squares at the end of advanced worldgen set to 20k each, with 10k high elevation, then turn down the rejection types (minimum forest squares/regions/minimum hill squares/etc) until you get a level that generates reliably with features you're after.

Really the best thing is to grab perfect world and play with the noise generator sliders in the various tabs and enjoy the gorgeous mathematical shit it makes.

Dwarves can shoot up or down two levels. Build guard towers that have their firing stations 1 level above your (presumably 1 block high) walls and they'll be able to shoot down at the ground but also able to hit keas much more of the time. Clear out all the trees in a wide radius around your fort (at least have no trees within 20 blocks of any of your walls) and then simply station crossbowmen in the towers. After a while they'll be legendary marksdwarves and your kea problem will mysteriously have vanished.

Just a quick tip: Don't make full addy armour for your squads, it's actually worse than steel against everything except addy. This is because its far lower mass prevents it from blocking as much blunt damage, while steel is hard enough to turn away everything with a blade except steel spears or daggers, which you will never ever have to fight in vanilla. What addy is best reserved for is mail shirts, for two reasons: 1 because chainmail is not rigid, and blocks no blunt damage anyway, so the only disadvantage to using addy over steel is removed. 2 because mail shirts have the best coverage of any item of armour while being pretty cheap, so you get the best bang for your buck.

>>166624406
Dwarven childcare. If it's your first time setting it up, there are bound to be casualties.
>>
>>166628075
Oh and to add to this, addy is best used in weapons. Addy mail is something you should make if absolutely every military dwarf is wielding an adamantine blade (axes being the best option), because those blades will slice straight through a stone demon or FB, and of course will cut as if armour just isn't there. But don't make adamantine hammers or maces. Being featherlight is a poor quality in blunt weapons.

Wooden hammers are better than adamantine ones because adamantine is not dense enough to hurt amything. It just bounces off.

So how do you picture animal people? I usually see them as a 1 or 2 on the scale.
>>
>>166645965
Human with animal head, and whatever extra features like wings for bird people
Which is basically the way game descrives them
>>
>>166642934
Well of course it does. The artifact quality is what gives it that bonus, though, not its indestructibility. In the next update there's a good chance artifacts will lose that feature anyway. The point of my post was that indestructibility != impenetrability, and that material is a much more important factor than quality. Given a choice between a no quality metal armor piece and an artifact animal product armor piece, the metal piece is the right choice every time.
>>
>>166645965
I usually picture them as they are described in game, namely as humans (with hairy/scaly/feathered bodies) with animal heads and eventual animal limbs.

When I'm in a weeb mood, I imagine them as number 1.

Funny fact: if you make your world monopolar, a smaller part of it will be freezing, meaning that the game will be more enjoyable in both modes.

For me it was a disappointment. The story was written in anticipation of the night creature release, and I was disappointed that it hyped a type of night creature that didn't even make it into the game. I really thought that we'd get those "stalkers" or whatever they were called.

Orcs aren't copyrighted, but hobbits are. Plenty of settings have orcs, but hobbits are always "halflings" because the Tolkien estate's lawyers when on a rampage in the 90s threatening lawsuits left and right.
>>
>>166680231
I'm not sure, but I think the Tolkien estate tends to be faggots about it wherever possible. I was reading the old thread on bay12 when Toady was describing what he was adding before the game was released, and hobbits were mentioned and he said he couldn't for that reason. I think it was similar for orcs. But then as other posters said the difference between orcs and goblins is ambiguous/nonexistent in Tolkein, although nowadays usually goblins are like green pointy eared underlings whereas orcs are like bigger and stronger.

>>166680758
Ah I see.
>>
>>166680889
>Difference between orcs and goblins

You're right, though the Uruk-Hai are analogous to what modern common fantasy orcs are, while Tolkien Goblins/Orcs range from hobbit-sized to man-sized, to some exceptional orcs who are much larger than men, making them kind of fall in to both the Green Midget and modern Orc archetypes, depending on their size and ferocity.
>>
>>166654403
Toady doesn't really want DnD-type magic to be the default. I'm sure he'll make it possible, but your standard world won't have wizards throwing fireballs and all that.
>>
>>166671718
That's very understandable. I guess it's because I didn't read any of the stories at that point in the update timeline, I wasn't hyping myself up for it. I listened to the DF talk about night creatures like a year after that update hit

I do that to get up out of sewers when I find one of the grates with a broken open side tunnel, but if it's a full overhang they're stuck unless they glitch teleport up like I've had zombies do after years of sitting outside never getting in through my wagons-only unusable ramps entrance.

Given how common it is for "orcs" to show up in absolutely everything, I think Toady just wanted to have goblins instead.

I think you have to have a certain amount of various types of industrial activity as well as meeting minimums of wealth, pop, exports, etc. So if, for example, you've never done anything with gems I don't think the king will ever come. I could be mistaken though.

gotta get your fortress wealth up, I got about 3 forgotten beasts trundling around in the walled off caverns below my fortress and have had a giant snake and an ettin attack along with 3 goblin armies and various werebeasts, location also has alot to do with it, but wealth and time is really all you need, as for FPS there's various things you can do to help it but eventually you just gotta accept the fact that your fortress with 100 citizens and 50 cats is going to run at a crawl
>>
>>166723782
>Does the fact that I started the world with a 5 year history and am now at 18 anything?
The young age may affect the goblin populations, but it should mean that there are more FBs and titans left alive.

However, the number of titans and FBs is largely determined by the size of your world. If you play a pocket world, there will only be like one or two titans (IIRC).

>Also why can't Toady make the game silky smooth?
The addition of the improved manager interface made the game a lot smoother. By adding a lot of perpetual "if I have x, then make y" orders, you can make your quality of life a lot better.

What is going on /dfg/ why have we been getting angrier for some weeks now?
>>
>>166728027
No one has been getting angrier, stop trying to pass that as an excuse for shitposting. In the last threads we have an autist sperging because of statues, some guy pretending to be a retard writing like he's in facebook and complaining constantly about invasions, and now some waifufag who thinks this is reddit where you go meta when moderation is shit, as if they're not always garbage.

We've had constant shitposters for ages, the boat guy and that dude with the ugly ass tileset, plus the usual crap about rimworld, masterwork and /pol/. None of these are nearly as annoying as the last ones, if you complained about it they would just make a silly shitpost and the thing died there. These faggots on the other hand, if you disagree they go completely ape shitting the entire thread up.

This isn't /dfg/ going garbage, it's just a few (or maybe one) retards shitposting for no reason at all. I won't deny it would help a lot if people simply ignored them, but don't try to pass this as us "getting angry".

While you might be right, your post isn't really helping disarming the whole thing.

It's always best to enter a general (especially a comfy general like /dfg/) with a mindset of not trying to stir up shit.
>>

/dfg/ and /rlg/ are still probably the best generals on /vg/.

>>
>>166729715
I don't know man, for me /rlg/ seems kinda intimidating. I'm just a casual when it comes to roguelikes, but I've lurked the general a few times. Almost every time, there was some newbie who got aggressively attacked simply for posting about his progress in a game, or being happy that he finally figured some boss out. According to those who attacked them, you simply shouldn't post until you get over a certain skill/experience treshold.

From my experiences, we don't really have that cutlure in /dfg/. Here, new players are ENCOURAGED to post their fuck ups.

It's actually partially possible, in that you can retire a fort, create an adventurer in that world (or even from that fortress), and then reclaim control of the fort after your adventure.

I could be wrong but I believe the bug involving caravans/wagons and nobles/merchants from other places being littered about and never leaving is still an issue, though.

So, apparently my dwarven civilization had a human king. He was born in the dwarven civilization, so he probably just identified himself as a kinda tall dwarf. Unfortunately as a human he has less than half of the average dwarven lifespan, wich led to his inevitable death by old age. Before anyone asks, no, he didn't have an epic backstory like cacame, he didn't war against his own race. He didn't kill a dragon in 2 hammerstrikes. He was just a human who liked the dwarven lifestyle and footraces (despite never having won one in his whole life.) He was just As Purenet, and we from The Hardy Merchants shall always remember him.

Is there anything you cant live without in your fort? I mean like gimmick or what not. For me its a self destruct switch. Early game I set it so I can flood my fort with the river I ussaly have a panic room were I hide my dorfs with this as well so I can dig my way back out and reclaim my fort after a quick rebuild. Later on I set the destruction to mountain collapse then finnaly lava. Sometimes I let siegers "win" simply cause I love to lock them in and watch them all slowly drown.

Toady has a deep hatred for anything with a very close relation to mathematics, such as physics. Back when toady as a mathematician, he was working on his thesis, which became widely known and eventually led to his own kidnapping. Toady was coming back from his rock fan group (rock as in stones not musical genre) when 3 people shoved him in a car and made him take drugs. He never recovered from the trauma or the drugs.

Rough floors CAN look messy you dweeb.

Toady didn't make varied ground tiles an init option accidentally. It's there on purpose so that players can decide for themselves whether they want their floors to have a consistent appearance or look like punctuation vomit.
>>
>>166818635
>consistent appearance
The problem with natural formations (like natural rock) is that they tend to look inconsistent.

If you want things to be consistent, you should bring order by smoothing.

The main reason that Toady broke the old Roguelike dogma of having a single character for every single ground tile in the game is that he wanted to encourage players to smooth the floors.

It's a fact that nature isn't consistent, though.

So you mean that if you go out into the woods and look at the rocks lying on the ground, you'll find that every single one of them has the exact same size and outward appearance?

Als, Toady's intention is implicit, but it's not my main argument, so you shouldn't obsess so much over "citations". The fact that varied ground tiles are on by default speaks for itself.

The fact that there's an option to turn varied ground tiles off speaks for itself as well. If you want to find an implicit reason, there's a simpler one that doesn't require you to make declarations about Toady's intention. Unsmoothed stone and open space look very similar underground with varied ground off. If there were varied walls and varied tree trunks and varied llamas and varied potatoes then maybe your guess about Toady's "main reason" would make sense, but literally nothing else that has a variable *appearance* in nature also has an option for a variable appearance in the game.
>>
>>166823815
All creatures have different appearances, it just isn't represented in the game graphics, mostly because they, unlike the the rest of the terrain, are represented by CP437 letters. The terrain is drawn more as a kind of ASCII art: trees and pillars use 'O' because the 'O' is how they'd look from above, and so on.
