WHY THE FUCK DOES MY MILITARY KEEP KILLING CIVILIANS ITS LIKE THE FOURTH ONE THEY HAVE KILLED SINCE I EMBARKED WHAT THE FUCK
>>
So apparently version 0.43.05 added armor and weapon damage, (according to http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=162260.0) but I can't find anything in the changelog to suggest that.

Does anyone know what they're talking about?
>>
>>166267123
If you mean the changelog on the bugtracker, it only lists bugfixes. You'll want to read the release notes in the announcements subforum. I think the change went in with 43.04, though.
>>
>>166267123
>So apparently version 0.43.05 added armor and weapon damage
It was added already in 0.43.04.

05 just fixed some bug and added 64 bit.
>>
>>166267331
>>166267410
Ah, much obliged. I haven't played since 0.42.06, how's the new version feel like?

Also, did the change to armour and weapons finally make maces viable?
>>
>>166266815
Are the dwarves attacking civilians members of the fortress guard?
If you don't have a prison or a hammerer the fortress guard may have to deal with offenders by beating the shit out of them.
>>
>>166267774
Yeah, my military are also fortress guards and the late mason violated the mayor's mandate.
Continuing to beat the shit out of him after his spine is broken is a bit much in my opinion.
>>
>>166267517
Not very different, as the small increment in version would indicate.
Maces have always been viable. They were, like most other weapons, only optimal in certain circumstances. The changes may have slightly expanded those circumstances. More by narrowing the niches of other weapons than by buffing maces, though.
>>
>>166267864
That's why you shouldn't allow trained soldiers to give beatings. An untrained law enforcer may cripple someone for life with a beating, but a trained one will almost always kill the felon.

Also, you might want to consider not ignoring the mandates. That's the root of everything.

Toady is an atheist, the only thing he believes is himself. He is the bringer of suffering and madness, a monster born from the flesh of men, the antichrist prowling the earth. In his mind, devious engines work restlessly in his machinations for the destruction and suffering of common people. Under the flag of "it's a myth simulator" he destroys what was once great, bit by bit, release by release. Dwarf fortress is as, by now, a sick man dying of cancer in a hospital bed, all by the work of Toady1. You can see his mark in the game itself, all livings beings are subject to his devilry, terrible work and living conditions, all the while waiting for inevitable doom coming from under or above the earth. Demons and beasts and gods in several forms and shapes, with a monstrous variety of abilities to support its thirst for blood. We must struggle through living hell, subjects to silly, easily fixable "issues" such as climbing, pathing FPS murder and other little devilries. Toady removed some of the best features because "they were glitched" as he says, tormenting us in an endless wait for what will never come. His purpose is clear, he is a monstrosity who takes pleasure in our pain, a psychopath hiding in an autism disguise. He has us bound by our own desires as we pay for his living expenses, and now he will do whatever he pleases with us. How can such a creature be born is beyond knowledge, he is fouler than all the beasts this game could possibly create, his bald head shines with thoughts far beyond the scope of humanity, a dark, endless pit of vile ideas. We all know it deep down, what he is and what we're doing here. We prefer to ignore reality for a little respite, but doom will come to all of us once light reveals the truth. After he has drained what little life remains, he will leave us with a broken, unfinished thing, a community that will grow and branch into thousands of groups trying to copy the skills of the devil himself. Nothing will remain.

Sure, just try waiting 2+ years and see how well you remember where all the stuff is.
We'd only need integration with LUA or any other scripting language to build the interface DF deserves, but no.
It's pointless you complain about people complaining the current interface. The truth is that you all are crying inside and the pain eventually makes you numb.

>>
>>166274092
>Sure, just try waiting 2+ years and see how well you remember where all the stuff is.
The thing is, I have no plans of abstaining from DF for that long. Since I picked it up in late 2010, I've played it pretty much every day, I have no plans on stopping.

Even if I did, I'm sure I'll remember how to play.

For fucks sake, the buttons are all permanently marked out in fort mode and everything. If you get lost, all you have to do is pause and read through the command list on the main screen.
>>
>>166273770
Toady probably won't try to make the UI better anytime soon

Maybe he will when we reach 0.75 or 1.0
>>
>>166274239
The thing is, no matter how he does it, most of it will largely be an arbitrary mess. I can't even begin to think where and how he should improve it.

I mean, there are the obvious ones, like making the keys for digging stairs consistent with the ones for building them. Plant gathering should probably be integrated into the fruit gathering interface entirely. The military screen is great, but it could stand being a bit easier to navigate.

And probably the biggest needed improvement: we need more search bars, preferably in every menu where you browse in-game items and characters.

Battles and deaths should also be searchable by character names in adv mode conversations. That's a big issue, and would save a lot of time for the players.
>>
>>166274495
The point is he shouldn't, backend developers do the worse interfaces, he just need to enable other people to do it. Eventually some idiot with enough time in his hands will come by and get it done, while Toady can keep on working on the engine adding features and fixing stuff.

>>166279027
You can make almost all dwarves carry backpacks with rations and waterskins with drinks by recruiting them into your military. Unfortunately, that 'almost' excludes miners. Due to (presumably) a bug, miners will remove all of their military uniform and equip a set of civvie clothing everytime they rotate off duty to do their actual job. Giving them picks in their uniform doesn't help; they won't use those picks to mine (and neither will anyone else), they'll have to get a different pick everytime they go off duty. This will include any rations assigned to them. To make matters worse, they'll then take those rations and leave them in their room. They will then rot and generate miasma, because they're considered owned and no dwarf will take them to a food stockpile. Even if they're left on the floor of the room no dwarf will touch them even if you order them dumped until their ownership expires, which takes longer than it takes for them to rot.
Making food stockpiles near their work areas as >>166279120 suggests is only a partial solution. They'll still need dining rooms down there or they'll travel across your whole damn fort with their food to get to one before they eat it. Sometimes they will arbitrarily choose to do that anyway, and sometimes dwarves with no business being that far from their own work areas decide to journey to the depths for a bite. On balance, though, it seems to save a little bit of travel time. To save yourself some additional headache, make appropriate furniture stockpiles near where you'll set up the dining rooms, with wheelbarrows assigned and set to accept from links only with no links. Then set them to take from anywhere after the wheelbarrows have been placed. Else you'll watch dwarves carrying furniture into the depths for a season+ at a time while other dwarves chase them around with buckets of water.
Really, though, this is just the cost of megaforts. At best anything you do will only be a palliative.

I'm going to engage with you in a fun little game of math.

Dorfs are roughly half as tall as humans.

The dorf has a 7 inch schlong.

what do you guys recommend as population cap?
the default 200 seem to just murder my fps pretty fast.
i was thinking 100/125 or something, but i know there are some stuff that only unlock at higher population.
>>
>>166299297
The only thing you need a higher cap for is getting the monarch. You'll need 140 for that, and you'll probably want to increase it to 150-160 right before their arrival so that you can get the monarch's entourage of skilled soldiers. If you don't care about getting the monarch then 125 is fine, you get everything else with a pop gate. That's where I'm capped now. I may step it up at some point.

Yeah, I like making the simple change of giving elves/humans slavery:acceptable and dwarves slavery:unthinkable, pow! War all day long.

The world in this shot also had war with goblins across much of the map with another civ, and I think there had been war with elves brewing, didn't even do any of the fortress defense nonsense of adding 50 civs, just that one slavery ethic change.

There's not a limit. If they can climb one wall the can climb 100 as long as they keep passing their climb checks. If you don't want an overhang I recommend leaving a small gap that you can defend easily (or trap all to hell if you're that kind of fella). They won't climb if they have a walkable path.

The mayor is the only noble that makes mandates that can be replaced without an untimely death, and replacing the mayor doesn't make their mandates go away. They just don't appear on your nobles screen anymore.
You can test this easily yourself by waiting for your mayor to forbid an export, enabling "culling on mandates" in the move goods to depot screen, and then replacing your mayor. You'll see that whatever export was forbidden is still not visible to be moved to the depot. Or, you can replace the export-forbidding mayor, disable culling on mandates, and trade away a bunch of the former mayor's forbidden items and watch half your fort get hauled off to jail or beaten to death.

Damn, the full effect will have to wait, I figured that it wouldn't work like I hoped but had to try anyways.

So basically I'm working on a stone age mod cause why the fuck not?

I've removed the metals and whatnot, replaced the necessary tools and weapons with stones, cut down a lot on the weapon types, no traps, no siege weapons, no crossbows, just leather and flint (added flint btw) and obsidian and blood, oh and elves still have their gay wooden arrows I'm thinking.

Still fiddling with it to make sure it all works right, and I added in SLIGHTLY less horrifying sabertooths plus wooly mammoths cause fuck it why not?

I wanted to have the dorfs in caves, figuring that maybe they would be lingering around somewhere, but nope, no luck yet so I'm just going with them using world-gen forts right now, thinking I should add weaponized native_silver/native_gold so their hammers aren't totally crap cause obsidian and flint suck for it.

Put flint in as a gemstone in sedimentary deposits, gonna have it where you can extract it from chalk (maybe just all flux, fuck it) too, and it's roughly similar to obsidian properties.

Had to give the wood armor tag to dorfs though, first time I tried and got loaded with a flint axe (yay) and a rock shield, I was scared so I dropped it and it melted into magma immediately, weee!

You should make copper useable for weapons, perhaps only for dwarves. It has a low melting point and is moldable without forges. Also it makes sense that dwarves would have the first metalworking tech.

>thinking I should add weaponized native_silver/native_gold so their hammers aren't totally crap cause obsidian and flint suck for it.

Couldn't you just use marble or granite or some other heavy stone? Gold and silver hammers would sort of clash with the overall theme.

Isn't that something DFHack allows? I never use DFHack, so I don't know. Anyway, yeah, I think it would really help to either add the trade depot search function to things like the stockpiles allow/disallow menu or just make it less disorganized. I can tell that there's some sort of organization in it, but it's so hard to figure out what it is that it takes seemingly forever to find things like kangaroo meat, or long yams when the list is organized by what RAW file they're in or something rather than being alphabetized or whatever.

protip: they go to the meeting hall because you haven't assigned them to a proper pasture. since there is no grass for them to eat down there, they starve to death.

>>
>>166380428
like the citizens, the pets also gather in the meeting areas. this is actually useful, since it means that you can deactivate their pastures during sieges, and they'll seek refuge in your fort.

if you want them to stay above ground, you have to make a pasture and then assign each grazing animal to it.
>>
>>166380428
>do the yaks know i designated this underground area of the fort as a place to gather?
Yes.

The same way fresh off the wagon migrants do. The same way goblin invaders do. The same way that Urist McFurnaceOperator knows that there's novice miner 500 tiles away in the depths of the mine that just got thirsty and needs a bucket of water fetched for him, gold nuggets be damned.
Every creature in DF has the psychic ability to know exactly where the thing they want to reach is, at all times and no matter how far away it is or how much it moves during the course of their amazing journey. Except for military dwarves with a kill order, who have to check the spot where the thing want dead was when you issued the kill order before their telepathic connection kicks in.

Im making a mod and an adventure map for /dfg/

It's gonna have lewds, drugs, inteligently designed puzzles, ankward creatures (including you)
All with custom life, made by custom sentients, and if Im dedicated enough, it will probably have a plot, although they will probably be a set of puzzles in the same world with no links between them

I've been thinking about this OC for some time, and I think Im ready to create it, with the modding skills I have obtained

>Milking friends for alcoholic drinks
>Creatures that shouldnt exist
>DF memes made alive

Its pretty ambitious, but I actually need you to show interest in it, and give certain ideas, if you want it to happen
So, depending on the feedback on this thread this will be done, or not
If people like the idea, I'll set a tripcode and numerous polls so you can decide atleast slightly what you want in this mod

How are you planning to accomplish this?

I mean, the easiest way to make something that resembles a plot with progression is probably to make a lot of entities and give them different triggers to have you encounter them at different times. That doesn't sound like what you're after, though.

They get that way naturally, from walking around and eating grass and sometimes running when they have to.

Some cattle breeds with similar traits are even basically "Too Jacked" in a steroidal looking way even more because they eat good and the trait is probably a little overzealously bred into some animals.

Can something permamently affect dwarf's personality in fortress mode?
>>
>>166386275
I toyed around with the idea that the end of a 'chapter' or level means that something happens
and the next chapter plays on it

Example
You start as a plebeian with a samsung galaxy seven, and your father is a chicken farmer
The chickens are a constant in the game, they are everywhere, and you can use them as a source for food
In the endgame of that chapter, there are two levers
A statue next to the next lever pictures a door opening(this opens the exit) and 6 thousand chickens burning
the other statue next to the othe lever pictures a grate and chickens smiling

After studying the message, you are left with a choice, escape now the puzzle and letting all of the chickens die
or going deeper in the dungeon and letting the chickens live

If you choosed the first option, all the cute chickens in the world die, and the laberinth will have chicken corpses everywhere, with statues of weeping chickens asking you ''why?''

This is a very dumb example, but thats something
The idea would be something bigger, like suggesting to the player that he and other people are trapped and that escaping the puzzle is not the main objective, but freeing them, and each chapter trying to free a different species
Anything goes for now

Start updating world, before the two weeks is up run this command:
gui/gm-editor df.global.gview.view.child

If the world updates fast enough feel free to edit the year, otherwise you want the year_tick value. Setting it to 400000 drops you right near the end of Obsidian.

>Hmmm, I've seen engravings of my character at random temples and shit, but hadn't though about the statue thing.
Engravings, yes. Those can be of anything: animals, plants, random shapes, historical events related to the site, et cetera.

Statues in worldgen sites only seem to depict random creatures. At first I assumed that the creatures must at least exist in the biome, but it soon became clear that it could be any creature, even randomised ones like bogeys and FBs.

>>
>>166410654
The way statues appear in worldgen sites is not moddable. In towns, they only appear in temples and dungeons, and like I said above, they always depict random creatures.

Your goblin story is also eginning to sound more suspicious. Why would you refer to the goblins as a "raiding party" if you were the one doing the raiding?
>>
>>166410856
risk it then
Its not horribly buggy, is just that the game doesnt have certain things in consideration, like prisioners escaping from closed cells
Doesnt always happen tho

Is it normal that outpost liason stays after the caravan leaves?
>>
>>166425291
yes, he'll usually hang out until he gets to talk to your leader, or in your meeting room (which can be appointed by a statue) and in some cases the caravan will stay if they're over weighted (for example you sell them too many statues)
>>
>>166425291

>>
>>166425291
>>166425737
Liasons have statue autism. Its a good idea to build a series of statues that are worship / sculpture garden / meeting halls incase your Liason wants to interact with a statue. If you don't have an assign leader then make one, otherwise if you do make him avaible and cancel all his task. If he's still wondering around then as i said build statues. If your Liason doesn't leave you wont get any trade.
>>
>>166425291
Build statues with different assignments, it may be a glitch. Worst case you have to restart your fort if you want trade. Or just kill the liason.

Reduced the weapon variety too, so the different races have "signature" types, was intending to do more of a rock/paper/scissors balancing but like I said that was a big disappointment having to use regular forts/hillocks.

Yes. Your trainer will decide to go train it again when its training level is near reducing. As long as it's uncaged, at least. If it's in a cage they'll wait for it to go wild again. If you plan to leave it out make sure your trainer stays unoccupied, you don't want a hydra going wild in your fort.

The long term purpose of my fort is to test out whether a dwarven civilization can ever run out of migrants to send/generate.

>>166413072
I've gotten plenty of obviously generated on the spot migrants who showed up with no history but plenty of skills. My previous fort, which was on a machine which stopped being usable, was in a world which had exactly 19 dwarves living in it before my fortress was founded. When I stopped playing on it, it had a population of somewhere around 80-100 after maybe four or five years, so most of those migrants had to have either been generated on the spot or hiding somehow. Anyway, very few of them were peasants rather than jewelers or cheese makers or whatever.

>>166432627

Probably because it's just about the only historical event which occurred in the region your fortress is in. >(Toady One) All right, so we're looking at four chunks left for this release, which'll take some time yet. We have to polish off adventure mode, which involves a lot of testing and tweaking. Today I added some more popups to the trade screen so you'd know your artifact gifts have been properly recognized and continued to fix up artifact transfer problems. There are still all sorts of strange things going on. For instance, when I returned a figurine to a lord, he stuffed it into a personal pouch where his guards couldn't see it, so some of them started interrogating me since they thought I'd hidden it and didn't actually see the hand-off. Lots of permutations to work through.

>Second of the chunks, there's fort mode! We need to handle artifact diplomacy and the sending of recovery squads off the map, which should be entertaining. Third, we need to finish the map changes I put off (e.g. kobold caves). Last, there are some random requests and promises that have accumulated (some memory address help for modders, a little bit of XML, a few priority bug fixes).
>>
>>166451757
>Fuck, this is a game abut killing GOBLINS, not discussing how statues spawn in cities.
No, this is a game about leading a dwarven fortress, and in another mode, living in the vast world generated by it, and after that you've got another mode which lets you simply read through the history of the world.
And I'll discuss the logistics of a 100% efficent cloth supply chain here whenever I damn want to.

I'd say killing goblins is simply one of smaller parts that make up the game, not what the whole game is about.

>And I'll discuss the logistics of a 100% efficent cloth supply chain here whenever I damn want to.
Not that anon, but that's not rocket science.

You simply need four permanently running looms close to the caven entrances, in which your weavers constantly produce silk cloth.

Next to them you put the clothiers' workshops. This way, you clothiers will have a ready supply of silk cloth, without the need to make binless stockpiles.

See what if I want to run a plant cloth based one?
Or yarn?
How small of a farming field, with which skill level of how many dwarves on harvesting of which plant do I need to be the most efficent with my plant cloth production, that's the matter here.

It won't. I just have to accept that DF isn't as fun as it used to be since every update removes !!FUN!!. It's a lot harder to forget to make booze when your manager does it automatically, your 3x5 farms produce enough to feed 500 dwarves, and sieges come so extremely late that they aren't a real risk. And ambushers never happen.

34.xx was the last update before world activation and the removal of the "game" part of the game where shit was scripted to happen.
>>
>>166457970
>I remember when we had a thread a day.
That happens after every major release. For example, we had it after the 0.42 release.

These periods are characterised by a net decrease in post quality. After a month or two, the general settles down again, and we get the same pace that we have now. That's usually forthe better.

Also:
>"why so hostile?"
>"ANYONE WHO DOESN*T AGREE WITH ME IS SUCKING TOADY COCK!!!!!!"
>>
>>166458112
>citing times years after the general greatly slowed down as an example
You've told me my opinion doesn't matter and it's just one guy shitposting. Whatever.
>>
>>166458270
I don't know about you, but I'm mostly a slow board kinda person.

I browse /int/ for the memes, and hobby boards like /p/ and /an/ to satisfy my personal interests. Having a slow pace is nice, because it gives you more time to actually have in-depth discussion.about a given topic. You don't have to keep up the pace in the threads to keep them alive, and you don't have to rush discussions to wrap them up before the bump limit is reached.

In more crowded boards and generals, posts that would be the seeds of interesting discussion just drown in a sea of shitposts. That's why the general sucks after every major release.

Yeah, I've been in here pretty fucking regularly for about two years now and this is a bit faster than the deadspells where the news/hint of an update are months away and slower than the bits right after a major update/the following spike when the utilities catch up, during which I've had the weird experience of missing entire threads while asleep.

The game started as a way to generate goals and stories and legends to go back and witness/take part in/share.

The quaint and comfy charm of the 2d versions are still there, the downloads didn't disappear, but the stories were limited by the geometry, and after a while it is nice to see what happens when you can dig left, or down, or up.

It's nice that instead of "whoop, demons, game over" you can deal with "whoop, demons, good luck!" and get fucked and lose or scrape by or even win, and all of those enable new and interesting stories...

You see where I'm going with this?

Next update we're getting intrigue, espionage, tangible physical prizes moving around the map, instead of sitting in your third artifact stockpile or the fifth squad you've decked out in obsessively micromanaged mooded gear.

Identifying vampires isn't always difficult anymore, but it's still a fun little surprise to notice one of the fuckers slipped in and started drinking your little bearded milkshakes.

Next update you'll have to worry about ACTUAL FUCKING SPIES, not just "oh shit, a thief snuck in and we found it" but "a thief managed to bypass our traps because that fucking asshole Olin who spent three months here fed information back to the gecko demon on the other side of the mountain and now it wants our toys!" type of shit!

The dwarf who named will be upset. Really this would have been true before it was even named. They get attached to their weapons and shields before they name them, and it's the attachment that creates the negative thought when the item is lost or destroyed. It's a lot easier to know which ones to not get rid of when they're named.

Yup, though for an existing world it has to be kinda fuckhacked in with gm-editor and a prepared saved file, and only certain changes can be done, like you can't add a verb form of a word without any, but you CAN change existing forms and I think even add entries into the lists, but I am not sure on that.

I wanted to name an artifact weapon "Punchparty" instead of "Punchfestive", a la Shelby's little brother Kent, and tried to add in a verb form of festival but ended up just changing the festive entry to party with gm-editor and saving the game with the raw ALSO changed like that, which stuck.

Okay dorf's, I have a challenge for ya'll.

First, I want you to go to this subforum on Cartographers' Guild:

For those who don't know, it's a forum where sperglords draw their own fantasy maps, both of worlds, towns and dungeons. That particular subforum is for dungeons.

Then, I want you to get a dice ready, preferably a 6 sided one.

Toss it once. The number decides which page on the subforum that you enter.

Toss it twice. The number decides which thread you open (from the top of the page).

The dungeon in the selected thread is what you build in fort mode. It doesn't have to be your entire fort (that's would be impossible for the smaller dungeons), but you have to build it in your fort.

Post results when you're done.

Why? I just thought a new challenge could be a fun way to keep the thread alive.

As a matter of fact, I find this one good enough to turn into an infographic.

I've only ever lost two fortresses in the year or so that I've been playing. The first was because I was brand new and a werelizard attacked me, infecting half my dwarves, but I was unaware that victims become timebombs that erupt into gore and murder a month later. The second and last time I lost a fortress was due to me breaking into hell and having all my legendary swordsdwarves/hammerlords heads kicked in after spider demons webbed them down. I've made countless fortresses since and I always stop playing them because everything gets so boring. It's trivial to get to the point of self sufficiency and only the odd werebeast ever attacks me. It would be nice if Toady's future updates focused more on making things difficult.
>>
>>166495446
Do it again until you get a dungeon? 99% of the topics there are people posting their dungeon maps.

Reroll if you think it will be more fun.

The challenge was mostly an open suggestion, it doesn't have any real rules. I just thought that the sheer diversity of maps produced there makes it a good source of inspiration for DF projects.

Goblin lashers with copper whips outperform goblins with iron hammers and pikes in every instance and I'm talking about fortress mode.

Having taken one, yes it has to be done by a psychologist, and yes it has significant flaws, but no, it's not completely pointless and no, education isn't going to make a particularly big difference nor is being from once place or another. I've heard claims that the average IQ in someplace or another is 70 or something, and I don't believe that's anything but propaganda, simply because it's too implausible.

>>166474669
I'm not sure what anon is trying to imply here, but I find it amusing nonetheless.

>>166477087
The best way to make the game harder is through self-imposed limitations. They can be as complicated or simple as you want. There are also some simple init file settings, worldgen settings, and mods which could make things harder, with or without self-imposed rules. However, without self-imposed rules of some sort, it'll always be possible to just seal off some part or all of your fort into a self-sustaining little bubble and if you set it up right it'll last quite a long time without you even looking at it.

>>166485143
I think the floodgate just stays in its current state. I don't recall ever removing a lever which was linked to a floodgate which was open at the time, so I'm not sure what happens in that situation, but if the floodgate is closed it'll definitely not be affected in any way by the lever going away.
