You want lower production time more than you want lower maturity time. Maturity time doesn't really matter anyway, since once it's mature, it's only production time that dictates how fast it shits out products. In fact, having slightly higher maturity time could be better, in order to keep the plant "young" longer and make mutations more effective.

It's a good method you got there. Like the other guy said, carrots are great if you want low production time. Then you can extract their development genes and purge those into other plants to get the same results.

Purge ecophysiology for lifespan and tolerance to heat and pressure. Start with tower cap or cinnamonium genes for 80 base lifespan, you don't ever really need more than that, anything more is overkill really.

Keep in mind potency (Phytochemistry) is harder to splice in other plants, because you can't splice it without also splicing the chemicals. So only splice high potency in plants with the same chemicals.

Grass has great metabolism genes, very little water needed and average nutrition consumption. You may never need to water your plants. Exotic seeds can even give you metabolism genes to remove the need for ANY water or nutrients.

To get exotic seeds rolling, just take ecology from a standard seed purge that in the exotic seeds and purge your doped up development genes in.
Be careful with the exotic plants, because some of them have special Nutrition and metabolism genes that can cause them to attack you or spew out plasma while taking out nitrogen from the atmosphere, always scan the seeds first unless that's your shit and you like having a blazing inferno or Venus as your workplace. A special development gene can also cause them to act like kudzu (splice death-nettle phytochemistry in those for extra !fun!).

Here's some fun things to play with if you ever get antag. Make a kudzu plant that produce super slippery thorny fruits that inject zombie powder. Make sure that kudzu plant is a carnivorous hematophage with the ligneous gene.

If you want to put the clown to shame, make a super high potency plant that produces lube (blue-tomatoes) and make it super squishy, so whenever someone steps on it, they slip, splat it and spread a whole shitload of lube (up to 90u per fruit). Put that in a kudzu plant for the rage of the century.

Splice bluespace tomato genes into regular fruits for teleportation fuckery, splice it with squishy genes to make teleportation grenades or landmines.

Splice the deadliest shit you can find in a regular plant and give it the thorny gene. Leave them laying around.

And for the super !fun!. Make a bio-luminescent kudzu plant that's well adapted to low pressure levels and low temperatures and splice polyacid into it. Laugh as it eats the station and can survive in space.
