I think I liked the visuals of the first three Battle Network games more than the second three. For the overworld, of course, the battle sprites were pretty much all the same, right?

I remember some anon in an earlier thread mentioned how so many series fuck up the "edgy, cool rival" like Sonic or stuff but Protoman works so well. He really is one of the coolest characters in the series (and hes my personal favourite), and Zero also works really well as that too.
Megaman just seems to get that archetype right.
Protoman's design is so fucking good too your right. You can do him a thousand and one different ways and almost all of them will end up looking cool as fuck, same with his story.

I think Protoman's maturity helps his character. He's not an edgy teenager, he's more like an adult who's left the nest. You can kind of see that in his relationship with Light.

There's a certain gravitas to Mega Man, that you can see reflected in the music and Mega Man's solemn expression. Akira Kitamura, director of 1 and 2, took note of this. The games aren't depressing, but they do have a certain atmosphere that Mario and Sonic lack. Proto Man was one of Kitamura's ideas, and I think he's a perfect character for the series because the pathos that Kitamura had in mind with the games is reflected by Proto Man and his backstory. So, it's only natural that people take to Proto Man, and tell their own story with the series like The Protomen or The Megas do, when he's such a great foil to Mega Man both visually and narratively.

I'm doing a buster-only run of MM2 at the moment. Quick Man and Heat Man were pretty challenging stages as a result, but I had already done a run before where I didn't use Item 2 or Time Stopper so I wasn't completely lost.
