It has some nice ideas. You'll probably semi enjoy it if you have read the book. It has stupidly ridiculous adaptations of the book like the "voice".

Even then I honestly believe Lynch would make a good adaptation with all the experience he has gained, at least co-directing the most spiritual segments.

I think it's time we acknowledge that Twin Peaks is one of the dullest franchises in the history of TV franchises. Seriously each episode following the FBI agent and his pals from the Twin Peaks Sheriff Department as they fight assorted Lodge spirits has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects, all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Lynch vetoed the idea of giving Michael J. Anderson a pay raise; he made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody, just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for his movies. The Twin Peaks series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-X Files in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

The writing is dreadful; the show was terrible. As I watched, I noticed that every time Agent Cooper drank some coffee, the character said instead that the coffee was "damn fine."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Lynch's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that he has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Twin Peaks by the same AV Club. They wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are watching Twin Peaks at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to browse Reddit." And they were quite right. They were not being ironic. When you watch "Twin Peaks" you are, in fact, trained to browse Reddit.

The movie has some nice scenes but it is mostly a mess. Dune by and large is a boring movie, despite having some good special effects and great actors. The main character is so boring and lifeless.

While it is kinda weird, the movie mostly drags along with no real momentum.

I never watched the "extended edition". Or rather, I tried, but it it opened up with 15 minutes of straight expository monologue with still images, and that's where I gave up. I doubt the rest of the film would have been better.

I know I will say something heretical to sci-fi fans on this board, but I thought Dune as a book was pretty meh/boring to begin with. it has a really strong first 1/3rd, but then the main character is able to see everything into the future and all sense of tension and narrative are thrown out the window.

I can only speak for myself, but I share the same sentiment as that anon, but not to feel more patrician or to feel smarter than anybody, because at least so far there's nothing that is particularly intellectually challenging about season 3.

I just think the show would have been a failure had it not been divisive. I think when it originally came out, it was obviously met with mass appeal but it was also this abrasive show that people couldn't make heads or tails of, so ratings were dropping, and fast. The show was popular, but it wasn't sitting comfortably with its audience.

Had season 3 rolled around and been a slick modern television show that anybody can band behind, then how is that really good? It wouldn't be doing what the show did in the 90s, what it ultimately became accepted as and celebrated for. Doing that same trick again, while being would have been welcomed by a lot of people in the short term, but it would never have a chance at actually achieving anything that the original hadn't.

This is maybe going to be a rocky season, that already has its flaws. But it sure feels like something that is unique and is memorable in its own right. That is why it is so exciting.

I agree in many respects. I think the attitude that every decision that Lynch has made this season should be put on a pedestal is pretty silly. It's like we forgot that Inland Empire and Dune exist. The man makes mistakes, with or without studio meddling.

Looking at those ratings though, makes me think the show was really a victim of having one of the best pilots ever. Having an opening episode that good just made it so much easier for people to be upset when easy answers weren't forthcoming.
