Cloverfield lane was previously called Valencia which was previously called the Cellar.

Originally it was a psychological thriller completely unrelated to Cloverfield that got reworked during production.

One anon in the original thread started typing random addresses to do with all of the previous names and landed on thecellarmovie.com which is part of an ARG.

Theory with no probable basis in reality: Cloverfield's connected to Pacific Rim connected to 2014 Godzilla.

First Kaiju attack in PacRim canonically takes place in San Fran, where the big final battle happens in Godzilla. The MUTOs in Godzilla have an eerily similar design to Clover, leading me to believe that Clover was a scout for the radiation that the MUTOs were seeking, and when it didn't find any on the east coast they went to the west and came in to finish the job. The Government covered up the Cloverfield incident by saying there was some kind of horrific nuclear plant explosion (I know that's reaching a bit but stick with me) and they were somehow completely unable to cover up San Francisco's attacks since the gays tweet shit everywhere and you can't silence them.
