Thanks for your opinions, guys. I'm new to TF toys. I just spent $350 this weekend on 3rd party stuff after months of hand-wringing and deliberation. Still going to think about Drift, but it's a steep price for a figure.
>>
>>6488838
I feel like the $180 range was where I'd cap out for this. There's some amazing engineering, and I'm not one of those "hurrdurr nontransforming" autists, but this is basically the same as much more fully realized Sentinel figures like Dancouga or Hulkbuster.

>I'm new to TF toys. I just spent $350 this weekend on 3rd party stuff after months of hand-wringing and deliberation. Still going to think about Drift, but it's a steep price for a figure.

Yeah, if you're still new, definitely don't go jumping in head first, especially on retardedly expensive single pieces like that. MMC is going to be doing a Drift that'll probably be a 3rd of that price, will transform, and probably have just as good articulation.

What'd you buy anyway?

What's that one 3P figure you periodically rediscover, feel tempted to buy, then repeatedly decide not to?

AFT Titanium Saint comes to mind for me. It checks all the boxes on looks, size, and articulation, but it just doesn't seem worth the $100+ it sells for. Neat underrated toy of an underrepresented character though.

Robot Hero Oversize Starscream and Green Starscream, Perfect Effect Origin Leonidas, Iron Factory Bridge Watcher Shockwave.

I'm really interested in Maketoys Striker Noir and Rioter Despotron, KuBainbaio MP10V-W White Optimus, MMC Kultur, and Perfect Effect Beast Gorira.
Goddamn that Gorira is gorgeous. I have tons of catching up to do, wish I hadn't wasted years chasing Marvel Legends and the like.

The gunpla general is filled with assholes that'll chase away novices in a minute, but one thing I'll admit I learned from them is to never panel line in black. Grey on white, or a lighter shade of the background color if you're willing to mix paint. The black lines brought out the detail, but they're way too thick.

But should you buy it? That's debatable. It's up to you. Can you afford it? Do you like Drift?

>>
>>6488934
Should have gone for the BB7/YesModel seekers instead, anon. And I assume the green Starscream was Acidstorm.

Let's hope Origin Leonidas has better QC than the original shitshow.

One or two anons in a previous thread had Rioter Despotron starting to leak plasticiser on them so you might want to hold off on them.

Beast Gorira has a few loose joints, so keep that in mind. It's the main reason I haven't bought it. Fuck Perfect Effect - they still have QC issues with a lot of their figures after all this time (and yes, I own some of their stuff).

I even got banned from TFS a while back because I followed their cancellation rules and policy but then they decided they didn't like me asking to cancel one item, so they banned me.

I'm still baffled by it. I double-checked everything after the fact and they were definitely in the wrong, but considering their shit customer service (not responding to my emails, taking ages to respond in general etc.) and their other problems, I wasn't about to bother asking them what happened. I just ignored them and went back to better retailers.
>>
>>6489589
It's not like it can't be done these days, but I suppose it depends on the company (i.e. some own their own factories and some don't, so obviously the ones who do will have lower overheads and therefore can pass on the savings to their customers).

Personally, I'm shitting on it for being a non-transforming Transformer. That to me shows real laziness, and missing the point of Transformers in general. Look at some of those insane Macross mechs that've been put out over the years for an example. Those still fucking transform, and they're far more impressive than this piece of shit Drift. "Ohh pistons" isn't even worth a fucking second glance, that Maketoys Starscream up in the past OP's has that, and the fucking thing still transforms, and it'll probably be a better toy than this overpriced hunk of shit Drift.

>>
>>6489867
>That to me shows real laziness, and missing the point of Transformers in general.

They can't even produce transforming figures due to how the licensing works for this stuff. hasTak won't allow a company to make a transforming figure with some exception.
Also, you know what all the apprehension over non-Transforming figures tells me? That a lot of people don't actually think Transformer designs are all that good, and only excuse them because of the transforming. non-transforming versions of transforming mecha has been a thing for decades, for probably literally thousands of toys, across priceranges from the cheap to the absurdly expensive. Citing "b-but the NAME is TRANSFORMERS" is such unbelievably obtuse and childish thinking.

>Look at some of those insane Macross mechs that've been put out over the years for an example. Those still fucking transform, and they're far more impressive than this piece of shit Drift. "

Macross figures aren't the absolute best of Japanese mecha toys. Maybe your limited experience may have you think this. I can definately say that the Drift figure does a lot of impressive things compared to a lot of those Macross figures. Also note that there are a good many impressive non-Transforming mecha figures, too, better than either.
>>
>>6489907
Pretty sure using Macross as an exemple is kind of a cheat because the mecha in the show are made to transform exactly like the toys, Transformers fucking cheats all the time. That's why we still don't have Transformers that looks exactly like their cartoon/comics counterpart while Macross' mechas have been spot on for a while now.

>neat transformation as expected

But:

>The headmaster head looks odd from the side if not situated perfectly because of the gap created in the helmet. Even then it looks off.
>Manipulating the head will always fuck with the visor piece and throw it off.
>loose tolerances for some bits like the wrists and asymmetrical foot
>between the ratchets on the hips it wobbles between each click.
>Vehicle mode is really stretching it. It's not as bad in hand but there is no proper way for it it sit without untransforming the tailfin for balance, the wings rely on the shoulder ratchets to keep it in place instead of locking in anywhere and the back section looks gappy or incomplete.
>Headmaster isn't painted up and doesn't fit others in the line.
>Hands aren't 5mm pegs for some reason and neither are his guns

I enjoy him for the $40 shipped I paid but only because I collect FP/MT stylized bots to go together. He's barely worth that with his problems I feel, even if he looks great once you have in posed. I really wished they would have kept the original design for the alt mode and just improved the articulation and sculpt, rather than give it the overhaul.

You could probably find mindwipe for $40 on BST. I think he was too simple and the wings's assembly is fucking stupid being on the shoulders, but his aesthetics are great. Dual shotguns, a coffin headmaster cockpit, and a fat bat mode. You can easily curl his legs to hang him upside down in bat mode which is how I have him displayed. He's one of the better ones but lacks an exciting transformation. you might need to polish the balljoints his arms are on because of the weight of the wings.

>That a lot of people don't actually think Transformer designs are all that good, and only excuse them because of the transforming

What I actually think is transforming is integral to the characters themselves. Making a non-transforming Transformer is missing the point entirely. It's supposed to transform, and part of what makes them so impressive in my eyes is when you can take a figure and finagle a good altmode out of it. It also makes it more of a challenge to design an actual, working figure that also transforms.

Like, to me, Optimus just wouldn't be Optimus if he didn't turn into some form of big red truck thing (well, except for Primal, but he gets a pass because he's not Optimus I suppose).

>>
>>6490033
Rubber I can kiiiiinda agree with (though I have a BW Rampage whose treads are in perfect condition and he's a 19 year old toy) but metal, whilst often misused, has its place. Certainly for a small, high-stress joint like that Sixshot's waist, it makes sense to use metal as it's much stronger than plastic can ever be. As long as they don't go full retard with the application of it it should be fine.

Case in point, I have Maketoys' Groove, who uses quite a bit of metal on him and he's one of the best designed toys I've ever handled (at least once you exchange the flimsy plastic handlebars for, oh yeah, metal ones).

I mean yeah metal for metal's sake doesn't usually go well but it does have a place.

Axle is a bad example considering just how many parts had to to be replaced on him.

Plus when you look into the logistics of it, Diescast parts end up cheaper than plastic, so it seems more like a cheap out than a design choice. Even then, adding weight to a figure seems like an unnecessary addition, espaeically on combiner limbs (granted they aren't scramble city, but point remains). To me, if you have to make a part metal to function properly, it seems more like poor design then anything else.

So you believe that under no conditions should a Transformers not transform even if the point of the particular figure is to look as accurate to the source material's botmode as possible? So never ever? It should never happen? And it harms you that it exists even though you don't have to buy it or look at it?

>>
>>6488838

>>
>>6490147

Supposedly they got more designers and a 2nd factory. This has been attributed to why they've been fucking some things up lately, the new designers and factory suck balls. Thats why we got complete gold like Overlord, and complete shit like Anubis whose mold they've whored out like 3 or 4 times now.

Their Hotrod isn't bad or anything though. It's just stylized like most of their releases, so it's not the EXACT spot on current IDW design. It has elements from a few IDW designs in it though. Basically a mashup of IDW designs.
>>
>>6490144

I never said it harms me, I think you're reading too deeply into it there, bro. Also, yeah, I don't think non-transforming Transformers should exist beyond cheapo kiddy shit or maybe a statue. Anything other than that should have no excuse to not transform, and if it's supposed to be a high end as fuck figure, all the more reason it SHOULD transform, and it also SHOULD look as accurate to the source as possible while doing so.

Optimus Optimus is at a really weird scale. If you're going by the cartoon, then he's very slightly too large for traditional MP scale, but also too small to be properly to scale with the BW MPs (which are too large to properly scale with the main MPs). This is brief going off comparisons where the BW crew is seen with some of the G1 crew in Optimal Situation.

I don't think perfect scale is really majorly important any way as long as it looks good and is at an approximate-enough size.

>>6489310
>Those alt modes are terrible
I mean they aren't great but they're not horrible. They're kinda like an IDW interpretation of Animated Megs' Cybertronian form. My only problem with them is that the cannon/drill makes partsforms to integrate with the alt modes. The partsforming itself doesn't really bother me because Megs' cannon partsforming has been pretty common among his various toys but the fact that it makes up such a large portion of his alt mode and is required to make the alt modes look like anything at all makes the engineering look and feel a little sub-par.
>make a solid case for stuff like this >>6488838
Does it really though? I mean the main draw of Transformers is still supposed to be the fact that they transform so having a figure that can't do that just feels kinda pointless. It does look really really nice but when it can't transform, half of the appeal is gone for me, even if the alt mode was lackluster anyway. In Megs' case, his mediocre alt mode doesn't really hurt him much because the figure still looks great in bot mode with few sacrifices necessary to allow it to transform. I'm not overly thrilled by his alt mode but it looks at least passable for a Cybertroniann form and isn't going to turn me off of buying the figure.
>>
Just here to say, Cybertron was the best transformers fiction since G1, and had far fewer animation errors, it also used the myths of the past to their advantage with thw four continent ships and primus.

Grow up, anon. This is the Transformers third-party general, not Autistic Manchild Central (okay, it's both, but the point is that you're firmly in the latter camp).
>>

I would put money on this being correct.

Also, I loathe rub symbols. I never got the point outside of them being a silly gimmick. Either you show me the damn insignia or you don't. I don't want to blow on you or rub you down to see it. That's just nasty.

Go away. People are allowed to like things you don't like, anon, and some of us like non-transforming Transformers action figures (and I personally have both transforming and non-transforming figures in my collection).
You're the only one who is sperging out, because you can't accept that people like something which you don't, and you have to berate them for it constantly.
Deal with it. People like things you don't, and that's okay. Or not, according to you. Fucking seriously...

He's pretty cool. Some of his joints can be a little loose or wonky, but you can futureshine them easily. The screw that holds his tail pieces in will constantly unscrew itself when transforming. Mine actually stripped out the hole, so I just partsform his tail now, I guess. It pretty poseable and has a wonderful style, but in my opinion, it looks like cheap garbage unless you're willing to paint it. I mean, unless you like the cheap, flat gray and yellow cartoon look, then whatever.
>>
>>6491748
>I mean, unless you like the cheap, flat gray and yellow cartoon look

I do, because I have the original toy, and he was a darker swirly gray plastic man. Never got the idea Grimlock was ever supposed to be silver between the toy and the cartoon. If anything he always looked like he'd be more of a dull metallic at best, the kind that most certainly doesn't shine. Like old, pitted iron or something.
>>
>>6491757
>Never got the idea Grimlock was ever supposed to be silver
Who cares? Silver looks better. Some of us aren't cucked by accuracy. I never understood the mentality that something that looks objectively cheap and shitty is considered good just because it's accurate to an old crappy cartoon and/or toy. Besides, comic Grimlock is considered silver for some reason, and he's superior to the cartoon version in just about every way.
>>

Same reason you think comic Grimlock looks better: Nostalgia. Anyway, do you think maybe something like Loctite (if that even is safe for plastic?) might keep the screw from unscrewing? Or does it NEED to move for the tail to move?
>>
>>6491765
Silver often looks incredibly tacky on Transformers figures. Imagine if they made every yellow figure gold.

I never read the comics, I just know about them. I've only been a fan of G1 since about 2009. I just think silver looks better than gray.

>do you think maybe something like Loctite (if that even is safe for plastic?) might keep the screw from unscrewing?
The problem is that the screw needs spin freely, which is why it unscrews itself. It should really be a pin, but since it's a kit, they couldn't do that. You can see where the screw should go in my picture, it goes through the red panel and into a piece on the tip of his tail, which then pivots around the red panel for transformation. What you could probably do is put a tiny dab of superglue into the hole on his tail, and then put the screw through, but not tighten it. It'll hold the screw into the tail piece, while allowing it to spin freely through the red piece.

I have to be honest I agree. I don't care for the yellow and I much prefer the "gold chrome greebles under clear smoky plastic" look of the old toys, but bright silver looks really tacky on Dinobots. Not to say they should be dull grey though, but I think a compromise is the best option- a dark steel or iron look as you say is a good look.

But then the G1 Dinobots were some of the best looking toys from the line IMO. I saw some at TFNation and they looked gorgeous.

As someone who owns all the old Dinobots (except Swoop...Never had Swoop), I can tell you, putting the chrome under that plastic was the BEST fucking idea they had. I really do want this thing, even though I own the original Grinder already. It's just so beautifully gaudy. My one main complaint is that it's supposed to be the comic colors (as are the other silver FT Dinobots) but it still uses black instead of that dark navy blue that comics usually substitute for black. I mean I understand that using black on the figure is still technically correct because of that, I just think it would have looked much better to use the blue instead.

I wish IF's seekers did the vertical stabilizers better. They only stay on by a tiny friction joint and they can be pretty loose. Ghost, Skywarp and Sunstorm (not pictured) all have stabilizers firm enough to stay still however you put them, but my Starscream and Thundercracker are totally wobbly. Thundercracker's stabilizers in particular really like leaning to the right.

It would have been better to have them pinned possibly, or at least use a larger friction joint to make them tighter (or easier to tighten). Or just have them stuck on straight without being able to bend, you're meant to bend them as part of the transformation but I tend to just leave them as is.

First of all, I'm not Japanese. I'm about as pasty white as you can get.

To my knowledge, the artist said GT contacted them to ask if they could use their designs but the artist said no, which is perfectly reasonable and understandable given the unofficial nature of their doujin art books.

And for the record, I never said the artist had any involvement, nor am I trying to get them in trouble. On the contrary, I defended the artist's actions unlike the people who attacked him. I also own both T-Beast books (two copies of the first, in fact), so hopefully you know where I stand on the matter.

I'm not debating that, but it's not accurate to ANYTHING. It's half comics colours, half toy/cartoon colours. That's just... weird. And a shame, because if it were Marvel Comics colours, I'd have bought it without a second thought.

But anon, don't you want a tenth set of Dinobots, your three-hundredth G1 Optimus Prime, and five other companies to make a G1 Starscream that isn't much better than MP-11?

This is a letdown on 2 fronts; first off, they should've fucking said if it didn't get enough PO's, it wouldn't go out. I did PO mine like.. 3 days ago, but still, I almost guarantee it would've gotten people moving. I was almost waiting for it to just release before buying it.

Second, fuck you G1 faggots. Go fuck off a cliff and die with your dumbass brick aesthetics based on a shitty 80's cartoon. I'm so fuckin' salty right now as this doubles as a realization of how shitty this fandom is; I already distanced myself heavily from most of the trash, but this is like a boiling-hot pot of reality being dumped on my face.

I'd say the blame is on them for relying of Pre order without saying so. By principle I try not to pre order if possible and I feel like the Galaxy Meteor is the kind of toy that gets really popular after release not before.

Don't forget the inevitable Diaclone, G2, Black, White, SG, Comic, Shiny, Translucent, and other recolors that will fill the sites regardless of how well the figure sells or even if it's good quality.

Aren't you glad this is coming out instead of that crappy Cybertron Starscream?

>says dumbass brick aesthetics
>wanted a design based on the fucking blockiest Starscream ever

Brick means boring, flat, and lacking detail, kind of like the current spergwar over Omega Supreme.

Jesus Christ anon, we're allowed to like different things. The fact is that there is more demand for G1 stuff right now, and most of this is MakeToys' fault anyway.

There's no reason we can't have G1 AND other stuff. I was barely still a kid when Cybertron was out so it's technically part of my childhood, and I know there are plenty of others around my age (and probably in this thread) who had Cybertron in their childhood or was with them when they were teenagers, at least, so I have an attachment to Cybertron but I still prefer G1 stuff.

But the point is, more and more of THESE fans will eventually be more of the market. I guess MakeToys were just a bit too early here. Maybe if they had done Armada Starscream, things would have been different.

Still, I would have bought this in a heartbeat... once I got the money, and my income isn't amazing, so I can't just buy a big, expensive figure like this immediately.

No, "brick" typically means it has little-to-no articulation and is often blocky/chunky.

WHAT

NONONONONONONO I NEVER PREORDER

What really sucks is a small number of them went on sale at TFnation. Look for those to be hitting up ebay for extreme prices....

Fine then. G1 designs are boring slabs* of plastic shit.

>company tries to make non-G1 figure
>gets fucking D E N I E D

Goddamnit I'm just laughing too hard. We keep telling you people only G1 matters, well, here it is. Now you'll believe us when we tell you only G1 matters.

However, that said, it is a shame the figure isn't going to be made. It did look really good. Too bad they didn't blow their wad on the actual Starscream, instead of this Not-Starscream from a universally reviled series.
