She's the only one I have.... but God has she been hit hard with the ugly stick. She lives with my chainsword wielding "Space Eunuch". Not sure what GW was thinking when they named him.

So I won some store credit at my FLGS and figured it was as good a chance as any to get into 40k. I picked up a beginner paint set that came with clippers, paints, glue, and a brush, and some adeptus mechanicus skitarii.

what the fuck do I do now?
>>
>>55325037

Oh and I've got some gray spray primer I was using for craft projects, is gray primer alright? I see most people use black.
>>
>>55325037
Watch Duncan, paint dudes, have fun.
And remember to thin your paints.
>>
>>55325037
Clip minis, shave minis, glue / prime, thin, layer, highlight/drybrush, base, seal. Good luck
>>
>>55325037
make sure you get some more paints
That starter kit has a good variety but it obviously won't be enough
Are you gonna do the standard red robes?
>>
>>55325071
any color is fine it just changes how your base coats will apply/look.

Yeah I'm not gonna be able to afford more citadel paints, I lucked out with the store credit. It's gonna have to be the wal-mart brand for any color not in the kit. Married life is suffering sometimes.

Red robes, yeah.

You should look into Vallejo paints, they sell them at hobby lobby, about half the price of GW paint

So, as a first-time painter, I fizzled around with some paints and mixing and applied some to my plastic minis. After all, I'm not pleased with the color (how it came out, how thick the paint was etc.)

Question now is: how do I remove the paint from the plastic without damaging it? Will my Basing be damaged too, do I need to respray it with base coats? I heard from people in my LGS that they had always mediocre results trying to remove paint from minis.

Another simple question: As stated I'm new to painting at all (I gailed arts miseeably in school) and I'm not having that many colors available. However I'd like to mix certain stuff, e.g. black+grey, to get a darker grey for example. Should I try to keep this in a wet palette, or should I consider buying new paints for the sake of consistency? Reminder, I'm pretty bad at drawing and stuff related.

Thanks in advance for your answers. Cheers.
>>
>>55325677
>how do I remove the paint from the plastic without damaging it?
Meet your new god.
>>
>>55325694

Store credit dude here. One of my friends is offering to trade me his shittily painted guard army for my extra Kindle. It's a complete army he says. Should I do it? I didn't realize I could remove paint from minis so I hadn't even been considering it (it's REALLY bad)
>>
>>55325694
Shame I'm not from America; I'm from overseas. I assume this is some kind of glass cleaner? Would that actual work too, or would that dissolve my mini? Kinda afraid after hearing many of those 'yea it dissolved/broke' stories.
>>
>>55325727
a few dollars spent on some simple green or on the Easy-Off oven degreaser can turn a shite army into a fresh new one waiting to be painted.
>>
>>55325677
Soak them in pine sol for like 3-4 hours and scrub with a toothbrush (repeat this untill you reach a point where you want)
It won't be 100% but if you want to avoid corroding the plastic don't just pop em in there and leave for 24 hours like some tutorials might say, the trick is to keep an eye on the progress.
You will definitely have to re-prime.

As for the paints just do what your comfortable with, if your worried about consistency keep a notebook of what you mix and the ratios you use.
Don't be afraid to try new stuff anon
>>
>>55325755
Thanks. I'm not really finding myself all comfortable seeing that I'm a late-bloomer regarding the painting stuff. People tell me to 'just do it and learn' but I kinda feel bad if people are like 'lol your first minis suck' because they're pretty invested and good at it.
>>
>>55325727

He's got a tank with a dozer blade on the front, kinda diagonal shaped, a jeep with an artillery piece on the back, one of the chicken walker things (sentinel?), about 75 guardsmen of various models (he says he has rogue trader era and some OOP steel legion), about 15 heavy weapons crews, and a plastic carrying case full of bits. and probably more stuff I don't remember off the top of my head

How? If you're going to give criticism you should be specific on what doesn't work or was poorly done so that the creator knows what they need to improve on. Just saying "looks bad" doesn't help anyone.

>>
>>55327821
People will compliment your models when they are good, sometimes though good stuff is ignored. I've had some of my stuff go without comments before. People on here will also criticize models on what needs improvement and that should be taken as an opportunity to improve, not as attacks on your skill as a painter. If you want smoke blown up your ass go to instagram or something.
>>
>>55327899
I want my models to be perfect especially fulgrim
>>
It's been years since I've bought a GW kit so I forgot that they don't bag things up neatly and just throw everything loose in the box and hope for the best.
>>
>>55327922
Then keep practicing and listen to criticism. Also don't try to make things perfect, they never will be and you'll ruin a lot of stuff trying to make it perfect.

>>
Two general questions.

Does anyone else not enjoy patch painting? Patch painting gets me done faster, but I feel like the quality suffers.

Also, who else paints before they build models? I don't see people paint 100% put together models.
>>
>>55325727
yes because it's crack now and you might as well buy as much as you can before you have to start succing dicc
>>
>>55327973
I don't like painting more than one model at once and I always paint in as many pieces as I can.
>>
>>55327973
I patch paint, but only specific models. I run Necrons, so you can imagine.

I paint in sections, depending on the model. If I assemble it, and a feature interrupts something behind it, I do some painting before assembly.
So for example I paint the crest and ribs before putting the gun on the warriors.
>>
>>55326194
why would he take credit for work that is CLEARLY superior to his own

>>55325854
just give up now and offer to clean her brushes
>>
>>55327973
I usually build my models completely before painting, If there's pieces that obscure details I want to paint, like guns over chests, then I will typically leave those off and paint them separate, but I've started just building them fully before painting because it's less annoying to put them together first.
>>
How the fuck do I go about painting seeker chariots. I tried leadbelcher on krylon flat black with a druchii violet wash and some runefang steel on top of that but it just looked ugly
Also, should I be using krylon flat black or something else? I noticed that the paint I put on can be scraped off with a fingernail pretty effortlessly

About to paint the terrain from the SWA box. I don't have many yellows, so I'm planning on going with brown and steel for more of the walkways, and rusty red for the large pipes and containers.

However, I'm not sure what to use for the walkways. My brother tells me to use Runefang steel, but I think that might be too shiny. Is a metallic color a good idea for this?

>To get back on topic can someone explain this chart to me?

Like >>55327038 said, you pick a colour in the middle column - a Base paint. Base paints have more pigment, and designed to be the first coat on top of your primer.

If your technique is layering (for most things, especially Space Marines, it oughta be!), you layer the Layer paints shown as you move from the middle column (your base colour) to the final highlight shown at the far left. If your technique is instead drybrushing, you move from the middle column to the right.

The end result is shown on the Space Marine backpack on either (layers, left; drybrushing, right) side.

You never use pure black as a base for black or pure white as a base for white. You want to use a colour that's close so you have room to shade or highlight, respectively.

Thanks, bro. I'm not sure exactly what bothers me yet - I think it's mostly the gems on the guns. They looked off, so I tried to outline them with agrax. I can clean that up a bit, but I'm not sure if it will look right either. Maybe should have non-gemmed the bumps on the gun.

I'm also thinking I did too much sharp edge highlighting with fenris grey on non-sharpest edges. Probably should have had more medium grey highlight showing. I used eshin but it barely showed, I'm not sure what I'd use otherwise.

I really dig the over all color scheme though. Bone/Black/Red is pretty rad.

Would Zandri dust washed with seraphim sepia look better than zandri washed with agrax then layered on flat areas with ushabti bone?

Of course you can use cheaper paint. Your mileage may vary though. Not all paints really lend themselves for the kind of painting techniques most people do on minis.

Scale 75's metallics are breddy gud. Nothing outstanding in terms of quality (on a par with everyone else really) but they do some oddball ones which work well. Their 'Black Metal' is great for doing black armour on space marines etc.

A rock can work pretty well for hammering nails, doesn't mean it should be your first pick. Brake fluid's expensive by weight, and it's toxic. Tons of other things that can strip plastic that are safer.

I agree. Nonetheless, in France we do not have the equivalent of the pure rubbing alcohol you have in the US (or if we have some, I am not aware of it). Brakes fluid is one of the best options we get. (All the cleaning alcohol we can get are diluted and not effective at stripping).

That's not an entirely uncommon background for a regiment. There's plenty of low-tech feudal worlds where the nobility has access to fancy tech but the masses don't. Doesn't stop the Munitorum from accepting a tithe of fighting men, teaching them how to lasgun and throwing them into the meatgrinder.

Regiments getting reinforcements from home largely depends on whether there's an established tradition of raising forces from that planet. If there is then reinforcements are either raised and dispatched or, more rarely, decimated regiments are sent back to their homeworld to train and take on new recruits (and having fun learning about how the passage of time and warp travel interact).

Basecoat whole surface

Wash regardless of fully or not, it's just for the recesses

Layer 1, cover the surface as a basecoat again but leaving the recesses unpainted (where the wash sits)

Edge hihglight just the edges from Layer 1

Yes (and a few other places), but with a head swap. The kit comes with two unhelmeted heads - one with an osmotic gill and the other with a targeter eye - so the armoured head must've come from a different sprue.

This is the current bog standard terminator squad. I don't remember my picture being this shitty, but ... there are no extra heads in this kit. Unless you buy extras as bitz, convert one of your squad to be helmetless to free one up, or trade with a mate who has spares (such as the Blood Angel Terminator Assault Squad, which has four torsos featuring helmets and five different heads for the sergeant!), you won't be able to get them from here.

Huh. That sure is a shitty picture. After close in-person examination, I've found that on the sprue with the purity seals, there is an unhelmeted head; so, if you're willing for one of your squad to go without, that would free up an extra to put on your captain.

>All space marine sprues come with enough helmets for all models, regardless of unit

Right, but in some cases, you get *extras*. for example, If you get the new 10-man Space Marine Reivers box, it comes with ten models - but you get a whopping 24 heads! This allows you to choose for the squad it comes with, and/or top up your bitz box with the leftovers.

If you build your terminator squad as shown on the box - with a bald sergeant - that would leave you with an extra terminator helmet to put on the Ultramarines Terminator Captain, who comes with a choice of two unhelmeted heads (pic related).
>>
>>55326668
Pretty damn good. As you go forward, you should consider mixing in some different shirt and pants colors, or adding nits of trim color to guns and shoulderpads. Once you're cranking out boyz, it's easy to just throw some red paint on a few shootas and shoulderpads, or do several with khaki pants. That sort of thing.

It's personal taste, but I don't like having mobs of orks where they're all uniformly dressed. Doesn't feel right.

Acrylic probably isn't any cheaper than resin desu, and the thicker stuff is heavy as fuck in large sheets and very hard to work with without a laser or router.
Regular, clear casting fibreglass resin is cheap as chips lad, just get some of that

I made that chart and I'm afraid it's litteraly the only faction you can do it with.

Even CSM, who have the biggest of "Your Dudes" potential, after SM, don't have enough named warbands with a different colour scheme to fill 100 cases. God knows I tried.

Need a update where kit specific chapters (BA/DA/SW/SW/GK) are removed or split into their own sections
>>
>>55336239
Well yes but I try to keep it logical and "fair".

You will notice that I organised the Marines by Legion number and then added their successors after them (roughly so, some chapters like SW and Salamanders don't have enough successors to fill their line, so I put chapters that, in my mind, could be related).
No point in making a chart if half of it is Ultramarines or Thousand Sons. I wanted to give every sub-faction an equal chance.
>>
>>55336323
Bloody hell mate. People can do that themselves. If at least they would paint what they roll, that'd be a great step forward.

>>
>>55336413
I mean, it's not exactly hard to reroll, is it?

It can also be used (I hope) when someone hasn't bought anything yet and wants to see what fate gives him.

That, and if someone discovers new interesting chapters thanks to my chart, I'm a happy man.

Anyone wanna give me tips on making these Peasant conscripts better?

The lore right now is essentially there's various regiments which are based on fuedal class. Peasants get thrown into the conscript battalions and their pay goes to their lords. They can earn their freedom and be invited to join a freikorp, which are the dudes with feathers in their cap. The majority of the soldiers I want to be like, glove slapping, selfish, prideful idiots who all want to look like peacocks.

I also have a lot of Rough Riders I'm planning on making from OOP empire knights and swapping the heads for either

Tempestus Scion heads (most sci-fi looking)
Skitarii Vanguards (sci fi knights)
Greatsword heads, which are the most themed for being flamboyant prick regiments.

I also run a bunch of Tempetus Scions. Socially, how should Stormtroopers slot in? What about Imperial Knights? Am i making it too complicated?

>>
>>55340357
First, you learn how to read the OP
>>
>>55340357
haven't magnetized a contemptor before, but I would do this...
...drill and scratch holes at that places, where you usually glue the weapons to the dread
...do the same with the weapons
...glue magnets into the holes, just make sure you have the opposite polarity on dread and weapon (two ways to do this, you either mark with a edding which side is which one, or you glue one magnet first on the dread, wait until he is fixed, but the other magnet on it, and glue the weapon now on the magnet, make sure you accidently don't glue it on the dread)

if you need magnets, for dreads I would recommend with 6mm diameter (if you wanna know how much that is in imperial/USA-measurement, in the op-thread is a link from miniwargaming who tells you what magnets do you need)
