How do you get the look of the fatigues/cloth parts of units like these scouts?

I am putting together my first army, crimson fists also, and don't really know how to get this look of dark fabric.

I have them primed black, will it just be a dark grey, nuln wash, then light grey highlight?

I circle the areas I am talking about
>>
anybody have any glue recommendations?

preferably with a good applicator.
>>
>>55229689
Yea, basecoat of mechanicus standard grey, black wash then going over the raised bits with mechanicus again, maybe a little bit of administratum grey for highlights.
That's how i'd do it anyway.

I'm just about finished with these death guard but I've always been terrible at base considerations. I figured maybe doing something like one of Duncan's swamp bases or Realm of Nurgle stuff should be fine with Stirland Mud but would any basing experts know what colors would go well with what I got? I was thinking dark brown or black for the mud then those fun pools of nurgle's rot.

Starting some guard? Damn fine choice, trooper - probably the second best army for fun conversions so you best not squander it now. Take your time and make your boys exactly how you want to. Don't be afraid to get down and dirty with a hobby knife, cut up paper clips, and some good ol' green stuff.

If you need some inspiration (or just some music for when you're working), try these. Maybe one will strike a chord with you.

I have loved the guard for a long time, these are also my disposable guys actually, going to buy some bits and make a whole custom army, since before my purchase I have been writing a book of lore not just of my guard, but over their planet as well. Trying to make a guard Regiment based of STALKER and metro. I need to go to sleep because I have PT in the morning and it's my first time doing cadence for our run. Though if I come back and anyone's willing I would love to share the lore I'm making for these guys.

But yeah currently handed them off to a Dark Eldar friend for now to assemble and paint. So I can get my constructs finished and he can get some paint experience in.

That flag looks like the perfect opportunity to have the whole boar in a running pose
>>
>>55231240
>unsure how to put that into this weird flag shape
do it so the boar head is facing the other way, also you could make a card/paper stencil and just trace the outline to get the same basic shape on both sides.

Damn it. I just want to have a bunch dudes drop out of the sky with bullpup lasguns and warthogs, but it's either $45+ for 3-5 dudes, or shitty china on small, spindly models.
>>

That's a good idea, thank you

That sounds neat, I think I'd do the boar head facing left and have the neck blend into the tears on the right of the flag so detailing won't be too hard.

Revell Contacta Professional has the best bottle design for plastic cement I've found. The cement is pretty standard quality, which is fine so long as you are only bonding HIPS. I've not found a solvent which works on ABS, etc. and comes with an applicator at all.

For superglue, I think gorilla glue gel works OK. You need to give it a good shake to load it into the nozzle before squeezing, but it has a nice thick consistency and seems to dry fairly strong.

>>
>>55232573
I give em a few hours. It depends how thick you put it on. Solid thick layers will take more than 15-30 minutes to fully dry. The edges and surface might be dry but I've poked at it and had chunks fall off or get wrinkled since the interior was still wet

not him, but depends on what you want. if it's dry dusty desrt terrain, you want to use lighter colours that imply the bark has dried out. Where as for dense lush rainforest kind of looks, the bark needs darker colours to imply they are still moist.

My local GW paint most of their terraint rees by dry brushing a dark brown, then a grey over the top and aggraxing it. turns out pretty good, more "realistic" kind of colour, as that guy was saying, i think.

I'll give you stuff piece by piece first here is the basic info on the regiment to get a basic understanding of what i'm working with. My Regiment when finished will be based on things like STALKER, Metro, and other post apocalypse Russian themes. Mixed with my time in the military as an Officer and learning how awesome combined arms operations are, with an emphasis for outsmarting enemies through superior tactics, and learning to adapt to constantly changing factors. I'll give more info as I post. These are the guys I plan to use as main line STALKERs possibly, with a bit of conversion with lasguns they will be great.

Putosh Environment: Putosh was Originally a vibrant forest world, with some swamps and fields. From space you will notice 5 main landmasses with 2 groups of them separated by a massive ocean. The temperature of Putosh is something akin to being perpetually in the old Terran season of Fall and sometimes Winter. The Planet is also very humid with large amounts of rain, and lightning storms. The current landscape has changed much with the introduction of the Forges and Mechanicus but the life on Putosh proves resilient since after the Great Blowout. Some Forges and Habs were completely left empty and in critical state of disrepair, and in some cases nature has taken back the land engulfing the Machine Gods forges. Though nature is coming back it still bears the scars of the forges and habs that were once populated. Many forest are now host to more gangly looking trees and vines, perpetual fogs wraps some of the forest and abandoned areas covered in overgrowth, as abominations and hunters, both Stalk the ruins going at each other. Though these old habs and forges are being taken back and repopulated, and returned to their former glory. Forges flickering back on, and habs bustling with noise and people, thanks to the efforts of Stalkers, Rangers, and Hunters to clear them of abominations for new life to bloom and machines to flicker on. A Symbol of the refusal of humanity to simply give up and come back from even the darkest of times.

>Will finish this part in next post but quick note. The idea of Putosh is a mix of environments I either grew up in or seen in media that has an aesthetic I like. Examples are.
1: My home in Spotsylvania, heavy fog and forest and stuck with perpetual rain and storm most of the year.
2: Chernobyl, duh.
3: Detroit
4: Hashima Island, referenced in picture is an abandoned Japanese island that was reclaimed by nature.
and many more.

Putosh Environment pt2:
The main show on the other hand remains the Zone, stuck in a state of abandon, all forges, habs, forest, and swamps of the zone are considered unable to be reclaimed due to the constant blowouts, and repopulation of abominations but instead are cordoned off with a large walls manned by the best Putosh has to offer. The walls stand tall a testament of the Omnissiah’s will over the cruel machinations of beast and organics attempting to assail her. As the walls shadow is cast down on the twisted lands of the zone. Cruel beast stalk the ruins of ancient glory, and deep within dark woods. Smugglers set up bases within abandoned hovels and homes that lay scattered in the more outer part of the zone, as they go about their work killing and capturing abominations for one of the many off-worlders willing to pay a large price for these creatures or the artifacts created from the anomalies of the zone.

Picture is my home area. One of the basis for Putosh Terrain that is outside of the reach of Habs and forges.

Next up is your choice, special troop choices taken from other regiments on Putosha that can be added to my force in game as specialist forces. The pre-heresy history of Putosh. The battle of Sukhoputnyy most, specifically "Bastion 01". Or random cultural facts I made to make Putosh feel more like a world of different culture and life than else where. Or best in my opinion, the Putosh system itself and its Dual star arrangement (Yes dual star systems actually exist.)

Boob armour is shorthand of "this is a lady" when it comes to miniatures. All other detail is too subtle, or so the reasoning goes.

If you want non-booby guardswomen you either shell out the big bucks for Victoria Miniatures or stick Statuesque heads on regular Cadian bodies and put any oddness down to baggy fatigues and heroic scale.

I found the best way to get a smooth coat is buy the right primer, and make sure you are priming correctly.

Obviously thin your paints

I dont have a pic of the ones I did yesterday. They were probably the worse. pic related did a month ago and looks alittle better than the two new ones. This one is definaly smoother but you can tell the way the was settled that its far from perfect.

I think maybe using gesso or bighting the bullet and using an airbrush to prime might be the biggest help. Still that doesnt fix the base coat if that issue too.

It looks to me like you're not applying enough wash onto the model. It's not supposed to be a light coat, it needs to be applied liberally and allowed to flow into the recesses.
>>
>>55238988
Brake fluid?
>>
>>55239157
>>55239515
Or I should specify, you're not loading enough wash onto your brush. It shouldn't really go on in "strokes", you should almost be able to just dab the brush on the model and let the wash do the rest.
>>
>>55239157
I would suggest to try and thin your paint more than what you usually do (at least taking into account the minia as reference).
I'm pretty new to the hobby, but many diluted layers of paint will give you a much smoother effect than a single heavy one.
And work on the precision, the brushwork on that eagle on the chest piece is a signal that either you are using a way too big brush, that you shake (fix the minia somewhere and hold your brush hand with your other hand, it can help) or that you have a shitty brush with no point.
What really helped me in the beginning was thinning paint with a medium (the W&N one is great) and buying a sable brush (and treating it very good, using soap to re-do the point at the end of every paiting session).
But most important, keep at it, everybody sucked at the beginning.
Hope it helps.

I dont think think thinng my paints is the issue. I use about slighly under 1:1 with distilied water. Unless im not mixing properly. It in recessed pallet so it more or less contacts directly fully instead of blending it would on a flat pallet.

It could be my brushes. I do my best to keep them up. I use brush soap after every session to. Though I they are slightly curreled at the end after only a few uses. Its my first brush set so i wanted to get a a wide variety of low-mid end brushes to see what I liked. Pic related if youre familiar with the set. Any better ones you would suggest?

Any medium quality artists brushes will do (don't buy GW's, they fray super fast)
Things like W&N cotman or sceptre gold 2 will do and are around £4 per brush.

Not really sure what is going on with the uneven paint applications. Black gesso is really foolproof to prime with. It might be less finicky for you than a spray primer.

Looks like a Wraiths uper body for the chest, and a Command Barges/Night Scythes...scythes for the shoulderblades. Arms could be of a Triarch Stalker, forearms look like Gauss Blaster from Immortals.
For his actual body, probably a Destroyer Lord on the tail of a Wraith on the lower half of a Destroyer or the back of a Canoptek Spyder, with the carapace removed. The thruster bits could be from the Command Barge as well, the legs from the Canoptek Spyder or a Wraith.
No idea what Necron unit has articulated hands like that, but the scythe is probably scratchbuilt.

Probably a Tomb Stalker.
Or if your opponents aren't dipshits and you're okay with the idea, maybe as a C'tan shard, or just as a regular Destroyer Lord. Although the Destroyer Lord would probably seem a bit off on such a huge model.

Is that grainy effect there also after base? or just after wash?

don't have any of the newer plastic kits, but from just wanted to point out that from a lore pov mixing armor mks makes sense.

Seeing as this is wip, this may be something you are gonna do anyway, but I like to add some color variation to the skin on certain models.
A spot of color on the lower lip or a some really thin glazes around the nose, knuckles or ears for guys standing in colder places etc.

Nice painting.

A lot of these old sculpts really hold up surprisingly well with a nice paint job.

I might set aside a few mini's for test scheme's and to figure out how I'm going about painting something. But you got to dig in and just work at stuff, otherwise your cool stuff is going to spend eternity in it's box.

Like I got the mini 40k starter with 3 Primaris marines and 3 reapers. A perfect start to test out how I want to do my Imperial Fists, didn't stop me from painting up my Apothecary (white armor, completely different scheme), or my Redemptor dread (converted to have chicken walker legs).

Still thinking on what to do with those plague marines. Got like 4 khorne zerkers out to test paint schemes (black legion with gold, black legion with dark metals, or a renegade's with a white washed sort of armor).

In the end, it's all practice, so don't let fear hold you back from working on your awesome shit.

I'd say a good 80% of the time spent painting a model my model looks like total shit. It's only in the last stages when applying final highlights that it starts to look anything remotely decent. I wish I had known that before because I got so dis heartened in the past that my models look crap that I'd give up before finishing.
It's really the last bit of care that makes all the difference. The rest is just applying the base coat properly and within the lines which for me anyway is a long and time consuming process.

Just doing a usual swampo base. Which of these base colors looks better? Kinda considering going base coating and highlighting for the grey mud but the brown might be better with the contrast.

thats the problem too im finding with a lot of camos is that they look very blobby or just very cartoonish though the camos ive seen for 40k minis is usually some bright woodland mix or urban.

Painting a bastilodon for the first time. How do I get the effect on the ends of the armor plates here? Is that all freehanded or is it some kind of wash or spray?

Looks like airbrushing with a stencil, but who knows. Could be done freehand as well I guess.

Paint each blotch individually
Start with a base of light green and then fill the middle with yellow.
If your good enough you can try using a blending effect to make the light green and yellow gradient together.
