Not bad! You can use a brush that's wet with a bit of water to smooth out the surface of the GS without deforming it.

Hope that helps.

I just picked up a couple packs of WizKids' new pre-primered minis. Word to the wise: make sure you scrub the shit out of them. My paint did not want to stick on the one I started, and I wanted to get started on it right away and didn't scrub it. Huge mistake. Otherwise, the details are okay for what they are. I bought the pack of Kobolds, and the facial details are muddled, but I assume its because they're small. The whole "leveled up adventurer" is a cool idea, but you can totally get away with using them as two different characters. Overall, 7/10. If they continue to put out minis, while keeping old stock "in print" they'll definitely give Reaper a run for their money. At my FLGS, they were actually cheaper or nearly identical in price than Bones.

I don't have any WIP or completed pics because I'm at work

>>
>>52553013

Does the mint in-box model of Artemis come with a helmet option?
>>
>>52553106
Afaik it doesn't.
The helmets were part of the bitspack range for Inquisitor.
I know that there have been some inconsistencies with the exact contents of the Inquisitor miniatures though, it could be possible that later runs might have had it.
Usually you only get the unhelmeted version of him though.

The helmets are exceedingly rare these days.
It's the reason I'm asking if the plastic Gulliman fits in terms of scale, since he comes with a helmet.

Finished up a batch of 20 Skitarii Vanguard and Rangers. The bodies the in the pictures you've posted are Inquisitor Greyfax and a Sister of Silence respectively. I'm not 100% on the weapons but I think they may be admech.

If you want to make some arbites, good sources of bits are the Genestealer Cults Neophytes (shotgun, webber pistol, nice armour), Skitarii (tasers, batons, pistols and augs), Tempestus Scions (for armour, mostly). If you wanted some female ones, add in the Sisters of Silence and you'd be set.

Going to buy a light primer so I have another priming option except black for the lighter paint schemes. Is the Vallejo 601 Grey Primer good (ie, not too dark so I can paint light colours straight over it) or is White better?

They're lead though, so watch out.

>>

Yeah, Packaging on the baggy it came in said contains lead.
>>
>>52555098
it's usually a mixture of pewter and lead.
Considering how bright the metal is, I'd say the majority is probably pewter.

Making minis out of pure lead or mainly lead isn't really done anymore these days.
>>
>>52555098
That mean it's a pewter mix with lead, not necessarily solid lead.
Usually no more than 5%

Agreed. Lead is heavy, soft, toxic and cheap. Modern pewter is made mostly of tin which is shiny, (somewhat) brittle, and expensive. It's frequently mixed with bismuth and sometimes copper... and sometimes just a little bit of lead.

I used to work in a Michaels, there's a few things you could get that would be able to seal that on, without marring the images on the paper. Simplest would be a little bottle of "mod podge", but if you want to go more heavy duty, there's some types of varnish that won't melt the paper.

There are all sorts of things that can discolor the various types of metals Citadel has used over the decades. There's really no telling if you're buying them second-hand. The first and most obvious is models that were previously painted but have now been stripped.

The usual rules for casting apply in terms of escape channels, but you might want to preheat the mold before casting. You probably still have a few bad pulls before the mold is hot enough to not cool the metal before it has filled the mold.

Personally I switched to resin cause it's cleaner, easier, faster, less dangerous, I can do it indoors, at night and in my bathrobe.

Anyway personally I think resin is a better way to go cause resin is cheaper and considering the amounts you are gonna cast for personal use a little goes a long way.

In your opinions what is it that makes it not read as a Chaos Sorcerer? Is it that he doesn't come across as the traditional Wizard in flowing robes wielding a staff?

In my opinion the char is a decent balance between the fightiness and magical capabilities of a Chaos Sorcerer, seeing as they are statwise basically a warrior of Chaos able to wield magic.
The miniature is made as if it is about to cast the signature spell of the
Lore of Nurgle (Stream of Corruption: "The caster's maw distends wide like a serpent before spewing forth a noxious stream of disease and filth that chokes and suffocates the foes nearest to him"). The kilt provides a subtle visual reminder of the flowing robes of a traditional mage while the sheated sword and shield slinged over his back is a representation of the fact that the character is not primarily concerned with the actual physical combat of a battle (while also being a handy way to include them when using the torso/head-piece in question. Lastly his plate armour significes that allthough he isn't primarily a combatant he is capable of duking it out in hand to hand if it comes to that.

Out of curiosity - What would you guys like a melee-capable, heavily armoured battle mage, to look like?

So just for clarification
Matte varnish is the stuff that protects your minatures but doesn't make them shiny.
And gloss varnish is what protects your minis and makes em shiny?

I suppose a lot of the sorcerer look is dependent on robes. Notice the guy in your example only comes across as a battlemage because he's casting a fireball.

Maybe you could paint his eyes and throat like they're glowing to help with the magical effect?
>>
>>52562124
Thanks!
What would people suggest, paint on varnish or spray paint?
>>
>>52562470
For general use spray paint. Varnishing by hand is gonna be a pain in the ass.
Had a bad experience with paint on varnish once too.
The varnish seemed to have had a mild solvent in it or something. Anyway fucked up my paintjob basically. Was the regular GW stuff, but a few years back.

It's useful to have a paint on pot handy, though.
Say you spray varnish a big monster in matte and then go back to put gloss on the eyes and mouth for example.
>>
>>52562576
Is spray varnish like primers in that it's toxic?
I live in an area that's constantly cold and that limits my time to prime greatly.

>Is it possible to magnetize the combi weapons from the Calth box without having to chop off the barrels?

It might very well be. Something that small and light could be magnetized by having one side hold the magnet while the other side simply has a metal pin or plate embedded in it - as opposed to needing two magnets.

It would honestly be easier to swap the tips but I think you could put magnets where the power packs line up, they'd have to be pretty small and just the slightest amount of misalignment would make it not work. Magnetizing the whole part would make the seams more noticeable too, might just not be worth the trouble

Man, magnetizing infantry will be a pain in the ass.
I'm doing a custom Skitarii squad for SW:A and I'm having weapons and heads be swappable, plus backpacks and grenades where possible. Is there a way to get out of needing a billion magnets? Just for a basic dude it's 1 for head, 2 for shoulders, 8 for the basic guns, plus all the secondary weapons that need different packs and/or bases.
>>
>>52568658
2 ways I see

1: Strong magnet inside the torso, smaller magnet or maybe even metal bits in the limbs to be added

2: pins
>>
>>52568658
Is this just a result of taking the "What you see is what you get" rule and magnets to the next level? Sounds like way too much work when swappable heads, backpacks and grenades.

>>
>>52568768
Yeah, the upcoming store league went a bit OTT with the WYSIWYG for the Shadow Wars, but they picked the exact game where everything changes after almost every match, so if I was to be totally OTT about things I'd need swappable weapon sights too, even on the pistols. Thinking I'll ignore the grenades thing, because it even says in the rulebook they don't have to be represented on the model, and the sights. Backpacks are only for the one dude who can have either a plasma caliver or an Arc Rifle, so he has 3 to pick from including the regular pack. Alpha isn't getting a swappable head because I found a cool one that goes with the servo-backpack I made for him.

This would be a bunch easier if Skitarii weapons didn't have wires that join to the backpack and bollocks like that. Alpha has a billion one-handed guns, there's three snipers who have different bases, one guy with the other two special weapons and two guys who can carry the enhanced data-tethers. There's only three normal guys, and even they have two different guns.

That won't be a problem as the only one visible when assembled will be on a side that isn't contacted. Basically trying to convert a Recon drone into a Remora (pic isn't mine though, it's from another anon who gave me super-useful measurements. If you're here, thank you again!).

I cut off those small discs on the side of the drone's nubs, glue a magnet on top and then the circle I sliced off cleanly back on top. The wings will be separate, with a magnet attached that clips to the bottom of that little nub, through the plastic. As a bonus, I then attach the burst cannons I built with another magnet on the bottom of the wing magnet, to make a tower-like assembly. Final hurdle will be to figure out how the fuck do I make the seeker missiles, if I'll even bother.

Thinking I might use some FW 30k shoulders/chest for him and give him a power fist and storm bolter.

Should I go with imperial fists or crimson fists colors? I will only ever use him in imperial fists armies.

>>
>>52570508
Yeah, mainly chaos warrior bits, the bottom left looks like the top of a gamesday wolfpriest cruxius, next to that what looks to be an ork arm, then on the right in beige a RT boltgun, next to that an ork shoota and above that something that looks like a RT plasmapistol arm, not sure which model that comes from though.
The other stuff are instruments, weapons and spear arms from Chaos warriors as far as I can tell. The thing above the ork arm is an eldar bit painted silver apparently.

Depends on what era you are going for.
2nd edition old school fists had the helmet stripe and iron skull.
The 4th edition dex had an army with those markings too, but some time after that the codex markings got mixed up somehow in there too.
The modern studio army of Imperial Fists uses the regular codex markings iirc.

Ok so, found a few sticks of resin from an old Scibor purchase, figured the actual seeker missiles are fat oblongs so would be a good base.

Please excuse the horrible MSPaintjob but bear with me. Using an old pen tip to make the cone. Edges might be rounded a bit for ease of assembly but that's about it. Black lines are where I'll carve some details so it's not a completely empty surface.

Advice?

Anyone have tips on winning ebay auctions?
>>
>>52574758
Buy "buy now" items?

Can't say I've really bid on any items that you had to actually compete for. It's always a hassle and days of waiting.
>>
>>52574758
patience.
The next one will come around.
Seems obvious but has to be said. I've seen stuff on ebay go for more than it would have cost if it had been bought directly from GW.

Generally speaking sniping still is probably the most effective tactic. I.e. placing your maximum bid just a few seconds before the auction is over so nobody else can raise theirs.
Only works if the other guy didn't bid higher in the first place though.

Anyway the best way to win is just to be patient.
If you want an item put in an automated search request so ebay notifies you if something comes up.
Then you just bid on that what you want to pay.
After a few tries you might get lucky.

Misspelled items, or thing that are not clearly identified by the person selling it are great finds but they usually go unnoticed. They are hard to find for you too though.

Personally as a rule of thumb I never bid more than half of the regular price on anything. Otherwise what's the point of using ebay?
Unless you are going for bits or limited items.

>>52574910
The simple fact that those models are even on Ebay is a great deal to me, usually theyre just not there, maybe 1 or 2 weapon teams and a lot of people trying to flip the made to order stuff.
I regret not getting weapon teams on made to order.

Ayup lads, finally got my hands on that Rotbringers Sorcerer that we discussed.
He is indeed in resin - a very solid and chunky sculpt so not much cleanup and no air bubbles except the bottom of his robe, also the staff itself is VERY bendy. Rummaged around for some bitz and now I've got a clear concept in mind to move forward. I'll be posting pictures some time next week for input, don't wanna go too overboard with him. He'll have around four extra arms and a servo skull, though.
>>
>>52575576
Reminds me of the colored peg game they give kids at cracker barrel.

Normally Id say black and empty is good unless you have a particularly vibrant and weird color scheme this works with.
>>
>>52575576
I don't think it works well.
Mainly because the gradient you tried to paint doesn't read well.

No idea what the rest of your scheme looks like, but I'd say a bright green, blue or a red would look nice on that helmet.

Does anyone know of any good minis I could make into Grammaton Clerics?
