Update on my lord, here's what I'm hoping to get.
Very much WIP, not even glued in most places. I'm probably going to bulk up below the helmet since, if I don't, it wouldn't fit otherwise. Also, would make him a bit more imposing instead of shoved into a chest box.
Still have mold lines, still wanting suggestions. Like the nipple tassels: yea or nay?

>>52475833
You have some neat ideas going on here but squandered by the fact that you are maintaining a centurion basis instead of simply using the parts that make one big dude.

You could have had proper boot feet, or at least modified the feet to remove the excess stabilizing pads in favor of a more boot-like design. Not assembled the rear inner spacemarine legs so he's not actually a manlet in a suit. Moved the armpit blasters elsewhere so you could have better looking arm mountings and look less like a centurian.

I'm not super grand at greenstuffing, but you two make good points regarding the legs. I'm still far from done, so I might can make the feet more boot-like, and I'll see if I have some way to cover the back of the legs if not build up with greenstuff.
Keeping the nip tassels and pit speakers, though.
>>
>>52476111

you could just use more centurion pads, just cut the knee joint and reposition/shave them down to fit accordingly

One idea is a waist cloak thing. I'd connect it to the bottom of the chest and around the belt, which will also bulk up the hips more. Though, I've never done fabric with GS before, and I assume it's hard.

>>
>>52476719
alright cool, so all you need is to paint them up

if you want to base them, then i suggest buying some elmers glue and sand, easiest basing ever. just use a cheapo brush to spread glue on the base, add sand

go to walmo or something and get some krylon or rustoleum primer, not primer+paint, but just primer (i use rustoleum automotive black primer)

prime those bitches up

get some paints, ACTUAL MINIATURE PAINTS, cant skimp on this part sadly, or they'll look horrendeous. you'll need some brushes as well, i cant make much recommendations but i do use the citidel medium layer for literally everything

grab a few colors for your dudes, and some black and white along with a brown (or black) wash. wet pallets are a godsend and cheap as fuck, literally some tupperware, parchment paper and paper towels. also a cup for cleaning brushes. youtube and google tutorials on how to paint

im probably forgetting shit but ey

Haven't been on here for a while. Can't muster the will to model and paint. Anyone have inspiring words?

>>52472772
Pretty nice, anon. Where'd you get it and how long did it take to get to that point?

>>52472992
I dig it. The blue is really nice and the gold is brighter than the dark, definately-not-bronze look people usually go for. The base, excluding the torches, is a little bland, though. Maybe add small tufts of grass to brighten it up?

>>52473426
That's fuckin' pretty, m8. Skulls look a -liiiittle- dull, but all in all, it looks fantastic. What more do you have planned for the base, might I ask? Looks like it could do with a tad bit of brown here or there. Mid brown or light, given the coloration of the grass.

>>52476531
Oh, no... Has it really been so long...? We're already forgetting the Tomb Kings.

>>52473708
Not the sort of thing I usually comment on, but it's pretty neat, man. The orange car could use some more attention, though. As is it looks a bit too much like... well, a toy that just recently had shit welded onto it, rather than an old, worn car that's had a lot of improvised armor and shit slapped onto it. The truck looks fine. The gold rims are a bit much.

>>52475114
Calm down on the metallic, dude. It looks a little thick, but most importantly it's overwhelming. It makes the model blend into itself, giving the impression it's one big blob of pewter or something. Get some more colors in there- more blacks, yellows, greens and reds- especially on the details, and highlight that metal with something bright like Runefang steel. If 15% of the model was metallic, you might be able to get away with not highlighting it, but there's no avoiding it on Iron Warriors.
>>
>>52476051
I remember when you were still sculpting it and I asked some inane bullshit about if it was going to be hollow or not. I don't think I ever imagined it coming out so wonderfully. Also I'm pretty sure this model contributed to a nightmare I had the other day, where I turned into a plaguebearer. It really is fucking disgusting, and I admire you for making such a beautiful abomination. Are there plans to make the guts glossy, or keeping them dry?

>>52476481
Sable? Synthetic? If you don't mind brushing your models with the tail fur of a Siberian weasel that was probably clubbed to death by Chinese farmers and sold to Englishmen, everyone here will tell you to get Windsor & Newton Series 7 Kolinsky Sable brushes. You'll just get shit on if you skimp out, and if you look around you can find them cheap-ish. Otherwise, I can list some okay synthetics for you.
>>
>>52477517
What's the difference between sable and synthetic?

Synthetic options are more than welcome. Thank you.
>>
>>52477634

Sable is softer and its shape and tip are more durable and resistant to abuse.

Synthetic is much stiffer, whippier, and the bristles themselves are much more durable than sable bristles, however the stiffness leads to easily ruined points and ferrules.

If you go synthetic choose taklon. If the brush is very cheap, it's going to be shit, so just buy the higher end synthetics in a given specific size.

People who prefer more robust brushes for cleaning, or brushes that are stiffer and harder will prefer synthetic over sable, which can be very wimpy and soft.
>>
>>52477634
A sable brush, like the Kolinsky stuff, is generally going to hold more liquid/paint in it. It has to do with how the individual strands of hair are shaped, and the fact that they're supposed to go together and work a certain way. It was grown in such a way that happens to be damn-near perfect for water-based painting needs. It's a bit of an investment, though, but people swear by their Kolinsky sable brushes. So long as you take care of them- clean them, use a soap and conditioner, and don't throw them around like you have brain problems- they'll last you a long while.

Synthetics, on the other hand, tend to be way, WAY cheaper, on account of it not coming from a rare Siberian weasel that is impossible to breed in captivity. There are brushes that come pretty close, Escoda Versatil being a synthetic Kolinsky brush that comes to mind with comparable properties. Most reviews you'll find of this stuff in comparison to the real deal is going to be from artists who make watercolor paintings, so they're using sizes much bigger than we do, but for the most part the downside is that an Escoda Versatil is going to hold less and wont be as "perfect" in shape. Does that matter much to us? In my opinion, no. The most I use is some cheap brushes from the dollar store to slap down primer, basing mud or heavy washing. Otherwise, you probably only need a 3/0 and an 0. That's just me, though.

Other brands I have found to be decent are Princeton Summit, Robert Simmons White Sable, Da Vinci Nova Synthetic Sable for Watercolors and Princeton Series' Heritage synthetic sable brushes.

Obviously you should look into stuff yourself to find what sounds best to you, but hopefully that gives you a start.
>>
>>52476930
Are you saying that this miraculous new invention allows me to thin my paints?
What is this madness?
>>
>>52477757
>but for the most part the downside is that an Escoda Versatil is going to hold less and wont be as "perfect" in shape. Does that matter much to us? In my opinion, no.

It matters even more for us because we use such a small scale. A brush imperfection can be as large as your entire miniature's face, which won't matter to someone painting on a canvas.

The best kolinsky in the world is only $10 to $15 for the sizes that miniatures need (0 to 2) so there's no excuse not to get the best of the best.
>>
>>52477517
Thank you. I have said it before that this mini has been a bit of an experiment an learning process so I'm very hammy how he's turned out. I've tried to keep posting regularly because people asked for updates but to be honest the pictures have been so similar each time it's felt like spamming.

Yes the guts will be glossed, so will his mouth, eyes and horns. Everything else will be matte, same as my plaguebearers.
>>
>>52477717
>>52477757
Thanks, mates.
>>
>>52477841
>there's no excuse not to get the best of the best.
Moral objections. Technically Kolinsky products are banned in the United States, but companies like Windsor & Newton have filled the necessary paperwork to sell them in the states. Maybe that anon has problems with something like that. Maybe he has problems with the fact that the animals are harvested just for brushes. I don't know what kind of person he is, so I told him what the best shit possible is, but also gave him the closest approximates.

Also, it's imperfections relative to Kolinsky sable brushes. It's not like we're talking about Crayola brushes. At worst you're looking at a generic red sable brush's quality.

Should I make counts as rhinos for my noise marines, with bluetooth speakers and plasticard? To bulk up a model 1957 chevy I found, that is too thin. I was thinking of basing it, and giving it "Anti grav" plating instead of wheels, and putting weapons on the sides.

Or should I make proxy counts as rhinos, that make an effort to actually look like a rhino?

Or should I just paint up speakers and use them as drop pods?

This one you can tell that you at least tried to thin your paints but you could stand to make them a bit thinner. If it takes two coats to get your base paint a good solid color then you know it's thin enough. Aside from that he could use some edge highlights and you should go back over the messy areas and clean them up with base colors.

I like your scheme as a whole but I have to say I really don't like the eyes. For something to have that much of a glow it needs to be emitting a lot of light. Think of a white computer screen in a dark room, think of light sabres etc. You've got light sources that are darker than the glow they are emitting and that doesn't look right at all, they should be near white.

All that said, I think just painting the eyes blue/purple and highlighting them to white while removing the glow altogether would make the eyes look more convincingly glowing.

If you dry them out and then seal them properly they don't rot. Scale modelers have been using dried organic materials for decades and as long as you seal them properly, they're fine.

I am trying to convert a ravenwing bike into a biker chaplain and I have a question about the weapons on him.

I want him to have a power fist and this crozius, but I don't think him piloting the bike with both in hand would seem reasonable. If he had the powerfist on the handle it would crush it wouldn't it?

So I can either make the crozius be somewhere on the bike, or the powerfist somewhere on the bike, to be picked up for combat.

My question is this: can powerfists be equipped/unequipped like a sword/bolter or are they pretty much part of the armor? My feeling is the latter.

I want something like this, but I want a powerfist to be visible. If all else fails I am ok with saying "Oh he has a powerfist, even though there isn't one on the model", but I'd like to avoid that.

I suppose an alternative would be to pain the "regular" armor fist in a way to denote it's a power fist?

Power Fists are giant gloves, but they have a power cable attaching them to the armor. A lot of power weapons have cables too. If it has a cable, you can't unequip it in combat.

Crozius seem to always be of the non-cable, built-in power supply form of power weapon which are probably rarer and more valuable.

Hey guys I finished this character a while ago and while I'm generally happy with the paintjob as it's at the level I'm currently capable of painting at I do feel that due to the large segments of flat white armour it comes off as a little bland. Just to be clear, because I know the paintjob doesn't really show it, the armour isn't just flat white, it's been layered with different light greys up from bleach bone with a white highlight. But anyway I was hoping you guys might be able to point me to some simple tricks for weathering and battle damage.

The other thing I wanted an opinion on is how to get a more faded looking yellow on cloth for a Mordheim war-band I'm working on. I was thinking a layer of screaming skull on a white base coat and then building the yellow up with thin layers of the Yriel Yellow wash. No idea if this would work though.

I am actually trying to use the IF relic "Angel of Sacrifice" which what I've done is taken some wings from the devastator cherub and put them on a crozius from the B@C box. I'm not sure if that is the correct method but I think it looks cool.

If I can't get the PF on the bike handle looking good, I might put the crozius on the side of the bike like a spare lance or something you'd imagine on heavy cavalry

While it can be hard, this anon is right for the most part.
It's shitty to paint when you don't want to, but not doing anything and just chilling in your melancholy is even worse. I might be projecting more than a little bit since I suffer fucking hard as hell from depression, but I can sure as hell tell you that "waiting till you feel better" to do things is the wrong way not only to get things done but to feel better in general. It's gonna be shitty for a while while you start, granted, but as you get more and more into it (be it painting or anything else) you'll feel a lot better than you would doing nothing.

If you aren't depressed most of the time you're either a naive moron, a kid or manchild, or someone who lucked out and was born rich/became rich/found a beautiful lover/etc.

For the average person, life fucking sucks. I don't suffer from depression, but every fucking day I wake up and think "Not this fucking shit again." I would rather be dead or asleep than waking up in the mornings and going to work. Things like painting miniatures is literally all I have to look forward to to keep myself going.

>If you aren't depressed most of the time you're either a naive moron,
Well I'm not an idiot I guess, that's comforting.
I have a season component to my Bipolar disorder and thus I get severely depress from the end of Summer all the way to the start of Spring. I fucking hate Spring and Summer though so even then I feel shitty, but not depression-shitty.
I really miss being happy and being able to enjoy things. Deep inside I'm a really fucking bubbly person, but fucking god damn it's hard to let that side come to light with this shit. I just want to make people feel happy again instead of being the cynical prick I am when I'm depressed. I don't want to be the villain anymore.

>Things like painting miniatures is literally all I have to look forward to to keep myself going.
Least you have that. I fucking hate painting. Actually making the models is 10/10 my fucking jam though. I'm kind of glad no one in my meta cares about me fielding grey tide or else I'd probably never play. I really need to buckle down this summer and get my guys ship-shape. I want to proud of my little lads.

>>52483668
>get over yourself
I tell myself this a lot, but it doesn't really help much. Just makes me feel worse about myself knowing I'm the problem.

Ok, so I think I have 3 options here. I can do option 1 take the parts in the red box and either GS or just paint it to look like a power fist.

Option 2 (in blue) is to cut the handlebar in a way that I can fit that fist "onto" the handlebar, and cut the arm so that it fits onto the shoulder of the ravenwing bike from the first box.

Option 3 is to do the same thing from 2, but with the fist I already have cut and magnetized.

I think 2 looks the best, even though that is probably the most work.

Thoughts? To recap, take the closed-fist power fist, insert it in between the cut up handlebar to make it look like it's grasping it, cut it at the elbow and attach it to the ravenwing shoulder.

To illustrate, cut at the orange lines on the bike handlebar and attach at the orange lines on the fist, I put a smaller orange line further in, in case the fist is just too wide and would make it look absurd.

So for the new Shadow War - Armageddon thing, my shop is running a league where everything has to be 100% WYSIWG, down to the gun mods, visors and knives. I have some spare GSC upgrade knives and Guardsmen kraks, but I play Skitarii.
I bought a box to specifically prepare just for SW:A, and I want to magnetize all the weapons and heads. Anyone have a good way to do the weapons that have one arm seperate from the gun, as well as the grenades and knives? I suppose I could give them all a "belt slot" and have the knife go there and can be swapped for the Krak Grenades or Frag grenades that come with a knife?
Not magnetized infantry before, and I have a week to get them ready.

for the plastic cadians, it's by squad

infantry units have a three digit number
command units have NumberSkullNumber
00X numbers are reserved for veteran squads (kasrkin included)

the regimental insignia is the army-wide thing (in the standard case that'd be the cadian gate insignia)

Old way used two numbers, one regimental number (ie, the cadian 117th), and one representing which platoon/company they were part of.

We need more of this shit to give armies really autistic and accurate details and minutiae. Space Marines have a lot of these with their symbols and awards, and Tyranids and Tau even have little bits that they can glue on the model. They should do more for all races.
>>
>>52486015
Do the belt slot. It's very multifunctional.

For climbing gear, you could maybe magnetize something with a spool and hook. It doesnt look amazing, but if you need wysiwyg in one week from now it's the easiest option.
>>
>>52487931
Well, I need WYSIWYG. I don't necessarily need painted WYSIWYG
I have a few basic bitch Rangers around anyway. Big thing will be the belts, since the heads, arms and sometimes backpack seem simple enough.

Maybe I could make some kind of clip that went on the end of one of the backpack cables instead of the censer, or replace the antenna with that spool. I'll have a look. I can sort out all the legs and bases in the meantime at least, barring Special Weapons Guy who needs magnet feet to switch to Arquebus mode.

There's just not enough going on here. I see you already put the transfers on - I think a red helm or some other bright color might have been a better call. Are you using ardcoat or other gloss to seal on the transfer? Use lahmian medium or something matte.

Best thing you could do is paint those soulstones, I think they'll break up the monotony. GW has a good tutorial for their gemstone paints or for spirit stones in general.

I don't really know exactly why, but the brass looks off or out of place. Highlight or a layer might help. You probably need another edge highlight on the black bits too. This is not a bad start. Watch your edge highlighting because on some areas like the left model's backpack, it's a bit wide. Subtle is best.

Very nice, clean paint job with subtle weathering

A couple of suggestions:
The treads' colors are flat, looks like a base coat of silver plus nuln oil, consider some highlighting and/or drybrushing
Sloppy highlighting on the heavy bolter, it sticks out quite a lot, thin out the edge highlighting with the base coat and fix up the brown parts
Add some simple highlighting on the red lense on the missile launcher

Like your son.

it was a bad joke about how he thinks i don't smell the proof of him jacking it in there

Yes, and - depending on how much raw power you wish to seize from the dark realms for the purpose of miniature modeling - maybe also your son.

Who the fuck are you using wood? Are you retarded? You use plasticard. There is nothing you can do to make that wood look like aything but wood so 10/10 you just wasted a shit load of money.

What do you expect from recastfags

They make unboxing posts and then don't even give you a clear shot of the components, just a fucking shipping box and some bubblewrap.

Balsa wood is a legitimate replacement for plasticard. It can be useful to have a bunch of thin wood around. Just not in this situation.

I wanted to do an Ork-easter-egg for mini-competition at my LGS, but I've ended up with junk orky drop pod.
Any tips how to pimp it up? I got some plasticard leftovers and 2 small plates of textured plasticard with diamond pattern.

I really love my Iron Wolf version of Grimnar. Simple kitbash really and a few years ago now, but still one of the favs in my collection.

I basecoated some dryads with gw white undercoat spray. but the result is kinda gray-ish?

is it supposed to be like this, or do I have to really drench the models for it to be clear white?

I cant let you Anon. I have worked meticulously to restore nine of these sodding shits from the abyss of the emperors rest, and I would be damned to not share with you what I've learned. The feet are by far the weakest parts of these old kits, the ones with the 1 part legs. They will cave eventually, but if you craft new ones by making a stamp press after cleaning off a volunteer foot and use miliput for the mold and the right mixture of greenstuff, for the feet themselves you can duplicate destroyed toes and entire feet sections from the walker and pin them in place. Wip is the place of miracles my boy. Don't you ever give up.
