I used oyumaru and gs to cast spare bits for base decorations, and it works pretty well.

It's a bit of a hassle to prevent bubbles and defects, but it's possible. I found it really helps if you heat up your gs in a cup of hot water before you knead it and cast with it. It flows much easier.

Greetings /wip/
I come seeking guidance with the use of washes. I have some vallejo black wash and an old ass pot of badab black but both make the fatigues on my troopers look like a shop rag after an oil change. Is there a wash that is more optimal for such a light grey?

You want a regular acrylic medium like GW's Lahmian or Vallejo Matte Medium, then thin your paint down with medium and water until it has the right consistency to flow into the recesses. The medium helps it stay actually like paint at that consistency instead of separating, as it would with just water.
>>
Is it true that you can use Lahmian Medium as a brush on matte varnish? Anyone can confirm?

More of a satin but it does dull down gloss varnish and decal shine.

Hey /wip/, I need some advice.

I'm going to sit down and paint my Visarch and I'm planning to go for a Red/Green contrast between the armour and blade/gems. See the Blood elf for the shade of red and green I'm planning to go for.

However, I'm kind of stuck on what colours to paint the cloak, belt/loincloth and fur. I'm considering some shade of white/offwhite for a similar contrast between the red armor and flesh that the blood elf has, but I'm not sure that'd work with cloth and it leaves me still guessing as to what I'd paint the fur. So, what'd you suggest?

And secondly, what greens would you suggest I use to get that kind of green colour the blades and gems have?
>>
>>52173780
I think you should go with gold as your colour for the cloth and fur, I remember a lot of that around last time I went to silvermoon

Dark violet's always an option. I seem to remember that being an accent colour on blood elf shit.

Alternatively a darker red, if you want to take full inspiration from your right image. With an orange for the fur, mimicking the blood elf hair.

>>
>>52173898
>Dark violet's always an option. I seem to remember that being an accent colour on blood elf shit.
I've seen several other dudes do that on Visarch's cloak when I've googled around for inspiration. I'm not entirely sure I like it, but that might be those guys execution. I'll definitely consider it, though I'd probably not go for the orange/gold-yellow fur you suggested if I go for a violet cloak.

>Alternatively a darker red, if you want to take full inspiration from your right image
Doesn't that run the risk of being too much red? I can see it working, since I'm going to go Mephiston Red->Nuln Oil->Evil Suns Scarlet edge highlight->Wild rider red extreme highlight for the armour. So, basecoating the cloak in Khorne red or a similar red shade and washing it with nuln oil might work.

>With an orange for the fur, mimicking the blood elf hair.
Might work. Though it might detract from the model since it covers a lot more area compared to the orange/gold hair of the blood elf. Though I'm considering something similar to Duncans Visarch fur video, but going to white rather than grey for the fur.
>>
>>52174099
>Doesn't that run the risk of being too much red?
Nah. That's what the gems, sword, straps and tabard are there to prevent.

>it might detract from the model
Provided you keep your green real bright, that probably won't be a huge problem. But bone/off-white fur could also work.
>>
how terrible are cans of propellant if I wanna hold off for a bit on buying a compressor?
>>
>>52174150
>Nah. That's what the gems, sword, straps and tabard are there to prevent.
True enough. Would you suggest keeping the tabard off-wite like the studio model?

>But bone/off-white fur could also work.
I'm also considering of copying the fur this guy pulled for his Visarch.
>>
>>52174209
>Would you suggest keeping the tabard off-wite like the studio model?
yes

>I'm also considering of copying the fur this guy pulled for his Visarch.
The blue tint might be overkill with the red/green contrast already present.
>>
>>52174279
>The blue tint might be overkill with the red/green contrast already present.
Depends a bit on the colour of the cloak, doesn't it? With dark violet it could help make the transition less glaring, wouldn't it? Though I agree with its potential for overkill if I go for a red cloak.
>>
>>52174338
>With dark violet it could help make the transition less glaring, wouldn't it?
Nah, if the rest of the mini was cool colours maybe, but we're talking bright reds here. You want warm colours to bridge the gap.
>>
I've decided I want to convert a Genetor Mechanicum army, got a fairly good idea of what I want to have escorting my Whale-stormbird when I find the right model to convert from, but I'm stumped for a secondary colour. Anyone have any suggestions for a colour scheme for the Genetors? Was thinking bronze armour for the big monsters and Magi (Duncan's SoS tutorial plus Nikhilakh oxide, I think) what would look suitably mad science along with the creepy green syringes and pale flesh? Need a secondary colour for Secutarii and Magos robes and vehicle armour, since having metallic bronze plating with metallic dark metal trim is slightly metal overload as far as I can tell.
>>
>>52174370
>You want warm colours to bridge the gap.
Hmmm, true. So a warm off-white or the gold blonde on the Blood elf for the fur would probably work best then.

What do you think of doing the same transition like on the Visarch I posted, but going from blonde/gold-orange to white for the fur?
>>
>>52174423
That'd look pretty cool, I think.

Yeah, just now realised it'd be similar to the fur on the White Lions of Chrace, pic related. And since I chopped off the spike on the Visarchs helmet and replaced it with a top-knot from the White Lions kit it'd work pretty well I think.

>>52172101
One idea I had for a forge board was to cross an entire board with a thick wall that's clearly been hit by bombardment - possibly capped at each end by a tall 'framing' piece that's very tall and implied to continue upwards, representing where the building is intact - and have one side be the inside of a forge, with the idea that the battle is over the breach in the wall - the defenders are either securing it or are about to spill from the factory like a disturbed nest of ants, while the attackers are trying to storm the breach.

Any defences should be extremely makeshift, and depending on how much of the board you want to be martian soil it might even be a race for the breach - one side running across the factory floor (or possibly hanging back in a load of machinery and shooting whoever gets to the breach), one side trying to scramble up and enter the factory.

Other battlefield-dividing features are also good: rivers of molten metal with bridges, big vats, pipelines, raised assembly lines - stuff that can be hidden behind, fought over, used for tactical advantage.

Waste heaps might be useful, just a big pile of dirt or scraps, and a very re-usable terrain piece. If you want something involved consider an archaeological site or a large admech vehicle

Large machines like generators, fuel tanks, pumps, cranes (good for adding height) and simple storage units are good for breaking up the battlefield - too many wars are fought on parking lots and croquet lawns
>>
>>52175391

As I mentioned before in earlier posts, its flat. Yes, I can see you painted it in dark gritty colors but its still not justifying it to be grimderp, its just flat!

You need to go back and start working on your highlight game. Hell, even working on your drybrush to save time could lift this model up a few notch. But base + wash does not justify "finished" in my book.

Cool model though, and you have a solid start to make something out of it.

>>52175760
not every single part needs to be primed, you can hand paint in any missed areas with the same colour paint. This is standard.

Isn't that about how thin I want it if I'm making a wash? That's about the thickness I went with when using abaddon black on the grey pants/cloth areas.

Every bit of paint was applied with a fine detail brush that was damp, with barely the tip having paint on it.
>>
>>52177385
This kit is one of the most flavourful sets GW has ever released in terms of cool characters in it in my opinion. Do them honour, anon
>>
>>52177429
You're a new painter so you have no idea how to control paint yet. Paint thickness varies by job but the full fat milk consistence is generally where you want to be for most jobs.

You don't put just the tip in the paint, you want to have some paint in the brush so you're not putting dots all over the model but smooth strokes. You know those shitty clip art pictures of half a brush splonged with paint? That's pretty much what you want.

I finally got around to painting my first Rhino, for the Raven Guard.

How did I do?

Huh.
I've seen examples of using a soft pencil to do outlines and going over that with paint, but not crayon. Was the paint not sticking to the wax a problem?

It's some fancy spanish crayon of room mate's I found laying around. Very soft but otherwise just like any good quality crayon.

It says here it's made for glass and plastic and shit, so I figured it would do - and it did wonderfully. Didn't feel any difference when applying paint over it.

>>
>>52178414

Looks like these particular models weren't primed. Otherwise, I just let them soak in a bucket of simple green for 24 hours, then scrub them with an old toothbrush. Paint comes right off. There will be spots where the brush can't reach, I use a toothpick to get those.
>>
>>52177385

So it seems the person I bought these from had a couple of models mislabeled. I found Scope in a box of random snipers, and Hero was listed as a Lord Commissar. So now I've got all the Chancers complete, but that leaves 2 models he'd listed as Last Chancers, and I'm confused. One is a Catachan with boltgun and power fist, on the tab for the base it's labeled "GUARD". Probably just a regular guardsman, I'm guessing. The other one though... it's a female Catachan with a grenade launcher. Haven't managed to pop her loose from the base yet so I don't know what the tab says, but does anyone have any ideas?

So, I'm trying to find a model for my D&D Gnomish Necromancer. Pic related was my first thought, but it's a pain to find in Germany. Every online store I found him at, he was out of stock, and if I order from the US the shipping will cost 3 times the model's cost.

Any other good suggestions for models I could use?
He's ugly as all fuck and an undead himself, so the model's face shouldn't be too pretty looking.

just ask battlefield berlin to order it for you with their next restock.

That aside the guy doesn't really strike me as a gnome. In a pinch you could always just use a GW goblin shaman and put a human head on that. At least you should be able to find GW minis easy enough.
>>
how grey are your armies? I find Im always behind with me getting new models and going back and improving on old ones ive scraped 2 wraithlords and a venom because of my need to be a better painter
>>
>>52183911
The only grey things I have lying around right now are my WIP Archmagos and the remaining stuff from the Eradication Cohort that's still on its sprues as well as a full sprue'd Skitarii unit.
Oh, and Belisarius Cawl.

That collection will probably remain grey for a while longer because I just ordered the DA Armored Assault box and a pack of Scouts for my Black Templars since I didn't touch them in the last 5 months and feel like getting BLACKED again after all this time with my white fucking machines.
>>
>>52181105

Ok so far, but you need to go back and re-shade it so that the shade is in the right place (around the hatch is a good example). And for god sake, don't just airbrush it and call it a day, go through with it and give it an edge highlight, a pin-wash, weathering, you know, the works! But your on a first step of having a great looking model here anon.
>>
So I have a bunch of spare Scions arms legs and heads sitting around since I used their torso's for a conversion, and I've been trying to figure out something to do with them. Someone showed me a picture of a Scion with what they claimed was just a regular cadian's torso, and It looked pretty decent, but when I went and looked at the cadian models today in the shot it looked different than the picture. Can someone perhaps provide a picture of this conversion before the arms get put on? Or at least tell me how you think it would work/look before I go and pop for the plastic to try it?

>I think highlights and shades is a term for cartoony

Yes, you used that argument before. But looking at that illustration is a perfect example of proofing your theory wrong. Its a limited pallet looking at it first glance, but when you go deeper you can see the full range of colors used to create the effect the artist was looking for. This picture is not only displaying great zenithal highlights, it also use that highlight to define the muscularity of the beast perfectly! It also shows us that this beast has spots on the skin, as well as darker skin towards the ends of his limbs. You can really see the veins pop, contrast with well placed shade.

So despite being on a limited pallet, this artist has created a beast with depth! It has a natural light, combined with shades and highlights that makes its features stand out. And when we look close, we discover new aspects of this creature being revealed! This picture is a great example of grimdark.

Im not trying to be mean, I'm just saying, your model is looking flat, you can accept it and try to do better, or you can keep being in denial.
>>
>>52177066

Alright anons, I fell for the meme and got some resin miniatures. How can I avoid death by cancer? Is there anything special I must do before priming? Will regular plastic glue be enough to glue it together?
>>
>>52191461
Forgeworld recommends a face mask.
GW recommends you treat them like plastic or metal.
/tg/ will tell you that wear level 1 NBC gear will not protect you.

All you have to do is wash them and wear something over your mouth and nose. That shit irritates my lungs everytime.
>>
>>52191461
>How can I avoid death by cancer?
If you're doing any significant amount of filing then you should wear a mask. The cheap paper masks work just fine. If it's only a tiny bit of filing (e.g. scraping off regular sized mold lines on a small figure) then holding your breath while doing it will probably work just fine though.

>Is there anything special I must do before priming?
You absolutely must wash resin minis with soap and water before priming them. The mold release agents used to get resin minis out of their molds are usually highly hydrophobic and so if you try to prime on top of that it will run like mad.

>Will regular plastic glue be enough to glue it together?
Plastic glue/cement will do nothing to resin minis. Resin is not plastic; plastic glue works by chemically melting the two pieces together to form a weld, but resin won't react the same way. You are going to want superglue.
>>
>>52191461
Couple things

A.) Dont breath in the dust since its bad for you if you need to remove mold lines

B.) If a part is bent throw it in near boiling water for a bit and re shape it, left a model in my car once on a summer day and it got all out of shape but the water fixed it

C.) WADH THE MODEL, i typically dont wash plastivs but they use a shit ton of release agent for resin and it gets in the way of glue and paint

D.) Any glue is fine, but i prefer good o'l krazy glue or army painters glue.
