Worried that having the bike the same colour as her armour just leaves the model with not enough contrast.

Anyone got any pictures of Spess Shurks an anon posted a while back.
I remember he posted them for one of those "show how much you improved" posts. One of them was in Mark 7 armor and had very smooth white paint on the front of the faceplate.

They looked really good and I wanted to copy his scheme for a fun little one off squad I was planning to make.

>>52114079
Either are fine, but Word Bearers are close to my heart since their color scheme is so similar to Flesh Tearers.

Anyone know a good replacement for imperial guard arms, im planning on converting guardsmen to cultists but finding melee arms is tough. i know of the forgeworld ones and people use maruader arms but i think the big muscles dont suit them. any ideas?
>>
>>52114283
chaos cultist arms?
>>
>>52114297
they are shitty push to fit and just bad molds in general otherwise i would just go with regular cultist
>>
>>52113509
Lotta work and parts put into a trolling mini but it looks good, weathering and using different tones of shade should solve the contrast issue for you though.
>>
>>52114283
Victoria Miniatures has bare arms and prisoner arms with rags and chains around them.
Those might do the trick for yo, though she doesn't have that many melee arms.

You could also try to bits buy some beastmen arms or buy a boy of frostgrave soldiers/cultists/barbarians. The boxes are packed with bits and you can even use the crossbow arms with a bit of converting with lasguns. Most loadouts are melee weapons for obvious reasons though (Frostgrave being a game without black powder weapons).
And the bodies and heads are 1:1 compatible with GW stuff.

Is your masking not helping? Like is it bleeding through or something? I normally use blue painter's tape and that gives me a crisp line every time

Your motivation is a plastic tub and a half a container of superclean.

Give it a smooth recoat of primer and start over. The motivation is to make it look better than what it looks like right now. Slap that big ol' picture over your workstation right next to your mandatory Duncan photo and get to work. The detail and smoothness you will recover by stripping will be worth it in the long run.

Hey tg, haven't done any modeling or painting with warhammer since I was a kid, picked up some cheapo soldiers to test on, what went wrong? I thinned my paints and tried to layer and highlight properly, but it just looks like arse, any tips on where I cocked up would be appreciated
>>
>>52114705
Sorry about the orientation, my bad
>>
>>52114589
Stripping isn't necessary until it starts to become thick (it's just messy atm), and it's already been stripped twice so it's slowly becoming damaged (GW black primer melts into the plastic causing repriming to permanently increase thickness, the more you know)
I can probably recover it, once I finish the tank excluding details and weathering I'll post it here and decide then if it's worth stripping.
>>52114520
Yeah it bled through and barely stuck to the tank. I used generic white masking tape though. Might try that stuff on my next tank
>>
>>52114714
The more egregious fault was probably the filesize, have mercy on poor rural posters like me.
>>
>>52114714
Light paints can be tricky. They tend to crumb up and give you that kind of chalky look. The way I get around that is putting on one last, ultra thin finishing layer and that tends to smooth it out. Also maybe it's just the lighting, but it looks like you're lacking shading too. (Despite those pots of shade in the background) All of the colors just look flat.
>>
>>52114810
I used shade but it made the model look a little messy, so I "neatened" up all the blotchy splodges, should I just shade carefully into the creases rather than just go wild?
>>
>>52114535

/wip/ I beseech thee

I am in search of a Honored Imperium model. I am hoping to find the statute of the space marine.

My father is on a 2-8 month clock before cancer kills him. I want to find and paint one of the statues in his honor and memory and hope to showcase it to him before his death.

If it's hollow, I hope to use it as an urn for a portion of his ashes so he may eternally watch over his son upon the field of battle.

There are a few pewter Amazon minis I could point you to, but I think you might have the best success in a conversion from picking up something like a Dark Eldar Wyches kit, removing the edgy spikes to taste, and replacing the elf heads with some female human heads from a third party company.

https://www.forlornhopegames.com/collections/28mm-fantasy/amazons
https://us-store.warlordgames.com/products/amazon-1 (there's a couple more sets of them on here, this is probably your best option)

Only the last one there is bikini-wearing amazons. The big struggle with getting cheesecake minis is that they're usually only found as single specialty minis in pewter or some other material with a low setup cost, and often near-impossible to convert thanks to it, which was why I recommended the Wyches. Say what you will about GW, but their plastic kits are super easy to work with.

alternative option would be the high elf shadow warrior helmets, but all the bits places seem to be out of them

A fun little model to paint. I went a little off the beaten path with the mask -- I was going for some sort of otherworldly valkyrie style thing, some sort of crazy nordic warrior woman. Most people paint this model as some sort of celt, which I can see, but for me something about her just said nordic so I went whole hog on the blue mask and golden hair.

Reporting because I wasn't able to ask the anons kind enough to give me feedback to elaborate.

First run with an airbrush, this is much harder than I thought. I tried my hand at zenithal highlighting and light blending but the white came out powdery and dull instead of deep and bright.

Two anons said I needed to glaze everything to bring the colors together and that I was using the wrong colors, but I'm not 100% where it was I went wrong in my color choice.
>>
>>52115954

They told you to glaze because a blue glaze will saturate your blue, making it brighter. It will also tint your white highlights blue. Your problem right now is your dark blues are very dark, your white is not even blue, and you have very little mid-tone blue which is what's going to give you a vibrant blue.

So you're what, 40% too dark of a blue, 40% glaring white highlights, and 20% blue? Your model needs to be like at least 60% bright blue if you want a bright airbrushed model.

You COULD glaze it if you want. It's an easy all over process that will also wash the crevices for you.

What I would do, however, is either do all your shading and highlighting work with black and white BEFORE spraying blue, as most airbrushers do, OR simply cut back on the white highlights and use more bright blues. Your last highlight that's sprayed should be a light blue. Pure white highlights should never be airbrushed on unless it's a very tiny spritz on the very top tips of the model. If you ever bring your highlights all the way up to pure white, you're going to be doing it with a paintbrush on the edge highlights. White as a zenithal is NEVER the final product, it is a pre-shade.
>>
>>52115954
I'm concerned about what you're holding on to the mini with (it appears to be nothing). How is your thumb & index finger not acting as a mask?

It's actually pretty easy math.

>Marines charge in, mulch whatever bodies they can reach
>Pile in
>Sergeants/Commissar move up their 3 inches
>Take apart marines because they actually get more attacks than the vets do
It's hilarious really. Plus if they mulch enough to break the combat, that means they're literally stuck in the middle of 100+ shots about to blast them off the table.

(but it does sound like corrosion damage, a side effect of stripping for too long) Also there are a multitude of sprays aside from GW chaos, the most pleb of primers. Maybe thats your issue right there, because from where im standing im telling myself it cant possibly look that thick on the model unless it was hellishly overprimed, which stripping will make quick work of. If it really is corrosion dmg then god help you.

Ether way, if you continue down your same course, good luck, because masking off of paint that thick would give me the heebie-jibbies. I figure i'll see the results sooner or later seince you post alot. GL

Adding the final touch-ups to this dude. Haven't been actively painting anything for about two years, and I noticed that even when thinned, some of my old paints have a bit of clumps in them, as shown on the pic on the part near the shoulder and other areas. Probably doesn't help my place's pretty dusty even with constant cleaning up. Anyways, comment, please. Have I gone a bit too heavy with the "weathering"?

I can't use sprays, aerosol is scary to work with and I don't want to get cancer again.
My roommate already primes my model and it's a chore to get that done
>>
So do people use the Duncan method and basecoat/wash/shade/highlight everything of one colour before starting on the next one, or do every basecoat, then every wash, etc, etc?
>>
>>52121984
The former. It is quite difficult to paint large elements (like armor, etc.) without accidentally painting over details.

If you do all elements at once you need to be really fucking precise.
>>
>>52121866
With a proper mask and spraying outdoors, you risk about as much spraying aerosols as when you're breathing air.

>>52121984
Depends on the model. Some models it's just more efficient to do it the Duncan way, but on others I have no idea why he'd ever do it that way
(Do the gold first on thousand sons springs to mind)
>>
>>52121984
Not even trying to be a dick, but really, it depends. Generally speaking, if I'm going to wash two contiguous areas with the same wash then I will do both basecoats and wash them both at the same time. Other times I will do one section at a time. Sometimes I don't even wash because I don't think it's something which should always always be done.

Anon your choice of paints is fine, the problem is, it seems, when you're applying your higlights youre putting them everywhere, instead of just the raised ares, which is basically just coating it again.

You should try applying every brighter layer on the RAISED areas, like in the pic related (the upper parts of the shoulder pads, the helmet, backpack vents, knees, etc), and finishing it all of with an edge highlight.
For said edge highlight I recommend just adding some white to your yellow.

I tend to do basecoats, washes and then the first layer of each colour seperately, then touch everything up before doing all the highlights at once. Thanks man. I'm thinking about stripping this guy and re-priming him directly in Zandri dust, as I initially (and stupidly) went with a couple of steel legion drab before layering zandri 2-3 times. Luckily it hasn't clogged any detail, and just looks pasty and clumpy.
The base's sand is basically Tausept Ochre washed heavily with old GW Brown Ink and drybrushed with another pass of Tausept Ochre then a lighter pass of Ushabti Bone. I was rather unsure initially of what kind of scheme to go with it, so it too has been layered with quite a few passes of other colours before settling on this. If I were to redo the base, which one of these would look better?

1- Dark grey with light grey drybrush
2- Light grey with sand colour drybrush
3- Dark grey with light grey drybrush with a lighter sand colour drybrush

So treat Cadian as your mid-tone of unhighlighted, unshaded flesh, and paint accordingly. You can build up to it via Bugmans if that helps, but remember that you could be covering all of the Bugman's and it will still be making a difference.

You can try using a light wash of Reikland to give depth and then relayer your Cadian everywhere but the recesses. Consider shifting to Cadian / Reikland / Kislev as well, as you're obviously going for a lighter flesh tone.

Pic related uses Bugman, Reikland and Cadian, but also goes up into Kislev and Flayed One for the top highlights, in case that's closer to what you're after?

The color works in tandem with the psychic hood and weapon.

Note the biker has neither, either.

I'm the anon that was painting the lord of change (it's virtually finished now), would the new bloodthirster model be easier to paint than the new lord of change was?
>>

I imagine if you followed the Duncan tutorial it would be a similar experience.
>>

They don't have to be blue, they just have to be obviously a librarian. Usually this means a force hood, staff, wavy patterns on axe or sword, and tabards, as you can find on all librarian models.

Just looking at the Lord of Change I can say the Bthirster is way easier

Im having a problem with my wet palettes guys. When I water down my paint a lot it soaks through. I'm pretty sure I'm using the right paper, its matte on one side and waxy on the other. If it's the right paper should the paint stay on top of the paper not matter how watered down it is?

How well does resin survive the cold?

I have a Chinaman order coming Monday and not Tuesday as expected, which means it'll be sitting in 35-40 degree weather for 2-6 hours till I can get home to bring it inside. Will it be fine? (And if not, will it be fine after it heats back up?) I've worked with resin plenty before, it's just never been out in the cold. Never know if there's some fragility issue or something.
>>
>>52127040
Mil consistency. I always thought it was some bullshit measurement until it was explained by some guy with a test tube.

Water goes down the tube without a trace.
Milk goes down the tube slightly slower and leaves a fait trace behind. That's how your paint should behave.

Don't forget to not overload your brush. To make sure you don't, lightly make the side of your brush a towel, don't rub it, just slightly touch i so that humidity goes in the towel thanks to capilarity. Turn it over and do it on the other side, and you should have the paint you want.
>>
>>52127040
I usually do it as one dab of paint from the pot, two dabs of water mixed in. remember, two thin coats is always better than one thick coat, so it doesn't matter if the primer shows through after the first coat.
>>
>>52127079
resin should be fine with a little cold, there's a reason dismantling resin models glued with superglue is done in the freezer. A few hours in cold weather above freezing won't do anything.

>>
>>52127216
since it can handle a few hours at -5 F with no trouble what-so-ever (in said freezer), I imagine a few hours at 25 won't do much to it either.
Hot weather is far more of a hazard than cold.

I probably didn't put enough snow on the plough then, I assumed when a tank track spins it doesn't actually cause the dirt to spread out violently on the top of tank because newtons first law of forces and thus stay more concentration on the bottom.
>>
>>52130375
They both look nice dude, and I really think the second guy shows an improvement with the highlight placement.

Consider that on a satin surface like skin, you want highlights that are shaped like a smaller version of the muscle as viewed from above- if viewing from above you see most of the delts, paint a highlight in that shape of the muscle. If you have an hour to spare, https://youtu.be/Km1-vU2-pbk is some really good content.
>>

Looks realistic to me. Was a tracked vehicle crewman. When we'd go out when it was above freezing the fields would be soggy and the thing would get covered in mud, and then plenty of times overnight it all froze and had a fresh snowfall. It would look like this as the caked/frozen mud broke off and snow began to collect. I could see some frozen ground being pulled up with the snow on the dozer and on the tracks themselves, but the dirt would never stain up the sides of the vehicle after the freeze and snow/before the thaw though.
>>
>>52131845
You're pretty much correct about this. Mud only carries high up the side of the vehicle when you're on terrain that makes you bounce around and splash a bit; otherwise your amount is pretty realistic. In fact, you're more likely to get mud and dust and such absolutely covering the front of the vehicle from the roostertail of the vehicle in front of yours.

When doing Marines in sub-assembles, do you do the backpacks with the torso/leg combo, or do them alone?

I am a little crazy but for basic tactical marines I do

Torso +legs+head

Arm+pauldron

Arm+pauldron+bolter

Power pack

I magnetize anything that isn't a basic marine
