>>51793072 (You)
Started working on this palanquin idea as well, because I can't just focus on one model at a time (I don't even have one fully built marine for my army yet, of the 60 I bought a while back).

Can't get any good lightning for the webcam though. But this is the removable lords base, and the "flat" layer of the palanquin, which is basically part of a temple being carried around.
Around the lords base I'll build upwards so that it's on the same height as the base, just blocked out the shape of the base first. Then I'll add on some pillars and such.
After that I'll start bulking out the bottom a bit, and attach it to the "main base", and the carriers that I'm also working on.

>>
>>51795574
Youre paints are too thick so your details are clogged.
You should strip it, because its not good looking unfortunately.. Depth means actually dimension to the model, it looks very flat as there is no shading at all. A simple nuln oil wash could fix them in the crevices.

Clever, got a little laugh out of me. I might save that if they put out some new Tzeentchian heroes for the new Warhammer Quest coming out.

I was thinking for the Aspiring Deathbringer (guy on the left with the ax) I might cut the blade of the ax off and replace it with a saw blade to look kinda like the saw cleaver from Bloodborne, but I feel like that may not make him stand out quite enough.

don't know if it will be any use to you but I've been slowly making a tutorial on each model. I'm just finishing up the player character tutorial now and it's a bit late (usually do Friday uploads). They're at Paintingvideogames.com if you want to take a look.

Keep posting your work, it's cool to see others painting Doom stuff. Maybe try thinning your paints a little more and do a bit of clean up once the models done. You have red on the collar there.

Hello, /tg/, I usually lurk, been following the hobby but haven't worked on anything serious In a little over a decade. Still needs work, but you guys give good advice, thoughts?
>>
>>51801684

Why does he look like he's covered is soot?
>>
>>51801684
drill bolters. skulls and parchment looks bad, like you just washed the layer multiple times and didn't highlight at all. Black also looks pretty plain in the center, and things like the lenses on the sides of the helmet could use highlighting as well. (and honestly everything could just use more highlighting)
>>
>>51801617
>taking the bait

cmon anon, let's not
>>
>>51801684

I kinda like it. Still needs a bit of polish of course.
Overall the mini is quite dark and contrast is missing. You should drill the stormbolter's barrels and give the casing a red edge highlight.

The skulls need another layer of bone tone. Especially the helmet. The headlights on the armor need some special effects.
I like the sooty scrolls and the base btw.

it's recognizable.
I don't expect warriors of khorne to have the patience to be great craftsmen or artisans anyway.
They probably frequently have to ragequit and kick a puppy before they can finish what they were doing.

>>51801788

>>
>>51801818
Ya it's recognizable on this pic, what about table top distance?

You could resharpen the edges with fleshtone, and put lines in the tattoo using a brighter red to make it pop.
Freehand, especially on fleshtone, should never consist of only one color.

I'm trying to use GreenStuffWorld's textured rollers to make bases for my Skitarii. It was fine with my Vanguard, but now I'm trying to base my Onager my greenstuff is way, way too hard to work properly (I managed to pull my nail up some trying to set it). More wip, still need to clean up the gold and metal bits, need to paint the skulls, need to paint the cables and wires too.
>>
How do I paint gold, my dudes?
>>
>>51801121
Go to ebay and buy a hellhammer turret
Bam.
>>
>>51803250
What sort of gold, bro? Shiny, Sigmarine gold? Old, burnished gold?

The story though, is a metallic gold paint (often over a brown undercoat for better coverage), something to make your shadows darker and less reflective (lots of opportunities to play with tone here, from near-black browns to purple to red), and then highlights up to silver on sharp edges. More than that and we're going into showcase level TMM or NMM.
>>
>>51803250
depends on what kind of gold you want to paint. using gw paints=
dark gold=balthasar gold basecoat, agrax earthshade wash, gehenna's gold highlight over anything that isn't a recessed area, and a final touch of auric armor gold on small sharp edges.
bright gold=retributor armor, reikland fleshshade, auric armor gold, liberator gold (or runefang steel, or stormhost silver)
and thats just a few GW examples
>>
>>51803250
literally just watch dunc vids

GW just does: base coat of gold, agrax earthshade wash, highlight of brighter layer paint gold. looks fine, see >>51802888

(GW also shops their box art but whatever watch the dunc vid)
>>
>>51803388
Ok, because when I paint gold, The paint is weird, and even after 2-3 coats, there are still "holes" and even a shade and a layer can't really fix it
>>
>>51803437
Might be old/dry paints. Are you sure you're using a base paint? Layer paints don't give as good coverage.

Or you're painting too thick.
>>
>>51803437
Try undercoating brown.

old mtg player here, really hooked by the painting and curious about playing Warhammer i ve been doing research about it all the weekend i wonder which is the best way to start playing warhammer? i ve read that right now is kind of cool for n00bs like me because of the death of Warhammer fantasy and the age of sigmar just begun so feels like i can just jump on the train.
I ve seen at GW website there is a starter box but feels like Portal set for mtg, is it worth it or if i show up to play with that at a warhammer shop ppl is going to bully me?
Any advice would be cool

tl;dr: n00b who knows nothing about Warhammer wonder where to start in the age of sigmar expansion. Feeling doubious about buying starter pack

>>
>>51804004
Pick an army first. The starter box is a great value for just jumping in to open siggy games. I'm starting death, and the flesh eater court box, plus two boxes of ghouls is an instant army.
>>
>>51804032

>>51804004
you might also head to your FLGS and see if you can set up an introductory game, it's rare to find a group that doesn't want new player and if it's a Games Workshop, they definitely want you to play.
It'll be a good way to get a feel of the game, and make some friends that you can play with later.
>>
>>51804004
This Q is better aimed at /AoSg/ >>51792511, but the starter box for AoS is good- if you want one of those armies. My advice is to choose your army based on the models you like, because you're going to spend a while painting them. Most of the start collecting! boxes are good as well, so don't feel confined to the starter set (they're not as efficient as the starter set, but they are good value)

If you want to go Stormcast, their half of the starter set is legitimately decent, and not a million miles away from lists that do well at tournaments. If you can find someone to go in on it with you, get two starter sets and double up on the Stormcast half (my local store manager will do this for a single person and just keep a doubled up box on hand for the next person who wants Chaos)

Neither army in the starter set will get you bullied, but like a noob turning up to FNM with their first deck, people with competitive themed armies will just end you if you don't add the right stuff to your list. Khorne particularly is vulnerable to fast or ranged lists just outrunning or outgunning what is fundamentally a slow melee army. Similar to mtg, you will have to work out whether someone wants a casual game or is bringing their finest cheese.
>>

Destruction has two really nice options at the moment, with Bonesplitterz' arrowboyz and the Thundertusks / Stonehorns from Beastclaw Raiders.

Also I painted my first batch of English Knights for a fairly big Agincourt diorama I'm putting together. Color scheme is fairly simple and I'm skipping a few smaller things like details on the faces since I'm painting like 150 guys to go on about a 2'x3' board. I really must invest in a proper lightbox one day.
>>
>>51804209
Nothing in the stormcast side is seeing competitive play. The main troops are just tanky and don't do enough damage and everything around them have the wrong weapons. ----------------------
>>
>>51804314
>>51804209
>not a million miles away

>plz no bully

at the FLGS, and as he's an mtg guy I assume he's fully capable of netlisting if he wants to.
>>
>>51804403
The start collecting boxes are better value unless you're buying the khorne half online I believe.
>>
>>51804469
Except that the SC SC! only makes sense if you already have a starter set, what with the two liberators.

Bear in mind that after your Battle Brothers vouchers (in a real GW) an AoS starter set costs 55 quid.

>two retributors

>>
>>51804403
yes, i have seen few list of AoS but like mtg if you don't get the mechanic even with a god tier 1 deck you would beated by everyone. But a mid range army to get smoothy in the game would be nice. Any good netlisting site? Have checked few forums but everyone is pissed about sigmar and still talking about fantasy

I'm trying to emulate/adapt this guy's paint style (http://www.glaven.net/necrons/), since it's really close to what I had in my head for my army (energy blue necrons). Dark metal would probably make them much easier to be consistent, leadbelcher+ironbreaker+nuln oil usually works pretty well from what I've seen.

Looking for some modeling advice for a Space Marine. I wanted to make a shooty infrantry HQ for some time and picture related finally inspired me to do it. So, rules-wise it will be a SM Techmarine on foot with the primarch's wrath and servo harness, meaning the following:

- power armor infantry, on foot
- bolter
- plasma gun with pistol range
- flamer
- power axe
- two power fists

Now I'm wondering how to fit all that on one model while keeping him looking like a sneaky commando AND satisfying WYSIWYG ?

I will probably get some recon marines from FW as the base, give him a stalker pattern boltgun from deathwatch, strap a plasma pistol to his hip but I'm not sure about the rest. Perhaps instead of a stalker use a combi-flamer and add a scope ?

To be honest, Red could probably work, the Legion Symbol is a red wolf head after all, but you'd need to be careful of the colour balance of the model if you choose to do it.

I want a 40k asethetic, so minimal fantasy bits, and all i want him armed with is a shuriken pistol and Scorpion Chainsword (Where would I get this, or how would I make it?)
This is one is beautiful, but too dynamic for me. Just want a normal standing dude that looks like a commander with a pistol and chainsword.

If he's not a techmarine, what is he supposed to be?
My first though - because of the raven guard marine was to model the power fists as bionic raven claws on his feet like the chaos raptors sometimes have. But then I realized that you don't have a jump pack.
Putting all that gear into one mini without a servoharness is gonne be really difficult.
Next best thing I can think of would be to use marneus calgar for the fistyness and switch the bolters under his fists for the plasmakombi and a flamerpistol. The poweraxe could be modeled as a sidearm of held in one of the fists although that is really a lot of fucking gear.

In any case being sneaky with all that shit is gonna be a pretty tall order.
You could make up some commando tech that swallows sound or something, but still.

I personally prefer it if WB look more "purpely".

For mine I use:
overall basecoat of Doombull Brown

Red parts: Khorne Red / light shade of Nuln Oil in the recesses /shading red with Druchii Violet / highlight with Wazdakka Red

Silver: Leadbelcher and shading with Nuln Oil Gloss - makes the silver dark put keeps it shiny.

Eyes: basecoat of Mephsiton Red / layer Firedragon bright / hightlight Yriel Yellow and dot of Ceramite white.

I messed up and used VMA Chrome as the base coat over a black primer. I used a LOT of wash to try to stain it down but it still shows.

I need a good stand-in for the old boltgun metal. VMC/VMA Silver is too bright, but VMC/VMA Gun Metal is way too dark.

Blue hat flash git needs some more wash on his weapon I think, and the whole bunch of them needs matte vanish still, but I was going to wait on that until the end.

>>51807723
I ended up doing many more layers than i would have liked on the faces and the contrast between layers was too strong. I could try to wash to smooth it out but I am also thinking it would be better not to add MORE paint right now.

>yfw this post is a reminder of just how old the original 6th edition releases are

It's been 4 years, and it seems even longer because GW releases so much stuff these days. What we still remember as "those brand new models we hate/love" are actually old shit that new players like this guy started with.

You're all officially 40k oldfags now if you've been playing since before 6E.
>>
>>51802407
>>51802636
>Resin can be difficult and dangerous to work with. Not everyone likes the stuff.

I don't know that alone doesn't justify the price.
And for bases you only have to clean them and prime them, at most drill some holes to pin or cut some bits and pieces of to set the feet of the mini down.

Just seems pointless to me that they made the kickstarter producing the same bases for the same price just in a different material and under a different label.
Okay, almost the same bases. They are all made as inserts for round lipped bases, but still.
>>
>>51810406
>You're all officially 40k oldfags now if you've been playing since before 6E.
started with my brother during early third. One of his friends still bought the 2nd edition starter because he was into orks.

People whine about this all the time, but it's not like one single corn of dust is gonna cause an explosion of tumors in your body.
Longterm exposure will do that, but if you are not sniffing resin dust for a living this whole 'muh cancer' stuff is just as retarded as the wiki link about inhaling fumes.

How do you even assemble a mini if you are so afraid of cutting yourself you can lift up a knife? It's taken for granted that you are not stupid enough to stab yourself in the face with it repeatedly.

>>

You mean line highlights?
There's no right and wrong when painting.
If the model has a texture that lends itself to drybrushing do that if you like the look of it.
Highlighting by hand is gonna take a lot more time though. Might look crisper though, depending on how good a painter you are.

In any case you can't do it 'wrong'.

Just keep him around, dude. At some point you'll get another one of those anyway most likely and then keep the old one at home and take the new one out for playing. At some point it'll be cool to have that one dude looking mediocre amidst an army of better painted models but even then, he'll still be your dude and the forefather that had you rank up as a painter and enabled you to paint a better looking army in the first place.

Should you wash GW stuff before you prime it?

I've heard that some companies use a spray to get the molds off after casting and it can cause the primer to not adhere properly
>>
>>51811103
you should was every miniature, no matter where you bought it from before priming. Possibly even before assembly, depending on the material you are using. Plastic cement creates a chemical weld so that's not gonna be an issue, but whenever you use superglue it's a good idea to glue on a clean surface, unless you want your minis to fall apart in the future.
>>
>>51811103

That's only for resin and metal. GW's plastic don't have any kind of residue that would prevent paint from sticking to it.

I've heard one or two people say they got oily plastic from GW and had to wash it, but that's probably 0.1%.
>>
>>51811148
you can bet that after assembly and mold line removal you are gonna have at least the oil from your skin on them.
Imo you should always clean the models. Not a lot of work, but it can potentially save you a lot of trouble.
>>
>>51811051
Yeah, I'll admit my mechaboner played a small part in my choice. Was either Daemons or Tau at first. But the image in my head of a suit slugging a heavy ass cannon like Serious Sam, too bulky to jumpjet, i was sold. Mobile Artillery and Gunlines, yes please.
>>
>>51811184

>>
>>51811198
>I'm not a greasy slob. I wash my hands before assembly and all my electronics don't have a single fingerprint on them.
it doesn't have anything to do with being unclean. It's how your skin works.
And if you really have zero humidity in your skin you should probably seek medical attention.
>>
>>51811184
The reason your models are so disgusting is because you put as much care into your personal hygiene as you do into your capitalization.
>>
>>51811225

Not everyone is a fucking manbeast like you who starts sweating grease from their fingertips after an hour of moldline shaving.

Wash your hands with soap and you won't have any oil that's visible or that will affect paint on the surface of the model. If we use your stupid ass logic, just handling the model for priming will get the same fucking skin oil on it after you're done washing the model anyway.
