Update on my Skaven Gutter Runner. Happy with how it has turned out, though I haven't washed it in Nuln oil as was suggested, cause frankly I'm scared of fucking it up. This is probably the best model I've painted to date, so just trying to build up the nerve to throw a wash on it.

Hey WIP! I'm wanting to build a more or less (less probably) fluffy Dark Mechanicum army using the Legiold Cybernetica and going with a necron-esque vibe. I'm basing the necron part off the pic of Scoria where if you look closely you can see a tiny necron scarab perched on him.

Anyway, I'm torn between using a 40k Dominus model and building anew Abeyant for him out of a cantopik bits OR using Cawl and converting the legs with, you guessed it, more necron legs.

Thoughts? I'm literally split 50/50 on which way to go with him. My thallax and Castellax are pretty much stock but I used destroyer gauss Cannons for the thallax lightning guns and another necron gun I can't recall at the moment for Darkstar Cannons. I can try to take pics of my WIP later...

Unfortunately don't have any cropped to size images of the final product on hand, but I do have a previous progress picture (the top of the backpack was later made gold). These are the first four minis I've ever painted. Be gentle /wip/.

I think they turned out okay, and I'd feel good about putting them on the tabletop. My edge highlighting is sloppy, and I'm not sure how to improve it other than practice. I've got the patented "nice fine tip on yer brush" but my hands just don't seem steady enough to paint some of the lines.

The horns on the one guy are black just because there's no way I can get to some of the surfaces on them now that I've assembled him. Lesson learned with that particular head: paint it before assembly.

I don't have a drill for the gun barrels yet, but that's another thing that stands out to me. The flat gun fronts don't look great.

Anyway, I'm sure I'm doing lots of little things wrong. I welcome advice and critique.
>>
>>51772328
Just do a headshape and smooth that, let it sit for 15 minutes and find something round in the right diameter you can press into the GS(back of a pencil, straw whatever works as stamp).
>>
>>51770369
How'd you make sure the feet would stand on the same plane?
>>
>>51772725
I can freehand most of it, the problem is it takes way too much damn time.
>>
>>51772732

>>
>>51772822
First and foremost, well done on painting your first 4 models.

You're aware of your mistakes, that's good, if you keep them in mind, you'll progress MUCH faster.

As you said, your highlights are a bit sloppy, don't worry they often are at the beginning.
Have you tried angling your brush to a 45 degree to catch the edge of the model with the side of your brush? That's how your supposed to do edge highlighting, which is the main mode of highlights for SM.

It might sound silly, but thin your paints a bit more. I'll use the image of milk consistency, your paint shoudl be like milk. What helped me visualise the right consistency was a dude using a test tube with water and another with milk in it. Milk would go down the end of the tube like water, but slower, and still leave a riny trace after itself. That's how your paint should behave on your palette.
I know it's tempting to try and cover everything as fast as you can but taking your time is essential.

Cont.
>>
>>51773302
Most of that is actually painted grey, though there are a couple of FW pieces that hadn't been painted yet.
>>
>>51773363
Cont.

Don't overload your brush either. Even with proprerly thinned paints, if you have too much paint on your brush it will fuck it up. Remember, most of the time, only the tip of the brush should have paint on it.
To make sure your paint isn't too watery on your brush, use a tip an anon said a couple threads back: very lightly make your brush horizontally touch your tissue, parallel to it, let the moisture be absorbed by it. Flip your brush and do it on the other side of it, again, very lightly, and you should be good. If you followed everything you should have a brush with enough paint with the right consistency. It is not a sin to go back to your pallette for more paint when you're done applying your first load, so no need to overload.

Finally, brush control. It's there, vut you can obviously make progress on that. Remember to brace your wrists down on the table and stick your hands together to have a steady hand. You'll learn how to control your brush with time. I weep when I see the difference between the 1st guy of my 1st squad of IW and the last one of the same squad, so don't worry it comes fast if you concentrate, brace your hands and take your time. In due time, you'll manage to do the eyes, that you have left at the basecoat stage for now.

So keep at it, and keep your mistakes in mind to avoid reproducing them.
>>
>>51773387

Thanks friendo, this is all good advice. By your description it sounds like my paints could definitely be thinner than I've been making them.

The idea of doing more details inside the eyes sounds crazy to me right now. Just getting them filled nicely was very difficult. I'm sure it'll seem more feasible as I keep going.

Looks fine to me mate. It can be hit and miss with a lot of brushes, also depends on your painting style, as well as how harsh you are in terms of cleaning and actually painting.

I recently bought a set that is identical to the third link you posted, although the brand is different the brushes are the exact same, so far they have been great.

Just right for picking out detail as well as the variety to allow application to the larger areas on the miniature.

Best of luck anyway mate.

So this isn't really a WIP, even though it is.
Sat down tonight, painting with my son, trying to make him catch some interest in this hobby. He´s only 4 years old, but already finds it fun and "different" in terms of painting.

Anyways, this is a picture of a 5 minute dry-brush job I did at the time. Its by far the best things I have painted, but it brought me back somehow. See, when I started this hobby, it was me and two friends. Our parents where to busy being "adults", doing "grown up stuff" (aka; smoking, drinking coffee and complaining to other adults the hardship of being a grown up....), and no one was there to coach us in terms of community or such. See you have to remember this was was way before the age of the internet!
Now days, you can get a tutorial at the click of a button. You can order stuff on a whim! Just about anything is possible now days it seems, you don't even have to come up with army-lists of your own for Christ sake!

So when viewing this model, this 5 minutes of painting model, I remembered my first miniature. And let me tell you, it looked like shit! Like a turd, left in the sun to dry, that was my first miniature a good 17+ years back. And had I the slightest of help, producing anything like picture related, like a full army, it would have made anything (at the time) that I had painted, look even more crap! Hell, it would have been viewed as the best painted army in the area when finished, by a long shot! And still... its just a 5 minute dry-brush.

>>51774875
This is actually the kit I have, that I use with my Iwata Neo. Some notes from personal experience:

- First time I tried to use the glass jar, the plastic lid broke
- The metal cup is nearly impossible to use. It doesn't stay attached well, and it's at a weird angle. You'll likely end up dumping paint out of it while trying to use it.
- The compressor does NOT come with a pressure regulator. It sprays at 58 psi, and ONLY at 58 psi, which is WAAAYYY too much for painting minis. That said, I was able to find a pressure regulator on Amazon for pretty cheap.
-Otherwise (using the Neo), the system works great!

Crossposting from 40KG because I will keep you guys posted on this one since I liked my idea.
So I recently picked up Adeptus Mechanicus by Rob Sanders, and it inspired me for some nice new Dark Mechanicum conversion. I had the idea of making a few Forge World guard-servitors or some sort of slave-automatons that would tend the forges. I'll be using Lord of Plagues and Gutrot Spume from the Nurgle Rotbringers line, going to repair their open sores with GS and replace the scythes with quad-thunder hammers. What say ye?

Depends on what you want it to look like. Officially, Games Workshop has recommend at least 3 different ways to layer up from Khorne Red.
Pic related goes Khorne Red, Nuln Oil wash, Wazdakka Red edge highlight, and a Cadian Fleshtone fine highlight.

Another variant they've recommended in the past is a Khorne Red base, Carroburg Crimson wash, Wazdakka Red edge highlight, and then a Squig Orange fine highlight.

Finally, they've recommended a Khorne Red base, a drybrush of Kindleflame, and then a wash of Carroburg Crimson.

blend your paints.

Mix Khorne Red with a little Wazdakka and see if it's bright enough.

If you're going to be using Martian Ironearth, you should be painting the entire base with Doombull Brown first so that way it crack into a darker red-brown than pure black plastic. Other than that, clean up your base's rim.

Posted this the other day, just did the base, now need some serious advice on what to do with the head section. Painting that white might be too much white, since the base is an ice base, and I'm also not sure about actually getting a nice, thin coat of white on without any brush strokes visible, having no airbrush, so I'm really not sure how to do the cockpit.
Was considering giving it the same Runefang Steel > Guilliman Blue x2 > Waywatcher Green > Guilliman Blue job I did for the leg plates, but also not entirely sure how that might look without a silver lining surrounding it and how even I can get that to not be "blobby" on such large surfaces.

TL;DR no fucking clue what to do with my Dunecrawler's cockpit using these colors

I need to get to the store and buy some more paint to finish off the sores and decide on how to paint thw base but besides that I consider him completed. The smudge by skull on his hip is also gone but due to my lackluster photo-skills I can't manage to get a better picture than this one.

Any critique and comments are highly welcomed as I'm new to painting and need as much help as I can get!

I'm going to base my Necron dynasty on Sekhmet, so i would like to have something lion related at least for my overlord - and i figured you guys would be the most likely ones to know where to find a 28mm lion skull or something to that effect.
Do you guys have any ideas?

So last night I kicked around the idea of finishing my dry-brush marine I had thus far spend about 5 minutes worth of painting on. This was mainly due to shits and giggles, but again, a statement that a model can come out pretty good (at least to my standard) with just about minimal effort and basic techniques. In total I think I spent around 10-15 minutes of painting this guy, not including drying times. And I know for a fact that had I been able to do this as a beginner (when I first started this hobby), It would have taken me days to get it to this standard I think.

Anyways, I know its full of blisters, damages and mold lines, these (as stated in the original post) is one of my sons "try me" models, as I literally have hundreds upon hundreds of basic marines lying about since my days as a new to the hobby.
>>

are you using old paint?
If you had to thin it with water after the medium evaporated that can happen.

Post a pic, might have several causes actually.

The armour looks grimier IRL and I think that he will look amply nurgly when he gets his sores on, but I will definately consider some added filth if I'm still not satisfied with his look when I bring myself around to finishing him.
The banner is from an old Beastlord I had lying about. It's the same model as the one in the picture.

I like your Blightkings! How did you do the rusty and corroded effects on their weapons and banner?

Don't worry about sounding like an asshole, I need all the help I can get.
His pose is indeed not the best at the moment and something I will have to change. My idea behind it was a combination of wanting him to look up as if he is facing and even taller foe than himself and struggling to find a pose in which the glue would dry in. However when you're looking at him from the side it looks like is about to fall over.

Regarding the colour of his flesh I'm not entirely convinced that I will keep it, allthough I personally like it as it have the apperance of mummified flesh (Pic related). The flesh tone is n fact just the beginning step in Duncan's guide to Putrid Blightkings. As such I might follow up on it whenever I get a hold of some more paint.
>>
Just painted some Palid Wych Flesh, ended up being kind of chunky. Realized afterwards that I had been using my water for metallics previously, was that most likely the reason for it having random small grains in it and generally seeming uneven or did I simply not thin it down enough and it was a case of thick paint? Felt like it was plenty thin, since I needed 3 layers to really get it to cover the Rakarth Flesh underneath.

So I'm now the proud owner of 150 plastic dwarfs. I'm looking to do them essentially as a generic-use-for-most-things army on mostly multibases. I also want to pick up some old dwarf metal miniatures now and then for characters and some Wargames Foundry light bombards as well as some medieval/reniassance organ guns. right now im just waiting for the crackle medium to dry fully, then im gonna hit it with a drybrushing of white to kill the shine and hit the edges

afterwards ill shove some snow on here and there and call it a day

in learning about this kind of basing, ive seen tons of different ways to go about it. water effects seems neat for that deep deep glacial look, especially if you color tint the stuff and add crackle on top, but thats far more effort than im willing to care about haha

I suggest reading what's on the label on your bottle.
If you already got decent results using a wash, I'd assume you can do the same with paint since both are basically just acrylic paint.

You can always just mix a few drops of water effect with paint to see how it turns out and if it cures correctly.

Depending on what product you use this could be the intended purpose or screw with it.

Buy a cheapo $20 airbrush for now and spend 100+ on the compressor. Then buy a midrange brush like Badger Krome or Iwata Eclipse later on.

If you want to be a super Jew get a Badger Renegade and rest of the money on the compressor, but that's a waste of money and you're probably going to upgrade the compressor anyway, and probably the brush too.

Good compressors for under $100 don't really exist, and $ is about 1:1 with euro.

>>
>>51788261

Get a compressor with a tank. The tank gives you a large store of air for a steady supply, so you won't get air coming in spurts. It also gives you period of quiet when the tank is full, instead of always needing the compressor to be on to spray. Good tank compressors are also cheaper than the good tankless ones. There are quiet compressors of both varieties, but they are VERY expensive.

So I'm planning out a Horus Heresy converted Mechanicum Biologis army, with lots of Skaven conversions and Dark Eldar parts mixed in to make some biological Beep Boop substitutes.

Thing is, I want to ally in some Levy blobs, which is 100 miniatures, probably a mix of converted Skavenslaves and Crypt Ghouls, with a few cybernetic parts mixed in.
Also, I need two Squad Sarges, but I presume I can just greenstuff on some extra muscle and/or add some more cybernetics.

I lack an airbrush, is there any techniques that would help to paint that many models in a reasonable time? Previous armies were all quite elite.

These models are really bad for newbies. They require a lot of clean up. The flash is minimal but they don't cut down the connections to the sprue very well. You have to file and cut a lot down to make them look right. If you're a very these are okay models with the same amount of work a 90's metal model would take. But I'm fine with that since that's the core demographic for these.

That's a good paintjob and chapter choice. Flesh Tearers right?

The eye does suck though. Here's an easy tip, try drawing a horizontal white line in the eye instead of actually painting the eye. Just follow the tip of his helmet brow and just drag a line of white inside the eye socket. Then fill the eye socket with a blue glaze or wash.

If even that is too hard, fill in the eye socket by using very watered down white paint to stain the eye socket white. This will take a few applications and you should use an acrylic medium like Vallejo Thinner Medium or Citadel Lahmian Medium instead of water, but for people who can't control the brush enough to stay in that damn eye socket, it's super easy to just touch the socket and have the white wash/glaze flow in there.

It's a spoider that hides in peoples shadows.
Causes all kinds of shenanigans in game by attacking other models while it's off the table hiding, has a longer range depending on the height of the model it's hiding on.

Test neophyte's fleshy bits are done. I think washing the skin with Druchii Violet is a bit too much, I might do a half-Violet half-Medium wash next time to make the transitions a bit more gentle. There's a bit of glossiness on the model for some reason, but that'll be fixed when the matte varnish goes on.

Still got a lot left to sculpt as you can see, but the transition between torso and legs will be done once it's assembled.
Still got no idea what to do with those exhaust pipes. Tried them in a lot of angles, and nothing looks good. Was planning to use them for attaching wings made from some fire or some shit like that, but don't know. Might remove them completely, and sculpt some proper armour on the back.
Thoughts?
>>
>>51792656
Yeah, the general groin area is a bit strange right now, but gonna sculpt over it later, basically only keeping that little top rim. Hopefully the pose will look better when that's bulked out.

look pretty sweet m8. The legs look fine to me. You can always do what gw does and put a loincloth or loinchains to hide the squat gap. But I think its pretty cool.

For some reason I just love adding in those weird little cultists with way too high helmets everywhere. I don't even know where I got that koncept from in the first place. Gonna have to sculpt one up at some point.
And the DP will have one as well like in the sketch i think. Perfect as a spell familiar, I'd just add an open book on his back that the little dude can read from.

I know, I hate wings. I gave up after one on this sculpt I started way back, and that's on a huge scale compared to warhammer, getting it to look good on an even smaller level is never fun. But if i make it out of some flame then it'll at least be easier, I can just use wire for the "fingers", and not have to find a way to fill in the skin inbetween as you do on biological wings.

wiremesh can be easily cut and bent, but provides a good armature for clay and putties.

That said you can get wings from GW or third parties fairly easy too. Not sure if GW still sells the dragon and balrog wing sprues separately, but there are enough other companies these days that offer conversion pieces and wings happen to be a pretty common item in that area.

I am not a very good painter though.
In fact I haven't painted any miniatures in many many years, though I just got back into the hobby again after a long break, as I need another hobby (and something to spend money on). And because I saw that new Traitor Legion book quite recently. But thanks.
Gonna go see in my old dusty boxes if I can find something I've actually painted.

>And because I saw that new Traitor Legion book quite recently
This is exactly why I got back into the hobby. I've not played since early 4th ed when GW released the travesty that was the ed 4 CSM codex. I promised that I would come back to GW if they gave us a way to play a proper fluffy DG army, and they fucking did. So here I am, 10 years after quitting, enjoying the hobby again.

I need an an autrach in my army, anyone got any ideas how this one was made?
I want mine to be as default as possible, only with a scorpion chainsword and MAYBE a fusipn pistol

>>

Well, that red is too bright and has zero depth, it also needs at least a layer of highlights in order to look as nice as it should.

The base is also too plain, it needs something to make it pop. Remember, nit's not only the model, but the overall mixture of model and base what really makes it stand out.

>>51791629
That's amazing. All of it.

>>51793390

Yeah, still have the good old codex around here somewhere, the one with legion rules. Never bought the one after that, and lost most interest in 40k. Got a few extra units for my old necron army when the modern necron dex came out (the one with all the new and egyptian stuff), but never played any games with them. Then bought the DV set when it first came out, 6th, but never played anything then either. But now we can finally praise the dark gods again, as proper Word Bearers.
That book was a good move. I still need to buy a physical version though, just got a pdf from on here two months or so ago when I first heard about it.

Started working on this palanquin idea as well, because I can't just focus on one model at a time (I don't even have one fully built marine for my army yet, of the 60 I bought a while back).

Can't get any good lightning for the webcam though. But this is the removable lords base, and the "flat" layer of the palanquin, which is basically part of a temple being carried around.
Around the lords base I'll build upwards so that it's on the same height as the base, just blocked out the shape of the base first. Then I'll add on some pillars and such.
After that I'll start bulking out the bottom a bit, and attach it to the "main base", and the carriers that I'm also working on.
