Depends on the bank. Some have monthly fees and some do not; some will charge monthly fees if your balance is below a specific amount. Most checking accounts generate at least some interest, though savings accounts will generate more.

Personally, I use a credit union because fuck banks. It's locally owned and not for-profit. They also pay higher interest. I have no fees and no minimum balance to maintain on my checking, and my savings account just has to have more than $5 in it.

If you're putting large amounts of money in a bank - in the millions, say - they will charge the fuck out of you to keep it there and won't give interest.

I'm not talking about being super rich or anything along that line, no, just about how the economic stability of many western nations led their population into an idle, lazy and consumption driven state of moral indifference.
