Rick Santorum magically went from single digits in the iowa polls to high teens in the final week before the primary that Ron Paul was originally leading. Santorum OVERPERFORMED his already staggering support increase, with Ron Paul ended up in third in a near 3 way tie that was 24% santorum 24% romney 21% paul. This allowed the media to completely marginalize his performance, which killed his momentum. Had he won Iowa, he could have turned his second place win in new hampshire into a first place win. Winning the first two states may have given him momentum in the following states, and would have shattered the trusted (at the time) MSM narrative that Ron Paul was "unelectable".
