SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The number of hate crimes in California increased about 11 percent last year, the second consecutive double-digit increase, but the overall number still was a third lower total than a decade ago, the state's attorney general reported Monday.

Blacks, Jews and gay men were among the most frequent targets.

There were 931 such crimes reported statewide, nearly 100 more than in 2015. That equated to about one for every 42,000 Californians.

More than half the crimes reported last year were based on the victim's race or ethnicity. Hate crimes involving a victim's sexual orientation increased about 10 percent, to 207 last year, with about three-quarters of those targeting gay men.

Less than 20 percent were because of the victim's religion, and the number declined last year. Jews, not Muslims, were the most common targets even amid heated rhetoric by Donald Trump during the presidential campaign regarding potential terror threats from Muslims.

It's the first back-to-back increase in hate crimes reported in California since 1996, though the number is less than half the spike that occurred in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 2001, when Jews also were the leading religious target, said criminologist Brian Levin, a former New York City police officer who directs the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University, San Bernardino.

"The good news is we have a lower number of hate crimes than we have in the past. The bad news is the trend is up," he said. "People feel disenfranchised, and there's a tribalistic tone that has come out."

He speculated that gay men may be seeing a "spillover effect" from the increased prominence of the LGBT community and discussions of same-sex marriages.

Before this the word "Nigger" was actually a friendly term used by both black and white people the same way that the word "Gentleman" is used today.

Once they had successfully raised racial tension by changing the use of our language and creating false stories of rape and murder they began changing OUR history. Before the time we lived as strong beautiful American upper middle class citizens. They began to run news stories that we were actually slaves and had never made any money. The created tensions and constant fake news stories caused the Big Noses to create a new reality in which we were committing crimes and were eventually enslaved. These news stories never stopped and our great history in America has been erased. PLEASE SPREAD THIS.

I get it. Survival was at stake, it became more important than beliefs. Thus the unity that furthered survival and growth came to the fore. The foundation of the true religion was quickly abandoned when it was perceived to be counter-productive to survival at that time

Jew here. My temple has a gay rabbi. They perform gay marriage (obviously) and prior to that being legal they performed commitment ceremonies for same-sex couples. When will churches finally be held to the same standard? The government needs to step in and make sure everyone has equal access to facilities. The age of being allowed to discriminate against people for whom they love is over. We can't let ourselves be ruled by dinosaurs. This would also shut down Islam to mandate that religious facilities not discriminate against homosexuals, so /pol/ can get in on it.

A spokesperson of the Church of England's Lichfield Diocese said: "The traditional teaching of the church is that marriage is a life-long union between and man and a woman and the diocese is committed to that teaching.

"At the same time, following the Church of England's General Synod in February, there was a call for a 'radical new Christian inclusion' of gay and lesbian people in the church.

"We are working with LGBT clergy and lay people to look at what that means for churches across our diocese and are committed to building an inclusive and faithful church that loves and serves all its communities".
