That should do you. What I like when nymphing is a double fly rig that goes like this
>2 or 3x leader/tippet
>bh bugger
>4 or 5x tippet
>nymph
>Strike indicator optional
I do it with my 4 weight a lot and don't use a strike indicator often with it. Ill do something between euronymphing and high sticking, using the end of my fly line as a strike indicator.
Then I dish it like so
>cast
>dead drift past my main piece of structure/hole
>finish by swinging the wooly bugger
>cast again, repeat 4 or 5 times
>move on
Usually they hit the nymph but sometimes the bugger gets hit.

What do you fegs think? I have one rod out with squid which probably will just get snagged and then I'm casting around. I tried to claim the end of this little pier before the minorities wake up, but I can only choose one side. Cast near the channel or away from the channel? High tide is in about an hour.

Saltwater confirmed a meme.

Got out there an hour before sunrise. Even a few snook or somethin else big chilling right under the dock, won't bite shit. Using every lure possible all over and don't get shit. Squid on another route, dude who grew up there shows me how to rig it and where to cast and nothing but tiny baitfish nibbles. Then they say live shrimp is best. Minorities all rolled in a little after, one posts up right next to me and another one way down casts totally fucking sideways and crosses my line. And they are still rolling in, car after car of brown people. But even the people using live shrimp didn't hit shit.

Fists have been pumped. Mission accomplished. Got him on the caddis. Third one to take it today. Threw it into turbulent water and didn't even see the fish take it but when I picked up the slack there he was. Good quick release. Water here is super cold compaired to Non spring fed streams

>>1085090
Damn that's pretty bad, if your area is that dead I don't blame you for avoiding the salt. At least you tried bepis.

>tfw I caught a dinky snook with the Sebile Flatt Shad last night
There's tons of greenies in the area and these have a similar profile. Pretty good for a meme lure.
>>
>>1085092
Looks like that dam has a good passage through the center, probably not a big problem but in a creek idk.
>>
>>1085090
>live shrimp

What were they going after with the live shrimp? Smaller fish like blue runners, croakers and mojarras usually like cut up bits of shrimp and bigger fish like snook are more interested in all of the nice bait swimming around.

>snook under the dock

Were they staged up there facing the current? They're waiting for baitfish to drift under there. If you throw away from where they're facing and reel in towards them you might get a bite, they also might not have been hungry.
>>
>>1085092

Too bad it hasn't been more dindu kids.

>>1085105
Snook supposedly like the live shrimp, and everything else will take frozen shrrimp. But the squid is popular too, dide was telling me to tie a Pompano rig (basically a drop shot) and I should get this and that.

And the snook were just chilling under the littłe pier. But they were pretty big so I'm sure rhey know not to bite any of the usual baits hanging from string attached to humans
>>
>>1085155
Snook do like live shrimp but in june-august where all the bait moves close inshore they're more likely ignore it with all the bigger meals swimming around. Was there a lot of bait in your area?

>pompano rig
The double drop rig with the yellow floats? Pretty good shit for pompano and other fish that swim higher up in the water column. For bottom dwellers like whiting, croakers and mojarra I like a carolina rig with a tiny size 8 or 6 hook and small pieces of shrimp. Those guys have really tiny mouths. Also when using small bits of shrimp, remove the outer shell.
>>
>>1085001

>>1085046
I've never done good with squid unless I'm using it to catch bait fish to use for cut bait. You should try shrimp or fillets of pin fish if you've just been using squid.

>>1085090
Live shrimp is pretty fuckin fantastic guy. Hook it through the "horn" with a wire hook either free lined weightless or on a Carolina rig and toss it on the edge of grass, tide lines, moving water, etc and you'll be likely to pick something up. The only problem with shrimp is that if there are a lot of bait fish around they will steal it.

I'm probably not the best person to ask seeig as this is my first year even targeting trout. From what I've learned so far your best bet to catch them is to go at sun up or in down when it is the coldest during the day. I did that this morning and it payed off. I also changed locations to a spring fed creek instead of one that flows out of a lake. The temperature of the water was noticeably different. This is my 4th or 5th outing of the summer and it's certainly a grind but I really enjoy it. Every time I go out I get better and learn new things. The guy I spoke with at the shop yesterday said as the temps continue to drop with autumn rolling in the middle of the day will become the best time to fish. I'm very much looking forward to that.

Damn, thats ass. My home lake is plagued with pickerel. maybe the water is just that much warmer down there that they are holding down deeper. Report lists the lake at 67 degrees. When your dad and you take the boat out make sure to give trolling a try. Sometimes that long distance run will allow them to tail it for as long as they want and eventually hit. when you cast and retrieve you have to figure 8 at the end of each one because they will hit those lures right at the side of the boat.

This spoon in chrome and gold is my favorite pike bait of all time. Ive probably got close to a hundred on one single one and ive never lost it and never sharpened the hooks.

I could've put on something smaller than a 2/0 if I wanted to catch baitfish that are smaller than the dink bass.

Funny tho because I guess if all of the other people who fish saltwater around here were to post on /out/, they would be considered just as terrible because nobody catches anything. They just talk about that snook they saw a guy catch last week. What a fucking joke. Saltwater is for chumps who are content with sitting around watching a line for 6 hours with the hopes of maybe catching a single fish.

Very new to fishing, I'm building an all-around catfish rig for flatheads/blues in moderate current rivers. I really don't like baitcasters so I want a spinning rod, but I'm finding a narrow selection for my budget of $100

I've narrowed it down to the following:
BPS CatMaxx CMX70
Okuma Avenger ABF50 or 65
Penn Battle II 6000
Cabela's Salt Striker 65B

- Any suggestions on narrowing these down or additional models to look at?
- Is the baitfeeding function going to be useful for fishing live bluegill/goldfish/chubs?

In the morning I started out with only dry flies. I had a elk hair caddis that got 5-6 takes. They weren't fully commiting which I read can be solved with a smaller fly and smaller line but I didn't have either so I made do. After the caddis I switched to a black and white trico since that's what the guy recomended. Didn't get any takes on it, I think that hatch has yet to emerge yet. Once the sun was fully up and I started getting warmer I switched over to nymphs. Not sure on the names, nothing special. After I got home and did research on what I did wrong I realized I should have been swinging a wet fly in the riffles but I didn't know any better. I'm probably going to go back to the shop today and tweak my assortment now that I have an understanding of where I'm fishing.

As for the time I kinda agree. Majority of my chances to get one were early. I stayed till around 1pm and was seeing activity up untill that point. The water temperature is a huge factor. I can't find any reports that list what the creek is at right now but I know it's pretty cold

The caddis on the left is what got the most attention. But like I said it was the one that had multiple takes but none actually ate it. The one that I hooked was when I should have been using a wet fly and sent that caddis down a pretty fast section of rapids and when it was submerged that little guy came up and ate it. Is there any way to make it easier to make them float? I know setting them down gently on the water helped but when the water wasn't almost dead flat on top it would get pulled under. Could it be my leader and tippet?
>>
>>1086009
Thinner tippet. There is also chemical treatment to make flys be more water repellant (I have heard that they can leave an oil slick around the fly that makes trout more hesitant to take though) I use loon top ride, its a power that is used to dry flys once they get wet. I dry mine every 3-4 casts.
>>
>>1086014
I should say what size of tippet are you using? And is it mono or flouro?
>>
>>1086014

I was pinching the water out of mine and then blowing on it to make the hairs look natural again. Ill have to see if I can find some of that stuff at the fly shop. No. They don't catch anything either. It's a waste of time and effort.

Thank god they go over there tho because if they found a good bass spot they would be catching dinner there every day.
>>
>>1086079
They just salty because it's normal for them to get skunked 2/3 of the time they go fishing and I find saltwater unacceptable since I can go freshwater fishing for half an hour and there's a 95% chance I will at least land a bass in that short time, even at shitty pressured lakes.
>>
>>1086121
No problem, stick with it and hope to run into you on the river sometime
>>
>>1086130
I think it's the other way around cry baby. You're just mad that they're successfully catching cobia, snook bluefish and other awesome fish while you can only catch little pond bass. The one time you try saltwater fishing you fail miserably and come here to bash it because you're an unskilled googan that can't even catch a good freshwater bass.
>>
>>1086132
Nice b8

If other people were actually catching any saltwater fish at the spots, maybe I would think differently. But when there's 25 people at a "good" saltwater spot and nobody lands anything, that's a waste of time.

And it's not worth posting more pics of bass that are bigger than the saltwater fish that people aren't catching.
>>
>>1086149
Then that's not a good spot isn't it? Show me a bigger bass than the ray skid caught or the snook the shill catches. I'll be waiting.

So with all the saltwater memery I gotta ask:
>are pinfish worth eating?
I know they're basically saltwater bluegill
>what technique for sheepshead?
What little saltwater "fishing" I do is sitting on my grandpa's dock in the Clearwater Bay with a bluegill rod and either chunks of hotdog or chunks of bacon. I catch a lot of grunts, hardhead cats, and pinfish. I can see what I'm 99% sure are sheepshead hanging around the dock pilings (probably eating the barnacles) and I can't even get them to look at my bait or any of the half-dozen artificials I've thrown at them.
>how to de-slime your gear after catching a hardhead or gafftop?

>>
>>1086215
Sheepshead are tricky to catch. Artificials will never work for them. The only one I've caught was on a live sand flea.

How do you fish with cranks?

As someone who grew up fishing for them on neighbors' docks with chunks of cut shrimp, it's REALLY fucking simple.
Think of a simple bluegill bobber rig, with a couple of sinkers and a single hook about a foot or so down. That's the rig you use. On that rig you put a smallish chunk of shrimp.
Drop the shrimp into the water and wait until your bobber goes under. When it does, reel it in.
That's it. It's so stupidly simple an 8-year-old can do it with a cheapass Zebco combo. You don't even need to cast if you don't want to, just drop it straight over the side of the dock.

Hi /out/

Looking to get into fresh water fishing in (mostly)Southern California.

I mostly do inshore fishing on party boats and when my friends get their shit together for a charter.

I currently have a pole and reel setup for inshore with 65# braid and top shot 30# mono.

Do you have any recommendations for a bang for buck rod/reel? My friends mostly go after bluegill, but since its my only fresh water setup for a while, I'd want it to be the jack of all trades.

Also what sort of fishing line would I put on it, can I use a similar setup with braid and topshot or leader mono? What sort of weight line should I throw on?

Basically this>>1086400 except that I would say go with a medium-light action. Not incredibly heavy for bluegill, just right for crappie, and not too light for bass.

I'd say go with 15# braid (shilling for Sufix 832) and fluorocarbon as a leader for Carolina rigs, drop shot rigs, and if you ever happen to fish for trout. Otherwise, straight braid is fine. Get some 1/4 oz Panther Martins or Mepps, some Zoom Finesse worms in green pumpkin and bubblegum, size 1 drop shot hooks and 2/0 offset round bend hooks in your brand of choice, bullet weights, drop shot weights, and swivels. Oh, and some aberdeen hooks and weighted bobbers for bluegill.

Wacky rig, Drop Shot rig, weightless Texas rig, Texas rig, or Carolina rig all with these materials

No, he def is replying to the right person. Not my fault that saltwater sucks aside from one hour a month. I'm not going to waste so much time there tho. Bass fishing is so slow in August in Florida but still more productive than shoreline salt.

>>1086546
They are a pain in the ass. I never really target them but have landed a few and the best way seems to be stuff with lots of treble hooks like stickbaits. Problem with that is you have to hook em quick because they spit the baits out as soon as they realize it's plastic.

>>
>>1086404
I think I used some of that and I wasn't super impressed, but I didn't hate it either. I'll have to try some again in a heavier test.

>>1086405
For bass and panfish it's not necessary usually. I do use a leader on my spinning gear though. It helps save braid.

>>1086420
Yep it's just personal preference. I hate feeling like I'm overloading a rod, so I generally go up more than I need to. Like throwing a 1/4 jighead + plastic feels terrible to me on a ML, but I can deal with it on a M.
>>
>>1086600
Yeah pretty much the only thing that isn't totally awesome about Gliss is that it's about as abrasion resistant as mono. So...not very, compared to good fluoro or most braids.

But it's thin as shit (the 40lb Gliss is skinnier than 30lb PowerPro), super supple, and comes in fun colors.
>>
>>1086601
>abrasion resistance
I think that's what I didn't like about it. I was also using 12# test, so I didn't do myself any favors kek.
>>
>>1086605
lol yeah, if you were using it on a bass rig you shoulda gone at least 20. Their 24lb stuff is the same diameter as 6lb mono or 15lb Powerpro.

I actually have a spool of their 12lb, cashier threw it in for free when I was buying other weights because of damaged packaging, dunno what I'm gonna use it for.

Also, if anybody cares, a Lew's Carbon Fire LFS will hold 150 yards of 40lb Gliss and 35 yards of 10lb P-line as backing.
>>
>>1086609
Kek yeah it was when I first started to use braid and really get into fishing. I'll give it another shot next time I spool a reel.

Any hook other than treble hooks. Let them take the bait and run with it with no resistance. They will stop and wait for a bit then eat the bait and swim off, then you set the hook.

>>

Pretty sure you need a rod license to go along with your fishing license, just like you need a knife license and a TV license.

And as far as freshwater goes, you can also fish for carp, 2 species of perch, eels, Wels catfish, European bullhead, and several species of suckers.

There have been efforts to introduce LMB and SMB specifically for sport fishing, although I don't know if they were successful.

You joke but you do need a rod license here, I presume it's to stop people going mad with taking fish away and ruining ecosystems. There's a problem with eastern euros taking loads of fish from fisheries for some reason.

Sounds good though, I'm looking to get into fishing and wasn't sure what you can lure fish with.
>>1086780
>LRF
Looks really fun but unfortunately I'm in Bucks so no sea here. Do go to Devon regularly though, might have to look into it.

What sort of lure would you use for perch?
>>
>>1086782
>there's a problem with eastern euros taking loads of fish from fisheries for some reason
We have the same problem here in the US. The Bosnians and Serbs are atrocious about it. "oh look, yet another bosnian with 5 stringers packed full of catfish tied directly to the "2 catfish per person per day" sign...again". Oh look, he's got 5 other Bosnians with him, each with 5 stringers packed full of catfish. Welp, there goes literally 300 catfish from 6 people in 3 hours because they're gill-netting county ponds.

Like I said, I was pretty sure you needed a rod license. There is a difference between stating a fact many find humorous, and making a joke.

He's an alcoholic who turns in to a 3 year old whenever he drinks. He snached a vodka from a friend of both of ours and I threw him in the pool for it. He is big in to music and a lot more tolerable when he just gets absorbed in to the music, so letting him have some kind of noise maker will keep him calm
I can share some stories

Do this but with but get big minnows and try and get it out deep. Put the bobber 10 or mlre get up the line and let the minnow get all the way down. If a pike passes by if might grab it quick.

Or just go a little shallower and target panfish and then use the panfish as bait.
