Wut picture? The one you quoted I'm holding a bass. Does that look like the Intercoastal?

Anyway there is structure. It's under a bridge, where the river meets the intercoastal, under a bridge, a bunch of docks, sea walls, piers, and rocks. Bunch of needlefish and tiny little 4" cunts chasing my bait, and there were these slightly larger silver fish with black vertical stripes in the rocks but they weren't going for anything. It's basically the same spot I got the smaller jacks and some ladyfish have hit there too, but it's like one out of every 5 times I go something actually fucking bites the lures.

Inlet seems like it's probably the best but it's so goddamn crowded. I think if I do the inlet again, I might park by a beach further down and then walk like a mile back to the jetty and try to get out there. But it's a trek thru the sand with gear.
>>
What do you guys think are some of the most underrated fishing locations? I think the Ozarks would be one.

Pic related shows the Lighthouse Point inlet. North end is all private gated houses. The red is a little public park and you can fish from there but it's always packed with minorities. Other option would be to park at that park on the south end of the pic and then walk back up and try to get near the jetty. But I think there's people there a lot too and I would be pissed if I walked up there with all my shit and it was full of brown people.

I saw dude at that park recently with a little rig that looked cool. One of those old people grocery basket things with wheels and the PVC rod holders on it and a 5gal bucket in there with tackle. If I could get one of those and put some fat sand tires, it would make the walk easier.

Getting skunked three times in a day sucks.
No smallies on the river. I'm shit with carp but did it to pass time. Then nothing big biting in the canal.

Tommorow I'm seeing the rest of a dam being taken down. If you ever get the opportunity to see one get initially breached it's pretty rad.

If rapalas were full price the order would have been above $60, not including the 66 cent spinners
>>
>>1082886
And lol, I did still have a few fun moments with sunnies.

With the corn I was using for carp ud throw it into a sunnie village, they'd hide in grass just offshore and they'd shoot out and nab corn before it went down 5 inches deep. Always rushing back into the grass after

I finally put a hooked corn out there and they slammed it with confidence.

I'm hyped to find out the river near me has crappies, but it's really too bad most freshwater bodies in the commonwealth aren't safe to eat fish out of due to their mercury content. I really need to get to the ocean more.

Crappies should be about as safe as you get. While they're technically predatory, they don't eat a lot of the filter feeders that accumulate the assloads of mercury or the larger baitfish/smaller predators that eat the filter feeders. 2-3 a week should be safe.
>>
>>1082922
You're probably right, the only other barrier I have is the muddy taste that's coming from the shithole I pull these fish from. I'm gonna try to get a few more this weekend and try soaking the fillets in milk or leaving the crappies in some clean water overnight.

Can anybody recommend me a really really long (7'6"+) light-action spinning rod that isn't a Fenwick? I would prefer a true fast action if not an x-fast, all the Fenwicks I've handled seemed slower than what they were listed as.

>>1082932
That's endemic of being from hot water typical of mid-summer catches. You can mitigate it by immediately getting them (preferably alive) into a cold, aerated livewell or at least on ice.

I've not had good luck soaking freshwater fish filets in anything, they tend to get mushy and unpleasantly textured.

I've worn out serveral okuma reels, they are fine and stuff, but it's like they for some reason are not made to be used, granted, I've used them alot, and for some tougher fishing than they are probably made for, but still. Bought a shishamo 4k sahara, and I literally can't break it, it doesn't care that I hurl rare spoons or +30gram bombardas into the sea from the coast 8hours in a row when I fish. I've had it for a couple of years and I'm really not holding back. I really like this reel.
>>

I think it's different from WPB to MIA. I'm sure you can find them, but this is also the area where the Gulfstream runs right along shore and it gets deep really fast and people will catch Dolphin off the pier.

Take your pick. I've got 6 Stratus V's (1000, 2500, 4000, 5000 spinning and their LH memecaster), an SLV 7/8 and a Sierra 4/5 fly reel, and Citrix "a" memecaster.

They all perform at about twice their price point, sometimes more (I'd put the SLV against a Lamson Remix or Liquid and it shits all over a Redington Behemoth).

>I've worn out serveral okuma reels
>it's like they for some reason are not made to be used,
>granted I've used them alot,
>and for tougher fishing than they are probably made for,
>but still

So to sum up, you bought light duty reels and used them for heavy duty saltwater fishing. They died because that's not what they were designed to do (imagine that), and somehow your bad decisions are the machinery's fault.
Then, when you finally sack up and buy a heavier duty reel made for the kind of fishing you actually do, the new reel lasts and lasts.

Such insight-who could have possibly foreseen this outcome?

>>1083078
In Skid's defense, it is a less immediate demise.

no, ive bought coastal spinning reels and used them to jig on the coast. Occationally with up to 40g jigheads but mostly just with spoons.
Jigging for cod up to and at a maximum of 3-4 kg's.

Which they absolutely should be able to survive when they are 4000/5000 reels

>>
>>1083197
You yourself said, and I quote:
>I've used them alot, and for tougher fishing than they are probably made for

So you have already admitted you knowingly exceeded the design specs.

Reels break when you do that, no matter what their brand or price point. You can wreck a Fin-Nor easy as pie if you catch something too big for the reel and are stupid about the way you bring it in, especially if you haven't done your part to maintain the reel.
I shouldn't have to tell you that salt's fucking hard on equipment. If you're not taking care of your shit, you have no one but yourself to blame when it breaks.

>Salt's pretty hard on equipment, did you make sure it was maintained properly?
> blah blah blah "mom's basement troll" and evading the question
Yeah no. We're done here.
That's not me being a brand fanboy, that's him being a retard.
He didn't learn after $200+ worth of real world education that he needs to rinse off and re-oil his reels if he wants them to last when fishing in salt.
So this one will break just like the ones before did-it's just a matter of time. And next time he'll blame Shimano for not making good quality shit because their stuff isn't retard-proof either.

>the drags always shit out
>>
>>1083267
I will blame anyone for making a shit tier reel if they break faster than an okuma thats for sure.

The reason i said i had used it for something it wasnt made to, is because i have been jigging with it, and its not a memecaster reel.
Id say any coastal reel that breaks after jigging for 3kg cod with 30-35gram spoons once a week for 3 months is a shitty reel, and ill stand by that any day.

Ive worn out 2 okuma reels in 6 months, while my shimano has survived for more than 3 years while being used more, and it has done way harder fishing than my okumas ever did.

I wont complain when my shimano dies, it has been a very good reel and i wouldnt expect it to survive for alot longer, its still fishing like a brand new reel though

Did i mention that the shimano and the okumas were in the same price range? less than 5$ apart.

New Penn 80s retail at $900 and used ones sell for for 250-350 all day long. The rod is a 130lb-rated Bluefin tuna rod. Those go for $700 new and go for well over $200 used
So you have an $1500 rig right there that you could turn around for $500-600 right now.
If it were me and I wanted to sell, I'd list it for $850 and take the first offer over $600.

I fish okuma reels and quite like them (makaira 15,andros 12,metaloid 12) the tolerances are perfect, drags are butter and truthfully other than some rash on them they should last a lifetime. I think the cheaper okuma reels are junkier and they use cheaper materials that arent made to last so long.

Had one of those giant tridactyl fuckers scare the living shit out of me earlier this week while trout fishing. I was stalking my way upstream and I had to pass under this tree and when I did a giant blue Herron took off from the branch a couple inches above my head. At first I thought the tree was falling down on top of me but then I saw those big ass wings and it took off. Wish I had my GoPro with me when it happened. The best shit always happens when I leave it home

I saw this guy in a lil creek and he darted upstream as soon as I saw him.
30 minutes later I see something low flying over the water and he just flies by. A shame my camera took its damn time taking the shot, could have gotten it as soon as it passed me like 4 feet away.

Sounds like exactly what happened to me. They are cool birds. I saw a green heron for the first time while pond fishing last month. I didn't have a clue what it was when I first saw it. It came and landed in a tree right over my shoulder. I kept on fly fishing and he didn't seem to mind me so he just chilled on the branch for a while. When I got home I figured out that it was indeed a green heron. I thought it was pretty interesting that they are one of few species of birds that will actually fish for their food. They take insects or twigs or what ever they think makes good bait and entice fish to the surface for an easy meal. Would be awesome to see in person

1st time i been to this creek back in early spring; void of fish life
this time; a school of white suckers and creek chubs in every hole.
even shallow areas will hold a bunch of lil chubs.

this creek does empty into a reservoir, so maybe they all hid in there? Seems odd how they vacate and occupy the lil creek if so. Life finds a way, I guess.

>>
>>1083799

>>
>>1083823
There's a lot of different ways to do it.

I like circle hooks or "drop shot" hooks (which are kinda like a circle hook) and just nose-hooking my plastic, but it's not good in heavy vegetation or if there's a lot of algae.

You can rig weedless with an EWG/offset worm hook too. Hurts the action but keeps you from snagging shit.

You can also wacky hook the plastic on a dropshot setup, and again I like circle hooks for this (you can also use "drop shot" hooks but you have to size up a little bit).

If you're trying to use a particularly fast-sinking worm or something I know people who will use the foam-headed "jigheads" designed for walleye fishing on a bottom bouncer to keep them up off the bottom. I'd rather just fish a floating worm if I'm having problems, a bubblegum pink or white floating power worm has caught me a LOT of fish on dropshot.

>Is it worth getting out there right after a big rainfall?
That is mother natures dinner bell.
>>
>>1084055
Reels list this because it's important to let the user know how much length they are getting for what diameter line

Because 20# is bigger than 10#, youll be getting less line on the reel with 20# when you fill the spool.

Usually the pound test - length listing on reels just assume you're using mono too. So if you're using braid you're using a high pound test but with a low diameter line.

I dont see why you're using 20lb mono anyways. Saltwater?
>>
>>1084055
If you're talking about mono I wouldn't suggest it. Your cast will be trash.

Not putting enough line on your reel will makes your cast shorter, and putting too much can cause your line to nest up.

Just remember if it's 20lb monofilament line, you won't be able to cast very far at all unless you have a bunch of weight on there. That's the main thing. Line capacity will be lower too but for shore fishing freshwater that's not a big deal. Also a reel made for 10lb line probably won't handle 20lb fish very well.

>>1083897
Wut does the fire & ice look like? I have those fat curly tail culprits in this tomato color that has a red center and chartruese outside and I have landed a couple nice bass on it.

A couple of those keepers I got the other day were Zoom trick worms in white, but it's a toss up between chart pepper and sprayed grass for my favorite Zoom color. When they're hittin chartruese, those kill it. But if they aren't, sprayed grass has enough blue and puple in it for murky water but is natural enough for clear water. I hit a peacock on a shitty day when they were being picky in crystal clear water with a sprayed grass lizard. I buy pretty much anything I find in those two colors.

>>1083826
Still haven't gotten much on Bubble Gum Trick Worms or those BG+Orange Yum Dingers. Tossed on a black Yamamoto in the same size and got some fish, then threw a pumpkin lookin colored MTB stick worm and got some too.

I'm not really a fan of the Yums for weightless wacky rigs. Other brands sink a little more and have a better wiggle. If you try and twitch the Yums, it just pulls em to the surface while Yamamotos and other brands will stay deeper.

Ahh I have seen that. I will pick up a pack next time I see em. When I googled "Culprit Worm" the next result was "Fire & Ice" so it must be one of their popular colors.

Pic related is "Tomato", and then I think I have another pack that is Chart-Chart, like the top is opaque chartreuse and the bottom is translucent. The Incredi Slim craws are still my favorite thing they make.

But did you notice the plastic they use seems more firm than others? I mean the baits have good movement, but they like to slide around on the hook more than softer baits, especially if you don't hook the tip of it perfectly on the offset part of the hook.

>>1084122
Sucks. Maybe the other ones got spooked when you hit the first one. I always wondered about that, especially like bigger bass that put up a fight. The fish nearby must notice it. Although the other night I did hook 6 keeper size LMB right in the same little spot.

Eh I'd say it's about the same as zoom. I haven't had any problems with them staying on the hook.

>The fish nearby must notice it.
I read somewhere that bass will put out a scent when they get caught that can turn off the other bass. I don't think they notice anything visually though. I mean other bass will chase a hooked bass hoping to get the lure he just ate.

Best reel in its class by far. Drag is excellent and if I had my 10wt (on their way. Bought a Red Predator and a Behemoth 10wt) I'd say you'd have no problems. I can pull in some big specks and stripers with the 8wt Behemoth with no problems. It's also incredibly saltwater safe.

This desu.

As a rule, when i fish the river mouth near me, while there is live food for the fish we are fishing for, lures are gonna be a bust 95% of the time. Only when the natural food source becomes scarce, can you fish lures there effectively.

How would someone go about doing this? I checked the tides last time I went and tried to fish when they were coming in/going out, but the water was only coming up about a foot, so I don't know how much effect that would have.

>but everyone knows that if you really want to catch fish you cannot go wrong if you fish with what they're eating.
Mostly don't use live stuff cause it's a pain to haul around, and since I'm not going to eat what I catch I feel kinda bad killing something for entertainment. But I'm probably gonna get some kind of baitfish next time I go.

Also getting another yak so I can fish the canals at night since that's the only time I catch something that isn't a hard head or a ladyfish.

find out what they're eating. ask at the bait shop, or try asking a pro (dnr etc) about specific waterbodies
reading the charts will give you clues as to where interesting structure. tidal shit is awesome because there is usually two different interest parts to structure areas, whereas the river only has one pool per hole typically.
>>
>tfw you get some cool Zoom colors after they have been mixed in a bag with other soft baits

I think the two green ones were sprayed grass and the lighter trick worm might have been bubblegum.

Never caught them. I think some of the canals in Dade still have them, but the Mayans basically replaced bluegill around here.

I was reading somewhere awhile ago that oscars used to be really widespread but then there was a cold winter a few years back and it killed them off most places and the Mayans survived it and took over.

What's your favorite sunfish that you catch, not including a "bass" although do say if one isn't your favorite.

>Overall favorite
Crappie very pretty fish, and can get big. Make pond fishing worth it.
>Best looking
Pumpkin seeds
>Best tasting
Haven't eaten any myself but would like to hear others'
>Least favorite
Green sunfish. Typically a bit ugly looking honestly. Too aggressive at times.

Caught a nice trout this morning. Just got into trout fishing this summer. I never even knew they hit lures, I always thought it was for fly fishing.
>>
>>1084459
You're going to really shitty spots. Much like how some ponds rarely produce good fish, there are many saltwater spots that rarely produce anything at all. Some saltwater hotspots are going to be inlets, piers and the flats. Spillways can also be super productive.

>minorities
Most of them are unskilled fishermen that can only produce fish on live bait. They usually just pick a spot and sit there until a dumb fish hits a shrimp on their poorly tied rigs.
>>
>>1084645
It's pretty interesting to get one on a crankbait that size. They do hit big lures. Especially when they're big enough. But yes they do also like flies.
Just a reminder that trout are fragile compared to bass, if you're CnR
>>
>>1084648

>>1084647
I have been to a bunch of different spots. I was at the inley last night.

>>1084652
That one is pretty. All I ever get down here are the shitty basic bluegill that are almost white with the faint 3 vertical stripes.

>>1084644
Where are you from that you consider crappie as sunfish?

If that's the case, Mayans are sometimes called "atomic sunfish" and they are more fun to catch than typical bluegill. Pic related was a decent sized one, they fight hard and love to run you back and forth parallel to shore.

Up north tho I think it's a tie between green sunfish and pumpkinseeds. Green sunfish are fun because they have that big mouth and can actually hit a variety of baits. Pumpkinseeds have small mouths but a lot of times when I would hook one, it would be a big palm sized guy.
>>
>>1084650
Catch n release, lol. Nothing wrong with fishing cranks btw. Try small rapalas for trout.
Overall, don't lip them like bass, use a net to capture them and keep them in the water as you remove the hook (I roll barbless for all species now) just look online for more specifics

And since you called crappie a sunfish, what about yellow perch? Those are the best to eat.
>>
>>1084658
Sunfish is a familyof fish, crappie and basses fall under it. Yet I don't call crappie "sunnies" ofc, like you meant
>>
>>1084658
Officially, sunfish incorporates all perciform fishes

>all perch
>crappie
>bream family (bluegill, pumpkinseed, shellcracker, longear, green, etc)

Perch aren't in the sunfish family.

>>1084879
I'm hoping to getup and go out early on the yak, but we'll see if I can manage to get up.

>>1084886
Add a trailer hook, or a smaller trailer.
>>
If I build a panfish setup it's probably good for trout too, right? I wanna catch crappies in the mudhole river near me, but 45 minutes away is this great crystal-clear river stocked with trout.
Looking at Pflueger President spooled with 6lb Mono and Croix Panfish right now but open to suggestions
>>
>>1084910
Most definitely, yeah.

I would unironically take a Fenwick 7' light or UL action over the St Croix Panfish though.
>>
>>1084886
Sometimes when they do that, you can try for a reaction bite. Like running a rattler past real quick since it has a couple trebles so you could hook them from one little nip.

>>1084910
Wut size for the President? That 30 is pretty nice, a tiny bit smaller than most medium reels. And for crappie and trout it should be straight as long as you aren't running super super light stuff for either but 1/16oz to 1/4oz should cast ok on that.
>>
So I'm taking a friend fishing tomorrow who has never been.

How can I ensure he has a good time if we don't catch anything? I'm afraid he will be bored with all the down time.
>>
>>1084908
Does fishbrain really work? I'm always hesitant to download the app
>>
>>1084912
>>1084913
thanks, I was thinking 25 or 30 but I'll go for the 30.

>>1084920
bring some good food, explain to him about cover and structure. Boat or shore?
>>
>>1084924
shore, we'll be walking down a bank
>>
>>1084921
Its just a social site to share fishes and locations if you want to. It's only gonna be good if the people around you post the locations and lures they were using. I usually put the body of water I was in, but I'll never put the exact location and I might put the lure I use.
>>
>>1084927
Fuck that
>>
>>1084625
Looking at this makes me wanna organize my fly box. I shuffled it around all to shit last week while nymphin for smallies.
>>
>>1084920
Bring bait. Catfish nuggets, chicken gizzards, cutbait of any variety, shrimp or mullet(if you're in salt or brack). Also pack some good food, beers and gatorade, and possibly a small portable speaker for music. Talk to him about fishing and explain things and learn him something.
>>
So for Thanksgiving I'm visiting some family in Kentucky. My grandparents live near a great spot for musky and spots and I can barely tolerate my family aside from my Mom. Should I take one of my fly rods? I'd like to have a way to be away from them while I'm there.
>>
>>1084927
>tfw the only people who use it near me are catfishermen who fish exclusively the Mississippi
A listing goes like this:
>caught this 40lb blue today
>in the Mississippi
>on live bluegill
Like, okay, good for you but the fucking river's nearly 2000 fucking miles long and EVERYBODY who fishes for big cats uses live bluegill and you didn't tell me shit about technique.
>>
>>1084942
I like my family and I still bring my gear when I visit.
>>
>>1084935
lol I keep trying to organize mine, but I have my choice of "everything looks really pretty but I can only fit like 6 buggers and a few ants" and "it looks like a bag of smashed assholes but holds 90 flies". I keep choosing the 90 flies.
>>
>>1084956
Lol my problem is I'll have a good order going after I tie but then I'll go out fishing or my tying meet up will end and I just throw shit everywhere in the box in no order or reason. I don't really have trouble finding shit but it looks like a kid with downs put everything in there.
>>
>>1084912
Looking into it, it seems the 7'-6" UL only comes in 2p which I'm not a huge fan of, I've got a rod tube anyways.

So I think I just assembled the most offensively unaesthetic rod setup possible.
>black and yellow rod
>black and red reel
>bubblegum pink line
What's the gayest fish found in fresh water? I wanna go catch it with this.
>>
>>1084962
Oh, also, this rod has two triggers on it, for extra triggering.
>>
>>1084962
Go bunker snagging.
>>
>>1084962
Rainbow Trout

Orra SX?
>>
>>1084962
Maybe koi or rainbow trout.
>>
>>1084965
lol no, Lews Carbon Fire. Snagged it for $10 out of the defect bin because some retard spooled it backwards because it's a lefty reel (I still have no idea how, you can't turn the anti-reverse off, only thing I can think is he pulled the spool out the side of the reel), and it's on the rod I also snagged out of the defect bin for $5 because the reel seat came unglued (fixed with 5 cents' worth of superglue). And it's spooled with $3 worth of 40lb Gliss from Gander going out of business.

>>1084965
>>1084966
>7'6" MH x-fast
>rainbow trout
Gonna send them flying! Off to Montauk I go!
>>
>>1084968
>$10
>Spooled it backwards
Wut? Jesus. Like they put the line on so it came thru the guide and went under the spool?

And I was gonna say taking off the sideplate, pulling out the spool, and then getting the line out the side of the reel makes it so you can tie your arbor knot or whatever free and clear of all that other shit.

After typing that I just realized how he did it. Took the spool out and wound it by hand or some shit? Why? I mean I guess somebody else's retardation is your gain. It must have been babby's first memecaster but even then you would have to be pretty retarded to do that.
>>
>tfw 1:30am
Should I stay up until sunrise n try to hit the inlet while the minorities are sleeping?

Or should I finish watching this movie and then sleep til 1pm and waste my whole Sunday anyway?

Baitfish with it.
>>
>>1084973
Finish the movie then go fishing.
>>
>>1084972
Yeah that's my guess on what happened. The line was coming off the bottom of the spool, and was all mashed up in the worm gear for the levelwind so he also missed the eye on the levelwind.

It was also spooled with some ridiculously thick mono, looked like Trilene Big Game (which isn't bad by any means, but a bit stiff), if I had to guess it was either 35 or 40lb mono. Only had about 50 yards on the spool and it was overfilled at that. It was also tied off through the drain holes in the spool instead of arbor knotted around it so it was dragging on the spindle.

Either babby's first memecaster or someone that doesn't fish was trying to set it up as a gift. I'm betting the latter since it's normally a $70 reel and we sell some $30 Quantums that usually end up being babby's first memecaster.

Kek I like tying around the hole in the spool. Makes it so I never have to worry about it slipping, even with braid. But it's never touching anything moving, just thru one hole and out the one next to it.

I wish sunrise wasn't so late here, damn near 7am. Whether or not I go to sleep, my day is totally fucked tomorrow. The pier is open 24hrs right now so I could go post up there right now. Got kicked out of the inlet last night at like midnight since park closed at 11pm

Yes.
That's the nice thing about panfish rigs. They do double duty as trout rigs when you go to a trout stream.
