So I crashed my baiku a few months ago and now I'm looking for a shop to take a look at it and give me an estimate on how much repairs would cost. Went to a dealer and they told me $275 to inspect the bike, what the fuck? Is this how much it is?
>>
>>17633372
If dealer flat rate is 100 bucks an hour it may well be. Many people get estimates then fix damage themselves and the dealers want their chunk of revenue. Insurance should pay for the estimate.

If you plan on fixing it yourself let the dealer or independent shop know. Sympathetic inspectors can be your friends.

Well, I didn't crashed it, someone else rear ended me and caused me to crash. Their adjuster offered me $500 to repair the bike but I know that's not enough for all the repairs. Anyone know if I can just take the bike and let them sort it out with the other person's insurance?

S2R's arent bad. Ive got a 695.

The green frame means its been dissassembled so expect it to have probably been wrecked(swapped for clipons kind of confirms this)

I cant recommend ducati enough most satisfying powerband out there. But find another one.

SSS and Marchezini wheels are baller on this one tho.

>tfw dropped bike for first time yesterday in my 8 years of riding

Was riding on my parents dirt/gravel driveway going about 20kmph and their fucking dog bolted in front. I slowed down but swerved/skidded into the side of the bushes lining the driveway.

Wouldnt have dropped it if I could have put my foot down on that side, but the bush was in the way so it slowly tipped into the soft dirt. No damage at all to anything but my feels.
>>
>>17633372
Find another shop. They should only charge an hour inspection, which can range from 100-150 depending on the dealer.

I take my bike to a small independant shop. They specialize in ducati and moto-guzzi, but work on everything and charge literally half of what the dealer does for most jobs.

Went to check when my first aid kit expires. As I pulled it out, with it came a screw I didn't snap a pic of. I got to wrenching and learned three things
-My SV650S has rubber cushions holding rear frame cover sides to the rear center in an H shape meaning I had to slam that thing back into position if I wanted to sleep tonight
-I still don't know where that bolt was supposed to go, and I went through the entire catalog. I put it somewhere near the rear light, it's now probably holding the plastic under the rear light electronics to the metal just to the side. (On the other side there's an identical screw in a position not symmetrical to the one I found empty, but with the same purpose)
-putting the rear cover on as one piece over the new oversized R/R is possible, but a massive bitch to do. I hope I don't need to do it again anytime soon.

On the plus side, two issues I didn't know I had are now fixed and I only need to replace the medkit in Oct '18.

This one uses two layers, hard protector shell with the airbag sandwiched underneath pressing against you. The hard armor is also upgradeable. Though I don't know how to read the safety standards don't think it gets much better than this. I really wanted the neck stabillization though. Also include bonus rib and kidney protection along with chest airbag.

No no no. I never hurt anyone besides the guy that caused my totaled 90mph motorcycle crash back in September 2016. He was suspicious in that he hid from the cops and ambulance afterwards and like I said he caused it in majority. I more than mainly hurt myself otherwise my whole life. I've gotten physical with my dad, mom, and brother before but the police standoff was a barricaded-in-room suicide standoff. It was pretty impressive they mobillized SWAT, ESU, locked down two schools for 5 hours and the nearby streets, and had dozens of cops with AR-15s. My mom said they told them they were using non-lethal. The BB guns were for an attempted suicide by cop 3 days prior to the armored truck incident which resulted in getting tased in the heart, but the psychiatrists decided to send me home the next morning. Suicide by cop or motorcycle into brick wall are my most obsessive suicide plans, the others being exit bag and heroin overdose.

If you want me to elaborate more I dont mind, but just know we might get banned for it.

What specifically? I've been in inpatient 30 times so it really doesn't bother me anymore. First complaints that come to my mind about wards are roommates, disgustingly filthy or annoyingly ill people, mediocre food, very slow processing and system loopholes, the pill pushing, forced injections, and the boredom especially. The boredom will get to you. My drug problem got exponentially worse thanks to pill pushing doctors. They're incredibly easy to manipulate into giving you amphetamines or benzos. Even opiods by just constantly complaining. I would just pass the time in there getting high, lying in bed depressed, eating, and masturbating to cartoon network, mainly Teen Titans Go. Though Gumball is pretty enjoyable.
>>
>>17636831
Is the paint chips from the helmet dropping or a crash?

If just a helmet drop I would keep wearing it. The foam is what saves your head in a crash, the outside shell is more or less just there to keep the foam in place. A couple paint chips wont really damage that.

If you crashed though it needs to be replaced 100%.

Probably best to replace it. If the impact was hard enough to knock holes in the outer shell, the inner styrofoam shit has probably been deformed too.

Like I said in >>17636743 what happened to it. Helmets work by absorbing energy with the foam construction on the inside. The outside is just a shell, albeit just as important.

I'm having baiku problems. Bike starts fine and idles ok but starts puttering as it warms up. The real problems comes if I give it gas. When I let off it putters again then dies. This happens without fail unless I let the bike warm up until the coolant is around 180F. After that no problems and the bike rides fine. Could this be a FI problem, maybe the pump?

thats just such a stupid KO criteria

imagine you could get a 2008 990 Superduke R for that money or some ER6N, both with the same mileage but the ER6 is from 2012.

Youd seriously take the budget bike just because its "newer"?

It's up to yourself, m8. The chances of you getting into a crash are pretty low. Even lower that when you do crash you'll impact on that particular part of the helmet again. Lower again that any damage you've done to the helmet will make much difference.

But then again we are talking about your head/brain here. Risk is yours to take.

thaanks for the info, first time someone mentioned trying that. It seems to idle fine with the choke on for a cold start, (although the cold start choke idle is different than choke closed going down the road, I have to stop and twist the screw like 3 times or the bike will die with the clutch in) and it seems to calm down with the idle jumping after an hour of riding, but it's the only real problem the bike has after fixing it up.

bike newfag here. I just finished and passed my MSF class. I'm going on a trip with a friend to ride around the mountainous region of india (I think it's part of the himalayas).

I need to get a helmet (well I don't need to but I would rather have my own), does /dbt/ have any recommendations? I'm poor but I would like one of the full-face ones where the chin as well as the visor can go fully up. when I tried the full-face during my training class with the shield down it fogged my glasses. any tips to avoid this?

also any other general trip/touring tips? I know I'm going to be on some cheap shitty rental bike. should I try to get one of those helmet coms things? I'm getting a water bladder to keep hydrated, and I have some gloves already.

feel free to tell me this should be it's own thread but it seems as an /o/utsider this is where all the bikefags are at.

Head shape is just as important as size and you can only really judge that by trying the helmet on. Keep it on your head for 5 mins or more to see if there are any pressure points. Then do a roll off test to see if it really fits your head.

NYPD told me themselves they deliberately target sport riders over harley/cruisers. There are many reasons why, but while I imagine the chrome crowd to get along with the fuzz sport riders definitely are the cops most hated of all. Make that a nigger on a sportbike/dirtbike and you got some high blood pressure warnings.

I don't know where you're at but cops hate bikers over here.

Bring a sweater in the middle of summer. I can't tell you how many times I've been caught after dark/at altitude and been grateful. Rain gear if you have room, or if fall/winter/spring.
Learn to pack a decent lunch. If you don't like sandwiches, weeb out and buy lunchboxes from daiso or whatever's local. Order the big sandwich at the roadside deli, eat the other half further down the trail.
Buy a Nalgene brand nalgene. It's the universal fit for riverbank filters. And doesn't shatter or leak.
Buy a Thermos or Stanley brand thermos. Steel, vacuum insulated. That bitch will keep your coffee hot for more than 24 hours if you brew straight into it. I recommend two, two cup, pourover cones and freshly ground beans so the coffee stays fresh tasting for as long as possible.
Buy two portable battery sticks. And a paper (laminated) map anyway. Check directions manually and learn how street, highway, and exit numbering work.
Learn to like gas station food. Even if you don't plan scenic stops, use every fill as an opportunity to stretch legs, piss, smoke, whatever. Remember to take your helmet off, because the weight creeps up on you.
Hydrate at EVERY PULL OFF. I straight drink at least 500ml every time I stop for any reason. I'd rather lose time pissing than lose time in hospital. Drink at least one Gatorade/powerade/vitamin water per day. The salt helps your body retain the water.
Send a mock up to somebody (pic related). If you're going alone, periodically send dumb pictures home too. It tells the police where to look.

Revzilla is a good site for online buying. They have video reviews of gear, free returns of all products.

I have the HJC RPHA ST helmet. It's tight as FUCK on my head but after a month or two of wearing it, it became comfortable. I probably could have gone a size up because my chin sometimes feels like it's hanging out a tiny bit, but it's fine.

https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/hjc-rpha-st-rugal-helmet

I'd definitely suggest going to a store and trying on a bunch of helmets though. The helmet I linked comes with a Pinlock visor to eliminate fog, which imo is a must have.

yeah I got a lightweight daypack that I'm going to put a water bladder into with a hose and all.

which brings up another issue which I forgot to post about: strapping cargo to the bike. this is like motorcycle diaries shit, so I'm taking everything with me. I have a semi-stiff rolling backpack that will have all my trip luggage in it, any tips for strapping it to the back? I know I'm not supposed to put much weight on my actual body because that would throw my balance off, but anything other than buy a cargo net and try to tie that shit down as tight as possible?

An integrated visor is part of the helmet so you can't buy it seperately. If you get a UV shield then you'll need to also carry a clear one in case you need to ride in the dark.
>>
>>17637302
Basically every single visor made of polycarbonate (i.e. every single one) blocks UV better than an UV-coated lense ever could.
My transitions don't even work under my visor which is the best indication you can have.
Most touring helmets come with a sunvisor that you can use independently of the visor proper/

Shell out a little more. Get a touring helmet with built in visor and an included pinlock (that's the word for the double visor they're referring to).
Related. They do so-so in the states so you can find a kabuto on clearance regularly. Domestically they're solid, so don't worry about finding one in the future.

Today's work -> home ride was fucked up. I got lost in thoughts and passed on the red light. Then I got lost (no smartphone because they are watching), found myself on a familiar square with a crazy traffic scheme, had to switch 4 lanes in the middle of the jam. Then I stalled at a traffic light. Then I missed my turn and had to make a u-turn and use an adjacent street. All these in 25 minutes. Not my day

yeah seems kabuto isn't that expensive, but is there anything wrong with buying something cheaper like this for my first helmet?

it has the features I want, it's DOT approved (don't know how much that means vs "better" helmets but I'm not going high speed so maybe that's ok?), and it's a nice plain color

I have a paper atlas in my backpack. I didn't want to stop because I knew that eventually I will got to one of the surrounding familiar places.
I've started driving only recently. Turns out being on foot / public transport in nothing like driving. City is huge (15 mil) and some of it's neighbourhoods are a complete mystery to me. Although I know all the main highways and won't get hopelessly lost even with no map.
>>
>>17637449

I have never heard of IV2 and with a helmet I wouldn't skimp. Not to say it's necessarily a bad helmet, but we're talking about your brain here the helmet is not something you want to skimp on. HJC, Bell, Icon, Kabuto all have good value helmets.

I personally would also never wear a modular helmet and I certainly wouldn't ride with the face up. Full face feels much more secure. Whether or not there's a statistical difference in safety idk, someone else might know, but personally it feels like an unnecessary risk. Unless you like to smoke while you ride.

from my experience in training using both full-face and totally open the main concerns I have is ventilation, not only because of my glasses but also because of the heat where I will be riding, it can be quite chilly or hot there. I liked open-face more but I was going slow around a course, I also saw my instructors use modular totally open when riding though again they were going slow. right now I think I'm just between full-face modular or open with an integrated visor. thanks for the good brands ino though.

As someone who owns a modular I wouldn't really recommend them either. The only real use I've had for the modular part of it is that with it open I can actually flex the helmet open more than a solid helmet and pull it over my radar dish ears with less pain.

Don't go open face. Your chin/mouth/nose is valuable and even a crash at low speeds could leave you with it bust open, permanent scars and no teeth.

If you need ventilation just flip your visor fully open. You've got glasses on so you're not going to be blinded by an insect although you might want to be wary of small rocks if you're following another vehicle.

I think an Enfield will come with bars on the sides of the pillon. Learn a square knot, a clove hitch, and you'll think it's silly when you have learnt, but stack two half hitches on everything to secure the knots on your mountain roads.
Practice a little so you can visually recognize an improperly done knot and you'll be fine with any rope. Or strap. Or chord. All three of those work on any scale, flat or round.

Clips are best if you're not doing a flip down. Motorbike glasses are only worth it if you get it in your script or have good vision.
