>Motorcycle Questions & Answers

I know the Ninja 650 and the SV650 are both commonly recommended intro bikes, but I when I realized just how similar they are, I started getting curious about their differences and the implications those could have for someone choosing between them.

here's what I see so far:
>sv slightly more tucked than ninja
>ninja has banana seat, sv has separate
>sv has 90 degree v-twin, ninja has parallel twin
>sv makes a little more hp (70 to 64?) and so has a bit more top speed (130 to 135 mph?)
>sv is 30 lb lighter (437 to 465 lb)
>sv has 50 more miles of range and a little better mpg
>ninja is fully faired, sv has bikini fairing or naked (think there might be a naked ninja but don't think it's sold in the US)

the torque seems about the same, and which one looks better basically comes down to how you feel about fairings I guess.

which one would you pick if you had the money and the choice? It seems to me like the SV pretty much cleans things up - but then again, people buy and ride cruisers, so maybe I'm missing something. How big of a difference is the engine configuration?

I don't know about the newest models, but I've ridden older naked versions of both and they're honestly pretty identical. I like the SV better because
1) carbed ones are cheap as fuk
2) I don't like the look of the exposed shock on the Ninja

But if I had found a Ninja 650 first I'd probably be happily riding that now.

I bought the SV650s this winter, it's my first year riding

I love it, I store my insurance and registration in the pillon seat, although the seat may also come off on the ninja, I haven't rode one before though.

The seat even on the S version is comfy enough to ride on for an hour and a half at a time, although I'm looking at clip-on risers eventually. The position is upright enough, but I tend to ride up close to the tank. The only problem is on 1.5 hour+ rides the seat hurts my 6'0" 140 lbs ass.

$2,600 for a 2005 and it's plenty fast and maneuverable to keep me happy for a long time. Cheap insurance and a very versatile bike.

How many other bikes in the Duke's price range have a color dash? The damn things probably aren't even that expensive, but manufacturers insist on putting shitty 2 color dashes in instead. Even Moto Guzzi managed to do something interesting with theirs by putting Bluetooth on the V7 III so you can hook your phone up to the bike.

The S20 is a great street tyre. You've got to run lower pressures in them than the pirellis (firmer sidewall), but once you figure out what's working you get better grip from them.
>>
>>17186034
>120/70

Did you say back tyre?, that sounds like a front to me

I also recommend a Bridgestone S21, they stick like chewing gum in hair

>>

S21 is really expensive doe, the S20 isnt all that worse, features the same 5 compound tech and is a lot cheaper to get.
>>
>>17186091

If you're going to run the s20 (more likely the s21, not many s20s left), run a 190/55 instead if you've got the space/it'll fit your rim. Handling will be better, the 180 will be a bit twitchy.

ive tried it and the tire felt wobbly under brakes and coming out of corners unless you jacked the pressure up to the point it just felt too hard and lost grip
>>
>>17186102
>Handling will be better

not really. It will be more stable and get more grip (as if youd need that) but harder to handle.
>>
>>17186101
They are expensive but its worth it for the grip

I never had a set of S20's but went straight to the 21's as i read that the 20's were good but wore quickly in the middle of the tyre and that the 21 is the same tyre but more durable in the middle

>>
>>17186121
>the sidewalls aren't designed for this shit and reduces stability

If the tyre is too big for the rim, yeah. If it's not, then it's fine. Check your rim size and the bridgestone guide.

I did a 120/70 180/55 and a 190/55 and the latter combination just works out better. One of the tyre guys reckoned a 120/60 if you go the former, but I never bothered.
>>
>>17186134

They're all honestly a bit long in the tooth unless you're racing pre-modern.

Consider some of the pre-2010 bikes, the r6s cost, but you can pick up gsxr750s for cheap now that they aren't in a competitive class anymore.
>>
are there any street leather jackets with a back protector reaching all the way to the bottom?
>>
>>17186135

If you're not sure what tyre is best suited for your bike use this checker, if you're bike is on the list it will say which is the proper size

http://www.bridgestone.ie/moto/
>>
>>17186134
R6 or the GSXR
R6 is newer and might be a bit easier to get things for but it depends on the condition of each

>>17186148
a track bike and a race bike serve different purposes
I would look at it as a learning platform rather than a competitive machine and 90s sports bikes still offer a lot of quality, they're not as fast as a modern sports bike but they're not exactly slow
>>
>>17186161
yeah ive got the proper size, i have options between R, R G and R J. Don't know the difference between them
>>
>>17186173
>I would look at it as a learning platform rather than a competitive machine

Then you'll want something more modern. The older ones will throw mechanical issues at you to boot, which you don't need when you're learning to go fast.
>>
>>17186135

R just means "radial" which is how its built internally.

not sure but i think the J and G variants are meant for specific bikes, probably the tires they are sold with.

I'm completely fine with mechanical stuff and I'd be doing a full inspection/service before and after every excursion. Was just curious which might be the best option. I think I'll go with the r6.
>>
>>17186194

Compare a late 90s - 00's sports bike to a brand new one and the only differences you will see are power, weight and computer assistance.

A good track bike doesn't need cutting edge technology, it just needs enough performance to work on your skills without being limited by the bike. A late 90's/00's sports bike will definitely not limit anyone short of a prodigy from practicing their technique for a while. Focus on your own lap times not what the guy next to you is doing. These bikes will have enough adjustment to set up the bike for yourself and will have plenty enough performance to let you work on your track skills.
Having a bike capable of cornering at 70 instead of 65 or having 150hp instead of 120 isn't going to make you a better rider, being able to get the bike to behave like you need it to closer to its limit will and sports bikes from around 2000s definitely offer this.

The biggest thing they miss out on though is computer control which could turn a crash into a close call but you should be taking a gradual approach to track riding..

Well well well, it is almost confirmed my buddies' R6 will be an insurance write off.

Needs new subframe, front fairing, maybe new triple tree and a bunch of random shit here and there.

I'm hyped to see if he'd like sell the remains, I'm pretty sure I can eBay this one back to track and street duty in no time.

Aside from maintenance issues I'm interested to hear what you advantage you think a newer bike will give someone learning to improve their riding. Not competing with other people, but their own riding. Let's say I'm not talking earlier than 1995 and you are talking from around 2005 onward, right?

I could go on about new and older bikes alike bending valves or shitting their bearings or blowing gaskets, but maintenance issues are too variable to say a 2000ish bike is going to blow up as soon as you start riding it on the track, you are arguably always going to need to replace parts, and less likely to have them on a newer bike but they certainly aren't immune. Do the maintenance and it won't happen for a seriously long time, it will take a weekend to a week to get the whole engine done if nothing is really wrong.

I can't comment on any bikes prior to 2000 but I can say that the three bikes I own 2002, 2003, and 2005 have never experienced any kind of problem you would expect related to age. Then again, it might just be because they are god mode GSXRs. The only maintenance work I have had to perform was replacing the steering head bearing on my 03 which is pushing 35k miles. Not bad for nearly 15 fucking years of sitting. So unlike most people, I am pretty biased when it comes to the old bike vs new bike debate. I see literally no reason to buy a newer bike in this day and age. It's not like gyroscopic physics change from year to year. The overall geometry from year to year remains virtually the same. The only real distinction I would make from "old bikes" and "new bikes" is fuel injection but that started as early as 1999 in the 750s.

tl;dr youre a fuccboi if you buy a new bike. ABS/TC/Rider Modes are complete memes reserved for redditors

Carbs are incredibly easy to maintain with a few simple, relatively inexpensive tools.

Really late to this party but

Comparing 95' to 05' you can find improvements in literally everything:

>suspension
>braking
>weight distribution
>steering
>fuel economy
>tire sizes sometimes (120/60 and 170/60 pls go)
>bikes can be up to 20 more powerful, see the CBR family.

Weight shavings and horsepower increments you can see on a spec chart, but the more subtle and IMO important things like suspension, steering and brake feel you have to ride the bikes to fully appreciate. They can be massive over a 10 or 15 year period.

The TC on some modern bikes can be a very useful learning tool, although if you want to go balls out you'll probably find yourself wanting to disable it soon enough. There's a reason why "track mode" is a thing.

But that's racetrack stuff. Some say the VFR750 is the best bike ever made. I think F4i's are pretty amazing and I s-s-secretly think R1200GSs are cool b-b-but don't tell anyone

Traction Control is necessary to ride the new 1000s fast. If you think you don't need it, then you're just a slow street rider who truly doesn't know anything. There's a reason you can adjust the intervention levels and still slide the bike into and out of turns.

Of course no one needs it on the street, but it's a cheap safety measure. Same for mortals at the race track. Just like ABS, if it's set properly then it doesn't kick in unless you need it to.

You don't sound like a beginner to me

I am definitely a beginner and I was thinking of getting a 300, but after talking to some rider friends and doing some research I'm getting a 650.

How fast is traffic on your highways? Are you commuting or carving? My understanding is that handling a small bike through twisties is as much fun as you can have with your clothes on, but getting blown around like a feather on a freeway is uncomfortable and 70-75 mph leaves you not a lot of wiggle room. I'm familiar with driving a 3 cylinder geo metro at those speeds and it's scary entering a left-side on-ramp in traffic with shit-all for acceleration. I'd rather have more power if I have do it exposed on a bike.

What kind of dirt bikes anon?

I had about 6 years experience on dirt bikes before I got my first street legal motorcycle, which was just a 1980's 200cc dual sport shitbike. I rode that for a couple of years, then upgraded to a 650cc dual sport which will really do just about any kind of riding you want with appropriate tires.

I'm at a total of 13 years riding experience now and just starting to get some bigger road bikes, 1200cc cruisers and 80's 750cc sports. I thought adjusting from the dual sport to road bikes would be hard, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easily I adapted. Honestly the hardest jump I've had was from the 200cc dual sport to the 650cc. I feel like I'll be ready for a modern 600 class sport soon, but I also hold myself to a pretty high skill standard. Plenty of retards just grab a 600 sport as their first bike and most of them don't die, even if they're shitty riders.

If you want an actually good bit of film about motorbikes, watch "TT3D: Closer to the Edge".

It's a documentary, but very well done and has a lot of incredible footage. Don't worry about the 3D thing, it's fine in regular old 2D.
>>
>>17187506
I'm just not good in traffic and want something basic that won't get me into too much trouble. I'm 6'0 and 220 but I'm much more comfortable on a 230 air cooled dirt bike as opposed to a 250 race bike. I like riding a bike comfortably at it's limits instead of uncomfortably at it's idle.
Traffic a shit, 55 zone but people do 70 all the time. Lots of bro trucks doin the ol bob and weave.
There would be a few twisties but mostly non interstate highway.
Even a Honda or Kawasaki 650 dual sport sounds good, i would probably be really comfy with the handling even though it's not as good as some on the road, but ninjas are cheaper.

If you're used to dirtbikes and worried about getting something "too powerful", look around for a good price on a used XR650L.

Air cooled, very dirt capable, familiar riding position, etc. Easy transition from strict dirt bikes. I upgraded to this from a 1982 XL200R and it only took me a couple hundred miles to get comfortable on it.

I have other bikes now, but this one will always be bae. I've put about 18,000 miles on it since I bought it in 2011(?) and I love the thing. That's a pretty even mix of 80mph interstate riding, in town commuting, and pure off road.

You can get them pretty cheap and they're outrageously easy to maintain. In the time I've owned it, all I've had to do to it besides regular maintenance is

- New plug boot (old one dried out and tore)
- New CDI box (known fault of these, 10 minute fix)
- Replaced swingarm pivot bolt (my fault, sunk it and never greased it after)

All easy, all cheap.

c'mon man, there's loads of bikes that will fit your needs better. If you didn't kill yourself launching yourself off some cliff after 13 years of offroading, you can be confident in your throttle control on a streetbike.

plus, take this scenario which actually happens more than it should.
two cars merge into you at the same time, you can't brake because there's cars behind you, you can't go left or right due to the merging idiots. And you can't go forward since you're throttle is fully open on your 300cc bike.

It's tempting, but I'm planning a handful of 4-5 day trips this year and I'm already kind of running on the edge of how much time I can take off from my job before my employer starts looking at me funny.

If I can get my project car sold before then, maybe. Just maybe.

The only bike I have that would be comfortable enough for me to run that kind of distance without stopping to rest every 60-100 miles would be my '82 Gold Wing. I guess it'd be kind of fun though.
>>
>>17187864
No one's gonna judge you for bringing a Goldwing, close to half the people coming so far have cruisers
>>
>>17187506
Yeah because a 300 is in any way comparable to a Geo Metro for acceleration you tard.

>>17187836
>plus, take this scenario which actually happens more than it should.
Just slightly more than never, particularly if you aren't dicking around in the middle lane waiting to get run into
>you can't brake because there's cars behind you
That's not how roads work.

I guess this would be a pretty rad ride. I'm not a huge fan of riding on interstates. They're always less fun roads, and they usually have worse scenery than lesser highways. Wind is a lot more fatiguing at 80 than it is at 55-60 too.

That's 8 days of riding at 10 hours a day, which is pretty rough.

If I sucked it up and took the interstate route it would be like 6 days at 10 hours a day.

I guess I could just say fuck it, quit my job which I hate anyway, and leave like beginning of July to just explore my way East. I probably have enough in savings to cover the trip and however long it would take me to find a new job.

God damnit, I shouldn't do that...

How can you call that a skid plate Honda.
>>
>>17187962

First things first.

Start pinching your pennies. Eat beans, rice, crock pot chicken thighs and shit. You can eat dirt cheap if you apply yourself. Stop buying anything you don't absolutely need, and think about what that means. Cancel your cable subscription, move to a pay-as-you-go phone plan for $40 a month or something. Put every spare dime into savings that you aren't spending on utilities, rent, or food into savings.

Sell all your stupid shit. Your game consoles, figurines, guns (besides maybe a single handgun and long gun), whatever over crap you've accumulated that you can get more than a few bucks for.

Buy a motorcycle and gear. Start riding it regularly and learn how to do all the basic maintenance. If you get a jap bike you'll only need like 10 tools to do most things.

When your lease runs out, take anything you can't replace for dirt cheap and store it with family or worst case get a small storage unit and pre-pay like 6-12 months.

Then just leave, man. Go explore your world for a few months. Couchsurfing.org is your ally, or maybe there's a better alternative now. Idk. You can find safe, comfortable, free places to camp too just about anywhere if you're paying attention.

Take as long as you need. You'll know when you're ready to come back to "regular life". You don't even have to go back where you started, maybe just start a new life in a new city.

You'll be a better person for the experience.

I spent 5 months on the road, and about $600-700 during that time. I was comfy most of the time, never went hungry, and nothing bad happened to me.

Maybe it's time I took my own advice and did it again. I've been itching to for a while. Current excuses include waiting for my wife to pay off her student debt, and waiting for all the estate crap to be over from a death in the family earlier this year. There's a non-zero chance that'll all be done by July, so we'll see.

Most insurance companies in the US will allow buybacks or settle for giving you a bit less for the wreck and letting you keep it. Most people don't ask because most people aren't mechanics.

The insurance company retains "totals" to sell at auction, but they have to pay to transport, store and sell the bike so if you cut a deal and keep it WITH THE TITLE you and they can do well.

Do your homework where every you live.

The only intimidating thing about carbs is knowing your bike will run like shit relative to even 90s FI (the no O2 sensors, no carbs kind) all the time because you have primitive mass market carbs instead of a performance set that costs more than your used motorcycle

>how to actually clean carbs, if you let your bike sit with shit gas:
>check the fuel filter for gunk
>put fresh gas in the tank
>still habve a problem?
>pop the top off
>open the drain screw
>blast that little hole with carb cleaner for half an hour
Unless your bike sat for 20 years it works every time. Carbs are generally maintenance free if you baby them.

A clogged injector, failing fuel pump, or clogged filter on a FI bike is actually more wrenching-intensive if it happens.

But adv bikes make some pretty dank street bikes for hooning in comfort with a little bit of occasional dirt riding on the side. You don't have to do extreme trails to make use of the bike. It's no worse than the 99% of supersports that never lean more than 3 degrees.

I never said any of that.

I'm talking about people who literally don't ride their bike to its capabilities EVER.

Not the guy that does a couple grand adventure runs a year and uses his bike as a commuter the rest of the year. Not the guy that goes to track day once a month or every two months, knows how to ride his bike, and still rides it to work sometimes.

Those people have bikes with actual miles on them and the signs of being used for what they were designed to do.

I'm talking about the guys with little to no riding experience who go out and buy the "fastest" or "best" bike based on reviews and specs, talk about how capable it is constantly, and put a couple thousand miles on it before selling it, or a few hundred miles a year, or never run a hard hundred miles on their adv, or never take their liter bike to the track. It's THOSE guys.

They're just doing it as a status symbol, like a flair badge on their backpack or something. "This is part of how I define my personality!" just because I own it. It's like stancefags or retards with $3000 safe queen guns with round counts in the hundreds at best.
