Is it a bad idea to buy a used bike off gumtree?

I was thinking I could test ride the bike I want at a dealer, and if I like it buy it 2nd hand off someone else privately.

Is this alright to do?

I've heard so many horror stories about buying privately.

Scramblers are actually okay, given the "offroading" that's involved in typical "adventure" riding. Oh yeah, you totally need an MX racer's suspension travel for those harrowing jeep trails and all that muddy technical single track you won't go on because your fat ass bike would fucking sink into the earth.

But only if it's a proper modern scrambler that's actually a custom standard or sportbike, not overpriced factory bullshit.

Find some places that don't have much traffic and ride there a lot until you have a good idea of whether the cops will be around and where you would get caught. Is there really nowhere nearby that you can ride around for at least 30 minutes without seeing any cops let alone only a few cars?
You can always set the gearing up for a lower top speed and really make the use of the power it has, it might be too much wheelspin and wheelie for you but if you have some self control and just don't speed it would be ridiculous around tight roads and traffic lights but you'll be revving it a lot more and it'll be strained to commute and use a lot more fuel.

So I ended up riding about 40km today, much further than I was expecting, and it was so much fun. So i'm thinking, what is the next step for me? And i had a little look at what it would take to ride across the country...

This would take me to the other side of Korea...

Maybe not next weekend, but the weekend after, I could ride this trip, spend a night in a cheap hotel, then ride back the next day!

I'll have to get my hands on some kind of luggage i could attach to the back of my little bike, but this is not really that far...

Bikes are banned from express ways, so i'll be limited to twisties... hmmmm

lash a duffle bag to the pillon spot, use an X pattern on the straps and hook the front at the pillon pegs and the back on the grab loop if nothing else is back there.
ideally have a tent or some other structure giving item in the bag to help it stay put better too
otherwise you can invest in some saddle bags and a rack to support them but thats a much more costly option than just lashing a bag on the seat

There is a bit of a bike scene, but bikes are seen as "poor" by a lot of people due to the delivery bikes all over the place.

The Bike scene is mainly about image, people buy bikes to look good next to them. But Bikers are pretty friendly here at least.

Bikes of all sizes are not allowed on express ways, and speeds on the roads bikes are allowed on go up to 60kph in cities and 80kph in the rural areas . but you can go 10kph faster legally...

Also, after i purchased that bike it went up in value, Koreans never maintain anything, so a foreigner owned bike is actually worth more...

I have one too, but it's kind of a beginner bike in terms of power. It's nice, it's comfy, it's decently quick to and at speeds you'd sanely go on any public road, it handles "okay" and suspension upgrades are documented on varying forums, but man, it's not a track weapon. You can get going fast, fast without knowing how to launch and basically forget shifting past second but it's really not that fast.

And with an 800cc's MPG that kind of sucks.

Is there much traffic on the rural roads? Some look pretty great and you could really learn so many different corners, great scenery too. One day I want to go ride around another country, I drove across New Zealand a while ago now I'm thinking Japan or SK. I'm pretty far off affording it right now though.

you've got a low exhaust there so throw-over panniers should be good. You can then strap down/bungee a large backpack across the backseat and across the panniers. Should be nice and secure if you strap it all down tightly.

You can carry as much as you would in a car on a motorcycle if you're determined enough.

>Holy shit korea is a shithole, legislation-wise.
Let me tell you a story

There was a business in korea, and they found that people would write their names on the sign in sheet,in the office, and then leave early just writing down the time they are meant to go

so they added a system where you needed to log on and of with the computers as well as writing down your name

but then people worked out how to sign into the system using their phones and remote connections

so they added a fingerprint scanner as well

So now, employees get to work, scan their finger print, then sign their name and employee code, and then sign in on the computers.

That is how korea works

Beginner bike in terms of power?

>I have one too, but it's kind of a beginner bike in terms of power. It's nice, it's comfy, it's decently quick to and at speeds you'd sanely go on any public road, it handles "okay" and suspension upgrades are documented on varying forums, but man, it's not a track weapon. You can get going fast, fast without knowing how to launch and basically forget shifting past second but it's really not that fast.

A newer viffer makes like approx 8 less whp than a newer CBR600RR but makes approx 8 more torque. And it makes those peak torque and horsepower levels lower down in the rev range. (which is preferred for a street bike)

So while the 600RR is hunting for peak torque at around 11500rpms or so the viffer peaks at 8500rpms or so. Same if you look at peak horsepower, the viffer is peaking around 10500 while the rr is 13500. (depending on what specific years you compare) so it is hitting peak numbers 3000rpms sooner in the rev range respectively. As for it not being that fast it is only approx. .3-.5thenths slower in the quarter when compared to the rr. Also the viffer and the rr both run the same size 180/55/17 rears and the same 120/70/17 fronts. of course the viffer weighs more and has a longer wheelbase but that is to be expected.

Stock for stock the rr tops out at about 158 while the viffer is about 146mph.

As for it being a track weapon, I never said it was. It is a street bike...and a good one at that.

I really have a hard time considering it a beginner bike...and the v-4 in the vif sounds titties.

Can I see a pic of yours? What year?

How much is the scooter worth (keeping in mind I'll need to replace the odometer)?
Full ad text:

I have for Sale or trade a 2009 Kymco Xciting Ri 500cc scooter that is in great condition and needs nothing. New Pirelli tires and new battery last year. Odometer is not showing up on digital display but less than 10,000 miles. Fuel Injected for easy starting and riding. Great on gas and fully automatic. Has trunk on rear and tall touring windshield for great wind and weather protection. Clean and clear TN title in my name. Text or email is best ways to reach me

Your pussy obviously.

IMHO thats way too much. If there is anything good about scooters then it is simplicity and economy. This has none. You'll have to fix it, do full motorcycle paperwork and it'll glob fuel.

Get some sub 1k 125cc Honda. In here sub 50cc don't require biennial technical checkups and road tax, so that would be even more favorable.

it's not hard to learn, i managed it really fast with no manual experience. but ok

It's worth about $3k-4k for a really good condition one with 10-15 thousand km

Kymco engine reliability is great, and mechanically they are very reliable are rarely have any serious problems. I have ridden one once before. it's similar to sitting on a couch that happens to be going absurdly fast.

You may want to get it repainted or plastidipped though, Kymco paint used to be rubbish and has only improved recently. it's only plastic so it won't rust.

If you do buy it, let us know how it goes, scooter riders are always fun guys and really chill, just ignore the no-scoots

Well look on the bright side, his insurance rates have GOT to have just skyrocketed. Motorcycle insurance or no, when the adjusters see how he was 100% in the wrong for the wreck they might make it too expensive for him to ride.

There's really nothing to learn. You pull it in when you're stopped, you release it when you want to go. The first time I threw a leg over a motorcycle, I was able to take off without stalling. It's nothing to brag about either, it's just really super simple.

guys how do I lean when I live in a country with speed limits, leaning for the sake of leaning seems almost stupider than having chicken strips.

I just bought my first bike, a 1981 kz750 for $350, in decent shape.
Question1- is that a decent price?
Question2-Can I wheelie this 400+lbs machine?
>>
>>16984687
Sadly no, apparently just minor injuries somehow. He's going to WISH he was dead after his insurance company is through with him.

It is

This is probably a dumb question but I've never bought from a stealership before this bike.
If there's a recall on an unsold bike, will the dealership perform the recall correction before selling it? Recall 07/2016, bought bike 10/2016 new. I assumed it would be done but not certain. Anyone know?

i 'm putting my GS up for sale but i'm pretty sure i'm gonna be sitting on it for a while since it doesn't appear so appealing to noobs out there

but should i get the carbs serviced before i sell it or let them worry about it? i've replaced the tires, brakes, spark plugs, and battery. other than that it's riding strong. i've got 10,600 on it so far.

they look OK. DRZ400SMs are meme taxed all to hell, as you've no doubt noticed. Unless you really want that exact bike, I'd suggest going for the 650 or another one like it. maybe also consider this WR426: https://orangecounty.craigslist.org/mcy/6048049468.html

Who here top mechanic? I got a bike with 2 brake discs on the front wheel. The problem is the wheel is slightly bound. When i put the bike on centre stand and the wheel in the air it doesn't spin freely, i can turn it by hand but it resists. I can roll the bike around in neutral, but there is resista ce. After riding i touched the discs and one was cold, the other slightly warm, so i assume it's one of the calipers doing this and not the wheel bearing. Any possible diagnoses and or remedies?
>>
cager sprayed me with wiper fluid today,
I don't carry broken sparkplugs v0v
>>
>>16985221
-Check wheel bearing, this can also cause brake drag
-Check if the brake disc is straight
-But by far the largest possibility: right brake caliper has slightly seized and the pad isn't returning to its correct position. So clean pistons and maybe replace seals.
>>
>>16985240

slightly warm isnt enough for a stuck brake caliper, it would be hot if its constantly pushing against the disk.

my money is on a wheel bearing. How does it sound when spinning on the stand?

I don't really remember hearing any sound desu. Can't check anymore because I'm away for a week :/. But there was definitely a difference in temperature between the two discs, so it must have had more contact with something, and if not caliper, than what? Although I agree it doesn't make a bearing problem impossible.
