What kind of coaching is best for a new rider who wants to go fast and not die and who has already been through MSF?
>a. road course. e.g. novice school at Z2 or sportbiketracktime
>(excluding things like CSS and YCRS because $$$)
>b. small bikes sliding on dirt. American Supercamp/Cornerspin
>c. street-oriented training. police motorcycle courses, total control, etc.
>d. other, please specify
>>
>>16899860
What are those
>>
>>16899917
I would start with MSF advanced rider course, then maybe move up to a cheaper school or track day. Also check your local tracks, some have independent schools and classes that aren't as expensive as shit like CSS.

What bike do you ride?
my fireblade was my first big bike after two years of 125cc. Rode it two years and took a trackday with instructor at years two.
It was half a day of training like proper brake technique and riding on a go cart like track and the other half on a real track.
learned a bit. About as much as one can learn in a day. thats not much, but gives an idea where to improve
after that I did three more track days two of them where multiple days, always with an instructor. money well spent

who knows man maybe I just suck at riding and some other are getting faster better than me.
probably but I can only advice you to go to a track with an instructor, as it is a hell of a lot of fun.

For a start i took a instructor with a small group of 5 that was cheaper
And on that first trackday there was also about an hour or two of theory that was really interesting. Would take that again for a start

The SV id definitely suitable for the track should have enough power to keep up decent enough and if you are good on the brakes, you can get almost everybody before the turn.

My fireblade claims to have 150 hp at the crank and probably about 130hp at the rear wheel if it really ever had that much hp. Getting the 600cc bikes i no problem, but a modern 1000cc bike is way faster. BUT pretty much everybody with a liter bike brakes way to soon you can always get them there. A lot of fun to overtake a bike with a lot more hp
disclaimer: I get overtaken a lot by many guys who are faster and on the only race I ever did I qualified only for the race because they counted my bike in the 750cc category (>600cc and <1000cc class) because there where more starting places than bikes lol

But desu. do a trackday it is so much fun

the 701 comes with optional rear footpegs and its legal to have a pillion on it.

at the Hockenheimring all four times. once with Speer and three times with Hafenegger.
Both are equally good. Hafenegger just had the better dates for me.

Oh btw always refuel your bike before the warning ligth comes on. at best have a canister and refuel after every one of the 20 minutes turns. Had done about 100km of track without refueling. warning ligth hadn't been on but at full throttle on the home stretch the bike suddenly lost all power for a second, regained all power, lost it again and so on.
thought I broke the old lady but turned out that under full throttle the SC50 needs a bit more gas in the tank to nut pump air.
Had to ride of the track and lost the rest of that turn.

Update on my lights issue. Lights didn't work at all on a long ride today. Stopped for fuel, bike didn't start. Push-started it, rode home, bike died in traffic. Push-started again, got further, traffic, died again. Managed to restart it using a hill, but it died once I eased off the throttle to stop. Had to push it half a mile uphill to get home.
The alternator is fucked, far as I can guess. Probably the battery too because it's flat as fuck.

So I'm one of those suckers who thinks luminescent rim-tape would look neat. Problem is with a single-sided swingarm there's no good place to mount the right hand side UV emitter for the rear wheel right close to the rim. Could either stick a massive UV blaster under the passenger pegs and hope it covers the whole arm motion with sufficient intensity, or rig up some shitty arm that wraps around the wheel from the other side of the swingarm pivot and hope it doesn't flex enough for the tyre to eat it.
Anyone know any designs that would work well with an SSSl? I intend to wire up & pot the emitters myself anyway, but I'd rather avoid re-inventing the wheel if someone else has already solved the problem.

80's honda cb's had some weird stuff like plastic swingarm bushings, generators with carbon brushes, non-rebuildable fuel valves, etc. Still nifty bikes, but you have to be resourceful.

Bretty cool, I came close to buying one for my first bike. It'll be dead simple to work on but the power won't blow you away. Like others will say, 55mph is the most you'll want to cruise at.
There's an entire forum dedicated to it (tw200forum.com). There's a douchey vlogger on YT named motomax that rides one, kinda gives you an idea how it'll do on the street. He wheelies it pretty easily.

got a question guys, would full synthetic oil be good for a honda shadow 750 ace?
>>
>>16900743
The problem with a 250 is that if you try to do anything approaching highway speeds the engine will be going full tilt and the light weight will have you rattling over every bump. Load up enough gear for the trip and it will really start to chug.

Out of interest, are you more interested in a dual sport for the looks and ergos or for actual off roadability?

I am new to bikes, Is it dumb to talk about "standard" bikes? A guy was asking what kind of bike I was looking for, and I told him I wanted something standard, not to laid back or aggressive. The guy looked at me funny, so I walked off.

Probably DR650. They'll last you a loooooong time too.

I actually like the looks of naked bikes the best. I live in an area that has almost no good paved driving roads, but an incredible amount of back country dirt roads (north western Ontario). I like dual sport because of the cost, the roads available near where I live, and they do look pretty cool. I also like the idea of it as a first bike because there is more you can do on them. Street riding, off road in the bush / hydro lines, and cross country stuff with saddle bags.

Plenty of cafe racer projects here in Iowa; plenty of hipsters. I personally think a DR650 or KLR650 are the best starter bikes. Enough power to go, hard to break them, heavy enough for you to work a little but light enough that it's not a pain, cheap, and goddamn fun.
>>
>>16900760
Not at all. Maybe he's not very open minded. Standard refers to 'standard riding position' like sport/naked bikes, UJM's, and dual sports.
>>
>>16900764
I'll keep that in mind. I was under the impression that a naked bike was more of a styling thing than a riding position.
>>
>>16900763
This may sound a bit like a joke but, provided you're not a manlet and if you have the money an Africa Twin might be ideal. It's a litre but it's an incredibly laid back I2 with such linear power delivery that I would go so far as to say that a new rider with a sensible head could quite happily handle one.

Alternatively, a Transalp might be worth looking into, the only major downside with them is the lack of a 6th gear.

>>16900763
depending on prices and income another good option might be a 200 or 250 dirt-oriented dual sport for short trips near your house and dirt riding and something like a Vstrom or even a naked SV with ADV tires for longer trips.
>>
>>16900784
Massively depends on the 650. My first big boy bike was an NC750 and I've ridden <500cc bikes that are more eager to fuck you up. Granted, that engine was practically a diesel that inexplicably ran on petrol.
>>
>>16900784
Insurance rates vary. And displacement isn't everything; my friends KLR is 650 and its far slower than a CBR 600.

I like this idea. My initial thought of a TW200 might be best when considering pricing, insurance, skill level to ride, and it being a first bike. I very well could go through the whole process and end up not liking motorcycling. I don't want to spend too much on a bike, and if I fall in love with it in the future I could buy a bigger bike for the cross country trips that I would like to do.
>>
>>16900784
It's a single cylinder so it'll be more like a tractor than a speed demon. When people say '650 is too much' they're talking about sportbikes. Even for a cruiser, 650 isn't a crazy amount of power because they're heavy.
Try getting a few quotes on DR650's, there are a lot of model years.
Otherwise, DRZ400/WR250R are good but their popularity brings the price up.
>>
>>16900784
You can start no problem on a mt07/cb650f/sv650/er6n or any other naked 650ish. Just make sure to take hours of baby steps bullshit in a parking lot until you are 100% confident in clutch, brake and throttle usage.

After that just go very fucking slow for the first couple of months.

Then you can sanic.

This. Tractor a good.
>>
>>16900784
650 is not very descriptive.

>>
>>16900806
You should keep in mind that dual-sports can cost more to insure, because they take into account the possibility you will drive it off road. There can even be a cutoff where they will refuse to insure your bike, or require you to get a different type of insurance, if you say you will drive off road too much.

Just got a new bike, thought to test it out while its the weekend and the weather is nice for onCe, only to be blocked by endless amount of cars all coming to a halt due to a CUNT pedalling at 3 mph up a slight incline.

Why can't they stick to the side of the road? Why can't they fucking close their legs instead of spreading their legs like they are trying to fit their bicycle up their arse?

If you want to keep your ears safe and get the best quality sound possible then use Shure SE215's with triple flange tips, they go half way to your brain, block external sounds as effectively as earplugs and give pretty damn good sound quality.

>>
>>16901036
Cos 80% of the road up the mountain are bends, and any time you overtake there are more cars trotting behind another giant CUNT.

No way I'm overtaking on blind bends on narrow roads while all the cars I'm overtaking are bumper to bumper.

I once had a cyclist run a red light straight into my panniers, the collision ripped the forks off his gay lump of carbon fibre. The damage to my panniers consisted of a black mark that came out with a damp cloth (Givi stronk).

>>16901239
I have been mostly on 600's and a few times on 1000's, never on a ducati so I can't tell you straight from my experience. From what I understand given input from mechanics, dealers and a large group of bikers is that... well, it's mainly up to you, your riding style, affordability, bike confidence, and your height (to a degree). The friend who bought a Ducati hated it because it relied too much on electronics in every aspect, that it limits you in bends so you can't slide the back tyre by twisting the throttle too much, and a whole other "assists" regarding riding. As well as any failures which all bikes are prone to are going to be more expensive to fix. Recently two of my friends hopped on newer blades and are astonished at it's lightness, balance and control, others praise the gsxr for its stability etc. The BMW comes out on top every time from my research and the opinions around me, I don't know how reliable it is tho.

tl;dr, put some proper research into it. Don't fall for the meme of owning one, see what suits you.

To answer your question that depends on what you want a dual sport for, taking long adventure rides across country and motocamping in the woods and shit? Not really, short oil change intervals, probably too weak a subframe to hold luggage, and it'll be buzzy. But if you want a plated dirtbike you can ride to the trails and do some dank enduro riding? Yea, it'll be great.

They just are really really good tires and hold long while providing a lot of grip and as long as you dont do trackdays they probably wont overheat.

Haven't looked it up but I'm pretty sure they are better in every aspect than the sport tires Metzler M1 that came out when my Fireblade was new.

The only reason not to is that they look a bit hideous on a sports bike with that pattern.

That's not a pilot road. It almost doesn't even have a pattern.

What bike would each of you recommend if I want to get lost on a Sunday and end up at some random bar for lunch and find a way back home by sundown?
>>
>>16901524
You can do that on any bike, but it's best on one you enjoy riding.
>>
>>16901524
CRF1000L because you'd be able to cross anything to get home.

I'd suggest the FZ6 too. Had a naked version and the half faired.

The bikee is extremely reliable, tough as nails, easy to ride, comfortable ride, easy to lean, little servicing required.

Only downside is that shorter riders might have issues. I'm 6ft 2 and just manage to place my foot down flat.

I dont have them on the fireblade right now, but I could see myself mounting them there too for street riding.
on the meme bike they held about 12000km.
If they'd do 2/3rds of that on the Blade I'd be more than happy
>>
>>16901562
My hardest part is finding a road that is curvy enough, yet empty enough so I can really go fast and get that hektik lean in. This bike is too damn quick for normal roads compared to my old CX. The limits are much higher.

I have no fucking clue, man. I had a gsf 650 recently and had a shot at a friend's fz6, and there was a considerable difference. I don't know what's the standard height of them, my ones might have been raised, or yours low, or i'm bullshitting with wonky memory.

I did quite a lot of dirt road stuff in italy and boy that was some nasty stuff.
I dont like power washers on bikes. Only a lot of motorcycle cleaner and a garden hose for me. Had to wash her three times to get everything off.
Take some soft brushes for kitches appliances and a lot of water and cleaner and go for it.
Does take quite a lot of work but as it wasn't my bike but my moms that i borrowed for the trip and she likes her bike spottles, well It took a long time to get the bike perfect again

Not too bad. One thing I suggest is to wait a little longer to turn in and turn in all at once. Like the way you stand up all at once on the exit, do that on the entrance too
Instead of

>lean a little more
>lean a little more

if you dont have money for the new 2017 model you should, 5k is not bad for a 2015 mt09.
The new model comes with quickshifter (for upshifting) and better suspension, so in short the best fz/mt 09 ever produced. Also i dont like the orange.
