Quick post GOAT death metal albums!
>Excluding some jazz fusion staff
That's kinda what I meant.
But, Kobong and Chimp Spanner are great. Modern bands like Wide Eyes (a bit cheesy), Peculate (really weird), and Mestis are great. Honestly if you eliminate jazz influences you eliminate a lot of what makes djent great. Then again I think Animals as Leaders debut is one of the best metal albums ever, so what do I know.
NEW DREAM THEATER SONG GET HYPE

Jungle Rot-Order Shall prevail 7/10
Midnight Television-Self Title 7/10, maybe 8 if i'm feeling like it
Insect Warfare-World Extermination 8/10
So have any of their infamous stories been posted online? Every time they come up on a forum someone chimes in about how crazy they were but how they can't repeat the epic insanity/must keep it a secret.
I only know the one where Black Winds punched through a car window to catch a guy running from him
Blacklodge - Solarkult (7.5/10, kinda tiring but gnarly as hell riffs)
Cult of Luna - Vertikal (8.5/10, underrated CoL release)
Dolorian - Voidwards (9/10 holy fuk)
Indian - From All Purity (8/10, had to grow on me for a bit though)
Ad Nauseam - Nihil Quam Vacuitas Ordinatum Est (6.5/10, not bad but I don't understand the crazy hype)
>I don't understand the hype
It's the 11/10 riffing, surrealist classical musical segments and really memorable good songwriting, also that outro is one of the best moments of last year
>David Bowie - Scary Monsters: 7/10
has some of his greatest songs, but some boring ass ones near the end
>Beach Slang - The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us: 7/10
Overall pretty good, but it becomes samey near the end. One tone, but it's a good tone.
>Anderson .Paak - Malibu: 6/10
TOO LONG with too many boring tracks. Some amazing tracks with good features
>Showbread - Showbread is Showdead: 4/10
just, stupid cheesy synth hardcore? idk, strangely generic for something so unique
>As Cities Burn - Son, I Loved You at Your Darkest: 6/10
Circa Survive 2.0, cool guitar, amazing bookends. Monotonous as hell
lmfao i haven't listened to any metal in the past 5 albums yet i'm still posting this here
What's /metal/ listening to on this fine day?
the symphonic stuff on Shade Empire's "Omega Arcane" reminds me of that a lot, although the album is not very similar overall
I'm honestly cautiously hyped for the new DT album. I know I'm very much the minority on here, but I've always been a fan of their old stuff and the two songs they've released for it reminded me a lot of Images and Words
So, what's the opinion on wintersun here? personally I find the fusion of genres to be pretty damn neat.
>David Bowie- Blackstar, 8/10
thought wit was 7/10 before he died, bumped up because holy fuck what a legend
>Rage Against the Machine- s/t, 7/10
Really funky and groovy and fun to put on when doing boring shit
>Killing Joke- s/t, 7/10
Really nice but idk how this holds up compared to other industrial rock cause I know fuck all about industrial
>Bathory- s/t. 7/10
This was my first black metal and when I heard the first time I thought it sucked, listened to it again after years and it's okay
>Bathory- Blood on Ice, 7/10
Also okay, not much to say about it
Haven't really listened to anything since yesterday except Encenathrakh which I loved so going to repost this
Then he should make power metal. Death metal and power metal never mix well, it doesn't matter if he can write decent power metal if the genre he's trying to mix it well isn't suited for it. Steak is good and cake is good, however baking steak into a cake will never taste good.
>Implying you listen only to innovative bands
I don't but they don't try pretending like they are
Both are shit but Alexi can write riffs that are more fun, I'll take CoB over Wintersun
>Dude do you rate everything with 7/10?
pretty much, it was all pretty un-outstanding but still enjoyable enough
also the second Killing Joke, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiUjgHoeZk8
pretty good I thiink
It's not suited for death metal, he'd be better in a more melodic metal genre. Link related is the perfect example of how to execute melodic death metal
While prog is a very self-serving genre and being self-serving isn't inherently bad, Dream Theater represent the worst of a genre already filled with self-indulgent expressionism. Dream Theater are not as fun as Gentle Giant or Genesis, are not as good songwriters as Pink Floyd or Porcupine Tree, nor as adventurous as Can or King Crimson. The only thing this prog band really has going for them is their technical exhibitionism and histrionics. However, much like Rush, this is merely a front to hide just how ordinary and uninspired their music is much. While the members of Dream Theater are more than capable of playing, the ability to play something worthwhile is a trait that is lost on the group. And it is this that makes Dream Theater experienced, yet so amateur
>this is btw a terrible reason to bump a review up a point
In most cases I'd agree but Bowie made the album with the sole purpose of it relating to his death. Listening to and deconstructing the album before and after his death are two completely different experiences and the fact that the album was made because of his imminent death shows a brilliance most artists don't have
Anyways why are we discussing Bowie in a metal thread
Blind Guardian ballads get a pass.
and of course:
tbqh this album is everything I dislike in funeral doom.
Overdramatic melodies with heavy emphasis on flute-sounding keyboard.
Some guy said it was the only good album of this whole chart.
I've listened to half of these now and I feel like it's one of the weakest.
I find it very sad and lonely. I mean he's dying and despite being successful and having friends/family, he'll have to face it alone. At least that's what I get from the video and the lyrics.
Currently listening to Neil Young - Harvest
Shostakovich - Symphony n°5 ( conducted by Vasily Petrenko )
Patterns - Dangerous Intentions
7/10 probably ( was new )
Rainbow - Rising
9/10 ( even if i always feel uncomfortable when rating classical music next to "popular" music which is probably why i rarely rate it )
Talk Talk - Spirit of eden
>Alright this isn't too bad I guess
>LaBrie starts singing
In 2004? Fuck, how about Temple of Shadows, Defying the Rules, Reckoning Night, Machines of Mental Design, 8 Deadly Sins...
ea have good atmosphere but baaaaaad pacing
Good? I mean, i wouldn't say that. Inoffensive yeah. More bland than anything else. If i wanted to listen to more cheesy gothic funeral doom I'd listen to Colosseum. At least their shit is interesting.
>tfw people just don't have the time for music anymore
+ everything except snare drum the album
Hey does anyone know where can i download music from bands like Poison (The germans that made some thrash back in the 80's, not the other faggots), Slaughter Lord, Onslaught, Slaughet from Canada, Obscurity from Sweden, Mefisto (also from Sweden)... any of those or all of them, and in general where can i get some good underground 80's thrash/death metal. In the shithole i live there's not a fucking place where i can get any of those, and i can't buy from amazon or stuff like that since they don't ship to where i'm from. Als been searching for a couple of hours for torrents or links on any blog or web but can't seem to find anything.
Is there anything like Akercocke but with better vocals and more focused?
this is the best thing I've found (a sideproject of theirs)
I'm looking for death metal with a good use of dissonance, dynamics, and atmosphere
it can be blackened or thrashy or whatever just good spacey transitions
Can anyone recommend me some good black metal bands? My brother recently started getting into bands like Summoning but I just get bored listening to them. Is all black metal like that or is that a specific niche?
>You will never relive 9th grade thinking you were hot shit for listening to bands like ABRB, Veil of Maya, After the Burial, and Last Ten Seconds of Life
I have pretty varied tastes but a few of the bands I like are
Not a huge fan of thrash though. Maybe black metal just isn't for me?
Just give it a try to the basics of black metal: stuff like Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, Enslaved, Immortal... bands like that, if you like them, then start listening some other bands. The sad thing about black metal is that 90% of the bands are clones of the Norwegian bands from the early 90's (especially Darkthrone, Mayhem and Burzum).
If you're looking for pre-Black stuff you can listen to Celtic Frost & Hellhammer, Venom off course, Sarcófago, Bathory, early Sodom.. stuff like that
According to my sputnikprofile:
Crystal Age - Far Beyond Divine Horizons: 8.5/10
Crematory - Transmigration: 8/10
Convulse - World Without God: 8/10
Carcass - Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious: 8.5/10
Trudger - Dormiveglia: 8.22/10
goin through a OSDM phase
++Absu, Bathory, Immortal
+Deicide, Inquisition, Mayhem
listen to this shizzy mah nizzy
I'm openly right wing about a lot of shit. I balance it out though because I'm a libertarian on most issues.
>Hates muslims, jews and refugees
>Doesn't care if gays marry or if you smoke weed
Feels good mang.
American born right here faggots. I don't have a problem with people saying they don't like refugees since they legitimately do cause problems, but saying you don't like a group of 1.6 billion people is pretty autistic.
Is there a modern band that plays music like Tool - The Pot? It's just about my favorite metal song of all time and I'm wondering if there's a band that plays similar music.
Their worst so far but I love it.
for practical purposes if you're in the anglosphere when you say 'muslim' you're talking about the middle east and large portions of africa. There are no Indonesian child grooming gangs in the north of England, although Indonesia is one of the largest muslim enclaves on earth. It's basic pattern recognition. We could stumble around trying to be absolutely fair or accept reality even if it's at the cost of being totally accurate all the time.
>Has a shit taste in deathcore
So this is what people resort to when they don't have anything to say.
Fair enough. I was just trying to figure out if you legitimately hated all muslims or just the ones that are portrayed in the media today.
It sure as shit isn't music you idiot
death metal gets unfairly seen as 'dumb' imo. It doesn't have the same level of artfag built in as bm but the music speaks for itself. A basic death metal band puts more thought into its composition than the basic run of the mill shit from any other genre that doesn't exist to be 'smart' in the first place
This album changed my mind on Power Metal. Is the rest of their stuff this good? Any other recs?
Whatsup /metal/, I don't usually get into music too deep, but lately I've been bored and not wanting to listen to the same tracks over and over again. I'm looking for some recommendations, I like a lot Electric Wizards songs and I also really like At The Gates and their song The Book of Sand https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6cMVf1cXPU . What are some other bands/albums to listen to if I'm looking for shit similar to The Book of Sand? Pic unrelated, my friend showed it to me.
yes, Blind Guardian has no bad albums. Their worst album is merely okay.
If you like them check out early Stratovarius, Twilight Force, Rhapsody of Fire, and Rise of the Northstar
Can we discuss how based first-wave BM is
Post your favorites
I like the song, but I can't feel I'd like it better without the (whatever the word is for those type of vocals). That being said, I still like the song a lot thanks for the recommendation anon
ELIZABETH BATHORY THE COUNTESS OF MY FIREEEEEEEEEE
oh shit what the fuck, i mustve opened up the wrong link anon. it linked me to this weird low vocal album. couldve sworn i opened the right one. maybe i clicked a recommended video or something, i actually kinda like that song
>tfw so used to 4chan that I assume anyone speaking to me without 100 layers of obvious irony is actually using 800 layers of irony to make fun of me
it gets fucking nerve-wracking after the first 10 years or so
AMONGST THE SLAVES
They're my favorite death metal band alongside Incantation. From Dawn of Possession up until Unholy Cult they were one of the most consistent death metal bands, sadly after that they really started stagnating.
It's a real shame. I personally love Harnessing though, I'd include it with their good stuff. I don't know what happened after that because they clearly loved what they were doing and had nothing to gain by 'selling out'. Maybe they'll get back on form one day.
I had problems getting into into Immolation for their strongly anti-religious lyrics, I even tollerate goregrind more than Satanistic/anti-religious lyrics
Katatonia - Brave Murder Day
Are you serious
If it bothers you then whatever, I'm not about to tell you what's what. They're a lot more thoughtful than the usual 'assrape jesus and sew his cock to a goat's liver' stuff as it goes, they're practically scholarly by meal standards
>inb4 someone comes in with some hipster occult band
The main distinction between Blind Guardian albums is that their earlier albums are much more speed metal based, whereas their newer stuff incorporates more symphonic/progressive elements (though it does still heavily focus on the Power Metal aspects, speed included). I personally favour the middle of their discography, though, which encompasses Nightfall. If you're planning on listening to more of them, I'd suggest going with Imaginations from the other side first.
for recommendations (ones that have yet to be mentioned)- Judicator, Persuader, Hibria, Gloryhammer, and timeless miracle.
As a warning, you'll have to be able to live with the cheesiness that this genre will bring upon you.
all i've heard from them is Conversations which was more post-metal/metalcore like early The Ocean or Knut. so yeah i was a bit confused. I know what OG deathcore sounds like.
very single-minded, good at what they do, rarely in the mood for them but Here in After is one of the better DM records of its time period
but that's the really unsettling stuff
antichrist deathcore elitists arise pls
I thought funeral doom was a big meme until I gave this a listen. I have no idea how .5 bpm kept me engaged but I liked it.
obvious troll, try harder pal
Dragonland - Starfall 8/10
Negura Bunget - Virstele Pamintului 9/10
Misery Index - The Killing Gods 7/10
Malign - Diving Facing/Fireborn 10/10
Heaven in Her Arms - Erosion of the Black Speckle 9/10
You wot? Also Omnipotence is easily their best
would it be fair to say that most people who don't at least like Cannibal Corpse are newbs who got into death metal after 2010 and had their tastes spelled out for them by bloggers? Does anyone old not at least appreciate them, if not particularly love them?
I'd say the opposite, most of the people who think they're the best at anything in the genre haven't explored it enough. Now maybe if you're one of those faggots who can only listen to super fast tech death or can only handle death metal when it's extremely melodic would you be making a point, but for the most part Cannibal Corpse are very very average.
>I've always thought they were a meme band.
yeah that's kind of what I mean. I haven't seen one good reason why they aren't great beyond 'LOL LE MAYMAY BAND FROM 90s I MEAN CURRENT YEAR LOL'
yeah I'm not arguing they're some unsung masters, they're literally the AC/DC of dm and that's fine. I just see a lot of people trashing them as a bad band who don't know what the fuck they're talking about
Their stuff with Barnes was decent but everything they've done with Corpsegrinder has been underwhelming to terrible. I'm not blaming this solely on him, but in general they became shit without Barnes.
But Barnes' post Cannibal Corpse stuff JUST
Today I loaded up an external drive with all my music because I learned a non-phone or iPod works with my Ford's Sync and by the time I got to work my hearing was fuzzy from blasting Rise of the Northstar
i have been nodding thoughtfully along to half heard conversations and i really hope they were not important
it helps to repeat at least one word that was probably vital to their point back to them but you need to hear that one word
also full house, sevens full of fours
