I'm speaking as someone who really knows nothing about metal except the /mu/core essentials like Burzum and Sleep, but holy fuck pic related is awful. One of the worst big name albums of the year, hands down. The guitar work is laughable and I can't take any of it seriously when at any point the band's ready to shift into lazy third wave post-rock gear or to attempt to sound like an Eagles cover band. It's like they're trying to pull a Mr Bungle with all these genre influences but it doesn't come across as creative or self-aware on any level, and they're left with cookie cutter babby's first post-rock for /r/indieheads to enjoy.

I was just curious what actual metal fans thought of it, what did you guys think?

no brutal/tech band has remotely similar songwriting. wormed's style uses basically constant time-signature changes and hardly ever relies on the sweeping riffs of Origin-style TBDM, or the palm-muting patterns of Defeated Sanity/Disgorge and their followers. desu, Cloudkicker's first album made me appreciate meshuggah a lot more. It wasn't that great of an album, but it got me thinking that maybe chugging isn't automatically a bad thing. Catch Thirty Three is a masterpeice when you go in with that mentality.
