Why not? A communist society allows for competition just fine, it just doesn't excessively reward the victors while possibly impoverishing the losers.
Even in imperfect attempts at communism, we see this. The Kalashnikov was a result of one such contest.
Just because people to receive in accordance to their needs does not exclude the merit of competition and self interest. Humans are driven by the need to improve and to see what works best. I think it was Ha-Joon Chang that made a reference to chefs making food for all of the chefs in their own interedt, rather than mostly for the chef on top, receiving what the chef on top deems them worthy of receiving.
Ironically, this means that communism better fulfills the human need to seek self interest.

This doesn't actually answer my question. You're claiming that people cannot work for their own self interest. This is untrue because communism supports self interest just fine, but has people culturally invested in working according to the best of their ability, and receiving according to their needs.
The only thing communism removes is the dependance of the working class upon a group of middlemen who siphon away the majority of what they make for his own interests.
In other words, communism better meets the self interest of all people, rather than catering to a few and limiting how far the rest may go via Hobson's choices
