The wikipedia page on her has some hilarious bits:
> I was surprised at her beauty and intelligence, and believe it or not, her esprit de corps. Like any other Marine, she was enjoying a bottle of beer with her comrades. She was constantly the center of attraction and was fully aware of her importance. If she failed to receive the attention she felt her due, she would deliberately walk into a group of Marines and, in effect, enter the conversation. It was obvious the Marines loved her.

>Reckless's entry into the United States was not without its challenges. The Customs Bureau was not much of a problem but the United States Department of Agriculture insisted a medical check and lab tests be completed before she disembarked from the ship once it reached San Francisco, which would make her late for the Marine banquet where she was to be the guest of honor. The Marines contacted Agriculture Department officials in Washington, D.C. who agreed to allow her off the ship after her blood was drawn for lab tests, with the understanding that if she had glanders or dourine, she would be destroyed or sent back to Japan. Many of the Marines who actually knew her were incensed at what they considered an affront to her honor when they learned that dourine was an equine sexually transmitted disease.[35] The night before she arrived, she once again ate her blanket, but a new one with ribbons and insignia was made just in time for her disembarkation

Despite a couple of nigger-tier breeds no one can deny that the good dog breed's generally more than make up for the rest of their race in terms of worth, less so in modern times but that's a symptom of decaying culture more than anything.
A horse on the other hand, simply has no relatable term for the relationship we have.
A horse is man's Horse.
A man is horse's Man.

Dog may be mans best friend, but Horse helped us write history.

Realistically, to the extent that we can speak of "realistic" things in Technicolor Tiny Horse Land?

She's probably a lot bigger than most of them, with the possible exception of the Princesses.

They would treat her as a curiosity, I think, just because she would (I assume) be a non-sentient animal that vaguely resembled them in some ways.

Assuming she got turned into a cute talking pony? Holy shit.

>the new pony's been drinking again, and telling stories

>"They just kind of stalled there, and our radio guy--kid from Detroit named Kanisky, real nice guy, got on the blower and called for air support."
>"Bout a dozen Corsairs and Able Dogs that were waiting on station peeled off and laid into th' gooks with rockets an' napalm an' twenny mike-mike."
>"And that broke 'em, and they fell back, still screamin' like demons and blowin' them fuckin' bugles."
>"Must have left a million fuckin' crispy critters stuck in the wire, I tell you what."
>ponies all stare at her horrified
>but the other new creature, the human
>he keeps buying her drinks
>and he's laughing
>ponies have asked him why he does this

>>
>>30223190
Nigga, how much of a cityfag are you that you've never managed to pet a horse?

Their manes feel like really thick human hair, and their fur is very stiff and short so it's not really all the soft. Also riding one is one hell of a leg workout.
>>
>>30223190
IRL horses tend to be skittish and unpredictable with humans they haven't seen before, and even people whose scent the horse recognizes will occasionally manage to startle or annoy them enough that the horse will stomp them to death or bite their faces off. It's an occupational hazard of being around animals that are much larger and stronger than any human. This is why large animal vets are big fans of "chemical restraint," which basically means the horse is sedated to the point of barely being able to stand, and may have head and feet immobilized anyway.

Sgt. Reckless appears to have been an uncommonly calm and docile horse. Not every horse is nearly so friendly or predictable.

>Nigga, how much of a cityfag are you that you've never managed to pet a horse?
It's not so much that I'm a cityfag as it is that I just don't own any horses, nor do I know anyone who owns them

Sometimes when I drive in the rural areas I see horses and I always like to look at them as I go by, but that's about it. I'm not going to be a massive creepo and ask some stranger if I can pet their horses.

>>30223234
That's completely untrue. A horse might bite but they run away from anyone they don't trust, and most of the time they just walk. Any horse that's ever been around people is going to be ok, but you still respect them just like a strange dog.
>>
>>30223308
Yeah. They're beautiful animals generally. Most every culture seems to consider them very aesthetically pleasing. Especially in Western Europe there's still, 2500 years later, a cultural distaste a lot of people have for the idea of eating horse meat, which may or may not have its original roots in the Celtic cult of the goddess Epona, Goddess of Horses, who would punish those who mistreated horses with sickness and bad luck.

Not even talking just about adorable little Mongolian ponies like Sgt. Reckless. Thoroughbreds are graceful creatures, for all their size and power. We never see them without a jockey on their backs running around a dusty track, but they're amazing to watch, just running around a field. Arabian horses, especially the mares, have big expressive eyes and long pretty eyelashes, and slender feminine muzzles.

And they have enduring cultural associations, as symbols. Horses mean freedom, swiftness, grace, speed, and (oddly) toughness. That last one is a little odd because vets can tell you that horses, for all their size and strength, are tremendously fragile creatures. They have to be put down when they break a leg because they have poor circulation in their extremities and damaged leg bone for them almost never heals, and unlike dogs they're too heavy to hobble around with three legs. Surgery of any kind is tremendously risky on horses. Just putting a horse under general anesthesia has about a 1% chance of killing them--they go into cardiac arrest, or they stumble and fall in the stall and break a bone, or they collapse at an awkward angle that compresses a blood vessel long enough for tissue to start dying, or they just stop breathing--before the vet even gets out the scalpels and saws. That's how Sgt. Reckless died, by the way--see the Wikipedia article. She was running around a paddock for exercise and got tangled in some barbed wire. They put her under anesthesia to treat her wounds and her heart just stopped.
>>

Horses are actually fairly good natured animals, they won't go outright attacking you if it sees you just standing a few meters away.
Basically, don't be a fucking retard who thinks a half ton to a ton of almost pure muscle animal is going to like a complete stranger run right up to it and quickly slapping his big greasy hand right onto its face.
>>
>>30223377
As much as I admire them (and my naive idealization of what I think they're like), I don't think I could ever own one. They're so expensive to maintain, and I don't know the first thing about horse care. Plus, they're so easily breakable, like you said. That's pretty heartbreaking.

Pictures of them and drive-by admiring is probably the closest I'll get.

Oddly enough though horses, like humans, are some of the only mammals who use sweat to regulate their body temperature, giving them nearly endless endurance when it comes to running while many other animals would just overheat and die if they kept going.

the problem with your vapid opinion is the idea that horses will suffer from being in close quarters, horses in most circumstances are locked up alone in a stall for hours at night when they don't sleep and they don't like it and it's not good for them. they need to be with the rest of the heard. Second. There is no fucking way in the world it is worse than the derby, who don't just feed the horses shitty food, but ride them when they are too young, resulting in crippled horses, that usually don't live useful lives beyond adulthood.

A filly being raised to 2-3 years old and living together with its family the whole time to be farmed for its meat is more human, but of course most of humanity abhors horse meat, so they go to places like the derby where they treate them even worse then sell them off to be dogfood.

It's cultural. For thousands of years horses were too badly needed, for transportation, for agriculture. They were indispensable beasts of burden, there was no substitute for them. Humans lived and worked with them too closely and came to view horses with the sort of affection we think of as being reserved for pets, dogs and cats. And as internal combustion engines replaced horses for farm and transport labor a smaller and smaller number of people have owned horses as basically extremely expensive high-maintenance pets.

As mentioned above, among the Celts there was a cult of the goddess Epona (yes, the video game people named Link's pony for her) which became very popular with the Romans. Epona would punish you with sickness or bad luck if you mistreated horses. It would be a stretch to say horses were worshipped but it wasn't as far short of that as you might think.

Even people who've never seen horses except on TV still think of them as enormous cuddly pets--which they really aren't, but this is about perception. Eating horse meat is looked at in much the same way as eating dog or cat meat would be. Since you asked "why." Fried cat might taste better than fried chicken for all I know, but I am not going to eat the neighbors' pet cat. I'm not going to give money to people who set up a factory to raise "battery kittens" for food, either.
>>
>>30225452
Oh. And outside the West? In the Moslem world, horses are considered, if not holy, then something close to it. Mohammed was very enthusiastic about horses and said that Allah created something very special and beautiful in them, something with a spark of the divine. The Koran says that horses were made from the swift south wind and Allah's own breath.

Oh, and if you think American women are goofy for horses, talk to an Arab some time. All this is, again, cultural. There is not, so far as science has determined, an "I love horses" gene that people have in some parts of the world and not in others. But culture is powerful.

Horses are at least theoretically more resistant to this kind of thing and can even survive, for a time, on feed that's mostly sawdust. They are hind gut fermenters, meaning they have multiple stomach-like organs, sort of like a cow, and in the rearmost one before the large intestine begins, a population of symbiotic bacteria break down cellulose and turn a portion of it into digestible starches. In theory.

In fact, yeah, horses eat just about anything they can get in their mouths, including the occasional bit of sharp scrap metal, jagged broken plastic, or whatever, requiring either emergency abdominal surgery or euthanasia. Even without eating dangerous sharp foreign matter, horses are also prone to a condition called "colic," which is rather different from the digestive upset that human infants get that is called by the same name. They can eat too much too fast and get a potentially lethal blockage of solid matter somewhere in the 100+ feet of tubing between mouth and asshole, which may require a veterinary surgeon to fix. For horses, an upset stomach is SRS BZNS.
>>
>>30228829
>requiring either emergency abdominal surgery or euthanasia.
>euthanasia

God fucking damn it, why must these beautiful creatures be so good at fucking DYING
>>
>>30228873
They're as fragile as they are beautiful.

Sgt. Reckless lived over twenty, maybe as much as twenty-five years. That's long enough for most breeds of horse to die of old age, by which I mean, get cancer, or have a fatal heart attack while running in the paddock, or a stroke, or get crippling arthritis requiring (again) euthanasia.

For having been born into a war, she was a damn lucky little pony. She had a good life, was able to be bred and was mother to at least one foal that was also accepted into service by the Marines, lived longer than a lot of her kind despite the dangers she faced, and at the end died painlessly. Some humans don't have it so good.

I do think they would, because building walls is more expensive than not building walls, and keeping a horse away from its herd for long periods of time will make it more agressive and harder to handle, not less. they wouldn't be whiped and forced to wear bits, they wouldn't be shoed, they wouldn't have anyone on their backs, their job would be to sit in a slightly cramped open space and eat. that's it.

That's cultural, I think. It's one of those differences between North American culture in particular and East Asian culture.

In the US and Canada, my wild guess is that it might be because we have this long cultural tradition of living in small frontier towns that were at least occasionally subject to things like floods, Indian raids, and so on. People learned to cooperate, because it increased the odds of survival, for everyone. So even a hundred and fifty years later we still have a culture where it's normal to want to help our neighbors in little ways--holding a door, offering to help with yard work--that look odd to people from other cultures. See also, "high trust society."

In East Asia in particularly, there are words for people who run into their neighbor's fields uninvited and try to help with the harvest, or whatever. Bad ones. It has long had very bad cultural associations with people who tried to put someone else in a position of being obligated to them and using that against them. See also, "low trust society." Even in Japan, where people trust one another an awful lot more than they do in, say, Korea or China, if you run up and try to carry someone's groceries, you probably aren't going to get thanked. You're going to get a nasty look.

>The Parthian shot is a light horse military tactic made famous in the West by the Parthians, an ancient Iranian people. While in, real or feigned, retreat their horse archers would turn their bodies back in full gallop to shoot at the pursuing enemy. The maneuver required superb equestrian skills, since the rider's hands were occupied by his composite bow. As the stirrup had not been invented at the time of the Parthians, the rider relied solely on pressure from his legs to guide his horse.

So, historical horse thread?

Even the Grecian gods were horsefuckers:
>Three thousand steeds had he that pastured in the marsh-land; mares were they. rejoicing in their tender foals. Of these as they grazed the North Wind became enamoured, and he likened himself to a dark-maned stallion and covered them; [225] and they conceived, and bare twelve fillies. These, when they bounded over the earth, the giver of grain, would course over the topmost ears of ripened corn and break them not, and whenso they bounded over the broad back of the sea, would course over the topmost breakers of the hoary brine. I don't get this retarded "every time a thread dies it's a tragedy" mindset. Just accept the fact that all threads eventually die due to a lack of interest/content.

You people just don't know how to enjoy something in moderation. Everything needs to fucking last forever, and you will happily spam threads with bumps or garbage content (aka green) to keep it up. That's what's killing /mlp/. Dozens of threads constantly bumped to the top with no or shitty content because there's a couple dozen fags who just can't let go. It's like telling the same joke over and over and over and then wondering why people leave the room.

Let this thread die. Save the pics and enjoy the memory of it. Give people an opportunity to come up with something new instead of artificially prolonging the old.

Boards with no activity die. People look at them and say "gee, this thing from a month ago is still on Page One. Fuck that, no one's here."

What's killing /mlp/ is lack of traffic and part of that is due to lack of content. There was plenty of green five years ago, when this place had twenty times the post traffic it does now. It didn't keep people out, it brought them in.

What's killing this board is the nosedive in quality in the TV show the past few seasons, culminating with hustling the prior protagonist offstage to turn it into the Poochie & Pals Pony Show. If everyone who loved the show in 2012 were still watching it, they'd still be coming here and this place would get a lot more traffic than it does.

Look at Equestria After Dark. Dead and gone. Look at MLPchan. Dead and gone. Look at Ponychan. In a coma, on life support, plug will get pulled Real Soon Now. Look at FIMfiction--traffic has fallen off so much since 2012-2013 that Knighty says there's not enough ad revenue to keep the lights on and he's going to turn it into a "general fanfiction page," and open the place up to the pimply thirteen-year-old autists to post their crayon-quality Sonic fanfic.

This place is dying fast. Lack of content and lack of activity are symptoms of that, but they're also partially causes. No one wants to come to an empty forum where no one will respond or even see anything they post.

You're right about the traffic being gone, but not for those reasons. It's been 7 years now. No matter how popular something is, interest wanes and dies out eventually. The show could have the exact same formula and characters now as it did in S1, but guess what? It'd still be the same. Sure some of the new stuff put off some people, but not nearly enough to kill it.

It's a board dedicated to a single show. This was bound to happen, in fact I'm shocked it took as long as it did to happen

This applies to FIMfiction as well. It was bound to happen, and opening it up to all fan-fiction was inevitable

In either story I think she would have a kindred connection with Nurse Redheart.

>>
>>30270092
>Sergeant logo
But that would imply she got her cutie mark when she became a sergeant. Surely she'd have realized her special talent before then. How else would she have progressed through the ranks?
>>
>>30270092
>http://www.strawpoll.me/13146845/
Marines logo seems like it would be a pain to draw. I like the Sergeant logo better.
>>
>>30270092
Marine symbol? That or an antitank gun.
>>
>>30270114
This, Sergeant isn't a special talent, there are thousands upon thousands of Sergeants. Also It implies she will be a Sergeant forever?
>>
>>30270128
Anit-tank gun over a heart. Simple and thematic.
>>
>>30270123
You know, that's a fair point. The difficulty of the Marines logo might deter artists from drawing her (or at least her mark).

And there's the argument against Sergeant logo...

I think the winged helmet is a good combination of military and courier symbolism. Plus it's not too hard to draw. Though it's a little vague.

Anti-tank gun themes seems good.
Perhaps a deviation of the weapon's symbol? Maybe a purple, heart-shaped one?

>>
>>30270114
Animals don't, generally, "progress through the ranks"; they're given a rank so that their handler doesn't abuse them and that's typically that.
Reckless got promoted twice after the war ended, but as far as I can tell spent the entire war as a Corporal.
If we're going with >>30269318, then Staff Sergeant stripes would make perfect sense, since that was her rank when she passed.
>>
>>30270234
The stripes with a purple heart instead of the guns??
>>
>>30270234
This makes sense, although I would still prefer a purple variation of the AT symbol.

If you want something really simple to draw, there are the NATO (prior, US military) standardized unit symbols. The one for "antitank gun" isn't here, but I will MSpaint it. This will take a minute or two.
>>
>>30270234
That's true, but a lot of art involves pony Reckless in the human world. It wouldn't really reconcile there. But I guess it's not really that important.

The same reason ponies are named at birth after talents/purposes that would be impossible to know for anyone.

This. And it isn't (necessarily) on a white background, so long as there's enough contrast for the shape to be visible. Think of what I've drawn here as being written on a transparent sheet of plastic with a black Sharpie. It is perfectly okay and acceptable to overlay this on a pink heart shape, for example.

She loves her friends, but fuck with her and she will wreck your shit with direct fire from crew-served heavy weapons.
>>
>>30270291
Though the other thing is that she was a corporal during the war... But I guess you could say that her fate was to eventually become a sergeant. You're right though, it doesn't really matter, no matter how much my autism thinks it does.

A purple heart? That'd be 3 in 1.

This got posted while I was doodling some ideas with NATO symbols

a, b and c are combinations of the AT gun (triangle) and Recon/Cavalry (Diagonal) symbols.
d is a slightly modified AT gun + "carried by animal" modifier symbol.

Personal favorite is A since it kinda echoes sergeant stripes, but what do you think ?

This is starting to get into CMC Cutie Mark territory and would probably be almost as needlessly hard to draw as an EGA.

Well... again, not an artist.

Denoting a unit as "cavalry" generally means superimposing that lower-left-to-upper-right diagonal line over the existing rectangular symbol, something like this.

And it looks kind of goofy because the central dot is lower than the centerline of the symbol to make it look more centered in the triangle part. But you get the idea.
>>
>>30270405
what if it was a purple, heart shaped poker chip with an anti-tank gun in place of the value mark and it's on a helmet as her CM?
>>
>>30270374
>almost as needlessly hard to draw as an EGA.
That one looks a bit hard already...
I like the purple heart, but something needs to be inside it: something that could be done in a light color or white.
>>
>>30270418
>a purple, heart shaped poker chip
This sounds good
>>
>>30270416
Yeah, I know the symbols aren't used that way, but I wanted to keep the idea while making it look good-ish.
I don't think the dot is all really useful anyways, AT + cavalry is probably enough.
>>
We're overcomplicating this.
Cutie Marks shouldn't be visually complicated.
SSgt stripes are already perfect.
>>
>>30270444
This.
Although I wanted it to be a purple heart shape...
>>
>>30270444

>>30270449

>>
>>30270454
Eh, I just liked it because it also matches Aryanne's mark: she was my favorite military-themed pony until now. Also, I like it because it's cute, as cutie-marks should be.
>She could just wear an actual purple heart award sometimes.
I'd rather she just wear the Sgt. symbol on her helmet, like in >>30217931 , while having the heart as her mark.
>>
>>30270472
The trouble with that is that a cobbled-together antitank cavalry symbol isn't as recognizable, impactful, and iconic as what Aryanne's got going on, so it doesn't quite work.

>>
>>30270488

>>
>>30270492
Correct. One and done, like a good thread should be. The reality is, you never will see THIS thread again. You can try to copy it by making a general, but the spirit will pass on while you animate a corpse.

The goal is to make creative threads like this one, not to turn a creative thread into a shit heap through brute repetition.
>>
>>30270502
So you DO want the board to remain stagnant. K.
>>
>>30270502

>>
>>30270510

>>
>>30270563
Some ideas have more steam in them than others.
R63 General, for example, was good for at least twenty threads.
You can't just arbitrarily say that 1500 posts should be more than enough for literally anything.
>>
>>30270563
>>30270523
We don't have to run it into the ground or turn it into a general, but it seems there's at least enough interest in a second thread. I don't think that'd be such a cancerous thing. Besides, we're just getting started here. I feel like once we decide on a cutie mark, it'll really get rolling.
>>
>>30270592
Yeah. I'm thinking something like the bottom left of pic related, only all in purple.

Though if you insist on purple, use the color scheme in >>30270699 but keep it a circle, and put a white heart in the center.

I think red/black would suit her color scheme better though.
>>
>>30270647

Apparently she would consume anything--from bacon to expired World War II leftover K-ration canned beans to her own blankets to, on one occasion, several hundred dollars worth of poker chips another Marine had won. She would also drink beer or Coca-Cola with equal apparent enthusiasm.
