So I started reading EWE during my lunch breaks... and stopped about three quarters through. Here's my review.

EWE is a video game wrestling CYOA with an interesting premise, canon characters, weak writing, and weak characterization. And a good eye for comedy even with the difficulty conveying it.

EWE is set in Equestria with the world warped to center around the EWE wrestling show with characters like Celestia, Chrysalis, Sombra, Derpy, Twilight, Starlight, etc. showing up in it. Canon characters are the majority of the cast with a few OCs sprinkled among them. Most of the canon characters talked too so far have shown fandom/episode 100 based personalities. For example: Derpy is obsessed with muffins and Doctor Whooves, Berry Punch is a drunk, Lyra is involved with Bon Bon and obsessed with humans.

The CYOA is very video game-esk in a variety of ways. There's a moral stat (face/heel) and a popularity stat that you get informed of any time they shift. Any time you make a friend it's explicitly stated as if you have an relationship status screen somewhere. And the characters talk very much like a Bethesda game. It's worth noting that the combat is not video game-esk. The only major problem with this is that the face/heel status is treated as a morality bar instead of what it actually means, in that it's updated when you're doing things offstage. Being a face or a heel is something explicitly presented to the audience, who you're friends with privately shouldn't logically affect it.

Now, the biggest problem with the quest, and the reason for my dropping it, is the weakness of the writing. The QM combines two bad writing styles into one: Robotic writing and casual conversational writing. For most of the text it's very bland and mechanical, there's very little tone carried and the dialog doesn't read like it's coming out of a human character. It's very Bethesda style awkward dialog. Periodically, he also diverts into casual conversation with the reader instead of telling a story. Casual conversation is immersion breaking, robotic writing is simply bad writing. There's also a lot of sentence structure problems. Missing words, awkward phrasing and the like.

The flawed writing extends into the combat as well. The wrestling match the MC watched that the QM described play-by-play was about as interesting to read as any of the matches the MC actually participated in. Which is to say you're better off skipping them if you're catching up. Or playing for that matter, the way matches run the QM decides the majority of the moves and then pauses to ask if they want to do the action. They do the action, he decides the next sequence of moves. 'Do the thing' is a major problem with the prompts in general. Now the actual wrestling being bad isn't that big of a deal to most players since they're overtly more interested in the surrounding relationship building/drama, but if you're going into it expecting it to be entertaining you'll be disappointed.

The MC is also very bland and without personality. She seems to be shifting towards being a face slowly by virtue of not being a cunt in the backroom.

While I very much liked the premise of the quest, relationship/reputation building is fun when given a focus of what to achieve, the bad writing simply lost me. If you like the premise and can read through the first couple posts of a random thread and don't mind it, it's definitely worth giving a shot.

It's not meant to be super complicated and hard for anyone to come in and whatever. It's something super simple and easy to jump in.

As for the matches themselves, I'm sorry you didn't like them, but a wrestling match is NOT a fight, and it will never be structured like a fight, or we'll be spending weeks doing one.

If people would like to give gameplans on how to fight said wrestlers, then they can do that, but most of the things I've personally been given for the matches are extremely short term.

And I take it you've never really played any wrestling game because a lot of the shit involved is casual conversations, most of the decisions of those involve having some kind of specific choice.

Super simple/not complicated != bad. Pleeny's writing is super light and easy to get into, it's not bad. Bad writing is on an independent scale.

Indeed, that is one of the problems I had with the matches. It would be vastly improved for the players if you asked for gameplans instead of specific/short term actions, prompting them for choices/decisions that matter instead of defaulting to "Press x to continue". I never asked for matches to be structured like a fight, my criticism is that they're barely played at all currently. The MC watching a fight shouldn't have almost the same amount of player input as the MC participating in a fight. You are right in that you, and any combat focused quest, shouldn't have the players decide on every action or you'll be there forever.

This is something that applies to more than just combat, any CYOA that goes long stretches or sequences of actions without prompts should prompt for general direction/gameplan instead of specific actions. It doubles as a way to speed events up.

Falling back on how your CYOA is like a wrestling game isn't a good excuse for anything. CYOAs aren't video games, treating them like one blindly will result in a lot of bad elements. It's up to you which elements are added/modified/dropped to deal with the format change.

That's the point, I don't hate that aspect of it. A large part of wrestling games is building relationships/reputation while working towards a goal via matches. That premise slots in perfectly with how many players enjoy CYOA. Social management with a goal to work towards as the structure. I dislike the aspects that don't fit in smoothly with the CYOA format and have relayed those to you so that you can think about whether you want to tweak them or not. Dismissing it as "Just not for you" is simply a weak excuse. "Badly handled quests are just not for you" doesn't say anything about me. Bath quests are legitimately just not for me, I don't dislike them because of problems, I dislike them because of their premises and a few conflicts with Bath's style. "In my opinion this was handled badly" is very different from "I just don't like this".

Anyway, there's precious little point in going back and forth like this. You have my criticisms, what you do with them is up to you.

The social game was mostly fine aside from the heel/face stat changing from things that never got reported to the audience. The two stats and relationship pop ups didn't get in the way, it was in the review in case someone doesn't like that kind of video game thing. There's some players that don't mind it and some that hate it for breaking immersion. And a few probably like the explicit knowledge. You know, the funny thing is that I had no intent of this being Cutequestria at all. And if you look any element of it besides Buddy, it really isn't. Soft Serve's wife isn't imprisoned under a laundry basket somewhere. "Bigyou's" plans don't aim to make it so no pony can ever have ice cream again. Canterlot didn't get to look how it did because of pies and water balloons. The 'Cutequestria' theme in GaT is just a side effect of the MC being a literal baby. He's growing and getting smarter little by little, but that isn't enough to eclipse the fact that he's still only like 3 days old or that the players make very little effort to learn things.
