So the """""last""""" Night Delivery thread brings up a good point that we haven't talked about in a while. Blank canvas prompts have the same problem as blank canvas quests, in that without a seed of thought no one thinks of anything particularly good.

In the last Night Delivery thread we saw a good example of forcing structured responses with the Hijack combat parody. Arc got a lot of responses near every prompt because the players had limited things they could do and it was spelled out for them. It made it really easy to throw out suggestions. It also shows the problem with too much structure, in that by the end of it there was only one or two significant responses because the one guy figured out the system and people started relying on him.

In general, I find there to be three kinds of prompts, weak, strong, and structured. Structured is a combat system or an explicit "1: Rape, 2: Don't rape" akin to how Unbound has been. Weak is a simple "wat do" without any thought put behind it and may not be at a significant decision point. Strong prompts are at focused decision points where the players are actually deciding something that matters and suggest things to the players, point them somewhere without pushing them.

The quest with the strongest prompts that didn't dive straight into structured is probably JAD is perfect. The posts are structured around getting to a focused decision point. There was very little 'do the thing' or whiling away time, each post was a distinct segment with a distinct decision. This is also one of the reasons it was a slog to get through, an engaging CYOA doesn't necessarily make for an engaging full read. When he came to a broad decision point, such as being in the middle of town and deciding what to do next, he suggested things the players had planned in the past without forcing that to be the route or mentioned what shops were in the area around them.

Now this isn't to say force your players down any particular route, the intent with strong prompts is to plant a seed of thought and get them thinking. Half the time they won't go with what you put forth, they'll come up with something else instead.

ie: a funny scene where the mare is thrown, skids to a stop but just barely knocks over a fence and profusely apologizes for the very minor damage.

or a more serious scene later down the line where, in the process of a fight, serious damage does happen as a result of her actions and then the character has to deal with that emotionally.

God I feel so awful about not running for such a long time. But between complications with the new house (like not being able to drain a sinkful of water without flooding the basement, and the only available room only having one power plug that's in the middle of the wall and SIDEWAYS) and the lack of money flow to even afford groceries let alone internet, I'm really not sure when the quest will run again.
I will probably have no players by the time I get internet due to lack of interest at this point, and if by some miracle I do then damn I have some determined people playing my quest.
