Starlight in particular. Canon characters can sound fun or not to play. Pinkie could be fun in a SoL miniquest where we get cartoon logic. Playing a young Celestia going on a quest has a lot of potential. I can't think of an quest premise that'd be interesting to play because it starred AJ, Twilight or Rarity, even though I really like Twilight. For example, in Miracle AJ could have been swapped out with innumerable characters and not have changed the quest much or made it more/less interesting to play from what I can tell.

Starlight's particular brand of autism/sociopathy sounds like it'd be fun to play in most scenarios.

AJ being Miracle's MC had several reasons behind it.
Actual spoilers in the spoilers:
First of all, the stealing of memories and hence dilution of identity. There is a very explicit element of cruelty to stealing memories, but it's even worse when, by stealing Applejack's memories, Twilight literally stole her truth-- She doesn't even remember her own name at first, and it takes some time for her to return to her usual self. This is important in-story, as AJ's core strength at any given moment of the story is that her core self isn't something even Twilight, or a reality bending giant, can affect for long. This is a plot point acknowledged by Twilight herself. She nearly caused herself a thrombosis counteracting a mind parasite that wanted to keep her from remembering.
Second, AJ -an earth pony, a farmer- is thrown into a place of death. The tower's been one from the get go, and the first thing she finds inside is that precisely. The tower, were everyone hides behind something, is a subversion of Applejack's own nature and it tries to subvert her in a constant basis.
Third, it was necessary from the get go that the players knew who AJ had been so that they could understand the cruelty of who she was forced to be.
These are the most conceptual and narrative reasons, which I understand are harder to understand without intimate knowledge of the story. More concretely she's an earth pony, so she'd be able to understand the rigorous conditions of the tower and push on. Secondly, her personality simply makes her the mare for the task. The other mane six wouldn't have fared as well as she did.

None of that sounds like anything that couldn't be tweaked to work with any other character. But that's not the point anyway, I was talking about the character adding to the enjoyment of playing just for the character alone. In the "SoL miniquest with cartoon logic", playing to Pinkie's personality adds to the fun. Even granting your reasoning for picking AJ nothing's come out of the quest that made it seem like playing AJ specifically added to the fun.

Like, if Unique replaced Chalk with Starlight, ignoring the lore problems that would come of that, it'd replace a fun to play character with a more fun to play character for the scenario. In Miracle if you replaced AJ with Rarity or some newly created OC just for that role it wouldn't make much difference in a fun to play that character standpoint.

Personalities are great when you hit on one that distinctly adds to the fun of the scenario. I'm pretty sure Chalk was just a Starlight clone because Sloth didn't think a CYOA with an existing character as MC would be popular.

I think the problem with playing canon characters though is what's been mentioned: The players usually don't play canon characters...well canon. AJ in Miracle doesn't act anything close to show AJ and like 99% of other games with canon characters in control the players purposefully went OOC for memes.

Part of this is that the tone of the quest sets up how the character is. It makes sense the players would play AJ like Twilight in a quest like miracle because of all the puzzles and batshit lore. If they were playing AJ correctly pretty much the only reaction they could do is say "what in tarnation". AJ is personality wise not a good fit at all.

Unrelated but similar, if there was much more threats of death/mutilation from the mob/what have you in Dirty Work you'd probably see players argue against taking IC actions that are less optimal like the players seem to like to do. Because the stakes are a lot higher. The conditions of the quest ultimately effect how the players control their MC.

Also I don't know if Unique would be better with Starlight at the helm. If anything it would be worse because a lot of peoples favorite part of Unique was Chalk's characterization from a literal blankslate. Also the whole old-glim nu-glim thing would make Unique Quest probably hilariously outdated after S6 rolled around.

You hit the nail on the head there. Canon MCs, and MCs in general really, should be chosen to match the quest where possible. If there's a lot of lore/information, consider a bookish personality (Twilight), if there's a lot of leadership and social manipulation a sociopath with loose morals (Starlight) would work. Etc etc.

Matching MCs to quests is something that's been overlooked here for quite some time actually. I can't remember it ever being a topic of discussion. If a character matches they'll be more fun to play, which is the +0/+1 factor I was describing.

This reminds me of the whole, "Sunny Days was never that positive despite it being her special talent" thing. A solid chunc of that quest was spent either fighting for survival in the Arena or being threatened by, the master and his wife. Whenever the was downtime and she wasn't trying to deal with the fact that she just killed a pony Sunny Days was very positive despite her situation. We're talking about a young mare who after being beat down by a pegasus in the heavy rain and tossed into a hole, told her master's bitch-boy that she didn't really hate him or the unicorns at large. This is also the same pony who tried her best to make friends with the ponies she spared in the arena after their fights regardless of how badly she was hurt by them. Honestly she wasn't unreasonably happy while bad things happened but when she could she did try to brighten up other ponies days, almost regardless of who that pony was.
