Gunpla / Plamo General

***READ THE GUIDE***

https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1Tr8UyF2Xg5Ojqw0sxcO7oIG7IIsJPes3lMO5pHZKu5o

***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here.
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

Our next Group Build!

Field Repair

Basically what this means is that rather than the mobile suit being fresh out of a factory, it's quite the opposite. Whether it's trudging through dense jungles or dodging debris in asteroid belts, your mobile suit has seen some better days.
You've been out in the field for quite a long time now, nearly half a year of active duty in the front lines and your personal mobile suit's pretty banged up. What's worse is the fact that there isn't a maintenance bay within several thousand kilometers of your local area that's capable of making any major repairs. Your unit's engineering crew has resorted to patch work and jury-rigging to keep your machine operational. Stray fire might have crippled its legs and arms or otherwise dealt considerable damage to a mobile suit's systems meanwhile some units have simply lost bits of armor and panels to the elements and have been forced to patch weld metal sheets over the exposed inner workings.
In any case it's beaten to hell but somehow you and your team have somehow kept it chugging along and now command's ordered all units operating in your theatre to fall back to form a defensive line against the enemy offensive.

A kit I fucked up a while ago, so I sprayed enamel primer yesterday and getting to work today. I'm working on thinning my paint and working layer by layer. I'm hoping to end up with a desert ground type zaku. I'll touch up some rough surfaces, try a weathered effect, and add a dullcote as well

>>
Yes I'm a retard for asking but:
If I want to remove seam lines on a kit I don't intend to paint, Is super gluing them together, then removing the excess glue with a hobby the best method or is there a better way?
I don't have access to the Tamiya cement crap.
>>
>>13787344
Lol
>>
>>13787336
You should at least put panel lines on that.
>>
>>13787357
You answered your own question. You use liquid plastic model cement to weld seams, superglue doesn't work the same. It actually dries harder than polystyrene.
>I don't have access to the Tamiya cement crap.
I actually prefer Plastruct® Bondene™ myself, but any liquid plastic model cement will work about the same. Quit being an idiot and figure out how to get the right materials.
>>
>>13787357
You have internet access. You have access to any material you need. Try Amazon. Try eBay. You can get anything you need sent anywhere in the world. You have no excuse.

I sure hooe this is your first time, because otherwise you sound like a bitch to us folks who had to work from single illustrations that weren't meant to be ever turned into 3d-objects or from Youtube screenshots of stuff that moves by clipping through itself.

>>13787413
Pretty much all shops sell some brand of "hobby" glue for scale model kits. Even Home Depot should have at least one of those. If you're totally cray-cray, you could of course get high-quality pigmets, mix them to have the corret hue, grind them down to baby powder consistency and apply them across a gap filled with superglue. That'd fill the gap in the correct colour with the glue of your choice

Also
>superglue
>spoils within days once you've broken the seal
>cheaper than a proper polystryen glue that will remain useable for decades

Actually getting things like alclad paints, gaia notes psints, some aerosol things is pretty much impossible if you can not buy it locally - most international sellers don't bother with sea shipping and shipping it with airmail is forbidden.

Can anyone help me determine the two colors of blue on Gundam Heavyarms from the Endless Waltz movie? I have a MG heavyarms that I'm preparing to paint like the movie version and can't exactly determine the two colors.

Pic of what I'm talking about attached.

It looks like a dark/navy blue and then a grey blue or just regular blue?

As of right now I have a can of tamiya "navy" paint that I was going to use for the darker blue. but other than that I'm not sure. I'm asking because I'm colorblind and cannot accurately tell the shades of blue as sometimes they look grey and other times blue/green/grey.

Thanks anons

I've been working on my HGUC RX-78-2. It's not much but it's the first Kit I have done and actually painted, and it makes a world of difference. It wasn't anything special, just cans of Tamiya color but I do like the results. I didn't have anything to panel line with after I painted so it's not totally done.

I want to get a little better at painting on HG kits before I move on to the MGs I have in my backlog.

because LED gimmick and variants.

PGs are nice but they cater to the lowest common denominator, which is why we got a PG Strike Freedom instead of the Gundam that the series it is from is NAMED after. Why we got a WZC instead of the superior Wing Zero. Why we got a Red Frame Astray, at all.

We'll get a PG Sinanju before a Nu, mark my words

the horror of the melt-nu drove him to insanity
>>
>>13789509

nu is absolutely lowest common denominator tier though, it's one of the most popular suits period

Unicorn got one because it's a good "final piece" for the unicorn line

PG Nu is like the Half-Life 3 and FF7 remake of gunpla, it's the sure-fire hit they are in no rush to release and will do it when they need a boost

also I bet the expectations would be enormously high and they might want to keep it back for a tech jump

So I have a question here, Would it be worth it to spray a clear matte finish on my parts and THEN do my detail painting, then clear gloss, decal and panel line wash, and then clear matte again? I'm thinking that that first coat of cleare matte can work kind of like primer but still allow the color to show through. What do you guys think?

Does flat paints like Mr.Hobby H20 have the same looks as a can of flat topcoat? Can i mix it with non-flat paint to make it flat? I want the flat look on my models and i don't like the spray can.
>>
>>13790720
You're forgetting the shipping fees. In total he's only paying 5 dollars more than if he had ordered from Japan, most likely. And the fact that he probably wouldn't have to wait several weeks for delivery makes those few extra bucks worth it for some people. And it's always good to order from local suppliers, it keeps it alive and shows them that there are demand for the kits. You have no idea how many places there are that are perpetually out of stock because they rarely buy more than a few kits to resell, because of the perceived low demand and lack of interest.
>>
>>13789335
Okay, that explains that. Pointer for future projects: Greenstuff isn't particularily good for non-organic shapes. Miliput white takes much better edges.
>>
>>13790794
Yes, basically clear clear act as gloss topcoat and flat clear act as flat topcoat.

If you want to mix a flat paint, use the flat base, H40 for Mr. Hobby

Short answer
Read guide
Long answer
Look up the brand of paint and the paint type it is
Most acrylics thin with alcohol but some are vetter thinned with water. Depending on what you are using the paint for will depend on what you use to thin.
People have used water and acrylic as panel wash.
And how you plan to apply the paint with hand or air brush determines hilow you want to thin

Who has experience with Taobao? I want to buy G-Bouncer and 1.5 Gundam kits, it says they're only 100 Yuan, which is really nice. However under the color option it says "缺货~全额预定~!" on the G-Bouncer and "暫時沒貨,不要拍" on the 1.5 Gundam.

Now both say add to cart/Buy now and I can get to the purchase screen, however I'm a little hesitant because of them both saying "out of stock" in the color section.

Does this mean they're in-stock or not?

Morons that like to use the "gunpla is freedom" card are usually the ones that really suck at nub removal, seam welding, gap filling, masking and painting.
When it's used in a show like Build Fighters it's used by people that are REALLY good at everything I just mentioned. When it's used in the real world it's usually by people that have shit skills and think they are above criticism.
Ever since Build Fighters aired that's all I seem to hear, especially when people defend their piss poor attempt at gunpla. If you use that phrase then you probably can't build properly and didn't read the guide. That means you suck at life.

dont even bother trying to order directly from Taobao, you cant make accounts, for from or have them ship to your country. go to a middleman website like Bhiner and search for items through there. i think Taobao middlemen are usually only worth the price for unique third party items usually only found in China, after international shipping and middleman fees (100 RMB is already about $16) you are probobly going to end up paying more than just through a regular online retailer. also that place is flooded with knock-offs; luckily they are priced appropriately so if a HG is selling for $5 its fake, period.

How are the various Graze HGs?

I'd rotate the back leg at the thigh so the foot is pointing more towards the side. WOuld look more natural. Otherwise great posing!

First timer here too, and I gotta say that looks pretty sweet. Planning on getting one myself.

Anyways, I'd suggest panel lining it, if you want. It's a bit hard to do, but it makes everything stand out much more!

Any creamy putty will do, really. You might be able to get revell plasto locally, but feel free to try 2-component putty if the marks are large enough.

Which day in February does the prototype dom hg release?
>>
>>13797111
The Graze especially is a miracle of a kit. Too bad we are getting a million variants of it.
>>
Guys, I'm looking to make an original-but-fluffy "yet another late war Zeon prototype from Pezun."

I was honestly just going to recolor a late OYW HGUC and add on Builders Parts or System Weapons and say it had a better generator or magnetic coating (or some other mcguffin/gimmick) in my head.

But I'd like to ask your opinion for the HGUC base:
Should I work with the Gelgoog Jager, or with the Zaku II Kai?

The Jager is vaguely older and less able to be customized (I have a vanilla one I built), but I've never built the slightly newer Zaku II Kai to tell.

Should I just give up entirely and fuck around with a much newer Zaku F2 kit?

What would give it that old MSV feel of both being clunky but also a prototype high-spec Zeon MS (like in old pictures of the Galbaldy a or Pezun Dowadge)? Or what's the fluffiest/true-to-setting?
>>
>>13797361
The Gelgoog Jager is a brick, you can't really get a decent pose out of it. I'd go for the Zaku F2 or Kai.
>>
>>13797411
You think a Dom is worth exploring? At all, and yeah, after playing around with the Gelgoog some more, it's fun and sexy but poseability (and customization) is crap (which is understandable, since the kit is ancient at this point).

I think otherwise I'll go with the Kai kit. It's barely any older than the Jager (and much younger than the Zaku F2 kit), but it's vaguely more reminiscent of the Act Zaku prototype.

Any other MS kits worth considering? I'm not going too far with a custom build; it'll essentially be what the Gelgoog A Baoa Qu Battle Type is to a Gelgoog vanilla (which is just verniers tacked on and the armor futzed with a little).
>>
>>13797426
If you want a HG Dom it'd be best to wait cause there's likely gonna be a revive very soon

Eh, the gyan was the next revive and there's been like zero additional info past the announcement. Dom won't be for a while
>>
>>13797529
Yeah, I was also making a space-type late war suit, so even a vanilla ground-type Dom wouldn't help me much.

I can actually understand giving the Gouf a Revive kit, but why the hell did the Gyan get one? Are they popular at all in any respect?
>>
>>13797538
I like the Gyan ;_:
>>
Is there a type of nipper that excels at making precise cuts from sprues?
>>
>>13797538
Probably because one of the side characters in BF used a Gyan and he became popular for no real reason.
>>
>>13797549

what are you using now
>>
>>13797546
I like the Gyan too, but not so much that I would make the business decision to release a Revive kit of it before a grunt MS like the Dom or Gelgoog.

>>13797550
Didn't the Gyan get a HGBF kit? Or was it not made? I didn't follow any of the HGBF releases aside from the option part kits (long, long, long since overdue from Bandai).
>>
>>13797569
They made that valuable pod thing for the Gyan to upgrade it

/gpg/, help me. I haven't been able to build my HGUC Zaku I lately due to work and just plain lack of enthusiasm. I've got more kits to do and am planning on having more shipped. The unbuilt kits I have now are just sitting on a shelf or are chilling out in a bin in my closet.

How do you stay motivated throughout a build? What techniques do you employ to keep yourself on track?

Tamiya Basic Tool Kit.
>>13797580
A nipper called "God Hand?" You must be joking.
>>
>>13797679

Yeah, the system weapons feel a bit different though
>>
>>13797695

you should look at a set of tamiya side cutters or Xuron 2175ETs whichever is easier to get, both are great. If you have big hands the Xurons will feel better. Avoid the Mr. Hobby nippers, they are the same style as the tamiya but worse.

God Hands are great if you can get them for less than 60 bucks, but probably not worth more than that

Amiami seems to be the best but i dont like how they dont tell you shipping until after your order, but i think you can cancel before it ships.

Use another site that gives shipping info to get an estimate first. If you do it too much on amiami, they'll get pissy at you and ban you.

HLJ seemed to be about 11-12 on the fuck you wait on the boat shipping. so still 5-ish cheaper then amazon atleast

yeah still waiting for Amiami to get back on the pricing but guessing from previous purchases it should be around $35-6 so i'll give it a go.

Any good custom ideas for a Gouf though? i cant think of any Aces besides Ramba that used it. i'll probly leave it vanilla since i Ral was great.

that aside,

Heres my still in progress Anavel Gato Gelgoog, i think i need to top coat before panel lining a fully painted kit? so i'm stuck waiting for the snow to melt. not sure what else to do after the panel line, decals.
>>
it's great fun watching the spammer cycle through all his different personas when he gets ignored. my fav is when he replies to himself
>>
>>13798311
i put on a coat of clear(gloss or semigloss) so the paint wont chip when applying decals or panel lining. i do it just to be safe
>>
>>13798311
You can always make up your own ace, ace squad or ace with squad mates.

You could show an ace progression set of models, going from a Zaku 1 or 2 to the Gouf and further on with the ace's colors.

Also keep in mind the the 2.0 Gouf can be built as the A or B type.
The A being normal hands and no heat rod.
B is the classic Gouf.

Cut it as far away from the actual piece as possible. Use a sharp knife to whittle small shavings off of the nub at a time, and then finish with progressively finer grits of sand paper. Or go a step further and break out the plastic polish.
