I was in Japan for two years. Xenophobia was everywhere, lots of "Japanese only" places, getting turned away from onsen, restaurants, etc. I'm white, conservative looking, no tats or piercings, clean, very careful about etiquette.

They smile, but it's because they're nervous.

Foreigners are different, creepy, unpredictable, and unwelcome. Get past that, and they're some of the most rude, unpleasant people you've ever met. They're obsessed with conformity to the point that the whole culture behaves like they're collectively autistic.

Foreigners are blamed for all crime. Paranoia is incredibly high. More than once, I got on a bus only to have the bus driver announce "a foreigner has just gotten on, watch your purses and wallets". I was usually in a business suit. I had it happen a couple of times a month. It was fucking weird.

Maybe Japanese women used to be more interested in "experimenting" with foreign men, but that was another time. Now, they're not even interested in their own men.

Some want some kind of perfect Asian men like they see in dramas, but even then, it's more like they would want to pose for a few pictures to show their friends and then move on. Some of the most sexless, boring, and bitchy people you'll ever meet...there's a reason their population is in a steep decline.

Feminism is a huge thing there now. I behaved just like I would with a female coworker in the US...avoid contact as much as possible, never discuss anything other than work, never compliment or criticize, when talking, avoid looking anywhere below their chin, no joking, interrupting, being anywhere alone with them (especially elevators or offices), etc.

Even so, I was spoken to for making a coworker uncomfortable because I walked past her cubicle to go to the bathroom. I ended up having to walk clear around the other side of the floor so I wouldn't pass her desk and make her feel "unsafe"

I went to a supermarket this summer which had a nice section of fish and stuff and the price for non farmed was 120 SEK/kg, while farmed was 130 SEK/kg. I asked the guy behind the counter if people actually buy the farmed one, and he said that maybe 1 in a 100 persons do.

I felt relieved that only 1% of the population is that retarded.
