Manhattan has denisty of 27,672.6/km2... it's definitely an extreme case. At this point you need highrises and skyscrapers to keep all this enterprise, trade, business working.

That's a really bad idea, more transportation time, and you need to expand the subways, electrical, gas and water networks.

I think they should double the building height and install light tubes to bring some sunlight to street level.

You have any idea how long it takes to construct a stone and wood structure?

Not to mention the fact that stone and wood is less robust than reinforced concrete.

A lot of mosques don't.

>>who the fuck wants the centre of the world most influential city in XX/XXI century to look like this

It doesn't have to look like that.
But Regent Street, London, looks better than anything in NYC. Most of The City is full of old beautiful buildings, you just dont normally see them because photographs of The City are blocked by the dick-measuring skyscrapers screaming "ME ME ME ME ME ME".
>>
>>52992895
>You have any idea how long it takes to construct a stone and wood structure?
A yearish.

And reinforced concrete is useless. It has a lifetime of a few decades before water/moisture causes it to crack.

No, building out of stone is already not natural, timberwork too, everything manmade is not natural

and how do you even imagine wooden/stone city?

wooden shit is easily burning

and the only advantage of stone over concrete is muh traditional/natural look

even Romans already 2000 years ago used a fucking concrete to build cities

Your Regent Street is screaming ME ME ME ME! too or atleast it was, a long time ago. It was built to impress aswell, but back then people had quite limited resources/capabilities.

Colosseums are another superior traditional structure. Built right in the city centre for great atmosphere, look good from the outside at street level, and last a long time.

Modern stadiums are normally quite impersonal at ground level, and are normally built miles away from anything.

Cambridge:

What comes to mind?
Old beautiful spires? Beautiful buildings?
Indeed.

But look, in the 20th century Cambridge got a Modernist extension.
Pic related.
It is called Arbury. It is about the same size as Cambridge's centre, and is connected to it. Indeed, it is a part of Cambridge. So now about half of Cambridge looks like pic related.

Pic related is the ideal Modernist piece. To a modernist, it is perfect.
Cambridge should be very thankful for having a Modernist attachment, don't you think?

I didn't have any image about Cambridge. Do British people imagine countryside when they hear Cambridge? Are the people in this pic supposed to belong to Cambridge university?

I think the bad weather just makes it look worse. Many Nordic + German cities share this type of architecture, but I don't know if Denmark is as colorful. I think they are, though.

>>53002079
Cheers. It really is a mixed bag of a city though. One moment you'll be surrounded by large nice quarters of ornamented buildings, and the next you'll be in a concrete brutalist ghetto. Some like this aspect of Oslo, though. You never really know what you'll get there.

It's actually the tallest church in Oslo, but it's not all that impressive even when compared to other churches around the country. And Oslo, considering our richness, is honestly subpar. Architecture is one thing, but a lot of streets and buildings are badly maintained and many places in the centre are extremely filthy.

It's because Islamic architecture is highly inspired by Byzantine architecture(Orthodox core) and of course Russian sacred architecture is highly inspired by Byzantine architecture too.

>people who don't understand that building height is a function of land value that can only be limited by zoning laws

cities should only have short buildings = autism. People like living closer to the center of cities, which leads to higher rents which makes taller buildings more profitable. It's simple economics, forcing buildings to be a shorter is a lot less efficient.

But on the other hand, paris and many other european cities are beautiful for the restrictions of height (and colour) of buldings. They succeed to make a lot of tourists to visit there for that.

By the way,

I stayed there for a few days, crazy place. My bed was against a wall on three sides and my shower over my toilet.

Good indian restaurant there.

I agree. I think skyscrapers belong where there are people, thus in a city. Middle of nowhere towers kind of defeat the purpose if you ask me. The only problem is historic centres, which there are many of in Europe. Here in Norway that wouldn't be an issue with Oslo for example, as there's hardly any history left in the core part of the centre, but other European cities might suffer from this. Many new developments however take this into account by building whole villages outside of towns with proper dedicated public transit and a few high-rises to finish it off with. Either that or large tower clusters just barely outside the centre such as in Paris and Amsterdam. I think it's a decent solution, but maybe not the optimal one. It's difficult, really. Another problem naturally comes to the architecture itself, as your usual skyscrapers rarely reflect the culture of the place they're in.
