living in the city>living in the rural area

atleast if you want to succeed/have some social life/go to cinema kek

and Warsaw is pretty nice though commuting is pain in ass(spending more than 2 hours on commuting every day sucks), it's developing quite nicely recently too

but I visited Western European cities and Warsaw isn't quite there, commies fucked up too many things

Is that public transportation or car? That's how long it would take to go from one end of NYC to the other.

Of course not everyone in Warsaw spend so much time to get to work but some do. I guess NYC is better because you have an actual metro system and in Warsaw if you live by the metro station commuting is fine but if you don't it suck.

It's definitely colder there than in Poland, but because it's located by the sea and in the southermost Finland the winters are not that snowy nor extremely cold but it's windy.

Modern Finnish architecture is extremely dull...

>Finnish towns were not destructed by wars but by communist city planners.
Planners and bad architects ruined most English settlements, too. 50s/60s/70s. I guess by the 80s things started to improve. The planning was still mostly bad, but the suburbs being built were more and more often featuring traditional styles of architecture with a modern touch, and managed not to look like housing for prisoners, which is more than can be said for what came before.

Stastically, official Paris is the urban area and is much wider than the Grand Paris and the intra muros-core. (Grand Paris is roughly the sum of the 92 + 93 + 94 + 75 départements, and bits of 95 of 91).
Soon many powers of the old communes, including the old intra-muros 2 million inhabitants core, will be transfered to the Grand Paris, including urban planning, managment of the streets and tax levying.

architecture serves to us, not the opposite

with the current populations, and the sizes of cities it's far more efficient/economical/ecological to build skyscraper which can deliver housing, office units, retail space all of this in 1 fucking building

people don't want to drive hours to their jobs, highrise architecture can vastly cut the commuting time

I dont know how do you even imagine a large metropolis without highrises and skyscrapers

like really I dont fucking get your logic, you would prefer to commute 2 hours a day to your job, live in some shitty suburbs or to have everything necessary in one place and having a good connection to the city centre?

even in ancient or middle ages metropolies like Rome or Hangzhou they already were building multiple stories to get more space

I don't mind the size of the building, per se. I care what it looks like. If you build a city that looks like a prison, don't expect people to like it.

You don't need any more than 5 stories, anyway.
Building upwards is more of a bragging contest between architects, anyway. The scrapers going up in London tend to have a hard time selling space, IIRC.

Dude you pick extremes. You think there wasn't piece of shit architecture in the middle ages? No one bothered to preserve some trash though. Commieblocks were a mistake and I agree with that they wanted to deliver cheap housing to masses but the quality of this housing is just so bad.
>>52963553
>You don't need any more than 5 stories, anyway.
But you do. In ridiculously high density places like Hongkong where you are limited in terms of area you need very tall residental highrises - if you want to have a developed, populous city. In places like South Korea where you are not that limited but population density is still very high you need residental highrises aswell, not that tall but still. The same with Chinese megacities. Where do you want to fit all these 10 million cities? You want them to sprawl them infinitely? Or maybe just not to have cities at all because highrise architecture is disgusting after all? In Europe where population is not that high, where areas were quite developed since centuries and urbanization started earlier you have places with high density like Paris, London, Barcelona - there is a lot of traditional, very densely packed multi stories residentals there and it's pretty much working I think but still these cities build skyscrapers for offices because traditional buildings are not enough. Even in the US with their almost infinite space and sprawling suburbs and detached houses they erect tall skyscrapers in the cities' downtowns to deliver office space because how the hell you can fit it otherwise? Build multiple lowrise buildings which will take 10x more space? And for what reason? Large city without skyscrapers and highrises either wouldn't be large or wouldn't be really working like it's supposed to.

desu Atlantic Canada pretty much carries the same culture from Nova Scotia to PEI, to Newfoundland.

the main difference is that up until the 70's, St. John's was one of the world's largest navigational/trading harbours, which led to major growth, but since Canada fucked them over, the population stagnated.

the difference between most of Atlantic Canadian cities and St. John's is that St. John's is not just a harbour

I'm really starting to get tired of modern architecture. Here in Chicago they are destroying the early 20th century buildings with beautiful stone facades in favor of extremely ugly glass highrises with absolute shit parking garages below them which does absolute shit for the streetscape. There is more to a city than the skyline. The only reason people love NYC so much is because it's really the only city (alongside Chicago) to really do the skyscraper right (i.e. focusing on what it looks like from the ground as a pedestrian).

For Finland specifically, skyscrapers do not mesh with our geography or climate. The sun is at a low angle for most of the year, so tall buildings will put everything in a near-permanent shade. Helsinki in particular is windy, and skyscrapers would funnel the winds more which would make being outside unbearable, especially in winter.

As far as personal reasons go, I don't like light pollution or the of the steel/glass/concrete combo. The latter especially has a factory/prison aesthetic that doesn't feel appropriate for something meant for being lived in by normal people. Skyscrapers don't have just one symbolic dimension of "wow they're so high I'm gonna aim high too!" but they also create a looming, oppressive atmosphere.

The economic arguments for skyscrapers are flimsy because they are self-inflicted. Population growth and economic activity concentrating in a few cities aren't unsolvable problems, and tall buildings are just a bad bandaid.

I disagree. Only in extreme cases like HK is density a problem.

In NYC and the like, the solution is to simply grow the centre outwards. You don't need the external non-central boundaries to increase. If you look at a population density in NYC, it'd look something like graph 1. It should look like graph 2. This could be achieved by building mixed use cities, as used to be done before the car. Then you wouldn't need oversized buildings.

Worcester, Englel.

Not as impressive as other cities of its type, like Lincoln or York, and therefore is oft forgotten.

Sizergh Castle and Gardens, Cumbria

It annoys me when they call stately homes "castles". Germans do it all the time.
