>cities should only have short buildings = autism.
funny thing I never saw an inhabitant of city with skyscrapers complaining about them and wanting to have only short buildings
it's almost always Europeans and mostly inhabitants of small cities and villages
their "arguments" are so fucking ridiculous, like this brit last thread who was saying "just make Manhattan 3x larger" that I guess it's just pure jealousity
I actually like the mix of old and new buildings of Frankfurt.

Chicago is a shithole. Most skyscrapers in Chicago are empty and are there just for show (read: for the enjoyment of tourists). Vacant office space is a serious problem in Shitcago.

Commie-blocks are just cheaply built concrete towers with little to no details and more often than not built in large clusters, so yes, these are commies. Even by your definition they are commies. This for example could be Russia for all I knew, but it's in the middle of Seoul.
>be into engineering

So these buildings are commieblocks eh ? they are exact replicas of each other, and extremely nondescript. But they are situated in fucking Hong Kong and a flat costs millions of Dollars.

It's all about the architecture. Merihaka is a quite expensive neighborhood in Helsinki but it's architecture is still 100% commie.
>>53029505
Those obviously aren't simple or cheap, though. They are made with mixed materials and have variation in the facade, and even a more distinct shape and base. If we wanna talk about Hong Kong commies, then Kowloon as a whole is a good candidate.

I don't know, but "muh freedum" seems to be a recurring argument. I still can't believe they decided to build those suburbian sprawls in semi-arid climates, such a waste.
Though stupidity seems contagious. Individual houses (not buildings though, luckily) have to be built completely separated from each other now. This caused otherwise small and dense villages in France to start sprawling further out which is extremely wasteful in ressources and infrastructure. While older houses in the center of villages are being abandonned and left to rot rather than being revamped.

>>53032551
Wow, look at all those roads.
I think in the future, modernist cities won't have any sidewalks. You will leave your house, enter your car, drive on nice open roads with no pedestrians around, to a building with its own parking lot, and go to work or whatever at the building. Then when your day is done, you drive back home and spend all night watching television.
Modernist life in the 21st century.
Just big cities with big buildings and big roads and big parking lots and no cafes or bars or open riverfronts or anything. Just nice big driveable cities with no one walking around. Brilliant.
>>53028642
>When the fuck did high rise apartments start equating to commieblocks ?
there is not definition for commieblocks
some people call all high-rises, even these super luxury ones with gardens and shiet "commieblocks"
I personally use term "commieblocks" only in reference to these built in Eastern Europe in the times of Soviet Union/Eastern Bloc because they are very distinctive and they are the most crappy ones
Bodmin jail.
Lets be honest. Compared to some of the commieblocks which get build these days, this isn't so bad....

>Just big cities with big buildings and big roads and big parking lots and no cafes or bars or open riverfronts or anything.

There is a definisjon for commie-block though. The name just derives from the fact that they were most commonly built in communist nations, but the term is in no way limited to those. You'll find commies all over the world, and there is a clear gap between them and more up-class apartment blocks. Commies are just the cheapest and simplest of their kind. Pure cheap concrete with barely anything else, with no regards to looks, often built by the state, in clones, with the purpose of housing large quantities of people quickly and cheaply. It's just a name for those types of buildings, regardless of place or how pristine they might be. There are shitty commies and good commies, but a commie is a commie. In style these ones from Eastern Europe are no different from what you'll find in Asia or Western Europe. Personally I love commies, though, and I'd love to live in one. It's just that they are in fact their own thing.
>>53033658
>>53033686
calling buildings built in capitalist countries "commieblocks" is retarded though
Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
>>53033946
>>53033827
It really isn't, as that's the commonly accepted name for that style of construction. It can be built by anyone, but it's still what it is. Many things might have a specific country, region, era, etc. in its name, but it doesn't have to be limited to it.
>>53034026
>>53033006
That's already the case in Kuala Lumpur, I guess it must be the same in other "modern" cities. Had to enter my oh so modern skyscraper residence through the parking lot three meters away from the highway, you litteraly cannot walk or even bicycle anywhere, if you don't have a train station nearby or a car, you're screwed.
>>53034054
>It really isn't, as that's the commonly accepted name for that style of construction.
no it isn't
commonly accepted name is "highrise/residental tower/apartment block" etc
in poland we just call them blocks
why would you call them commieblocks instead of just blocks if they weren't build in a communist country
>>53034305
not sure if Kuala Lumpur is a good example
in Warsaw even in central area you can walk though it's crowded obviously
>>53034396
Because an apartment block can be something much better. The thought around the name probably went something like this:
"Hey, what do we call these bottom of the barrel apartment blocks that are reminiscent of communist era public housing?"
"Commie-blockâ„¢"
"GENIUS"
It's not a name to be taken 100% literally, but rather more mockingly in regard to those types of buildings.
>>53034539
>Because an apartment block can be something much better.
not for the masses anyway
good residental towers are pretty expensive and only the rich can afford them
>>53034452
Warsaw is a European city which has been there for quite some time. Kuala Lumpur litteraly sprung out of nothingness in the past 30 years, like a number of south asian cities, and some African cities. Some deal with pedestrians better than others, but always more poorly than "classical" urban designs.
>>53034924
In the west, where this term is most commonly used, commie-blocks were obsolete by the 80's and what followed after was really quite a different. Southern European condos too and newer style apartments are also quite different, while still cheap. You also have places like Japan that hardly even have commies. So it's good to have one term specifically for those.
>>53035156
yeah Kuala Lumpur may be some kind of urban failure, it grew from poor area in the time of economical boom and I don't think anyone cared how the city will work and look like
rapid urbanization is not easy to pull off and do it properly
>>53035348
and why this terms is used even regrading buildings which have nothing in common with original commieblocks?
I've seen people calling Singaporean luxury first class apartments "commieblocks"
it's just seems like another example of western contemptuous attitude towards everything which isn't western
Dubai, UAE
>>53036679
>>53036727
>>53036785
>>53036202
The "original commieblock" isn't something that even started in soviet countries, but it became most popular there, and when similar urbanization was attempted in Western Europe and the Americas, they named it this mockingly. It was during the cold war after all, so anything reminiscent of the soviets would get derogatory terms. It just stuck around, and became a more general term for these types of apartments no matter location. Both IRL and on internet forums like SSC. It doesn't really have much deeper ulterior motives to it nowadays, and I'm sorry it offends you.
>I've seen people calling Singaporean luxury first class apartments "commieblocks"
Then that's wrong, unless the exterior looked like your average bare-bones commie.
>>53036871
>It doesn't really have much deeper ulterior motives to it nowadays, and I'm sorry it offends you.
It doesn't offend me just I don't see a reason to call blocks not built in the commie countries as "commieblocks".

>>53040021
a lot of people from major cities would talk about how they would like to move to the rural area muh comfy muh nature or something but the truth is living in a major city > living anywhere else
of course you are getting tired of big city, all these crowds etc, like all my family in Warsaw, but they wouldn't move out of it like ever, they just have very calm and comfy place in Mazuria at some lake and they go for holidays there
living in rural area/non-major city sucks - imagine what are you supposed to do to get a good, higher education - you need to move out anyway, hundreds of kilometers away so what's the purpose in the first place
imagine having you wanting to have some good job - you will most probably need to move to some major city...
