So over in /beg/ the first that gets pounded in everyone heads is to quit symbol drawing, yet here all people do is symbol draw. Literally what? I thought symbol drawing was a bad thing.

"Symbol drawing" is sort of ambiguous, but what they really mean is there's a difference between symbol drawing like a noob where your symbols reflect a poor understanding of structure and function, and symbol drawing as shorthand where you've already studied the fundamentals and can break the rules stylistically. Nothing wrong with the latter.
>>
>>2914343
There's a difference between beginner symbols and stylized symbols that reflect knowledge of fundamentals.

I stopped drinking last year too, and things really began to accelerate because of that. Thanks for the compliment.
>>
>>2914343
The truth is just about everything we do is symbol drawing, even atelier figure studies. What people mean when they say 'you're symbol drawing' is build up your visual library with information that better aligns to a realistic structure; which isn't wrong because even stylization proceeds from realism

there's nothing that shows any effort was put in at all. you made the most simplistic decision possible. which is a skill in and of itself.
but the thing that ruins it is the palette. change the color of the clothes to something more vibrant. Nobody with that skin color and hair color would wear clothes that exact color because it's the palette equivalent of vomit in culinary. it doesn't contrast, it just clashes.

All it takes is just a better choice of palette and you could easily make something pleasant to look at.

Change the color of the clothes.

Makes me feel better than what I usually get!

I like what you have so far. It captures the essence of cute in perhaps a klutzy way. I'm not too sure because it's difficult to read what you've written if it's of importance.
>>

Ah, it says "Cyberpunk? I hate amputees though...". I write notes sometimes, just to not lose my train of thought. I was thinking of prosthetic limbs.

Anyway, if you'd like a stricter critique, I could mention that her hips are too wide with that leg spread. Among other things, your main problem seems to be anatomy. Not to repeat myself or others, though. You can make it with work, I'm sure!

Sorry for the delay, my signal made it hard to load. Fantastic, solid work. I'm envious. I was eyeing the leg to upper body ratio out of concern, but I think it folds out properly, so no anatomy issues I can see. I'm wondering about the punk elf's lighting compared to the monster, though.

I've been hopelessly addicted to pure black and white. But truly, is black not the deepest dark and white not the most brilliant light? Colors are USELESS.

The arm needs to come down or be at a different angle. Its broken up there. The hand looks super flat too, you should push the gesture and see if you can get more dynamism out of it.
>>
>>2916212

Yeah, that was bugging me. I actually redrew it once and then realized it was still going to be fucked up. Trying to iron out the wrinkles in the process.

What I should have done is drawn the whole figure small first and then blow it up off frame instead of sketching it full size. I basically guessed where the arm should go.

I did have a different pose in mind but chickened out. The hand was supposed to be extended towards the viewer. But I'd have to turn to the whole body for that, which would be an entirely separate drawing.

As for the arm.. it... should be closer to his head, right?

A lot of the folds you put in your clothing are a similar sweep down from the edges, that kind of flattens the clothing, especially in the skirt.
Also with a pose like that, assuming shes angry and ready to fight a cunt, if its a static strong pose add a sense of action through hair and clothing as well as overlap of her body parts. Another thing I'd recommend is to not use an excessive amount of lines with anime eyes and hair, simpler is better and avoid repeating shapes too often like you have in her fringe.

As a beginner to art you should avoid anime like the fucking plague, it can seriously warp how you learn to draw. You need to learn the fundamentals first before messing around with hyper stylization.

What? there are some in this very thread

There are plenty of people that start drawing with cartoons and anime and never bother with fundies
>>
>>2916488
I'd say you understand the fundamentals when you've taught yourself to draw what you see and not what you know, you understand shading, you can build figures, you know perspective rules, and then when you start posting the concrit moves from how the structure of your drawing is off to more nitpicky shit like
'Oh this is really cool but her foot is kinda small'
>>
>>2916489
Unless you already have a strong basis in art anime -is- symbol drawing, you see this shit with dA fags all the time. They see the nose as a little dot, the head is a circle with a triangle attached, hair is just a bunch of spikes, the eyes are circles, ten bucks says the arms are just noodles with the hands behind the fucking back. In general anime is a lazy as fuck for beginners. Obviously some people can learn to draw anime first and be fine, but compared with all the other people who suck it's better to not base your learning off anime

It is an abstraction, not a symbol you are suggesting form in a very very simple and subtle manner that is abstract.

>They see the nose as a little dot, the head is a circle with a triangle attached, hair is just a bunch of spikes, the eyes are circles

Well, that is indeed how noobies and you think about it. That however doesn't have anything to do with anime in general.
>>
>>2916495
Isn't all anime, and maybe stylization symbol drawing? You are purposely not drawing reality, you're drawing a simplified version of it. Sure you need a grasp on form, anatomy, and perspective to draw good anime. But you never draw what you see, that's the whole point, it's just a representation of reality.
So is all symbol drawing bad? Or is it only bad when the artist doesn't have a firm grasp on fundamentals? I symbol drawing just a meme, and the only thing that actually matters learning fundamentals?
>>
>>2916499
You'r probably not a native speaker because you misunderstood his post. He said that without fundamentals, because of a lack in experience, the people who start with anime see only symbols, because they don't know the difference between symbols and stylization. That's why he is saying that you need to some fundamentals otherwise you will be doing it wrong.
>>
>>2916516
Symboldrawing is not a meme. That is fore sure
>>
>>2916521
because I didn't read his post, and my point still stands.
>>
>>2916514
Why are you all interpreting his post as if he sees it the same way? All he is saying is that if you do not understand fundamentals you see anime as symbol drawing instead of an abstraction. He seems to know that anime is an abstract way to portrait reality but that beginners without experience get that wrong.
>>
>>2916532
Why are you arguing with him then? Are you against the fact that you need some form of fundamentals or your art will most likely be shit if you start with anime, or are you just attacking him because you are one of the noodle arm, symbol drawing dA fags?

kek. Anime is simplified realism with slightly stylized eyes and facial features. I'm seriously not sure if retards like you have actually ever seen anime before or if your opinion is based completely on hearsay and images drawn by 14 year olds on deviantart.

Keep spinning that wheel, but no matter how fast you run you're not going anywhere. Keep believing whatever you want to believe.
>>
>>2916539
If you don't understand the fundamentals, everything you do will be symbol drawing. There are just as many, if not more examples of badly drawn realism attempts where the artist falls back to symbol drawing, yet you don't see anyone go "hurr stop drawing realism until you understand your fundamentals".
>>
>>2916552

It's parroted replies with some basis of truth behind it, it's the space that trolls love to occupy.
>>
>>2916552
>yet you don't see anyone go "hurr stop drawing realism until you understand your fundamentals".

That is because drawing from life and mimicking it to the point of realism are part of fundamentals.
>>
>>2916552
And if you look to anime to try and cure your symbol drawing you will have a bad time. The point is, learn your fundamentals, you learn your fundamentals based on realism, so dont draw anime before you know your fundamentals or at least dont symbol draw anymore.

Not really, I see so many people on this board who do nothing but wannabe realism and have no clue about depicting proper form and volume. They just replace one form of symbol drawing with a slightly more sophisticated form of symbol drawing but their work still looks like shit and clearly lacks fundamentals.
>>
>>2916570
The people who draw anime without knowing fundamentals do not draw any challenging perspective studies, they draw shitty bloated heads with shitty caved faces and even worse hair without ANY perspective whatsoever. They most likely dont add feed or even whole legs and hide the hands behind the back. Doing that is not part of fundamentals.
>>
>>2916572
So gesture, perspective and construction is not part of the fundamentals, only fully rendered realistic figures are. Good to know.
>>
>>2916574
Grinding and studying realism is part of what makes you a better artist. You don't draw perfect realism in a week if you started at square zero.
>>
>>2916577
Yeah and why do you pretend that is somehow the fault of anime? The people who draw shitty, flat "realism" portraits of celebrities do not draw any challenging perspective studies either, yet I don't see you blame realism for it. This whole argument is fucking retarded.

If you are looking to anime to draw faces well, and you are a beginner, then you wont improve much, because for a beginner seeing very subtle hints at form and volume which is sometimes indicated only by line wheight is impossible. Seeing form in something real however is a lot easier, even more so if you have a real life model and not only a photo.
Anime is worse for a beginner, and wont lead anywhere without proper guidance. Ofcourse there are sometimes people who have a good grasp of form without ever learning fundamentals who get further when starting with anime than others. For the most though, starting with anime is worse than starting with realism.
>>2916601
We are not talking about people who do hard perspective studies about the body with its limbs. And if you try to do perspective drawings with anime as reference you wont get very far either. Because in anime for a beginner, there is far more tolerance on what looks right and what looks wrong. For a beginner pic related probably looks okay because beginner see some kind of abstraction in anime which they dont properly understand. However, looking at real life there is no abstraction so even a noob sees if something is wrong, if it doesnt look real then its wrong and they can study more.

It's looking cute, so far, but watch the flattening of the form with the corset lacing and the stitch on her arm. They should be wrapping around her waist and fore arm, but they're just straight lines.

Also, I feel like the heart's vessels are too prominent. Maybe it's because I'm mostly familiar with menhera art on clothing, where details are more simplified because of the printing process, but removing detail on the heart would work better.

I'm somewhat new to painting myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but if I had to take a stab at improving it, I would do something about those reds and some of those purples. They're very bright and saturated especially since some of them are in shadow, tone them down for more contrast. Keep the eye the same though, might be a good color accent
>>
>>2917234
1. pick a light temperature and stick to it (cool=leaning towards blue, warm=leaning towards orange). if light is cool, shadows are warm. if light is warm, shadows are cool. be consistent with this.
2. pick which will be more saturated, light or shadow. if light side is saturated, shadows are desaturated (more grays). if shadows are more saturated, lights are desaturated. be consistent with this.

it looks like your lights and shadows are both very saturated, so tone down one of them. shadows on the face are warm, but shadows in the hair and hands are cool. change one or the other.

i'm not very good at explaining, but i hope this helps. i like how you drew the eye btw.

So I've been learning how to draw girls the wrong way for around...4 years (skipping fundamentals, and going straight for sexy lineart, and then digital color over). Got stonewalled out of HF because my anatomy was bad, and only a couple people REALLY like my art.

After sketching/erasing over and over and feeling like I'm not actually getting better, I felt like I needed some help.

There is a whole lot of shit I get wrong, but have no idea how to fix it, and I feel like DLing Loomis and filling a notebook with doodles of hands, legs, bodies and arms MIGHT help, but I'm really unsure.

Here's an example of something I'm actually trying on.

Did the confident line stuff as directed from my last visit here, and changed a pose I was most familiar with (I've drawn this pose like fifty different times so it's one that I cringed at least). However I keep fixating on everything I screwed up and getting stuck in the Draw + Ctrl Z phase.

Thanks. I tried to fix the errors. What's really bothering me the more I look at this, is the under skirt where the tentacles are coming out from. How can I fix it??
>>
>>2918189
Maybe I should have mentioned it earlier, but the perspective is wrong as far as I can tell. Though the only part that sticks out to me is her shoulder and collar bone area.
The whole picture looks like our eyes are a little bit higher than her head, but her shoulders and collar bone area looks like its on eye level. Same goes for the heart.
That's my observation anyways.

It's a standard paper size. Like, real paper. The flat physical stuff made usually out of wood or rag pulp. Translated to digital by choosing a DPI and multiplying the dimensions by that to get a dot (pixel) count.
>>
>>2917922
yeah, ill try and fix that

I'm sorry to bring attention to this like this but any critiques you could lob my way? I don't usually color my stuff so I usually have half an idea what I'm even doing

While you still have line art there's only so far you can go with rendering.
She looks like she would be quite shiny. So more contrast?
Bounce light?
Give your self a clear light source and a darker background to help make her lighting clearer
Super cute though
>>
>>2917502
Check out CtrlPaint's guide on how to do rendering if you haven't already
https://www.ctrlpaint.com/videos/brush-technique-blending
You can cheat a bit from time to time with a softer brush but don't overuse it

Stop embarrassing yourself, obviously the reference is close enough that he can use the form to correct his drawing, he doesnt need to see panties in order to draw panties and your image is in a completely different pose than the character in his drawing.
Don't give bad advice to beginners just so you can pretend to be knowledgeable.

Wow. I can't believe you said that? You know I have PTSD right? It's true, I don't lie. Everytime I see it, I let a sigh. And before you ask, i cant fix it with the likes of a flask. I must say I'm ashamed, but what caused it is really quite tame.

You see, ever since 5 and since then the rest of my life, ive kept cutting myself with my knives. Cutting onions or demons, theres no difference. So as for your inference that i need to spend time on the field, id ask you to yield. I've even watched my favorite anime ( Naruto) to try to calm down my urges but it really doesnt help.

Anyway, thanks for listening

>>
>>2918642
Why the hell are so many of these assholes "PTSD artists"? We all know it's bullshit. Total and complete bullshit. Your refusal to grow the fuck up and focus on someone other than yourself is demented to everyone around you. I am sick and tired of hearing people say “this is just how I am, I can’t change it”. Bullshit. You know what you are? Selfish. “I need to stop having flashbacks and nightmares about war”. Bullshit. You are too fucking immature and selfish to settle down and take responsibility for your relationship. How the fuck is it possible that someone would risk destroying their career with the peace they profess to love more than they ever thought possible because they “can't stop having anxiety attacks”? How is it possible that they would risk homelessness because they “need to relive the wars”? How could someone risk their child losing a parental figure because they “need to relive the violence and draw”? How could someone risk putting their child at risk of being homeless because of their “need to relive the horrors of combat”? How is it even possible?

Be careful on your anatomy. I get that she's wearing a corset, but her head is waaaay to big for that body and her neck is about as thick as her waist. I'd make her body bigger or her head and neck smaller and thinner. Her hands are also too small, so you'll want to resize those as well. The other anon is also right in that the perspective is off. There's a disconnect from the upper body (top down) to the lower body (straight on.).

Your skirt has multiple issues. The draping is wrong, and its especially wrong if its supposed to be a pleated skirt. Look at just general references of skirts, even other drawings. (there should be tons, its a pretty basic skirt design). Also, be careful because her "top" skirt just cuts off- you made it look like it only covers her front, like an apron.

Also, and this is more personal preference, its a bit busy and corsets are not really a part of menhera (yes menhera, not manhera. ) fashion. Its looking more cosplay/ero lolita than menhera. I'd choose maybe three of your themes tops (tentacles, smoking, nurse, cuts, tentacles, heart, spiked collar, eyepatch, ect.) and work with those, because right now its really busy. I say this particular stuff as someone that is decently popular in the menhera art community right now. Take some of these ideas and split it into 2 or 3 different drawings instead of an all in one.

Good luck!

I wanted to be a vocaloid producer and started researching drawing in order to make artwork for my future song videos. Ironically drawing and learning japanese clicked on me much more than music production to the point I pursue drawing/painting this bad.

I still dream about producing and I've actually managed to finish some songs accompanied with my own artwork and lyrics but I'm very far from making anything decent. Who knows maybe someday someone will be willing to exchange/teach me music production or I might get fired and have some time to learn on my own and I will be finally able to make the vocaloid music I want to listen,

No joke, I thought the person on the far right was a girl, you seriously need to work on different face types as your samefacing is clearly holding you back. You also need to work on expressions in general, again, due to same sameface problems.

>>2919259
Better redline, although that guy's arm is fucked. Just saying. However I like where your composition is going (making sure the other two girl's faces aren't being focused on, as so the red head can be the focal point), but the one thing I'd point out is how you handled the redhead. If Firez goes with yours, he has to go for a character that's more mature about the situation while if he sticks with his original pose, he portrays a more childish expression towards the situation. Looking down usually portrays childishness while looking up is a sign of a adult's response.

Ultimately I'd go with yours in general, but something wants Firez first one for the redhead. Just a preference I guess.
