Because we should not have to make new threads or post in draw threads with our fundamental exercises.
Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up, make someone proud.

AVOID asking unrelated questions, there is a question thread for that.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

#1)
>screenshot the image and post that instead (I recommend ShareX)

#2)
>change camera capture settings to something smaller

#3)
>send to computer and resize in MSPaint

>Thread study: Try to draw/paint the opening or any other following images.
Feel free to post your original works as well if you're trash.

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is a bit sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve, but are left directionless.

KY_head.jpg

Another newbie here. It has been a month since I started drawing (passionately, I mean). For some reason or another, the characters I draw "from head" turn out looking manlier or bigger boned than they should be, even if I don't fuck up the anatomy. Heads and faces are my biggest weakness; the only angle I can draw reliably is a direct back view. Mirroring the drawings doesn't really help me that often; in some cases, they end up looking even better to me.

Anyway, here I tried my best to make the woman look as feminine and lovely as possible, yet I still am not satisfied. I'd like some advice on how to fix the shapes so that the woman would be satisfyingly feminine and, preferably, smiling seductively (although the current sad look is fine too). Or are the shapes feminine already, and the only thing I need to do is to replace the hard lines with shading?

(Her head is turned about 4/5 of the way to her shoulder and tilted slightly upwards.)

Wouldn't mind comments about neck and ear shape/positions too.
>>
>>2856435
Study from references. Even artists that are the best at drawing from imagination draw from reference, it's just that they've drawn from so many references that it builds up as a repository in their minds without needing the picture. Also, don't color.
>>
>>2856440
Everything was good until the end. Do color, don't be some faggot who restricts themselves. I see tens of beginners leave every week because all they do is boring portraits or gestures.
>>
>>2856444
All I'm saying is that if you want to get a good idea of how light works, don't start with color. Obviously the point of everything we do is to have fun/find satisfaction, but color can complicate things when an artist is a beginner. Gray-scale is best for getting a feel for it. Of course, I can't stop him from doing whatever the fuck he wants. It's just a suggestion.
>>
>>2856450
Your words are basically the words of God, of course you can stop him. Anyways, use color if you want, it's not like you're too retarded to know that a color should be lighter or darker depending on where the light source is coming from.

As someone who wants to just start drawing now, and eventually wants to draw figures and scenery from imagination, what's the best thing for me to start doing right now? I haven't drawn anything since I was like 10.

Should one start drawing figures from references, or learn the anatomy first?
>>
>>2856503
Step 1: Read the Sticky, read all the books in the sticky and do the exercises. (you can find PDFs of all the books through a simple google search)

After you've done that, you'll be able to draw reasonably well figures from imagination, and after that it's just practicing consistently.
>>
>>2856503
Do you do traditional or digital? Can you post some of your drawings? That way we can gauge your level and help you better. Also tell us what kind of figures and scenery you want to do. A certain style? Cartoon? Disney? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Realistic?

I'm finding it very hard to copy the exact angles I see, and now the women looks masculine for this reason.
>>
>>2856440
A good advice, but... not quite the kind I was hoping for.
Also, why don't color? It's not the first time I'm hearing that, but coloring is about the only aspect of painting I'm doing well at (for a beginner), evidenced by the responses I receive when I color someone else's work or don't fuck up my own with bad anatomy. (Or is that enough of a reason and I should focus on improving the skills I suck at?) Naturally, the picture I posted has a long way to be finished.

>Doing really well with drawing lately so I try drawing a mirror image of a face like that activity with the vase
>Brain explodes, drawing devolves into symbol drawing and I can't see the shapes of the face for the life of me

Why can't my brain process this?
>>
>>2856855
Because drawing a mirror image of something is a completely new thing. It's hard. It's why I hate that we have to learn everything twice. Learn how to draw a hand? Great, now you have to do it for the other side.
>>
>>2856831

Look at the relatinship between how much the nose and the chin stick out, the nose should be more outside the contours than the chin, unlike you have done it. The jaw is also too straight compared to reference, which is more angle upwards. I believe placing the ear slightly higher will also help with the jaw line.

You took a class to learn this?

I'm glad that I'm too poor for classes.
>>
>>2856906
The funny thing is, I learned jack shit from the class and what you see there is nearly entirely self taught. The class did not go over anything useful at all like anatomy, it was literally just "oh hurr durr this how you use a program" explained the use of text fonts and the color theory class was complete shit, all stuff I learned in third fucking grade. Needless to say I quit out of it four months in before it wasted more of my time and money.

It wasn't that noticeable in the sketch, but her neck seems overly long and incorrectly placed now. That's because you drew her from a different angle and with a shorter face than in the picture. With the current angle, the left side of the trapezius should be visible, see the green line.

Not sure if I am correct on this as I'm just going off instinct, but the left side of her torso looks too elongated, and her right elbow looks weird, but I like your linework.

what the fug, my respect for capable artists just skyrocketed.

started getting into drawing 9 days ago with one of the mastering manga books and rest assured, the heads were easy enough so i got the hang of them quickly. so i was feeling confident enough and tried to do the body today, and even though this is still with the guiding of the book, it felt like my brain was going to explode.. and this just a simplified figure and a easy pose. i just could not do the feet, they always ended up looking like flippers.

can't even imagine how i would ever go about getting this right in a way more complicated pose.
>>
>>2857609
Wow, what book is this? This is better than what most beginners can even do.

But about the complicated pose thing. It just takes practice. No, I'm kidding. All you have to do is attempt them with a reference and now the mind will begin to understand it slowly. Magic. I'm keeping an eye on you.

don't praise me too hard m8 (tho it is appreciated :3), this is literally the pose from the book recreated with a few tiny differences. in the end i couldn't even do the feet.

Ok so I know there's a lot I should be practicing before I get into coloring and that my drawings are generic. But besides that, any advice on my coloring? Not finished obviously but I followed some coloring tutorials and did the left girl's clothes/hair and the lighting looks off. Do I need to use less opacity when shading? Sharper light/dark edges? Maybe the tutorials I followed were for more realistic styles.

Hey guys, just doing this digital shape study. I got it from a ref photo since I don't yet have my own 3d shapes. I will get some though, but for now I'm studying with this.

Anyway, any tips on how to blend and make it neat? I'm using a normal brush at 40% opacity to try to blend the shades but its coming out looking very smudged. Also any other critiques?

And does anyone have links to reference photos for shapes? Thanks.

Movie stills is probably the best way to learn composition skills. It can also help with learning color and values especially with respect to composition and how to lead the viewer's eye to the interesting parts of a scene.

So long as you're actually studying it and not just copying random scenes you'll go places. You'll need to practice all the other shit too, but this is useful.

Somehow, she turned out ugly. Ugly as in "old slut, drug addict, served ten years in female prison". I think it's the expression and sharp lines instead of soft shading. By expression I mean that characteristic look of disinterest and contempt in her mouth and eyes. If you actually tried to copy the expression, then be careful with your lines. A couple of differently drawn lines can change the look dramatically, and the more lines a face has, the older it looks.

In what sense? You just don't like the sketch of the new additions or just the form itself? What can I do to improve it?

don't draw gestures with stick figures or couple of ovals, do, ehh, a bundle of spaghetti at least, cooked ofc
imagine as if you need to find the common denominator of a leg, for example, so you cut out all the bumps and draw an ehhh spaghetti.
gesture is, basically, a proper, natural way of connecting masses. and obviously you can't properly place, for example, the ribcage in relation to the pelvis based on a single line, you need a "river"
you can try pick any noob drawing and trace the gesture, it's not gonna be very pretty

I think some of these are actually pretty good, since i can actually tell what pose you were trying to do.
yet the Construction is really lacking.

Alright, I think I understand what you mean. I'll give it a few more tries and see if I can extremely simplify the pose.

>>2859250
>Construction is really lacking.

I have zero idea of anatomy, I am following Vilppu's book that I started today and it seems I gotta start with gesture before anything so I am grinding that.
>>
>>2859202
Lovely, it's a simple, memorable design, but I have some questions -

What does he eat?
His teeth are too small for a carnivore, too sharp for a herbivore. Perhaps an insect-eater? But then what about the tongue, shouldn't it be adapted for that somehow?
It seems to be adapted for speaking, but does he speak? His static eyebrows and lack of muscles able to show emotion suggests he's not a sapient creature, is that so?

As a concept designer, those are the questions you'll be payed to answer with your drawings. You'll be payed for design solutions, not pretty drawings.

so if i wanna go into figure drawing from imagination, would this be a good sort of plan to follow

- first up my mechanical skills through the countless exercises that exist
- get the basics of perspective down (1 & 2 Point perspective), being able to draw all the basic shapes in these
- draw stuff from life
- play more with shapes, trying to fuse them, subtract them etc
- get into gesture drawing and the basics of construction
- anatomy
>>
>>2859257
oh yeah and i'll probably wanna learn some basic shading. shit's gonna get complicated with only lines yo, or should i focus on shading after all of the other stuff
>>
>>2859250
>>2859253
>yet the Construction is really lacking.

I actually just realized what you mean by that, and I can see how my excuse about not knowing anatomy doesn't make any sense. I am going to try to work on that too now.

it lives in the slumbs of large cities, and it usually eats whatever it can get its hands on. canned food, thrown away microwave dishes and sometimes a rat if it is lucky enough.

it does have a very limited problem solving ability, but it is by no means intelligent. think of it as a small child or a cat.

they don't really form much of a threat, but are viewed more as a hindrance by the people that live in the city. they are easily scared away by loud noises or bright lights
>>
>>2859255

Wow, I never would have thought of that, but it seems obvious when you point it out! It's interesting to see the background thought put into character design.
>>
>>2859233
Really? I tried to do gestures like this and I was told not to just draw contours like the image.

>>
>>2859278
at least you resized
also did you smudge? it looks so a bit, but it could just be the photo. anyway if you did, don't
you seem on a good path otherwise, just practice more
>>
>>2859292
Date I finished the drawing, I do that for all my drawings to keep track of my progress.
>>
>>2859296

Ok, I will not smudge anymore. I did smudge on her left cheek and forehead, but no where else (intentionally).

So I can learn, why should I not smudge, I'm doing a first year course, which so far is literally just photo study after photo study with no instruction of how/which tools or why. The instructor did tell us to smudge around with our fingers or stumps however.
>>
>>2859088
No it isn't you idiot. Too used to anime? Weebs don't have a sense of depth when it comes to faces. Something they share with autists.
>>
>>2859304
your instructor sounds honestly shit, if he doesn't really explain anything and just expects you to turn in works
i'd say smudging slows down your learning proccess, and it also looks unprofesional and messy. all of my drawing instructors always adviced us not to do it.
you seem to do good on shading with the pencil too, so i just don't see a reason for you to smudge.
>>
>>2856630

That makes a lot of sense, something about the cheek to me felt weird after I smudged it, like it didn't fit in with the rest of the image. Well thank you for the crit and knowledge. It helps a lot to know I'm moving forward, even if at slow pace.
>>
>>2859353

>>
>>2859378
Oh yeah that makes more sense. Thanks
>>
>>2857402
R-ref?
I need it for studies.
>>
>>2859257
Basically yes.

For perspective, it's just all about understanding the basics. You don't have to go too far with it.

Draw stuff from life actually incorporates 3 skills. One is observational skill, your ability to draw what you see, not what you think you see. The other is understanding values, lighting, and shading. So basically how light hits an object and how it produces different values on each surface plane to make it look 3d. Lastly is basic understanding of perspective.

If you master that part, moving into figure drawing will be easier than if you have no experience with that. The reason is because figure drawing really breaks down to drawing basic forms. A head is just a sphere with combinations of other shapes. A torso is a cube. Arms are cylinders. etc. Forget about drawing only outlines. Start right away with 3d.

Basic shading is a must in this case because it will be what brings volume to all your drawings. You have to be able to shade all the values properly and neatly. Messy shading will cover up your mistakes or make them look worse.

Anatomy will come later, once you actually begin drawing figures. And drawing from imagination will be the last part.

>>2859278
Don't rush. Get into the habit of drawing cleanly.
