When the subject of raiding comes up people think of vikings and nomad peoples, but my question is, did civilized nations raid in the past?

Think of Rome, Ancient Greece, The Byzantines, Feudal lords, jap daimyos, the dynasties of China, the caliphs etc.

Would states with powerful military refrain from raiding due to cultural/religious reasons? It seems like the most practical thing to do, using your expensive army to steal from your neighbors and coastal cities rather than paying solders wages so they can get drunk and patrol the peaceful countryside.

One of the methods the Greeks used to found colonies is sailing up and down the area they wished to colonize, then they'd find a nice small settlement something cozy and manageable with few defences as it was populated by simple happy folk. Then they would row up to it as quiet as possible so as not to dusturb its tired inhabitants. Then they would fucking murder every single man in the settlement and rape all the women, sell those too old or young into slavery or use them as gifts for local strongmen and keep the rest as rape wives.

And thats how Magna Graecia got started.
>>
>>2928540
That's colonization, or conquest, I'm asking about them going to some settlement, taking the resources and then returning to their homeland with plunder.

Romans did on occasion do raiding on their neighbouring tribes just to keep them on wary going over to raid roman towns, and if the tribes did do raid on roman town or fort the roman legions and auxillia would do counter-raid just to punish them.

Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom. To be wise is to be a sage. At what point in the study of philosophy does one become a sage? When does one go from the praxis of doubt to the theoria of Truth?

>Philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom.

NO; PHILOSOPHY IS AFFINITY WITH WISDOM.

>To be wise is to be a sage.

NO; TO BE A SAGE ENTAILS BEING WISE, BUT NOT ALL WISE PERSONS ARE SAGES.

>At what point in the study of philosophy does one become a sage?

ONE DOES NOT BECOME A SAGE BY STUDYING PHILOSOPHY, NOR DO SAGES STUDY PHILOSOPHY AS A NECESSITY.

>When does one go from the praxis of doubt to the theoria of Truth?

PRACTICE, AND THEORY, ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE, BUT COMPLEMENTARY AND CONCURRENT.

I dunno about the morality part. Of course from any outside perspectives that could be said but no one ever did something because they thought it was the wrong thing to do, so a moral or at least objectively moral cause is needed. That doesn't mean from any other view it could be perceived as immoral though, because that's how morality works.

How can I learn about the Hundred Years' War? Any good books or online resources?

Jonathan Sumption's been doing a massive narrative history about the Hundred Years' War for a long time now. Volume 4 (which goes up to the death of Henry V I believe) just came out not too long ago. They're pretty hefty books (first two volumes look to be around 600+ pages, 3 and 4 approaching 900-1000 pages each) too. I've been meaning to try and pick them up for a long time now, just haven't had the extra money and I don't particularly care for reading books on a computer or tablet.

Because empires are usually based around a single capital city, the rulers are usually too stupid to figure out federations which are inherently more stable (because if one city suffers from bad administration, the others can pick up the slack until fixes are made). This is why America is so powerful, because America's administration and society is distributed across 50 cities not one.

Christians are idiots who can't even read their own holy texts. They make ludicrous claims like "Jesus was the Messiah" despite the fact that the four things the Messiah was prophesied to do, Jesus totally and abjectly failed at, while the prophecies that Christians claim Jesus fulfilled where either not about the Messiah at all, or weren't prophetic at all.

>loses a war
>decides the empire just doesn't exist anymore

Why the fuck was that allowed? Especially in a polity like the HRE where Emperor had such little power over his """"subjects""""? The HRE wasn't really a country, but it kind of was, and the leader just decided one day, ''eh fuck it, no more Roman Empire" and there was seemingly no resistance to the dissolution of this institution that had existed for so long. Why?

How did the countries of Europe during the Cold War have any hope of maintaining sovereignty in the event of being invaded by a juggernaut like the USA or USSR? Manpower and logistics alone make it seem as though it'd be a futile endeavor.

The didn't. Most of the countries of Europe were firmly anchored to either America or the Soviet Union.

You figure Vietnam, Afghanistan and North Korea maintained a sort of defiant sovereignty. I see no reason why France, Italy or Rumania couldn't have done the same thing.

Battle_of_crecy_froissart.jpg
386KB, 1200x1054px
In 1346, the Battle of Crécy took place between English and French troops.
Among the French ranks were a couple thousand Genoese crossbowmen, mercenaries known for their proficiency with crossbows.
In the lead up to the battle itself, the Genoese had some troubles. They had to march for quite some length and had left all their pavises behind. Not only that, but a rainstorm suddenly broke out.
At this point, I start having some issues with the story.
The English longbowmen de-strung their bows. This isn't really practical to do on a crossbow, so the Genoese left theirs on.
They advanced into firing range of their crossbows. However, as they fired, they found that they were very ineffective.
The archers shot in retaliation and yadda yadda the English won the battle and the crossbow's use declined for a while.
Was it really the rain that affected their performance? The Genoese had been around for nearly 2 centuries by then, surely they had found bad weather before. What did they do those other times? Did they just not fight? They probably waxed their strings too (with tallow, resin or beeswax?), wouldn't that prevent rain damage?
What am I missing here?

such large scale battles were rare and they fought around the mediterranean
>>
I believe this is one of the *in* topics amongst medieval military historians at the moment. They were professional mercenaries and would have known rain would have affected their bows and how to protect them. I don't think anyone REALLY knows what happened.
>>
>>2926832
>They were professional mercenaries
While some were probably hardened veterans, I think most of them would have been young merchant marines and militiamen, and if not all then some might have made these sorts of mistakes. Plus, the mistake could have happened with the baggage train despite the best efforts of the Genoese.
