I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

>Perhaps the main difference between Gentoo and SourceMage is the ease of use and installation, which is faster because of the project's emphasis on speed
>It's mainly targeted at Linux From Scratch users bored from the process of maintaining their systems manually, and will look somewhat familiar for Debian users, as its package manager shares some concepts with Apt, but is far more flexible. Also, SourceMage has a Social Contract similar to the Debian Social Contract.

Mail me at "[email protected]" if you have any questions.

Sadly, a kernel by itself gets you nowhere. To get a working system you
need a shell, compilers, a library etc. These are separate parts and may
be under a stricter (or even looser) copyright. Most of the tools used
with linux are GNU software and are under the GNU copyleft. These tools
aren't in the distribution - ask me (or GNU) for more info.

Please avoid using the term "photoshop" as a verb, meaning any kind of photo manipulation or image editing in general. Photoshop is simply the name of one particular image editing program, which should be avoided since it is proprietary. There are plenty of free programs for editing images, such as the GIMP.

Manjaro is fine. Play with it, experiment. It should prepare you for arch if you try to do as much in the terminal as you can. Once you're feeling good about the terminal, try installing arch in a vm as a test. If that goes well, go for arch.

I've finally decided to install Ubuntu 16.04 on my laptop. It goes beyond the scope of what it was meant to replace and does not follow the unix way. If it was a init system replacing an init system people would probably be taking it better. However, it is an init system a cron replacement a session manager a dbus replacement and a udev replacement, among other things.

In short, it's emacs. A low level, highest privilege emacs.

I actually want to get to the bottom of why fedoras networking works on my computer but not a single debian (and by extension ubuntu) derivative will work no matter what i try. is there some sort of default programme for networking maybe? the only clues i have to go on is debian says the dhcp server is slow or not setup when trying to connect and all gui trials for connecting to wifi result in it asking for authentication (the password) again. Would this mean arch or some other non debian/buntu systems would also work/ not work? what is it that makes fedora seemingly special?

>>
>>60548500
Be aware that usernames are an abstraction and what the system actually uses are user numerical IDs, and the way these IDs are assigned is not completely uniform. It may happen, for example, that on your first distro your user was ID 1000, then you change distros, create a user with the same name and get ID 500 instead. Your files will not belong to you then.

It's easy to fix - either chown your files, or change your user's numerical ID. It's just something you should remember - if your first login fails with a bunch of errors about not being able to read or write some file, this may be the cause.

>asking this here because the phone generals seem more interested in hardware
My S5 is in need of a wipe soon, so I decided to tinker around with a custom OS. I am looking for something lightweight, but that I can still have set up with the jewgle botnet (i am a slave to the calendar/reminders, and don't feel like switching just yet.)

My main goal is simply to leave the default OS for something that I can tinker with as a past time, but I fear losing the services I've come to rely on.

Is there a distro that I can look into or should I just stick with the Cyanogen one or whatever is the go-to? I'm not really interested in "features" outside of ricing and botnet support. I am probably going to switch to a different phone in a month or so, so longevity isn't too important.

Also, I read the wiki but it isn't too helpful in deciding what ROM to go with. Figured I'd get some opinions before I dive in.

you must disable the disk as a source for repos in whatever file the package manager uses to find repos. for debian/ubuntu, it'd in /etc/apt/sources.list, where you'd remove the line that says 'deb: cdrom '

My goal is to tinker, ricing comes second. I don't want to chose a custom ROM that is trying to be the greatest at everything, just one to play around with and learn, preferably without losing the function of my phone.
